Pretty pooch* Wendy the Chihuahua looks cute* in her pink dress and jelly shoes. Is she going to the beach? As you probably
know, the Chihuahua originally came from Mexico and is associated with the Mexican state of Chihuahua. It is the smallest breed* of dog and can have long or short hair. The Chihuahua is a bit nervous. But it’s fun too because it likes to make a den* and hide* in pillows* or at the bottom* of the bed!

These children are having fun. They are playing with a giant King Kong scarecrow! In the UK, farmers*
have* used scarecrows for centuries* to protect their crops*. Scarecrows used* to be figures dressed* as people but now farmers* generally use more sophisticated methods. Today there are many scarecrow festivals in Britain, where people make scarecrows to raise* money for charity*.

Track 3 Here are 8 things to do to help the planet!
Follow these instructions and help
Turn the tap off when you brush your teeth!
Don’t waste water…
Don’t take a bath… Take a quick shower!
© Bayard Presse-I Love English for Kids 182-Photos: Fotolia, 2017/C. Donson.
Did you know that you use about 9.5 litres of water per minute in the shower and about 115 litres to fill a bath?
Don’t destroy forests...
Plant a tree!
If you live in the city, you can always grow plants on your balcony or terrace. Every little thing helps!

let’s go green! the planet to stay green! Ride a bicycle or walk.
Don’t waste electricity…
Don’t pollute the atmosphere…
Switch off the lights when you leave a room!
Riding a bike is fun and good exercise! If you walk, you see lots of things that you don’t see if you’re sitting in the car.
If you switch the lights off, you save electricity and… you save your parents’ money!
Eat organic fruit and vegetables!
Use reusable bags.
It’s good for you and the planet!
Don’t use plastic bags…
A lot of the plastic we use ends up in the sea and destroys marine life. If we aren’t careful, there will soon be more plastic in the sea than fish!
Organic food is produced naturally. In other words, no chemicals, such as artificial fertilizers or pesticides, are used to help the plants grow.

The ukulele

Although most of us know very little about the ukulele, it is an amazingly* popular instrument. Read* on and find out more…
The ukulele is a musical instrument in the string* family. The ukulele was
invented in Hawaii in the 1880s. People believe* it was based on several* Portuguese instruments, such* as the cavaquinho
and the machete. Some people say that the word ukulele is the Hawaiian word for jumping* flea! However*, the last queen of the Kingdom of Hawaii, Liliuokalani, translated ukulele as “gift* from afar*”.
The instrument Ukuleles or “ukes” generally have four strings*, usually have the shape* of a figure eight and look* similar to acoustic guitars. Non-standard ukuleles are often oval and are referred to as the “pineapple” ukulele. The original ukuleles were made of wood*, like* mahogany*. The most expensive* ones today continue to be made of wood but cheaper* versions are made of laminate or plywood* and even* plastic.
And a joke…
What did the guitar say to the ukulele? Uke, I’m your father!

The ukulele was an iconic instrument during the jazz age* in the United States and it became popular in the United Kingdom years later*, in the 1960s, when the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain was formed. Beatle George Harrison had a large collection of ukuleles and he often gave* them away to his friends. Jason Mraz’s 2008 single “I’m Yours” is the best-selling* ukulele song of all time.

t’s the end of March. The marmot family has* been asleep for six months. In the autumn, the whole* family went into its burrow* and all huddled* together to keep* warm. They only* wake up to go to the bathroom in the tunnel next to the nest*.

You can’t fly to foreign* countries until* you’re twelve and so*, for the moment, I just take* passengers around* France. The hardest* thing is to make adults respect you. I’m the captain of the plane and I’m responsible for the passengers’ safety*. So I want people to obey my orders.

As* you probably imagine, this story is not true. It’s just a joke* to celebrate April Fools’ Day! In many parts of the world, people play pranks* on 1st April. There are several* theories about the origin of this custom: some believe it was to celebrate the end of winter and the beginning of spring, while* others think it was because the calendar was changed and some people didn’t realize that New Year’s Day had become 1st January instead* of 1st April. Newspapers, radio, TV stations and websites sometimes play jokes on people too. In 1957, the BBC reported that Swiss farmers were experiencing a record spaghetti harvest* and showed a short film of people picking spaghetti from trees; the next day, the channel received lots of letters from viewers asking where they could buy spaghetti plants! sign: firmo so: así que; tan take: llevo; tomar take (great) care: tengo (mucho) cuidado

Sometimes it takes* longer to prepare a flight* than the trip itself ! I have to check* everything: the passenger list, the menus served on board and the petrol*. I also* have to work with my copilot on the route I’m going to take. Finally, I go* round the plane with my head* mechanic to make sure that everything’s working properly*.
