Lucía Guzmán

I’m an architect and designer from Granada, Spain.

My knowledge in architecture has provided me a basis to improve and develop a broad range of design thinking, as well as a strong sense of visual communication.

One of my biggest interests is to find new approaches and techniques in the branch of design from a more architectural perspective and to be able to continue innovating day by day in both fields.

I find it important to pay special attention and study all those particular elements of each environment; its urban, social, historical and natural context. This allow us to project with a friendly architecture that knows and accepts the laws of nature and takes advantage of them in its favor.

The rammed earth floor, a eco friendly flooring system, allows rainwater to filter and continue its cycle. This land is introduced into the house as an entrance to two accommodations, and in a similar way do the crops or the ditch, which penetrate and intermingle with the architecture and the tourist.
13
The minimal dwelling is articulated thanks to a sugar cane piece of furniture that contrasts with the brick walls painted white to follow the line of the pre-existing buildings and that goes out into the landscape just as it enters it. This piece of furniture is the one that shapes the nightstand, the bed, the window shutter (which folds down and becomes a seat) and goes up to the upper floor to become a table.

Collage: what would happen if we flooded the buried dikes?

BURIED DAM

Spa and accommodations in Lanjarón

The idea arose from this point: rediscovering and reusing this buried landscape and flooding it with water for its enjoyment and contemplation in the new spa. It is proposed to generate a cycle of water in continuous movement taking advantage of the existing interstices in these retaining walls, which emerges from the historical Capuchina spring, pours into the dikes and ends in the Salado stream. Water that stains orange every surface it slides down due to its high ferruginous content.

The previous study of how these dikes were built in the 1930s was key to obtaining the necessary clues to know how to approach them constructively. Its construction process was full of ephemeral wooden structures, suspension bridges, rails, ropes, boxes, tunnels that cross the mountain to collect the raw material as quickly as possible, accumulations of earth from excavations, precarious pipes through which water emerges, etc.

Hydraulic infrastructures that control the flow of water

The project is based on the establishment of a large infrastructure in the form of a walkway that connects the discovered dikes with the different areas in the most direct and efficient way possible, as originally would have happened for its construction.

In this way, the program runs through clear and marked paths for easy orientation. It is the walkway itself that delimits the public from the private use. The hotel and the spa for private use in front of the Capuchina garden is returned to the town for the visit, enjoyment and use of its historical spring.
