Experimental Communication

Graphic Design Level 6

Module Code: AD60036E

By Lucciano Anthony Blair

Physical 3D Text BRIEF • Make your letter in cardboard - Upper case - x height

150mm

• It should be 75mm deep

• Make it as accurately as you can - it should be helvetica neue bold - it should look good as a piece

• In its own right; you could paint it cover it in foil - whatever you think is appropriate - experiment

• Be innovative!

• Tape is fine to hold it together, or a glue gun or superglue works really well with mountboard

• Now destroy it in a visually inter- esting way

SUBMIT

High quality image of letter (Before) Video of destruction

High quality image of letter (After)

• I first created a net for my letter in photoshop, so I was

able to easily work with the correct shapes and sizes of the

letter B.

• Stuck down the printed version of my net on to cardboard and cut around the outline of the net.

• consructed the cardboard net using masking tape covering the entire surface of the 3d letter.

• I took photos from different angles

• The first set of photos are experimenting with the depth of field

• The second set was experimenting with a source of light

• The idea of burning it was something that I wanted to see, so I simply went along with that

Illustration For Animation

BRIEF

• Find out all you can about Jon Burgerman, his work, his background, his subject matter - everything

• Consider this video https://vimeo.com/122516829 • For one week fill up an A6 sketchbook with innovative

drawings

• Use only 2 black pens of different thicknesses like those in the video

• Look carefully at the way Jon Burgerman draws - No shading single line only

• The theme is SPACE EXPLORATION • You are inventing everything from scratch

Submit

One small sketchbook full with drawings (Black line only)

Jon Burgerman UK born, New York based artist, creadited and refered

as the leading figure in the poular doodle art style. His work consists of fine art, urban art, pop culture and humour. His doodle art has been crafted on all sorts of materials and

objects such as canvases, large scale murals (indoor and

outdoor), sculptures, apparel, print and even people (tatoos) In his creativaty video he mentions certain a few artist’s

names who inspire him such as Tex Avery, Chuck Jones,

Pendolton Ward, Hayao Miyazaki and Shieru Miyamoto. I

looked at these artists work to see also gain some inspiration for characted design. He talks about these creators and how they exaggirate the bounaries in their creations.

“Whats Possible and Whats not Possible”

Followning the guidelines of the brief i was able to constuct

my own innovative drawing based off the theme space

exploration. I also gave a few attempts of the doodle style Jon

Burgerman uses (not taking the pens off the paper, looping until cmplete.

Filling the A6 book at times was challenging, ideas were not

coming to mind. so at times like these i watched cartoon and animations to grasp some inspiration.

Once the week was over, I scanned and edited all my

photos into one composition ready to animate. I made a vaious versions that I took to print for personal use because i was happy with the design.

My Space Exploration

Animating Illustration This part of the project was what I enjoyed the most, i

used my compossition of space beings to creare a panorama

animation in after affects. changing the distance between each character and panning the camera to the right. i also added

some blur effect to some characters giving the scene some more dynamic.

I was happy with the final product but i wanted to edit and

play aroud with the idea some more. Importing the file into final cut pro I was able to add some cool effect and music, which brought the animation to life.

Ideas Through Press and Experimentation BRIEF

Icons Symbols and indexical Images produced in Adobe

illustrator as vector paths to be used on the laser cutter.

Experiment with monoprinting using handcut and laser

cut elementsfor monoprintinhg and using the etching press

with oil based inks. challenge and demonstrate experimental exploration through many forms of process and product.

Suspend judgement and allow serendepity to take place. • Offsetting • Offset Printing • Viscosity Printing • Screen Printing

Experiment!

I wanted to construct a scenes with exploding letters and

shatered glass, i randomly positioned the alphabet letters (posivive and negative parts) on my plate and used other

pieces of a thicker card to create the bomb and glass pieces. in a number of prints (layering and off-setting) I created my scene of mono prints.

When I wanted to try and purposely arrange the letters

to spell out a word I made the mistake of not spelling it

backwards. So sometimes i had some prints where some mistakes happened.

? When I had left some prints to dry over the space of two

days, I came back to find that six of my prints were missing.

Due to this I am unable to show all the prints that I had created and see the clear process or order that I did them in.

Shortly after mono prrinting I wanted to test out some

screen printing,

Here I wanted to think about how I was able to make my

design interactive, how I can bring it life. I brought plain puzzle

games that i was able to print my designs on. The fist one was

tested with my spider illustration filled with red ink. The second one is my space exploration black print showing some fine thin white lines.

Black screen print (cut areas) with green card behind.

Projecting 2D and 3D BRIEF

Work in groups, create a series of videos and photos of

2D and/or 3D work. experiment with the images projecting the on various surfaces. Understand eachothers strengths and weaknesses to be able to adapt.

• Suspend judgement and allow serindipity to take place • As well as indoor projection explore projecting outdoor

Due to time it was hard to get in contact with and

make arrangements for the whole group to do this project

sucessfully. I was able to communicate with one member of

me team and we were able to record and take photos of our projected objects.

We played around with using moving animation and still

images (that we were able to animate by moving the projector). We also projected on different textures, walls, materials and papers, experimenting with our surroundings.

We faced a lot of walls and bumps trying to complete this

task, but in the end we were happy with the final result.
