Francis Fonseca.

City of Belmopan, January 20, 2015 History will record that when the over 5,000 hardworking cane farmers were in need of defence and support when under attack from a powerful, foreign multinational company, standing up for them were the Opposition People’s United Party, senior cane farmers and leaders of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association such as Alfredo Ortega, Diody Novelo, Lucilo Teck, Javier Keme, Ramon “Monchi” Cervantes and Oscar Alonzo, and the venerable Union leader and attorney Audrey Matura-Shepherd. The Government of Belize led by the Prime Minister Dean Barrow and his minion Ministers all turned cowards under the might of the foreign entity, American Sugar Refinery, and joined them to oppress and beat down the cane farmers into submission. The final act of this state-sanctioned political and economic hit on the cane farmers was the Government’s passing, with great urgency, an amended Sugar Industry Act on Monday, January 29th, 2015 before the House of Representatives. The Prime Minister, his Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, all got up to sweeten up the new law. They beat their chests and pretended that they were acting in the interest of the industry, but in between the lines of their remarks were unconditional pledges of allegiance to ASR. Like loyal agents, they hailed their masters, and patted each other on their backs for defeating the once united and powerful cane farmers. But the Prime Minister’s pretence and hypocrisy has been exposed for all Belizeans to see. Louder than his voice have been the cries of the cañeros and the resistance put up by those who stood up for them. Outside the House of Representatives group of Belizeans protested, condemning the actions of the Government and the passing of the Bill. Led by Audrey Matura and members of the NTUCB, they called out the Government to stop the oppression of cane farmers. Inside the House, the Leader of the Opposition Hon. Francis Fonseca, who stood firm on the People’s United Party’s proud and historic legacy of support for our cane farmers through, decried the Government’s destruction of unity among cane farmers for the benefit of ASR. He said the cane farmers, who are important partners in the sugar industry, have been greatly disrespected.

Fonseca. Joining the Opposition Leader’s defense of cane farmers also was former Prime Minister and Area Representative for Fort George Rt. Hon. Said Musa who said that the Barrow Administration was disguising an “infamous betrayal” of our cane farmers. He pointed out that the Government was merely “grandstanding” over the urgent need for passing the amended law. Hon. Musa said the real purpose was to aid and abet with ASR to take full advantage of the cane farmers. He accused the Government of being “a collaborationist” with ASR to humiliate and oppress the cane farmers. “All this delay could have been avoided. All this depression in the north could have been avoided if the Government had stood up at the side of the people from day one instead of siding with ASR to the detriment of the cane farmers. The Prime Minister and his Government have succeeded in destroying and dismembering the cane farmers association of Belize because they believed that the majority

of the people in the association were members and supporters of the People’s United Party,” stated Hon. Musa. Hon. Jose Abelardo Mai, the Orange Walk South area representative and a cane farmer, hailed the work of the BSCFA in the north over the past 50 years, noting that they have improved their management capacity tremendously and were making positive impacts on the industry in areas of fertilizer distribution, control of diseases such as the frog-hopper, more effective re-planting programmes, provision of education scholarships for families of cane farmers, and fixing sugar roads and bridges to access fields. “All that should be the responsibility of the government of the day was being done by the mother of all associations and the fairtrade funds. And people dear to say that there is nothing to show?” he posed. Hon. Mai described the BSCFA as “the only association that has a comprehensive, organized structure and logistical frame work with trained expertise in place for an efficient delivery of sugar cane to the mill” and which had grown to become the “largest producers association in the Central American and Caribbean regions”. In condemning the Government’s actions against the Association, he called on the Prime Minister to look at his own Government before criticising the management challenges of another. “I dare say, Mr. Speaker, that the government’s administration today is no better than the BSCFA’s. I would go further to say, Mr. Speaker, that should this government’s administration be subjected to FLO-CERT’s auditing, not only would they be suspended, they would be de- certified/

expelled 100 times,” remarked Hon. Mai. Former Deputy Prime Minister and Orange Walk Central area representative, Hon. John Briceño, who is also a cane farmer, also voiced his disgust for the Government’s treatment of cane farmers. He pointed out that the UDP Government has had a history of weakening and attacking the sugar industry while the PUP has always improved and rescued the industry. He recalled the Father of the Nation’s PUP Leader Emeritus Rt. Hon. George Price’s agrarian reform programme which saw private lands handed to farmers so they could become partners in the industry. He remembered the UDP Government’s shutdown of the Libertad Sugar Factory twice, the second time too deep a depression to recover from. “I dislike the idea that we are playing politics with an industry that is so vital to the national development. I am also angry with the actions of some of the UDP Ministers including the Deputy Prime Minister who are creating chaos in the industry instead of finding workable solutions to help the cane farmers of the north,” he stated. Also vocally against Government’s moves against the cane farmers were Corozal South West Area Representative Hon. Ramiro Ramirez, Corozal South -East Area Representative Hon. Florencio Marin Jr. and Toledo East Area Representative Hon. Mike Espat. The Opposition, in protest of the Government’s ramming through the law without giving any of the stakeholders an opportunity to review and have an input, walked out of the National Assembly at 2:03pm in the afternoon. The Leader of the Opposition Hon. Francis then joined the protesters and commended them for fighting for our cane farmers. He reassured them that they were on the right side of history.

UDP concedes defeat in Freetown Continued from page 1 The UDP has been fishing for candidates for many months following the trashing they got in the division in the 2012 general elections. Their last candidate, Lee Mark Chang, threw in the towel right after the immigration scandal involving Elvin Penner and South Korean criminal Kim Won Hong was exposed. Since then, the UDP have had no success in swatting down someone for the area. First it was Darrel Bradley, who refused to be set up by his Party. Old candidate Michael Peyrefitte didn’t want to come back. Then it was Jorge Espat, who we are told, is already seeing the writing on the wall of the UDP’s downfall under Barrow and wants nothing to do with them at the moment. Sadly, someone’s gotta give and this week UDP Leader Dean Barrow announced that their sacrificial lamb is no other than Carla Barnett. A Candidate of Concession The announcement that Barnett was Dean’s personal choice for Freetown is really an act of conceding defeat. With no one stepping up, neither experienced political person nor community leader, Dean settled with this odd choice. And odd she is. Politics in Belize is not for the means-spirited. Not for

Roaring Creek Village, Cayo District, January 21, 2015 The body of 24 year old Roaring Creek businessman and resident, Emerson Daly, who went missing on Saturday January 18th night, was found dead in the Belize River in Roaring Creek Village this morning. Police have reported that the lifeless body was in a decomposed state. While it showed multiple stab wounds on his chest, the Police say the body also had a gunshot wound. Daly, who is the owner of Daly’s Dream Creation, an events planning and decorating company, was reported missing by his mother, Desiree Matute, on Monday January 20th. She said that on Saturday January 18th night Daly left home to an unknown destination and had not returned. She reported that she tried to contact him through his cell phone, but was not able to. Daly had borrowed a family member’s vehicle, a blue-in-colour Nissan Pathfinder, and it had not been returned. Following the report, the Police launched an investigation which had several major leads prior to this morning’s discovery. On Monday morning the missing Nissan SUV was found along Mount Pleasant Road in the City of Belmopan. Blood stains were found on the back seat, along with a pair of slippers. In the afternoon, the Police found an undershirt with blood stains on a feeder road behind the Cohune Walk Phase II area. The piece of clothing is believed to belong to Daly, since he left home wearing only an undershirt and red short pants. His body was found shirtless.

Like the involvement of Godwin Hulse two years ago, Dean made every effort to emphasize that Barnett has “remarkable reputation”, something which he clearly lacks in the eyes of Belizeans. Is he then trying to white-wash his bad reputation, especially on women who are independent and prepared to stand up to him? Just ask Audrey Matura, Miss Kay Menzies, Mrs. Jacqueline Marshalleck, our very own Senator Lisa Shoman, their very own Cynthia Ellis or Anne Marie, to name a few. We cannot help to conclude that Barnett is a candidate of concession,

in particular for a Party who schemes with precision to get their way. Embracing UDP Corruption And so, as Barnett sat next to her desperate and toxic Party Leader, the rabid Chairman, and the infamous Chinese connection, we couldn’t help but feel a little sympathy for her. Forgive her Lord, for she knows not what she’s getting into. We wonder if Barnett had given much thought to her reputation and the repercussions of joining a band of hustlers who have been caught over and over in some of the greatest acts of injustice. Imagine Barnett rallying for proper use of public funds in the same Party that saw Edmond Castro use public funds to pay for his mother’s funeral and to repair bicycles and pay for parties in his constituency. Imagine her calling for protection of our patrimony in the same Party that protected the corrupt Elvin Pen-

03 3 ner who sold out our nationality and passport and was never investigated or prosecuted. Imagine her advocating for the protection of women in the same Party which stood by as Patrick Faber was accused of physically attacking an employee of his own Ministry inside his bedroom during a birthday party at his Lord’s Bank home. Barnett must have given all of this some thought. She is after all, a distinguished Belizean, with some levels of accolades. It must then mean that she is a willing accomplice to her own demise. She is inflicting pain on herself and it appears she is prepared to withstand it for she publicly agreed and thanked her Party Leader. The same Party Leader who has presided over economic failure, political deception of voters, abuse of public funds, corruption, in your face nepotism, and the weakening of our democracy. Good luck dancing with the wolves, lady.

on the Statement by Leader of the Opposition Hon. Francis Fonseca at January 19th 2015 Meeting of the House of Representatives Mr. Speaker, the Sugar Industry is the lifeblood of the North. Its survival, its success, growth and development is vital to the families and communities of the North but also to our national economy and the nation of Belize. We pay tribute to our hardworking cañeros, who work the land, dedicating their lives to the important industry which allows them to provide housing and shelter to their families, food, clothing, and education for their children. We salute our cañeros. It is their dignity, honour, pride and future that we are here to protect and defend. It is for them that we rise and stand up here today. Mr. Speaker, the proposed amendments are an attack, an assault on that dignity and future of our cañeros and the future of the sugar industry which they have built working the land. This industry has had a long history of growth and development based on a working partnership, a working tri-partite relationship, which has had its problems from time to time but one which has worked over time. It has served the interest of the industry, it has served the interest of our cane farmers, it has served the interest of the miller and it has served

the national interest. That tripartite relationship involves the cane farmers, the miller (now BSI/ASR), and the Government of Belize – all three of those parties play a very vital role in ensuring the viability and success of the industry. Each must be valued and respected. That longstanding partnership is now under serious threat by no other than this same UDP Government which has formed an alliance with the multi-national ASR to destroy the venerable institution, the BSCFA, which has served this country for 55 years. We condemn this decision because it was a deliberate decision by the Prime Minister and his Deputy Prime Minister who is also the Minister of Agriculture who should be standing up and defending the interest of the cañeros but instead has turned against them. We condemn Mr. Speaker, this deliberate decision to abandon the cañeros. It is this UDP Prime Minister and his Government who are actively working to divide and tear apart the BSCFA. Mr. Speaker, they talk about politics but it is they who brought politics

into this very serious national issue by exploiting their political relationship with certain leaders of the BSCFA to destroy the unity in that organisation. Mr. Speaker, history will record that it was this UDP Prime Minister and his Government whose treachery and betrayal forced our cañeros unto their knees to bow before the mighty ASR with the Government right there standing beside ASR, to sign unto a one-sided and unfair deal. The question Mr. Speaker is what does ASR have over this Prime Minister and his Government? What is really behind this deal? Why is the Prime Minister so nice and courteous to Mac Maclaclan and so rude and disparaging and offensive towards some of our very own cañeros? And then he wants to turn his wrath to the lady, Ms. Audrey Matura, with personal and petty attacks. Why are you attacking that lady who is fighting a just cause on behalf of the hardworking cañeros? Leave the lady alone. You are the Prime Minis-

ter of the country. You must learn to accept criticism and learn to understand that even when people don’t agree with you, you must respect them.That’s a lesson you never seem to learn. Mr. Speaker, we all want the crop to start but that Agreement, we insist, must respect our cane farmers as equal partners in this industry and must value their role not only for today but also into the future. Destroying the BSCFA, as this legislation seeks to do, is not in anyone’s interest. It is certainly not in ASR’s interest, because the BSCFA is the only association certified by the Fairtrade Labelling organisation for sugar produced in Belize. The BSCFA is the only body with the infrastructure and the resource capacity to properly and effectively manage and organise cane delivery to the factory. Mr. Speaker, we heard the Prime Minister backtracking, suggesting that his Government will work to preserve the BSCFA from its demise. How hypocritical when he and his Government have been actively working to orchestrate the demise and destruction of the BSCFA. It is too late for that. The Belizean people will not be fooled. They understand who this Prime Minister is and what he and his Government stands for. Mr. Speaker, let the record show that on this date in history January 19th 2015, we on this side of the House representing the People’s United Party, we stood United and Strong with the cañeros and their families. To the Belizean people, we say let us unite behind our farmers, let us stand with our cañeros and let us not allow this Prime Minister and this UDP Government to divide us and tear us apart as a people. We stand with our brothers and sisters, we stand with our cañeros. Let us get the sugar roads fixed and let us get the crop started. Que viva los cañeros!

EDITORIAL The Prime Mischief Maker

he matter continues to make the rounds and has become a cause for concern. That matter is the report that Mr. Nuri Muhammad, long-time host of LOVE FM morning show, was ousted for a day. That day was last week Wednesday when the UDP Government was reeling from the exposure brought about by the Prime Minister calling a press conference and disgracing himself as being the champion for ASR/BSI and the destroyer of the cañeros. Belizeans saw through the hand gestures and serpent-like movements of the Prime Minister as he sought to put a coating over his blatant attack against the best interest of the cañeros. Damage control became paramount. Normally the Prime Minister handles his own damage control. But his press conference was too much. The over-kill and naked fronting for ASR/ BSI was too obvious. Even blind Jessie was able to see through Barrow. Two infamous flunkies of the Government were tasked to spread the Government lies to the nation. Both Minister Godwin Hulse and Minister Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington were booked to be the guests on the LOVE FM morning show. Even though it was two Ministers the Prime Minister still wanted complete control and for there to be no hard questions to upset the propaganda script. LOVE FM got the memo. A telephone call to Mr. Muhammad requested him not to appear the next morning on the show featuring the two Ministers, none of whom hold the portfolio of Agriculture or Economic Development. Upset at such an obvious manipulation, Mr. Muhammad sought to contact his boss, Rene Villanueva. To no avail. He was able to text the Prime Minister to inquire why the UDP Government would muscle him off the show. The show went on without Nuri Muhammad. It was a disaster. LOVE FM was unable to seriously challenge what the Ministers were saying. Their positions were that the agreement ASR/BSI wished (demanded) the cañeros to sign was wonderful for

them. According to the two Ministers everything that troubled the cañeros including their sacred retention of ownership of their canes were all misguided. ASR/BSI was a wonderful foreign investor and had wonderful intentions. The listening public remained sceptical and the cañeros knew they had been shafted by the Prime Minister. The media (not LOVE FM) cornered the Prime Minister after Monday’s House meeting and questioned him on the Nuri Muhammad matter. Falling back on his new stock response of “I didn’t know”; “I was not aware”, the Prime Minister slipped down in his response. He claimed that when Nuri Muhammad texted him he, the PM, called Rene Villanueva to require that Nuri be put back as host of the show. Aha! So the Prime Minister can call and interfere in LOVE FM staff placement. Gotcha! There is a disgusting and revolting side to the man who is the Prime Minister of Belize. There is the saga of Plus TV. A favourite of the Prime Minister who thought he was grooming and controlling Pastor Louis Wade. Government advertisements like the present Petro-Caribe funds were flowing. It didn’t take Pastor Wade to see through the Prime Minister and his government. Wade, who hosts the morning show on Plus TV, started asking probing questions and was critical of some of Barrow’s high-handedness. All government commercials were cut off from Plus TV and no more invitations to attend press conferences. The Prime Minister has a long history of having no respect for independent journalists or media personnel who asks the important questions at his press conference. He openly insults them and tries to belittle them. When a Prime Minister displays such scorn and contempt for the free flow of information and the important contribution that journalist play in our democracy, this must be cause for alarm. There are those who would say openly, it is the behaviour of a despot.

WOMAN IN THE HOUSE By Dolores Balderamos Garcia

BACK IN PORT Yesterday, Saturday I joined Gilroy Usher, Yolanda Schakron and the PUP Team of City Council Candidates in a campaign session and walk-through in Port Loyola. It was a spirited four hours or so of house-to-house campaigning in the Freedom Street and Jane Usher Boulevard area. Some twenty or more of us, decked out of course in blue, met as many people and stopped at as many homes as we could. The Blue Machine was in full swing, as we did our thing to bring the message of a PUP in fighting form and a Team and Leader fully committed to becoming City Mothers and Fathers, who will make a real difference for citizens and residents of the Old Capital. For me it was a veritable blast from the past. At times it was not easy for me to remember all the homes and streets of my old stomping ground. What I remembered perfectly well were the faces of longtime residents of Polling Area 22. It was a great pleasure making the re-acquaintances and putting in my words of support for our Team. There was strength in the number of team members as well as in the supportive campaigners and our Standard Bearer Gilroy. It was a shame seeing the deplorable condition that the streets and drains of Jane Usher Boulevard are in. Mostly there are no drains at all. One resident showed us water stains on the wall of the inside of her home where in very rainy weather water enters her family’s house. I had to shake my head when I thought that Port Loyola is now represented by a UDP ‘senior’ Minister who seems long ago to have forgotten about the people he should be serving, focussing no doubt on his own projects and himself. Does he know that the recurring cry from residents is that there is desperate need for more open spaces and parks for Port Loyola children to play? On the other hand it was good to see and to remember the work of the PUP when I represented the people of Port Loyola. They cannot take away

the fact that it was with the PUP that the first ever library for Port Loyola was constructed. Various basketball courts, including the one on Jane Usher Boulevard where we campaigned, were also built, and many streets and infrastructure projects were completed. Not to mention the real service and care for many needy persons for home repair and health and educational assistance and opportunities. It looked to me like nothing has been done for the area in twelve or more years. It is a Southside of Belize City disgrace and abomination that the current representative who is in his third term has done so little to develop the constituency. It was under Melvin Hulse that Faber’s Road was paved, and Boots thought that he could never lose in 1998 because of the said paving. I learned early on in politics that an infrastructure project is no guarantee of victory. The difference has to be PEOPLE and how AND how much we SERVE!! So many persons helped me when I was in Port Loyola. Rolando Perdomo, Louise Bevans, Mr. & Mrs. Lionel Tillett and others are of blessed memory, among several more. And I know I would do a grave disservice if I try to name all PUP stalwarts in the area. I would leave out many, so I won’t try to name everyone. However, it was really “deja vu” being BACK IN PORT on Saturday. The entire campaign conglomerate was warmly received. It is my fervent hope that we can continue to work hard to ensure that Port Loyola returns to the PUP fold. Fraternal and sisterly shoutouts, therefore, go to Levi Slusher (who, by the way, doesn’t look a day older), Ms. Lamb, Ms. Cano, Mr. Lopez, Mr. Longsworth and many more whom we visited. It is indeed time for positive change. It is time for Yolanda Schakron and her Team, and as well for indefatigable Gilroy Usher. Port Loyolans deserve to be treated better and served by people who genuinely care, not by self-serving megalomaniacs who care not, or nought, for those whom they ought to be working for.

Belmopan, January 17, 2015 The Belmopan Bandits won their 3rd Premier League football championship against the Police United. The Bandits upset the Police 4-0, even after the cops team had beaten the Bandits three times in this year’s competition: once in the regular season, and twice in the playoffs. Game 1 of the finals which were played on a muddy, soggy pitch at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium last Wednesday, January 14th ended in a nil-zip draw. The rains held up and the sun dried the pitch, allowing for a completely different level of play in Game 2 on Saturday night. Bandits’ striker Evan Mariano was streaking up the left sideline heading for the Police goal when the Police’s defense took him down inside the 18-yard box. The referee ruled penalty and Bandits’ goalie Woodrow West converted with ease for the Bandits’ 1st winning goal in the 23rd minute of play.

In the 2nd half, Police goalie Keith Allen held off attacks from David “Mikey” Madrid, Elroy Kuylen and Jordy Polanco, but he could not stop a right-away volley from Elroy Kuylen, who connected a rebound in front of the goal in the 67th minute: 2-0. Police’s Lennox “Criminal” Castillo, Franz Vernon and Darren Myeres Jr. entered the game, but they all came up empty while Jordy Polanco scored the Bandits’ 3rd goal in the 73rd minute and Denmark Casey Jr. added a 4th goal in the 81st minute to complete the 4-0 rout. FFB and PLB directors presented the individual awards in the award ceremony after the game. Justin Gentle led Holy Redeemer with 9 points while, James Garbutt’s Kylon Thurton scored 5pts. In Game 1 of the playoffs last Thursday, the St. John Vianney RC School boys eliminated the St. Joseph’s RC School boys 23-17. Reid …divided we fall! By G. Michael Reid Belize’s Parliamentarians met in the House of Representatives this past Monday to make an amendment to the Sugar Act which was ordered by the Supreme Court of Belize five years ago. The bill to amend the act was put through all three required readings in one sitting and was sent to the Upper House the following day. What is interesting to note is that while in opposition, the current Prime Minister railed incessantly about the practice of rushing bills through the House in one sitting. I have searched tirelessly but cannot find one Bill which has been presented by this government that has not gone through all three stages on the same day. There is an old Kriol saying that goes, “Duh suh nuh like duh”! The Prime Minister keeps insisting that this Act had to be amended in order for the 2014/2015 sugarcane season to begin. The question is, how come since 2010 when this court order was made, every season has begun without this amendment being made? In fact, the very same Wilfredo Magaña, who the Prime Minister hailed as the biggest hero in helping him to destroy the unity of the cane farmers, himself had to write a letter begging the Prime Minister to comply with this same said court order. In a letter dated July 14th, 2011, Magana wrote on behalf of his breakaway United Cane Farmers Association begging the Prime Minister to comply with the court order. In the letter, in which he had the backing of the Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association, the United Cane Farmers Association and the Belize Citrus Mutual, Magaña bemoaned that “the court has made a decision

and ruling and there is no respect to that particular ruling”. The letter informed the Prime Minister that, “We are at a period of tremendous economic uncertainty and by its inaction, the Government of Belize is further undermining confidence in our industries on which our livelihood depends. Years of hard work and millions of dollars of our investments are tied up in these two industries. With the lingering lack of clarity and resulting confusion, we have seen the value of our investment decline…” There is no record that Magaña and his counterparts ever received a reply and for sure, no amendment was made until this week. Of course, none of those groups had the financial clout of an American Sugar Refineries. The Prime Minister went to great pains to blame the Opposition, cane farmers and those he labeled as radicals, extremists and megalomaniacs for the delay of this year’s cane season. The fact is that all of those named and labeled wanted desperately to get the cane season started. The ones who did not want to start the season were the people at ASR who got full support from the Prime Minister and his minions. They kept insisting that a very unfair and one-sided agreement be signed before they would open the gates of the factory and begin milling. After promising to reach out to both sides and do what he could to reach a compromise, the PM went in with ASR and came out singing a different sankey. He did not even want to meet with farmers at that point but insisted that they, the farmers must sign the agreement or else. Realizing that he was not looking too good in this one, the Prime Minister went on television last Friday and tried to present a tough stance. Despite the fact that the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) had given in and agreed to sign the agreement (if we can call it that), ASR was insisting that BSCFA go back to a general assembly meeting a pass a resolution to the effect. Listening to the proceedings of the House on Monday, it was obvious that the Prime Minister’s heart was not fully in what he was doing. While he was his usual contemptuous and insulting self, his delivery was weak and he definitely did not take his “A” game. He spent much of his time lashing out at Audrey Matura-Shepherd

and trying to create mischief in the PUP leadership. For sure, the Prime Minister has spent much political capital pleasing and appeasing his colonial master and it will take a whole heap of Petro Caribe funds to regain the support that he has lost. No amount of money however, will ever be able to regain him the respect he surrendered in so publicly genuflecting to this white man; and he too, not even far up the chain of command in the command hierarchy of ASR. Shame on you Mr. Prime Minister but we cannot help but pity your humiliation! In trying to save face in the wake of a huge public outcry, the Prime Minister has been relying upon Godwin Hulse to do his damage control. Unfortunately, Hulse has long lost credibility in the eyes of the Belizean people and is now seen for just what he is; a complete sellout. Hulse, along with even more damaged goods in the person of Sedi Elrington has been making the media rounds trying to convince Belizeans that ASR are the good guys and that the breakup of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association was all done in the name of democracy. Our two Shakespearean fools however, realized that they would be no

match for regular talk show host Nuri Mohammed and the order was sent down that he had to be removed from the show. Certainly they would be no match for Krem’s Mose Hyde and did not even attempt to appear over there. The UDP also obviously understood that no way they could carry such a request to Krem. Could you just imagine a message to Evan X Hyde that his son Mose Hyde had to be removed because his minions could not handle the tough questions? Say what you will and I personally have had my differences with the Zinc Fence crew, but it is widely and wisely known that “dem bredda deh nuh roll suh!” Love FM looks very bad in complying with that directive and the UDP looks even worse for sending it. It can only be considered an outright attack against free speech which should not and cannot be tolerated. An attack on any part of the media is an attack on the entire media and all sectors should condemn this latest assault. The kitchen is getting hot and if the UDP cannot take this heat, they should consider getting out. Call the elections and spare yourselves more embarrassment. Belize deserves more mature leadership!

Why was Nuri Muhammad removed from LOVE FM morning show? Belize City, January 19, 2015 The sudden and unexplained removal of Nuri Muhammad as the host of the Love FM morning show has revived talks about the Barrow Administration’s incessant attacks on freedom of speech and the media. Muhammad, who is a well-respected leader of the Muslim Community, activist and senior media professional, was suddenly yanked from the Love FM morning show sometime last week. He didn’t appear on the set, conveniently, when two senior Government Ministers, Godwin Hulse and Hubert Elrington, appeared as guests to defend the Government’s role in the instability in the sugar industry. The show lacked the fiery debate that would be incited whenever Muhammad was present. It was also boring and very one-sided, with the mouthy Ministers talking non-stop and going mostly unchallenged by the two female hosts. Fortunately, the callers to the show appeared more informed and better able to call out the lies and deception of the UDP Ministers. Muhammad has not appeared on the Love FM show since. He did appear as a guest on the Sunday Review show on Krem Television over the weekend, where he hinted that his time at Love FM had expired. The lacklustre show is one story to tell, but the real issue has to do with what is, blatantly, another attack on freedom of speech and the clear manipulation of the media. Sources indicate that Muhammad was removed because he is deemed as a threat by agents of the UDP Government for being too outspoken and independent. That, to the vindictive and petty UDP, is synonymous to being anti-Government.

Certain UDP agents reportedly have high levels of influence on the Love FM media empire and that influence was exerted last week, getting Muhammad not to appear as the host when the two UDP ministers went on. We must add that when Love FM was inaugurated, it was reported that then PUP Minister Mark Espat held a special interest in the media company. Was this interest ever severed, or does it still exist? Espat, who has turned out to be one of the most vicious of political backstabbers, is now on the UDP payroll and is the one plotting and strategizing for the UDP. This is not the first time that a media house comes under attack by the Barrow Administration. In 2010, the UDP Government launched a campaign against Channel 5 because, again, they were deemed to be too critical of the Government. The Barrow Government stopped all their ads from airing on the tv station. This included ads from all Government departments and also Government-companies like Belize Telemedia Limited which is one of the biggest advertisers in the media landscape. The Prime Minister and Channel 5 found a compromise and the ban was lifted, pending constant review. Today, Plus TV faces a similar assault. No GOB or GOB-related ads are played on Plus TV. Additionally, the company is facing more than five lawsuits launched by UDP ministers. We at the BELIZE TIMES have also come under attack, but we are committed to voicing the cries of our our people. These attacks on our right to speech and the media are very dangerous to our democracy. It is the kind of rule that dictators practice to grab power. Take heed Belizeans.

New Sugar Act strips away cane farmers’ role as “partners” in industry Belize City, January 19, 2015 The Sugar Industry Amendment Bill passed in a hurry by the Barrow Administration’s through the House of Representatives on Monday January 20th and then by the Government’s majority in the Senate on Tuesday January 21st has greater implications on the sugar industry than clearing the way for freedom of association for farmers. The new law drastically changes the playing field for cane farmers by taking away key powers they held and transferring it to the very political and petty UDP Minister of Agriculture Gaspar Vega. Several amendments to sections of the Act give greater political control to Minister of Agriculture over branches of the industry which manage critical aspects that deal with cane farmer membership, cane delivery, cane quality, and the overall regulation of the industry. The consolidation of power by the Barrow Administration is dangerous. The Government, through the seat of the Chairman of the Sugar Industry Control Board, already had sufficient power to regulate the industry. Yet, over the last seven years they proved to be incompetent, ignoring their important role and turning a blind eye to the grave issues in the industry. This is the real reason why the Industry has constantly been in crisis. Now they have amassed even more power and greater responsibility. The amendments to Section 2 transfer power from the cane farmers to the Minister of Agriculture. Under the new law, each association shall nominate one representative to the SICB, but if there are more than 3 associations, they must JOINTLY nominate three representatives. The amendment stipulates that if the three associations cannot agree as

to who to appoint as their representatives, the Minister will step in and appoint these persons. The UDP has been very carefully to div ide the cane farmers today, setting up the perfect circumstances for the political Minister to have to step in to appoint these representatives. Similar critical changes have been made to the composition of the Sugar Cane Production Committee which organises delivery to the mill among cane farmers. Under the old Act, the appointment of the Chairman to this important body was done by the members of the SICB, but under the new Act this power is placed on the

MINISTER. The composition of the essential managing board known as the Sugar Cane Quality Control Authority (SCQCA) is also skewed now. With five members overall, two from BSI, two from the Associations JOINTLY, and another member from BSI and Association, it is unclear how the infusion of division and distrust among cane farmers will see the Associations working together. And just in case the SCQCA is dysfunctional, the Government has introduced a new

provision for that, which outlines that if “any functions assigned to the SCQCA which are not being performed…shall be performed by the Sugar Cane Production Committee (SCPC)”. As noted earlier, the head of the SCPC will now be appointed by the Minister. In introducing the Bill at Monday’s House Meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture Gaspar Vega claimed that one of the purposes of the revised law was to “take due account of the interests of all legitimate stakeholders”, but from all indications the Act has infused tremendous political control for the Government whose compromised position in favour of the private owners of Belize Sugar Industries has been exposed to all.

It’s Time for Change at City Hall By Gilroy Usher Sr. With sober thought the UDP does not deserve to be reelected to the Belize City Council in the municipal elections on March 4th. Five of the core responsibilities of the council are streets and drain maintenance, garbage collection, parks maintenance, traffic management, and transparency with public funds. The Council’s grade for carrying out those responsibilities is “F” for failure. The city deserves better, and that is why the PUP City Council slate led by successful businesswoman and activist Yolanda Schakron and I received a warm welcome as we campaigned from house to house in Port Loyola this past Saturday. While the council has fixed some streets with concrete, there is no accountability for the over $30 million the council says it has spent on fixing those streets. In undermining value for money, tenders have never been invited for the fixing of streets. Instead, contracts were given to persons with good UDP connection, many who have little experience in construction. Consequently, a number of the contractors have laughed all the way to the bank leaving Gill Street and other streets incomplete and others crumbling in less than six months instead of the thirty

Chaos at City Hall!! Dog-fight between Mayor and Councillor Dion Leslie over trip to Houston Belize City, January 19, 2015 There is heaping tension at City Hall after Councillor Dion Leslie was unceremoniously stripped of his two portfolios by Mayor Darrell Bradley. Leslie, who was up to last week in charge of Sanitation and Sister City Relations, learnt of the sudden change and demotion in the most denigrating of ways, via a phone text message sent out by the City Administrator Candace Burke late Friday evening. The decision was taken by Mayor Bradley after he learnt that Councillor Leslie had travelled to Houston, U.S.A., to negotiate unauthorized deals for the Council’s sanitation department. This jet-setting was against the Mayor’s knowledge or permission and he felt utterly disrespected. The Mayor decid-

ed to discipline Leslie, who we are told, offered no apology to the Mayor for his actions. The result is that Leslie is now in the same rank as Eric Chang, the pariah Councillor whose role in the Elvin Penner/Kim Won Hong immigration scandal still remains unclear. Leslie and Chang are now both Councillors with no portfolio and nothing to do except collect their monthly stipends. The situation is so tense that Prime Minister Dean Barrow has had to intervene, and he isn’t happy with Mayor Bradley. Flooding has also gotten worst in Belize City because the UDP Council has built streets without drains and has failed to clean drains in other parts of the municipality. With the least rain downtown areas such as Queen Street, Orange St., Hydes Lane and other parts such as Douglas Jones St, Freetown Road and other parts of the city become lagoons and the water takes hours to run off. Garbage collection is also a major problem in Belize City. Huge piles of unsightly and uncollected garbage greet people for days at street corners and hot spots. Does the Council deserve another term for such sloppy service? No brethren, no. Has Mayor Bradley and his Councilors done better with parks? No, a thousand times no. The council spent millions of dollars to renovate BTL Park, but people are now being charged by the same Council to access that area which should be a public facility. And it does not deal with a payment plan. Bradley and his crowd demand full payment “one lick”, hog and hair, for the removal of a person’s name from its black list. Yes, the UDP wants three more years at City Hall despite that mean-spirited service. No way brother. The UDP has controlled the Belize City Council for the past nine consecutive years. That’s excessive longevity. A child who was born in 2006 when the UDP was elected to the Belize City Council is now nine years. That’s a long time. As a result of having power at City Hall for so long, the UDP have become arrogant and full of themselves. They think only they know how to build this city and the rest of us are fools. That’s why they listen to no one and do as they please. Such arrogance was illustrated when Mayor Bradley ordered the lockup and fine of $500 on sanitation workers who threw some garbage in front of City Hall after the Mayor refused to address their concerns of long overdue payment for their work and discussion about the future of their jobs. The message is clear on the streets of Belize City; the present Council doesn’t deserve any term for its terrible, one-sided and inhumane service. On March 4th the people should take their money and vote them out of office. After nine consecutive years of neglect, it’s time for change at City Hall.

We don’t know if Dean had overdosed on his back-pain meds on Sunday night as he put the final ink to the Bill that will continue to oppress cane farmers, but he had certainly lost his mind when he tried to publicly meddle in the affairs of the PUP, claiming that “he knew” that Hon. Francis would not be Opposition Leader when the next House Sitting is called in March. Yes, deceitful Dean was back at it again, and we know why. eral Elections. Why are you afraid, Dean? Why are you so scared that you are fixated on Francis Fonseca? At the last two House Sittings, Dean has tried to play the role of the witch in Macbeth suggesting that a new leader would do the PUP well instead of the young and humble Hon. Francis Fonseca. Dean is always talking about the PUP record, but one record he is afraid to acknowledge is Hon. Francis’ near elections victory in 2012 which was just four years into Dean’s first term. Espats/Barrow cut another deal Belize City, January 21, 2015 An article that appeared in the Reporter newspaper last week confirmed reports that the Espats and Dean Barrow have cut yet another deal. According to the report, a multi-million dollar building located on Regent Street owned by Phillip Espat, who is

the brother of Mark Espat, has been purchased by the UDP Government at a value of $3.2 million. The building, which was once the former Supplies Control Building, will house the new National Bank office in Belize City. Mark Espat, everyone knows, is the Judas who betrayed the PUP and the good people of the Albert division, and who sold out to the UDP by resigning weeks before the 2012 elections so that the UDP could be victorious. Shortly after winning the elections, Espat was named Dean Barrow’s Economic Ambassador and since then has been on the UDP Government’s payroll collecting over $20,000 monthly. Now here comes this extra sweet deal. There have been no public announcements calling for tenders for a new building for the National Bank in Belize City. None. The UDP is simply using millions of dollars in tax payers’ money to seal political alliances. There is also an untold story of how the Espats have amassed so much wealth in real estate in prime

areas of Belize City. Across the street is another building owned by the Espats which is leased for tens of thousands of dollars monthly by BTB. The real story here is who is the master of the games? Barrow or the Espats? Who is using who and who is playing who? Who is the puppet? Yes, the national bank is coming to the old capital but before it gets here, $3.1 million in taxpayers’ money will make it to Espat’s private account. Tell us Dean, who is the puppet?

This has become very obvious following the August 2014 intervention by the Prime Minister after the Mayor had consented to the detention of over 50 sanitation workers who protested in front of City Hall. The Prime Minister reined in the Mayor and forced him to overturn his decision, and to also promise to hire all the workers as of January 20th as an act of contrition. Bradley submitted to Barrow’s commands, but in the weeks that followed he expressed dissent and personal discomfort with the decision. He even considered pulling the plug on pursuing re-elections in the March 4th municipal race, which is something Barrow has been carefully preserving for his own selfish political survival.
