Dear Editor, It is past time for Dr. Peter Allen to clear his desk and resign. But he must not take the cabinet and computer files and desk notes nor shred them. There has been scandal after scandal and Allen has been in the thick of it. Just imagine… 13 babies dead at KHMH, damning Auditor General’s reports, financial wrongdoing, political manipulation of the health system, and more. As a layman, I feel that there is too much conspiracy, deception and outright dishonesty from those at the top of the Ministry of Health. Clearly, the health of our people is not their priority. I believe many heads should roll along with Dr. Peter Allen’s. Incompetence has taken over the Ministry. They mask it with propaganda and by keeping things ‘hush hush’. There is another such case. Within the last two months two young male breadwinners have had both their legs amputated because of negligence. The first guy was taken to KHMH for injuries to his leg from an accident. He was later transferred to a private hospital and had his leg amputated because of poor medical attention and care. In the other case, the young man had surgery done on his leg at the KHMH. He later returned to KHMH because his leg’s condition worsened. When the attending doctor looked at the young man’s leg carefully, a medical tool was found inside. He was immediately taken to surgery and leg had to go. This is a shame and disgrace that our hospitals operate under such neg-

Dear Editor, In trying to make their case for the promotion of the homosexual lifestyle, some advocates have been equating the “circumstances” of homosexuals to that of the enslavement of Black people and the subsequent post-slavery discrimination. This is perhaps one of the greatest insults to Black people everywhere--heterosexual, homosexual or otherwise! The enslavement of Black people is the single greatest crime against humanity and one for which Europe is yet to make recompense. To hear advocates of the homosexual agenda trivialize it, as they have been doing as of late, must outrage every Black person in Belize and indeed the world. Black people and homosexuals are not similarly circumstanced! Homosexuals have never been captured, chained and transported thousands of miles away from their homeland and enslaved for centuries! They have never been sold like chattels. They have never been deprived of their culture: their language, their food, their

Dear Sir: America has morphed from super hero of liberation and freedom to colonizing bully. Friday after next, 6th June, will mark the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. On 6th June, 1944, youthful Americans stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, to free Europe from the clutches of German Nazi terror and tyranny. Glorious young warriors waded, landed defying death, conquered, rebuilt and then left. I was only 6 years old and could not then comprehend the full meaning of what America was doing and did for humanity. As an adult I have prayed that what America had done would last forever as the most powerful monument of man’s everlasting hunger for freedom. A half decade or so passed, and much of my time was consumed watching cowboy movies. I became enchanted by the unselfish heroism portrayed in such movies as Shane. This is the story of a converted gun-fighter who stops by and decides to stay to work on a family farm. Their ligence. Dr. Allen, we know that you have been informed of these instances especially the second incident. Sir, it is time you exercise a bit more openness and transparency on yourself and your performance. 2014 religion. They have never been made to work like beasts of burden for meager rations and without proper compensation. They have never been beaten and killed at the whims of their masters, and with impunity. They have never had their women raped and impregnated--their race diluted. All this and more Black people have had to endure. And why? Simply because of the colour of their skin! The crime against Black people did not stop with the end of slavery. It continued albeit in a different form. Blacks were segregated and had to fight to be integrated, to stand as equals with their former enslavers. Homosexuals on the other hand have never been segregated; they enjoy equal opportunities to jobs, education, land, healthcare, etc. Heck, many of them hold high political offices and appointments in Belize. It amazes me how it is then that they can even attempt to put themselves in the same lake much less the same boat as “Black people”. Some argue that slavery was a long time ago and that Black people should “get over it”. If you are Black and share that view, then one can understand how we ended up enslaved in the first place. Cleverly, the global architects of the homosexual agenda have hitched their campaign to the recent social construct: “human rights”. It is my view that there are only two inherent human rights: the right to life and the right to liberty. Slavery assaulted both! The Jews suffered horrendous discrimation at the hands of the Nazis in the last century, but have you ever heard the advocates of the homosexual agenda compare the “plight” of the homosexuals with the “plight” of the Jews? Economy Slumps!!! Barrow drives Belize to the reef! Belize City, May 28th, 2014 Belize’s economy under the Barrow Administration contracted in the first quarter of the year, according to the latest data presented by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) on Wednesday, May 28th 2014. “We see a slight dip in the economy in the first quarter when compared to the same period of last year of roughly 0.4%,” stated Director of SIB Glen Avilez. This deceleration, which follows an entire year (2013) of dismal economic performance, indicates that there has been absolutely no effort by the Government to boost the country’s economic state in 2014. SIB’s research shows that the economic slump was due to a weak agriculture sector and tumbling oil exports. The agriculture sector is on life support. Production of Bananas, Citrus and Sugar fell by almost 10%. Sugar production dipped the most as a result of a two-month

impasse between the new owners of the factory and cane farmers over the sharing of bagasse profits. It is unlikely that sugar production will recover in the 2nd quarter because of the start of the rainy season. Rice, which was always known as a traditional industry, is no longer in the picture as the Barrow Administration has successfully decimated that small sector. The SIB noted that over the agriculture sector suffered a 30% or $26 million loss in the first quarter. The petroleum industry, on which the Barrow Administration has anchored their Budget, has been decelerating fast. Crude oil production has fallen from 221,000 barrels of oil in the first quarter in 2013, to 170,000 barrels in 2014. It also fell by more than half since 2010, when production peaked to 385,000 barrels. “There were only two oil shipments during the quarter, causing receipts to fall by more than $17 million,” according to the SIB. Warning Signs

Unlike Avilez who advised that one should not “read too much” into the first quarter economic statistics, the BELIZE TIMES warns Belizeans that the indicators are not only a sign of the tough times, but also of tougher times to come. In 2009, Belize’s economy also contracted in the first quarter and by October the Prime Minister was declaring recession in the country. At the moment, Belize’s economy has all the characteristics of one that remains in recession – no growth and no investments. While we cannot predict with certainty that the economy will continue in the dismal state, the indicators are a warning sign of what we should expect. With no ideas coming out of Barrow’s dodo bird Cabinet, Belizeans will have to continue enduring a life of pain and hard times, watching their way of life destroyed by a bunch that put politics and self-interest ahead of the country.

03 3 UDP scavengers land on NCL deal Godwin Hulse says UDPS must get jobs Belize City, May 28, 2014 Sources have told the BELIZE TIMES that Norwegian Cruise Line officials are angry at the Barrow Government for sending an official team of UDP scavengers to demand that only UDPs should be getting jobs from their project. The head scavenger has turned out to be no other than sanctimonious Godwin Hulse who leads the UDP Cabinet Subcommittee on Investment. Hulse was instructed by the UDP National Party Council to summon NCL officials to a meeting with all UDP standard bearers from the South. Those standard bearers have been complaining that NCL was not treating them properly and their people “were not eating”. Using their authority of being in Government, the UDP have demanded that NCL officials inform UDP Standard Bearers first of any vacancies and that once their people they apply – those applications must be givContinued on page 23

A New and Higher Standard The comments made by UDP Minister of State Mark King last week declaring that UDP’s come first, Belizeans second, and PUP’s last are not shocking to anyone who has seen and heard king during his brief and insignificant time in public life. He is loud, arrogant, brutish, and mainly just ignorant.

Nevertheless, we should not simply dismiss these comments because they came from king. No, the truth is that king’s comments reflect the thinking of Prime Minister Dean Barrow and the entire UDP Cabinet. From the beginning of his tenure as PM, Barrow essentially declared “to the victor the

spoils” and has largely supported the view that it is “UDP time fu eat”. This is the mindset of the present UDP administration. Politics above all else. Only UDP’s must benefit. Only UDP’s are good enough to get a job, to own land,

2014 to get scholarships, to get a boost. Only UDP mothers matter on Mother’s Day. This is a sick and dangerous mentality that breeds disharmony, resentment, and anger in a society. All Belizeans must reject this approach to governing. In 2014 we must demand a new and higher standard from our political parties, one in which all our people are treated equitably, respectfully, and fairly regardless of their political persuasion. The PUP understands this and offers Belize this new and higher standard.

Heading to the Reef! “Listen to me, when you see that group together, Esquivel, Net Vasquez and what is the next one?...Barrow…stay away from them. Take my advice. Anytime you see that group together. They have never yet been able to take us through a five year period without landing us on the reef and that is exactly where we are heading right now.” – Hubert Elrington – September 29, 2009 It is that classic statement by H. Elrington that will always remind us of the danger which the UDP is to Belize. True to his words, during the past six years of the Dean Barrow regime, Belizeans have experienced a terrible deterioration in their way of life and standard of living. Belize has been landed on the reef. Week after week, month after month, the price of food and household items at the grocery shops and supermarkets rose higher and higher. Wages for workers have gone no where. The last time wages went up, was under a PUP Government. This dire situation went from bad to worse. The health of the people was the first victim. NHI was suspended and even the primary care benefits offered during the PUP administration were severely cut back. The UDP finally decided to give life to NHI but now we see what the true purpose was, as reports of the mishandling of funds to the tune of hundreds of thousands are rearing their ugly heads. There is no safety net for Belizeans. Our hardworking monies that should be held in trust at the Social Security Fund has been abused, millions paid for some shares in the Barrow takeover of BTL, millions more went to BEL. An additional $1.7 million (that we know about) was given to the UDP candidates to use for campaign expenses in a desperation bid to buy the March 7 2012 elections. The unemployment rate has never been as high as it is today. This is most distressing at this time when thousands of graduates are preparing to join the job market. Jobless, already at 40%, will increase. The latest Statistical Institute of Belize data shows the terrible shape our agriculture industry is in. The sugar industry is facing tough times. Rice farmers have lost hope on the Government after corrupt practices of the Ministry and the Marketing Board closed them down. The productive sector has haemorrhaged with high taxation and high interest rates at the Banks which have brought business and commerce to its knees. DFC foreclosures on houses have driven scores of families out of their homes. Just last week, hundreds of homes were advertised for sale in local newspaper. What does the Government say or do about all of this? Nothing! Belize is being destroyed by the dictatorial crony capitalist Barrow regime. To mishandle foreign investors is one thing, but to abuse and treat your own people as second class citizens as Mark King has said is the UDP policy, is out of order. Belizeans across the nation are outraged. This outrage will soon result in direct action to save our country. The masses are not happy Mr. Barrow…you have failed the nation.

BIG UP LADYVILLE TECH!! Every week, almost every day, we are hearing of more and more instances of corruption and the abuse of public trust and misuse of public funds. It is quite dismaying, and often it is difficult to seek and to find good things that are happening in our communities. Last week I received an invitation from Ladyville Technical High School to attend a Luncheon that was held to celebrate the school’s first place finish in the Innovation Challenge that took place recently. I was happy to RSVP right away, as I have visited the school, its Principal, faculty and students and the campus as a whole. I have been very

impressed. At around midday on Thursday, May 22nd in the school’s dining hall a sumptuous meal was served to the successful students, faculty, a few parents and the other invited guests. The cooks and servers were all staff and students of the catering and hospitality programs. Also in attendance was chairman of Ladyville Tech’s Board of Directors, Mr. Mariano Williams. We greatly enjoyed an appetizer, full meal, dessert and an original natural fruit juice created by the students themselves, and we were welcomed by Principal Diane Wesby. Thereafter, teacher Louis Underwood described the waste management project that the win-

ning students had put together and presented as their winning entry. The participating students, whose names I am very proud to mention, are Ryan Staine, Malachi Everett, Gina Barnett, Sarkis Flowers and Kevaughn Vasquez. They also spoke about the project and how they created it with the guidance of Mr. Underwood. All those in attendance congratulated the students themselves and their mentors, as well as Principal Wesby, Vice Principal Ardeth Rudon and the staff on a job well done. Ladyville Tech, as it is known for short, opened its doors fifteen years ago through the vision of Hon. Ralph Fonseca, Mr. Luis Alpuche, Ms. Vincent Parks and other leaders who saw the need for a high school in the Ladyville area. Since then it has grown to a student enrollment of over 400 students and from strength to strength under the firm guidance and leadership of Ms. Wesby. It is known as an institution that encourages strong discipline, and it has various technical courses in its curriculum in addition to the usual academic disciplines. Students must take one or more of the technical training courses such as hospitality, catering, sewing, woodwork, animal-husbandry, plumbing and electrical training. And the school, through its sports instructor, Daniel Smith, has also recently done

07 7 admirably in various sporting disciplines such as softball and track and field both at home and abroad. I asked Principal Wesby whether graduates of Ladyville Tech have been able to find employment once they have completed their course of study and graduated. I was extremely happy to hear her reply that almost without exception Ladyville Tech’s graduates have been able to find and keep employment once they leave the school. I believe that their technical training has made all the difference. But also not to be overlooked at all is the existence of sound and sterling leadership. Kudos are very much in order to Principal and Vice Principal Wesby and Rudon, and to all the Board, faculty and staff. Ladyville Tech is a top notch high school. To use boxing terminology it is punching way above its category, and it is a shining light in secondary education and technical and vocational training. Keep up the good work Ms. Wesby and all your associates. Belize Rural Central and indeed all of Belize can surely use more professionals like you, who take your calling as teachers and administrators as a sacred vocation. Best wishes for the future of fifteen year old Ladyville Technical High School!!

Paid some in Shillings…but Brother B Wants all! Belize City, May 28, 2014 On Tuesday morning Edmond Castro’s attorney, Denys Barrow, was paid with almost 10,000 shillings held inside two pillow cases by Belize Rural North constituent Trevor Vernon. The shillings were valued at $2,489.50 and delivered to his lofty Coney Drive law firm by Vernon as payment towards the $5,000 court cost involved in the Supreme Court case against Castro. But it was not enough for Barrow. The attorney/ brother of Prime Minister Barrow was apparently irked by Vernon’s actions and he applied to the Court for a writ of execution which was granted to him. With this writ, Barrow instructed a Supreme Court bailiff to travel to Burrell Boom and find Trevor Vernon’s house on Wednesday. Once there, the bailiff identified Vernon’s belongings to be sold off by the Court if he is unable to pay the remaining $2,510.50 within five days. It seems Brother B is hell bent on getting all his money. This, after Barrow was hell bent on getting Castro’s trial dismissed at whatever cost. Castro was accused by Vernon of violating his oath of office when he misused public funds belonging to the Belize Airport Authority. This scandal was exposed by the BELIZE TIMES in January 2014, when cheques valued at tens of thousands of dollars were issued to Castro for personal and political purposes. Castro claimed that he needed the money because he is a “poor man”. Barrow said it was

The 10,000 shillings paid by Vernon were monies derived from donations from residents who have had enough of Castro’s distasteful actions. The next 10,000 plus shillings will also come from BRN voters who have had enough of the tilapia Minister.

Tommy Lee Sparta is one of the first dancehall artists to be deported from another country in recent times. He is taking the Dominican government to court after being deported from the Caribbean island in February. Tommy Lee, whose real name is Leroy Russell, along with three members of his entourage were deported from Dominica on February 24 this year just hours after arriving in the country for a concert. Authorities in Dominica says the 26 year-old dancehall star posed a security risk to the country. But Tommy Lee’s lawyer Burt Samuels has filed documents in the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) to force the Dominican government to compensate the artist.

BES wins Belize District volleyball championships Belize City, May 23, 2014 Belize Elementary School girls and boys are the undisputed 2014 Belize District Volleyball primary school champions. They were undefeated throughout the competition. The female team won over the Holy Redeemer School girls 25-12 and 25-10 on Tuesday, May 27, to secure their 4th district championship. In the boys’ final, the BES boys won over Crooked Tree Government School 25-14 and 25-20. BES is now preparing for the nationals which will be held in Belize on Friday, June 6.

Smart No Limits upset Western Ballaz 54-48 San Ignacio, May 23, 2014 SMART No Limits of Belize City pulled off a surprize upset: 82-60 over the second ranked Cayo Western Ballaz when the National Elite Basketball League (NEBL) playoffs began at the Sacred Heart College auditorium last Friday night, May 23. Andrew Ortiz and Greg “Chippy” Rudon led the SMART offensive to lead by 6 points, but Cayo recovered to narrow the led to 24-22 at the half. The Cayo team was without their shooting star Richard Troyer, and SMART No Limits took it away in the 2nd half. Dangriga underway

Dangriga Town, May 25, 2014 In its ongoing commitment to the development of Dangriga, the Dangriga Town Council is in the completion stages of opening a beautiful thatch kiosk on “Y NOT Island”. This is the first of two kiosks planned for the “Y NOT Island”, which will offer employment to enterprising Dangriganas as well as offer a relaxing atmosphere for patrons. Plans are also underway for the upgrade and improvement of the Havana Creek area in line with the Belize Municipal Development Project (BMDP). A rendering of what is envisioned for the area has been completed. This major infrastructural project will stimulate economic growth through tourism and it will also make the entire Havana Creek area more aesthetically pleasing. The hard work continues and Mayor Gilbert Swaso and his Councilors are ready, able and prepared to take on the challenges in order to make Dangriga better for all its residents and visitors.

Author, Poet Maya Angelou Dies

May 28, 2014 Maya Angelou, the celebrated poet, writer and activist who rose from a childhood of poverty in Arkansas to become an American literary icon, died Wednesday morning at her home in Winston-Salem, N.C., at

the age of 86. Born in 1928 as Marguerite Johnson, Ms. Angelou led a multitude of lives. She drove a streetcar in San Francisco, was a newspaper editor in Egypt and worked as a cook and a prostitute when she was a destitute single mother. She wrote television and movie screenplays, performed on the stage as a singer, dancer and actor and released an album of Calypso music. He was famous for his storytelling and fables that have been handed down through time in his name. Many of us as children grew up reading Aesop’s Fables and drew valuable life lessons from them. One popular fable told by Aesop dealt with a man whose sons often quarreled among themselves. To show them the benefit of working together, the man gets a bundle of sticks, tie them together and tasked each of them to break the bundle in two. As expected, none of the brothers could break the sticks when they were tied together. The man then untied the bundle and gave them each a single stick which they could then easily break. In explaining the moral of the story, the man tells the young men: “My sons, if you are of one mind, and unite to assist each other, you will be as this bundle, uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies; but if you are divided among yourselves, you will be broken as easily as these sticks.” The Bible gives a similar lesson when in Mark 3:25, Jesus says to his disciples: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.” It is a time tested and proven truism that has endured for thousands of years and remains an important life lesson to learn.

Belize City, May 23, 2014 If the unadulterated trash that came out of the mouth of UDP representative Mark King was not such a serious and callous statement, we would consider it another episode of his usual crude comedy. But the truth is that his “UDPs first, Belizeans second, PUPs last” comment hit a nerve in all right-thinking Belizeans who thought they had seen and heard

the worst of the UDP with the likes of Gaspar “Not Normal” Vega, Pablo “KHMH Babies” Marin and Elvin “Passport” Penner. The truth is, also, that King was speaking first as a UDP area representative and then on behalf of his Leader – reiterating a position that Dean Barrow had already publicly declared at the start of his term in 2008 when he stated that “to the victor goes the spoils”, later followed by his defense of the mass firings in the Ministry of Education and his warning that there will be cases of “collateral damage” because “it is our turn”. But King’s crass talking seems more revolting. It could be that Belizeans are become less and less tolerant of the UDP’s disrespect of our people and their constant, ruthless attacks on our democracy. It could also be that it’s not always just about the message, but the messenger too. You see, King has been riding a high horse ever since he won an election by mere luck. He crawled out of mud just before entering politics a few years ago. He was a nobody (polit-

ically speaking) who now wants to live the life of a King while everyone else should be a subservient. The irony of it all though is that King, while he was a nobody, got the break of his life when he obtained a loan through Youth For the Future’s entrepreneurship programme to start his first security company under a PUP Government. Yes, under a PUP Government!! The loan for King was approved without anyone asking if he were UDP or PUP. He went on to open his company and run for City Council elections. King’s miniature success in life can be attributed to the PUP – a party that does not practice the tribalism which the UDP endorses. So even with his own life story being a lesson worth learn-

17 ing, this UDP idiot had the face of brass to talk about discriminating Belizeans based on who is UDP and who is PUP. We must note that not a single UDP representative, nor their Secretariat, has distanced themselves from the statement made by Mark King. This means that the UDP has embraced this foolish policy which says that Belizeans will be marked and punished simply for being Belizeans or for being PUPs.

Belize’s socialites, led by “First Lady” Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow provide a good case study at the level of Maslow’s social needs for love, belonging, self-esteem, the need to feel respected and to have social and celebrity status. Modern socialites have an insatiable need for status, and philanthropy is the new status symbol. According to The New York Times, socialites spend between $98,000 (U.S. dollars) and $455,000 U.S. per year to maintain their roles. Just the evening wardrobe of an individual regularly attending society functions can cost $100,000 annually. Most times these designer clothes and handbags are made in sweatshops overseas, by women and children, denied living wages. A perusal of the internet reveals an abundance of pictures of Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow in her role as Belize’s foremost celebrity and philanthropist. There

The kind of media hype tends to undermine the efforts of hardworking, ordinary people working for Belize’s longstanding and essential NGOs such as BFLA, Hand in Hand Ministries, Youth Enhancement Services (YES), YMCA, YWCA, Red Cross, BCVI, Toledo Maya Women’s Association, B.E.R.T., and a hundred others compete unfairly with the Prime Minister’s wife for increasingly scarce funds. The First Lady is hailed as a champion in the fight against cancer which landed her on the cover of the Women of Strength issue of Complexd Woman online magazine. In contrast, Juliet Soberanis, founder of the Belize Cancer Society (and founding member of the National Organization for Prevention of Child Abuse), remains inconspicuous, in the shadow of Mrs. Barrow. There are numerous role models in Belize who provide examples of Maslow’s highest level of self-actualization. Former first ladies, Mrs. Joan Musa, who dedicated a life time to BCVI, and Mrs. Kathy Esquivel, first president of the National Women’s Commission( and former chair of the National Aids Commission), are good examples of women who led selfless lives of public service, without taking a photo for every charitable deed. There are Jesuit educators, Pallottine Nuns, Joan Burke of BFLA, Yvette Burke of BERT, Sister Elsa Oliva of Stella Maris, countless men and women who have dedicated their whole lives to the public service throughout Belize. Charles Dickens harshly criticized those “do-gooders” whose so called “philanthropy” served their vanity rather than the poor. In Bleak House, Dickens

describes Mrs. Pardiggle with her rapacious benevolence, the predecessor of our modern socialites and our First Lady of Bling. Pope Francis and other religious leaders are increasingly denouncing the global financial system, the deified market that tyrannizes the poor, turning humans into expendable consumer goods. Mrs. Barrow is the first lady of a developing country and she is sending the wrong signals with her lifestyle example. There is a subtle implication that ordinary citizens are unsophisticated, uncouth, and classless nobodies, unless featured on the worldwide web and international glamour magazines, attend lavish “fund-raising” galas, or attend her “obligatory for public servants” 20,000 strong political rallies. She flaunts a lifestyle of lavish spending on goods and services for the sole purpose of social status, a behavior social scientist Thorstein Veblen, termed “conspicuous consumption”. The very conspicuous Special Envoy introduces lifestyle envy to Belize, promoting lifestyle norms well beyond our incomes by promoting the lifestyles of the rich and famous as superior and enviable. In Belize, poverty and inequality is growing. This is because of an unsustainable debt-led, consumption promoting and import-intensive economic growth strategy. We live in a global financial system which is a Ponzi scheme. It promotes infinite growth, infinite profits and infinite consumption. Mainstream media and commercial advertising subtly persuades us to desire what we don’t need. It promotes excessive consumption which leads to the acquiring of status symbols: bigger houses, more expensive cars, Hummers, designer clothing, Apple computers, the latest I-phone, I-pods, and overfilled drawers. To live is to consume, but excessive consumerism crosses boundaries, affecting the needs of others. The Inspiration Centre is a multi-million dollar complex built with private and public funds. It was not a donation from Kim Kardashian or Angelina Jolie. It will require a budget with operating expenses, repairs and maintenance, insurance, salaries, social security, equipment and assets, telephone, water and electricity bills which is unsustainable, if managed by any NGO dedicated to the rehabilitation of special needs children. The Inspiration Centre is a “dream satisfied”, proof of superior status, and, an example of excessive consumerism that crosses boundaries affecting funds available for Stella Maris and the Special Education Unit, the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, BFLA, and other bona fide NGO’s in Belize. If we are to improve domestic capacity and Belize’s track record of development, then we must unsubscribe from the unsustainable lifestyles proffered by our local wannabe’s, self-constructed attempts at celebrity at the expense of the public purse. If we are to increase trust and cohesiveness in our Belizean society then we must embrace the examples of our numerous Beliz-

2014 eans, who without public adulation and self-flattery, eke out a miserable but self-fulfilling existence with meager pay, in schools, hospitals, public service facilities, and NGO’s throughout the country. These are ordinary people with uncommon grace, kindness, generosity, benevolence and compassion despite the most undesirable working conditions, who provide us with an example of Maslow’s highest level of self-actualization.

The Gay Agenda will quickly destroy freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom of conscience. Do I need to prove this after the experience of Mr. Bain, U.W.I. professor who only gave scientific information about the dangers of the homosexual lifestyle? Is this not what scientists should do? So what has happened to academic freedom? What does freedom of speech mean? The Gay Agenda threatens and will destroy the very principles upon which democracy has been built. Freedom of speech is what makes democracy possible, because criticism exercises a corrective and leveling influence so that the rich and powerful are made aware that all men are equal before the law, and there is no elitism or social privilege in a democracy. This is one of the great dangers of the Gay Agenda: it will create a class that may criticise you but cannot be criticized. They will become the new aristocracy. This is repugnant to the concept of democracy. In Christian charity I say welcome to Carlos Moreno. Unfortunately, he has characterised himself to me not as a true friend but as new Conquistador, bent on re-colonization, instead of building bridges for a new age of equality in friendship. Therefore, when he extends his hands to give, I will see the duplicity of the conqueror attempting to trick me as his forebears deceived our ancient Amerindian ancestors. The perception of my black brothers will be worse: his extended hands will invoke the visions of the chains of slavery. Alas and alack! I never thought I would grow to despise America! Homestyle Jerk Chicken Looking for something a little different to treat Dad to this Father’s Day? Well, if you can’t make it to Nan’s Sports Grill why not try your hand at making jerk chicken. Ingredients 1 Scotch bonnet or habanero chile, stemmed 1 bunch scallions, cut into pieces 2 cloves garlic, smashed and peeled 1 1/2 teaspoons dried thyme 2 tablespoons packed dark-brown sugar 1 tablespoon ground allspice 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons lime juice 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, plus more for grill 3 1/2 to 4 pounds chicken pieces Salt and pepper to taste Directions In a food processor, puree chile, scallions, garlic, thyme, brown sugar, allspice, soy sauce, lime juice, and oil. In a large zip-top bag, toss chicken with paste. Refrigerate at least 1 hour (or up to 1 day). Heat a grill or grill pan to medium-low. Clean and lightly oil hot grill. Season chicken with salt and pepper; grill, covered, turning often to prevent charring, until cooked through, 45 to 50 minutes. Serve with your favourite side dishes such as rich and beans, potato salad, a fresh garden salad and a cold beer.

High School Graduation Season 2014 Featuring: St. Catherine’s Academy, Belize High, Canaan SDA High and Ladyville Technical High

Humes (Freelance Reporter) BELIZE CITY, Wednesday, May 28th, 2014 St. Catherine’s Academy will have their graduation on Saturday, May 31st, 2014 at the Ramada Princess Hotel in Belize City. According to Principal Ms. Salome Tillett, 121 out of 127 students will take that march down those isles. The Valedictorian is 17-year-old Ms. Lina Huang (with a grade average of 98. 1%), the Salutatorian is 15-year-old Ms. Anita Wu (with a Grade Average of 97.2%), and the 3rd place will be 16-year-old Ms. Maria J. Martinez (with a Grade Average of 95.6%). The BELIZE TIMES managed, in the harried midst of their preparations for Graduation, to secure an interview with the top three at the Hudson Street campus on Wednesday. The trio, all representing the class of 4SG (Science/General) are young by age, but certainly mature by spirit. They have not only navigated the 4-year ‘rollercoaster’ called high school, but also survived and even thrived and exceeded the highest of heights to stand where they are today. All three are aiming for and meeting excellence plans to study abroad. Lina will attend Syracuse University in New York, USA and major in either Finance or International Business, with hopes to join the ‘big money game’ on Wall Street. Anita will be studying Accounting just north of her, and dreams of becoming an Accountant. But it’s Maria, the scion of doctors, who plans to follow in her parents’ footsteps, studying in Merida, Mexico at the Universidad Anahwac Mayab. And like her parents, she’s thinking big, planning to specialize in either plastic surgery or invasive cardiology. Speaking of parents, when it comes to inspiration for the success they will be celebrating on Saturday, it’s all over the place – parents, the SCA teachers, even the Valedictorian herself has inspired competition from her nearest rival, with Anita admitting that “Lina inspired me to fight and get to a higher level.” So what are their feelings about graduating from the historic institution? All three, without much overkill to it, said they were more than proud to join such a historic lineage of academic excellence, with Lina summing it up simply like this: “I’ll DEFINITELY miss this school….” Anita and Maria both concur, Anita admitting the time in school “[went by] like the blink of an eye… so quick” and Maria saying she’s ‘looking forward’ to being a future graduate of the institution and called it “a BIG deal…very nice”. And as for their advice to their fellow youth, Lina kept it simple: “Work hard and dream BIG!” Anita shared two key pieces of advice: “They told me I couldn’t; that’s why I DID” and “Always cherish your moments, because you don’t know when it will be over….” For Maria, it boils down to these: “Take life one step at a time…” and “Don’t give up on your goals, work towards them”. uating class as a “pioneering class”, since it is the first 4-year term completed in the school’s history. Leading their ranks are 4 bright, if not uniquely contrasting individuals that bolster the school’s notable motto, “Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow”. They are: Ms. Alexis Musa (Valedictorian, of Class 4T, with a GPA of 4.5), Mr. Jeremy Quinto (Salutatorian, of Class 4W), Ms. Tala Safa (who holds the 3rd highest GPA) and Ms. Jodie

Shen (holds the 4th highest GPA, and will be giving the introduction at the Graduation Ceremony). If nothing else, Ms. Musa and Mr. Quinto are close friends, closer rivals and contrast as much as they agree – the brainy and ambitious 17-year-old, Belize City-born-andraised Alexis, with a penchant for individuality, and 17-year-old Jeremy - the super-cool, studious one. But beneath all of those traits are two hard-working, don’t-know-

2014 the-meaning-of-quit students, who both sat with the BELIZE TIMES for an interview last Thursday. Alexis plans to go to SJC Junior College, major in Accounting and dreams of being a corporate lawyer, while Jeremy plans to study Astronomy at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, USA in hopes of working in space exploration and research. And in the age-old question of who inspires their success, they seem to agree on that too – their parents. For Alexis, it’s her mom, because “she always pushes me to do better…. [she really] inspires me.” For Jeremy, while he has a strict father pushing him to work, Mom’s somewhat more reasonable, which make their continued support ‘balance out’. At Canaan Seventh-Day Adventist High School, on Coney Drive, the students are achieving big things. Their graduating class is proof of that, with 57 graduates out of 63 students (24 girls and 33 boys) to march up at the Ramada Princess Hotel in Belize City on Sunday, June 1st, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. Leading this class of 2014 are: Mr. Erick Morales (Valedictorian, of Class 4Academic (II), with a grade average of 95.9%), Mr. Jose Guardado (Salutatorian, also of 4Academic (II), with a grade average of 94.1%), and Ms. Joshanna Jesse (3rd place). The BELIZE TIMES interviewed the top 2 last Friday, and like their fellows at Belize High, there are contrasts and similarities between them. While Morales and Guardado both worked extremely hard to get to where they stand now, they did so not only as the children of immigrants (both have families originally hailing from Guatemala and El Salvador respectively), but also battling the rigors of high success and almost failure. For the 18-year-old Morales, he wanted to leave Canaan after his 1st year due to mounting financial issues, but with the help of the Social Security Board (SSB), he stuck it out to achieve his current grade average and Valedictorian status (something he admitted that he didn’t think he’d achieve). For Guardado, also 18, his ambition after graduating top of his class out of Primary School was to be a Valedictorian – and he did well enough in his first 3 years at Canaan too, only to “slip up” in his focus and end up not only 2nd in his class, but as the Salutatorian of the 2014 class (although admittedly, it’s still not a bad place to be). As far as their collegiate and career ambitions, Erick plans to attend Corozal Junior College and major in Tourism (a degree that he has ‘a lot of plans’ for), while Jose wants to attend the University of Belize and major in English Education, with hopes to become a secondary school teacher, something worthy to aspire to after 4 years of seeing how it was done at Canaan. In terms of inspirations, it was Jose’s mom (who sells fruit and vegetables with his father at the Queen Square Market in Belize City) who led the way, because she “… provided me with [this] education…. She was in charge of everything.” For Erick, it was his teachers, encouraging him to ‘keep faith’ and stay in school, who deserve the credit. In terms of their advice to young people, Erick put it like this: “If you want success, you have to study hard.” Jose, on the other hand, touts the Power of a Higher Power, saying, “No matter what comes along, even with all the difficulties (you face), put your trust in Jesus, and in his guidance.” We move into the Belize District and one of its representatives there, Ladyville Technical High School on the Phillip Goldson Highway. The school, according to its Principal Ms. Diane Wesby, will be graduating 72 out of 80 students on Saturday, June 7th, 2014 at the Best Western-Belize Biltmore Hotel on the Phillip Goldson Highway in Belize City, starting at 3:00 p.m. Leading their ranks will be Valedictorian Ms. Dawn Montero and Salutatorian Ms. Ina Reyes. 2014 PUP Leader condemns Mark King’s Callous statement May 23, 2014 The People’s United Party condemns in the strongest possible terms the ignorant and arrogant comments of Minister of State Hon. Mark King which were reported on last evening’s newscasts. These comments describe a patronage system of spoils in which the UDP are ranked 1st, the Belizean people 2nd, and the PUP 3rd. Regrettably, these comments are consistent with the words and actions of the entire UDP Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Dean Barrow. In 2014, the PUP recognize and understand that there must be a NEW STANDARD which requires that all Belizeans, regardless of political persuasion, be treated fairly, respectfully, and equitably. The Political Party is not the Government and the Government is not the Political Party and it is imperative that distinct lines of separation be in place. We call on PM Barrow to apologize to the Nation for his Minister’s callous remarks, join us in condemning those remarks, and to remove this arrogance and ignorance from his Cabinet.

Another Pharmacy SCANDAL George Gough’s connection to four (4) Belize Pharmacies Dean Barrow’s hand-picked man for the NHI is George Gough, a former UDP standard bearer. Over the past few weeks the bombshell revelation of widespread corruption in the Ministry of Health has brought the Minister and his CEO under blazing fire and public condemnation. George Gough, a man who collects thousands of dollars to chair the NHI also sits as chair of the pharmaceutical tendering committee. So he decides who gets to bring in all the medical drugs and supplies into Belize. There are four pharmacies that have come under suspicion by the various medical associations (1) Buttonwood Bay Pharmacy, (2) Brown Sugar Pharmacy, (3) Ladyville Pharmacy, and (4) Cross Road (Freetown) Pharmacy. Now, not a single Belizean believes that health CEO Peter Allen would attempt to investigate the connection that George Goff has to these
