THE BELIZE TIMES

Reid Alms for the Greedy By G. Michael Reid “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.” The meaning of the proverb is that it is better to teach people to take care of themselves rather than take care of people. ~ anon There is something inherently wrong about what happened in Belize on Mothers’ Day 2014. Inherently wrong because it would be wrong regardless of which political party chose to engage in that type of partisan political patronage. It was into public funds that the Prime Minister went to withdraw and distribute $850,000 to give to his 17 area representatives. Seventeen means that dishonorable Elvin Penner was among those who received $50,000 to give out to their party loyalists. According to a Channel Five news story, “This wasn’t party money drawn from the coffers of the U.D.P. or from the pockets of the area reps. The eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars came out of public funds, given to them by the Ministry of Finance.” The biggest problem here is that what Dean Barrow is doing sets a dangerous precedent. If the United Democratic Party is allowed to use public funds to patronize and reward its supporters with no objections raised, then any subsequent administration will feel justified in doing the same. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. I speak specifically to master hypocrite Godwin Hulse who vehemently object-

The ones most heavily taxed and the ones least likely to benefit from any tax relief are those identified as belonging to the opposition. It is obvious then that while members of the opposition carry the heaviest tax burden, they are not even considered for any such programs or giveaways. It makes no difference to politicians that this type of “handout gutter politics” does in no way help to move our nation forward. It promotes a beggar mentality and makes work-shy loafers out of otherwise potentially productive citizens. While constructive selfhelp programs would much better fill the needs of alms seekers, such programs would obviously not serve to massage the egos of politicians and would not forward their agenda of keeping the people in perpetual subjugation. There are those who have suggested that it was the PUP who started this whole handout business with the Wednesday Clinic phenomenon. Wednesday Clinics were initially set up to allow voters’ access to their representatives and to allow these representatives to interact and to listen to their constituents. Many people have legitimate concerns but those people are now sent to Bel-
