She started competing at age six and a few years later moved* for a short time to Switzerland to live with an aunt and train* on the slopes* and learn French.

c

Brett Wilhelm/ESPN

hloe’s high* school in MammothH!, California, allows* her to take classes online while she is away*. And her dad often reminds* her to do her homework! Chloe balances* her sport with her schoolwork, but she knows she’s lucky. “Every time I’m on the mountain, I’m just so thankful to be there,” she says, “I’m always texting my friends, ‘Haha, how’s school going?’”

Chloe’s talents and strengths*

c

hloe spent five years skateboarding to practise her moves*. And it worked! Today, one of Chloe’s strengths* is that she can ride* “switch”– or on her non-dominant foot. This is difficult and Chloe compares it to running* backwards! Riding switch is rare in women’s snowboarding and makes Chloe’s riding* more powerful* in the superpipeH!. why barbie loves ken

… to be together!

Lloyd/Mattel

Ken is very romantic

Ken and Barbie met* in a TV commercial*, in 1961. They are at a dance* and the commercial describes how Ken will change Barbie’s life. Dressed* perfectly for the occasion, he will meet her for lunch at school and take her on dates*; sometimes they simply relax together. It’s so cute!

Ken can’t compete with Barbie! She travelled into space in 1965, and she has been US presidential candidate six times. Sold* in more than 150 countries, she is the most popular fashion doll ever.

Ken had big muscles and a suntan* in the 1960s. In 2017, Mattel created 15 new Kens with different body* sizes, skin* colours and hairstyles*. There’s even a Ken with a man bun*! Ken knows that the world has changed…

 “Andy Warhol” was an American artist and an icon of the pop culture of the 1960s. His works bring together artistic expression, advertising and the celebrity culture. Two of his most famous pictures are Campbell’s Soup Cans and the Marilyn Diptych, which contains fifty pictures of the actress Marilyn Monroe, painted not long after her death.

Mattel

Mattel say that one Barbie is sold* every three seconds. That’s 10.5 million Barbies every year!

Ken and Barbie split* up on Valentine’s Day 2004, but got* back together on the same day in 2011. He waited seven years, but his patience triumphed in the end!

 A “hologram” can be used for many purposes, one of them security. Security holograms are very difficult to forge or falsify and, consequently, they are used on some currencies, such British £5, £10 and £20 notes, and on German identity cards, amongst others. I Love English • February 2018

An argument Shutterstock

Lisa and her brother Harry are talking to their mum about what they want to do at the weekend. Lisa: Mum, can we go to the movies on Saturday? I want to see theH! new film starring Johnny Depp. Mum: We could. I’ll ask dad and see what he thinks. Harry: I don’t want to go to the cinema, I want to go to the park and rent a pedal kart. L: Again? We did that last weekend. H: And we had a lot of fun. L: It was OK, but what’s the point of doing it two weekends in a row*? H: The point is, my dear girl, that it’s more fun than going to the cinema and you know it. L: I’m not sure about that. I’d* rather not do the same thing every weekend. Plus, I really want to see that film.

Points to discuss • Do you have any brothers and sisters? If so, do you often argue with them? Do you often argue with your parents? What do you usually argue about? • What do you like doing with your family in your free time? • What did you do last weekend? Did you enjoy it? Why (not)? Would you like to do it again this weekend? • If you could do anything you wanted next weekend, what would you do?

!

Help

H: Well, I don’t want to see that movie because it’s rubbish* - it’s for silly little kids* like you. M: Harry, that’ll* do! L: Oh, yeah? For your information, the film isn’t rubbish*, it’s based on a true story and, in fact, it’s a very good movie. H: Who says so? L: It’s won several* awards*.

Roleplay Student A: You and your friend are talking about a movie. You liked the film and want to watch it again this weekend. Explain to Student B why you liked it so much and try to convince him/her to watch it with you.

M: That’s enough. Why do you have to argue* about everything? You’d better* agree on a film we can all see. H: Or elseH!… M: Or we’ll just stay at home. H: It’s not fair*. You always take* Lisa’s side. M: OK, that’s* it. That’s no way to talk to your mother, Harry. You’re grounded*.

Student B: You and your friend are talking about a movie. You didn’t like the film at all but your friend wants you to watch it again with him/her. Explain to Student A why you don’t like the movie that much.

Useful language:

Expressing like and dislike: I adore; I love; I am a big fan of; I am crazy about; I hate; I am not into; I can’t stand. Disagreeing: Excuse me; I’m sorry but; Are you kidding?; Don’t make me laugh; Says who? Expressing anger: For your information; That’s it.

 “The new film starring Johnny Depp” When we want to say that an actor is appearing in a certain film, we use the verb to star. For example, No wonder the movie has been nominated for the Oscars, it stars so many good actors.

20 I Love English • February 2018

H: Who cares* about the awards, the movie is just…

 The phrase “Or else” is used as a threat in informal English. It introduces the consequence of an action even if the consequence is not mentioned. For example, You’d better listen to the teacher, or else... (you will be punished in some way).

Diets Rachel and Adam are talking about food. Rachel: Have you been to the new burger place in town? I was there last Saturday and it was really good. Adam: No, I haven’t. I’m a vegetarian so I don’t think I’ll ever go there. R: Oh, too bad. Although I think they have a few vegetarian options. Since when are you a vegetarian? A: It all started last Christmas. I was already thinking about eating more healthily* and then I saw this documentary about intensive farming* and when I saw how badly the animals are treated, I madeH! up my mind not to eat meat ever again.

R: I see. Personally, I think we should ban* those farms and go back to more environmentally* friendly and sustainable* farming*.

protein from dairy* products and eggs. R: And do you get enough protein by eating those?

A: For me, it’s not only a matter of the conditions animals are bred* in but also the fact that we have to kill them to feed* ourselves. We can get all our nutrients from other types of food.

A: You can. You just need to plan what you eat very carefully to make sure you get the nutrients you need. Also, eating a lot of vegetables and fruit helps to reduce the toxins in your body and that makes you feel better!

R: I’m not so sure about that. As far as I know, although you can get protein from pulses*, the only type of protein that contains all the necessary amino acids is animal protein.

R: I’m afraid I don’t agree. I read an article the other day that explained why there’s nothing in our bodies that needs detoxifying.

A: That’s true but you can get that

Points to discuss

A: I don’t think my arguments convince you. That’s all right. I’ll stick* to my veggiesH!, though*.

Roleplay Student A: You have just decided to follow a new diet to be healthier. Explain your diet to Student B and discuss its advantages and disadvantages.

Useful language:

Giving an opinion: In my opinion; For me; I believe/ think that... Agreeing: That is true; right; I totally agree. Disagreeing: I’m afraid I don’t agree/disagree; I’m not so sure about that; I totally disagree with you.

Student B: Your friend has just decided to follow a new diet to be healthier. Talk to Student A and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the new diet. t n e t o Totip stalks*!

Steps:

H!

No more wasted food! Grow* your fruits and vegetables again from their stalks*.

1

Use the knife and cutting board* to cut off the base of the vegetables. In the case of garlic, cut off the part at top of the clove* (the pointed part) to make room* for new shoots*. Make yourself a salad with the vegetables you cut or add them to soup. Keep the stalks*.

You need:

• A cutting board* • A knife • A teaspoon • Sugar • Water

se celery*, • A few vegetables (we cho rlic. cos* lettuce, leek* and ga u like.) yo if ers You can choose oth • Compost etable. • A clear glass for each veg • Another glass for each vegetable

 The adjective “totipotent” is used in biology to refer to a cell which has the ability to develop into a complete organism or other types of cells. For example, Totipotent embryo cells can differentiate and become a hundred different types of cells to form skin, muscle, etc.

Your vegetables are growing again! Try* them! Take the celery heart and add it to a glass of tomato juice. Eat the leek* in an omelette. Chop* the bud* of the garlic flower, add it to oil and dip* some bread into the oil. Delicious!

4 When the roots* start to grow*, plant the vegetables in containers filled with compost. On the internet, some people suggestH! not planting the stalks* but leaving them in water. The vegetables will grow* but they will have less* flavour* and they will be less crunchy*. That is why we recommend planting them.

What happens? In this way, during the experiment, the vegetables were able to reconstruct all the parts of the original plant. However, to do this, the plants need water, carbon dioxide, nutrients and light.

Here’s the formula for photosynthesis; it is an essential formula for plants to grow. Water + carbon dioxide + light = carbohydrates + oxygen

 “any sugar” Remember that, in English, we generally use any in questions and negative sentences. For example, Have you got any extra paper that you can lend me? I am so sorry, I don’t have any paper.

At the beginning, water and environmental gas were the only available components for the plant, which was able to grow again. Then, the compost provided* it with strength, support and longevity.

 “suggest” We can follow the verb suggest with a gerund (-ing) or with a clause beginning with that, but never with an infinitive. For example, He suggested going to the cinema; I’ll suggest (that) they meet us at 8 p.m. Note that you can also omit the that before a clause. I Love English • February 2018

Put the vegetable stalks* in the glasses and leave* them for three days. Put them in a sunny place, on the windowsill*, for example. After the three days, change the water every day but don’t add anyH! sugar. After two to four weeks, you should see some roots* appearing (faster for the leek*, more slowly for the garlic).
