Climbing is the sport for Mario “Climbing gives* you self-confidence and shows* you that you can always do better.”
“I started* rock climbing when I was five. I went to a sports club to sign* up for swimming but then I saw* the climbing* wall – and I knew I wanted to climb! My family and friends were a* bit surprised because none* of them did any climbing. Now I practise twice* a week at a sports club and I love it!” “I think climbing is good for you. It helps you to think, use your logic, concentrate and to coordinate your hands and feet. You also have* to look* after your team, which is good because you get* a sense of team spirit. Climbing gives* you self-confidence and shows* you that you can always do better. The easiest thing is anchoring*, putting hooks* in to support your weight* and stop you from falling. The most difficult thing is making* sure you’re doing things right because you’re helping your teammate* to climb by slackening* the rope and trying* to prevent them from falling.”
And more “I’ve learnt a lot of techniques since* I started*. But I still* have a lot more to learn. I want to climb steeper* walls! Anyway*, I’m not thinking of giving* up climbing yet* - I enjoy* it so much! You should* try it!” Do you do a sport or play a musical instrument? Would you like to appear in this section? ow peaceful* this hippo looks* in the water with his mates*… Ah, there’s one who’s looking a bit cross*! He bites* the tail of one of his friends with his formidable teeth. Why is he so aggressive? He’s the alpha male*: he bullies* the young males* to keep* them under his control.
Female* hippos are less aggressive than the males* and prefer to help each* other. They have a lot of work to do because they keep* their baby close* for seven years! Often* one female* looks* after the babies in the herd* while* the other mothers are busy* doing other things. Like* a crèche*!
To mark his territory and prevent another male* approaching*, he poos* outside* the water, then whirls* his tail round to spread* the excrement everywhere*. The message is clear: this is my place*! The mother normally poos* in the water: her excrement serves as food as* the young hippos move from milk to grass*…
In the evening, when the sun isn’t so* strong, the herd* gets* out of the water and grazes* on the grass* in the savannah. The hippos can travel kilometres because they each* store* up more than 30 kilos of plants! Their skin is scarred*, the marks of previous fights*. Solutions to the games in issue 123
Pages 6-7. Oukile family: 1. I can see three (3) sea turtles. 2. I can see one (1) submarine. 3. I can see five (5) pelicans. 4. I can see five (5) octopuses.
Pages 16-17. Junior detective: 1. Where’s the sardine? The sardine is in H2-Oh’s snowball, which is hidden behind the orange pipe on the first floor of the base. 2. Who was inside the base at the time of the theft and who was outside? Mac didn’t leave the base because his suit is dry and he’s too big to get into someone else’s suit. C. didn’t go out either because he’s scared of sharks. Neither of them is the thief. Indigo is outside and someone used Amaya’s suit because it’s wet. 3. Who stole the sardine? Indigo was in the submarine at the time of the theft. If she had gone out, H2-Oh would have seen her because he was recharging just above her. Nadia is lying. She didn’t drink coffee – she had tea. Her cup is still in the bubble with its tea bag. What’s more, she doesn’t really have an alibi: she’s the culprit! 4. How? Nadia put tea in Mac’s cup to make him ill. She went upstairs with C. and waited until Mac went to the toilet. Then, she took the snowball and put the sardine inside. After that, Nadia put on Amaya’s suit as Amaya is the same size as her. She went out of the base to hide the snowball, swam round behind the base so that nobody could see her and then went back inside! Page 19. Let’s discover: Game 1: We must protect the forests and rainforests! Game 2: a. 1. b. 3. c. 2. d. 4. Game 3: black, grey, white. Game 4: Trees are vital because they give us oxygen! Page 25. Let’s explore: Game 1: We make a bed in the trees with branches, twigs and leaves. Game 2: Orangutans are in danger because of deforestation.
