GREAT PLAINS NATURE CENTER A nature preserve in the middle of the city, The Chisholm Creek Park is a natural oasis and is the largest in Wichita at 282 acres! This is my favorite place to ride bikes or explore the miles of paved trails.

GRACE HILL WINERY

Whitewater, Kansas, is a lot closer than Napa, but don’t fret... You’ll feel like you’re on the West Coast when you arrive at this winery. They offer a ton of events, live music on Fridays and options for tastings. You can even participate in harvest every August through September!

HOORAY RANCH If you’re an avid hunter or wild life enthusiast, the short drive to Kingman is worth it. The ranch boasts over 20,000 acres of inten sively managed prime wildlife habi tat. They offer several kinds of hunts and facilities for private events.

Welcome to Wichita, colloquially known as the ICT. As a third-generation real estate professional and a natural-born social butterfly, I love exploring our city through the eyes of a tourist. But it doesn’t stop there. There are several incredible gems just outside our city limits. Happy exploring!

This casino, located in Mulvane, is the perfect spot for a date night or getaway. With several restaurants, a hotel and a full calendar of events, get ready to be entertained.

LUCIANO’S I’ve tried a lot of Italian food in my time and this gem in Mulvane is as close as you can get to a handmade dish from Italy. The traditional cui sine is matched by a genuine ambi ance, complete with live music.

CY’S HOOF AND HORN Located in downtown Sedgwick, you’ll be hard-pressed to find another restaurant that offers exceptional homemade meals like Cy’s. Home cooking at its finest!

My wife and I grew up here. We moved away temporarily for work. After coming back, we couldn’t imagine leaving again. This city is on the verge of something BIG. Between the booming downtown area consisting of new restaurants, new businesses and new entertainment, like our brand-new $80 million Riverfront Stadium, there is something for everyone. We encourage you to get out and explore our city, whether you moved across town or moved into town. Explore our city like you would as a tourist and support local. To get a small idea of what you could find:

▸ 126 parks, including Sedgwick County Park, OJ Watson Park, and Naftzger Park to name a few

Whether you have moved into one of Wichita’s historic, classic neighborhoods or into one of the incredible suburbs, you now live in the thriving Greater Wichita area.

Take the time to explore and then get involved. There are numerous organizations you can get plugged into immediately and start making an impact. Make this city your own. Together we can continue to push Wichita forward and make it a better place, not just for us, but for our kids and for generations to come.

Introduce yourself to your neighbors. You never know who you will find before the door. It might just be your (or your kids’) new bestie. Seriously, this happens!

Introduce yourself to the parents at your kids’ school or soccer team. This one is easy. You already know you have one thing in common – kids!

See someone on social media who is doing something cool? Message them and grab coffee! This is one of the best ways to build your tribe and one of my all-time favorite ways to meet cool women in Wichita. Consider joining The Thread where you’ll meet a variety of career-focused women from all different backgrounds who are ambitious about hitting their goals and building their community. In fact, why don’t you just introduce yourself to everyone you meet? Let them know you just moved to the neighbor hood, see what information pops up that you might be interested in. A neighbor hood book club maybe?

It doesn’t matter whether you’re single or married, climbing the corporate lad der or building your own business, doing a nap-time freelance hustle or working remotely full time, we all need likeminded people in our daily life to keep us sane and help to normalize what we’re going through. We need women to celebrate with, to call when we want a quick second opinion or to commiser ate with when the day has been rough.

Sometimes, we also need them to bring wine, so bonus points if you find a friend with good taste in pinot noir.

Explore your new neighborhood’s coffee shop, brunch spot or bookstore, and give someone a sincere compliment.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP YOU BUILD YOUR BENCH OF LIKE-MINDED LADIES:

TO SUPPORT YOUR SEASON OF LIFE No matter if you’re new to town, or just new to your neighborhood, the transi tions that come with moving can be a challenge. The logistics of figuring out what is where in the grocery aisle of your new grocery store can be enough to make you sweat, let alone figuring out your new route to work, while dropping the kids off at school beforehand and trying to get everywhere on time. Add all of this to trying to keep up with your workload and perform at your highest level and woof! Life is a lot sometimes. One thing that can reduce your stress levels? Building your very own tribe of women who are in a similar season of life as you. Are you a mama? As much as you love your single girls, you need friends that are with kids too so that you don’t feel like the crazy one all the time! Busy building a business? Surround yourself with other entrepreneurs who can tell you the best accounting software to go with, their content batching tricks or how they create boundaries to avoid burnout. If you’re climbing the corporate ladder, find some women who can swing the 45-minute lunch date because they know you’re not going to get a mani with them in the middle of the day.

Ain’t no shame in the tribe-building game. When sparks fly from it, you know it’s a friendship fit!

PLAN YOUR COMMUTE TO WORK. This is probably something you’ve thought about before making an offer, but now that you’re moved in, it’s wise to drive around and get a feel for the lay of the land. Make sure to check the main thor oughfares for any construction closures and how long it takes with and without traffic.

GET A PROFESSIONAL DEEP CLEAN, INCLUDING CARPETS.

There’s no telling who has a key to your home or an extra opener. Get new locks and have your garage doors reprogrammed so they only work with the remotes you have. Smartlocks are a convenient choice as they can be controlled and monitored from your phone. A home security system and invisible fence for our four-legged family members are also a part of the security checklist. And, remember to check the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as well as locate the water shut-off valve.

While you’re driving around, make sure to find your clos est gas station, grocery store, pharmacy and car wash. Of course Google will tell you, but nothing beats actually driving there and remembering where everything is.

“Being in the central U.S., Kansas has a wide variety of fast-changing weather brought in by the fresh breezes of the Plains. On average in Wichita, one can expect around 15 inches of snow, 10 days above 100 degrees, and almost 35 inches of rain per year. Ranchers burning the Flint Hills, which are northeast of town, create a spectacular scene at night during the spring. Kansas is also widely known for its severe weather and tornadoes. On average, the state of Kansas sees just under 100 tornadoes per year and hundreds of severe storms. The peak months for severe weather are April, May and June in Wichita. As a result, weather knowl edge and safety are very important. No matter where you live, make sure you go to ready.gov for the latest information on weather safety kits and protecting you and your family. As much as severe weather is a significant threat, would you have guessed that flooding is the num ber-one killer? If you approach a flooded road, remem ber that it only takes a foot or two of rushing water to float most vehicles. Instead, turn around, don’t drown.”

Archaeological evidence indicates human habitation near the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers, the site of present-day Wichita, as early as 3000 B.C. In 1541, a Spanish expedition led by explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado found the area popu lated by the Quivira, or Wichita, people. Conflict with the Osage in the 1750s drove the Wichita further south. Prior to European settlement of the region, the site was in the territory of the Kiowa.

LOCAL > HISTORY A LOOK BACK AT OUR history Wichitaf

Wichita began as a trading post on the Chisholm Trail in the 1860s and was formerly incorporated as a city on July 21st, 1870. It became a destination for cattle drives traveling north from Texas to access railroads which led to markets in eastern U.S. cities. This earned the nickname “Cowtown.”

By DRONE-TOGRAPHY

The original stimulus to the City’s economic develop ment was the extension of the Santa Fe Railway into Wichita in 1872.

It won’t take you long to figure out there is an unspoken divide between “east-siders” and “west-siders.” But what is the origination of this divide? It all started with Wichita’s position on the Chisholm Trail. Across the Arkansas River, the town of Delano became an entertainment destination for cattle men thanks to its saloons, brothels, and lack of law enforcement. The area had a reputation for violence until local lawmen, Wyatt Earp, began to assertively police the cowboys. By the middle of the decade, the cattle trade had moved west to Dodge City. Wichita annexed Delano in 1880.

During World War II, the city experienced a population explosion during the war when it became a major manufacturing center for the Boeing B-29 bomber. In 1951, the U.S. Air Force announced plans to assume control of the airport to establish McConnell Air Force Base.

This triggered another economic boom in Wichita as producers established refineries, fueling stations, and headquarters in the city In the 1920s and 1930s, businessmen and aeronautical engineers established aircraft manufacturing companies in Wichita, including Beechcraft, Cessna, and Stearman Aircraft. The city became an aircraft production hub known as “The Air Capital of the World.”

Wichita has long been known as a center of entrepreneurship. Koch Industries and Cargill, the two largest privately held companies in the United States, both operate headquarters in Wichita. Other firms with headquarters in Wichita include roller-coaster manufacturer Chance Rides, gourmet food retailer Dean & Deluca and renewable energy company Alternative Energy Solutions.

“When I’m not working from home or co-working at The Hive, I love to pop into Leslie’s Coffee Co. or Cocoa Dolce. Both are chic spots with delicious treats, where I can have meetings and get a change of scenery. When you work remotely, it’s all about finding places that inspire you.” – Andrea Hattan, founder of The Hive
