Threaten To Strike Belize City, September 8, 2015 Negotiations between the Belize Energy Worker’s Union (BEWU) and the Government-owned Belize Electricity Limited for a just wage increase for the workers have hit a wall, forcing the union representatives to threaten to take serious industrial action if their request is not taken seriously.

The BEWU has been extremely patient and understanding. Their request for an increase commenced about ten months ago. The Government, on the other hand, has been stalling and stiff. The Government

has nurtured an environment conducive to problems.

The BEL employees have demanded an 8% salary increase to be spread over four years. It’s a small increase considering that the original request for 48%, but thanks to BEL’s meanness, was eventually reduced.

Additionally, in its 2014-2015 Financial Year Report, BEL boasted profits of $36 million. The senior managers have been enjoying all sorts of benefits and perks, while the regular employees are yet to see a raise.

SEDI’S LOVE NOTE to Guatemala, NOT PROTEST NOTE! Belize City, September 7, 2015 Senator Lisa Shoman has fully exposed the Barrow Administration’s continued pathetic defense of Belize’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, in the face of open aggression from Guatemala.

Following the August 16th clash between over 150 BTV supporters and Guatemala’s military during an expedition to the Sarstoon Island in Belizean territory, Prime Minister Dean Barrow, in an attempt to save face, held a prime ministerial press conference, to announce that his Government had prepared sent off a “strong” Protest Note to the then Otto Perez Molina-led Government.

When asked by Krem’s Marisol Amaya to disclose the specific tone and content of the protest note, Barrow turned red in the face and treated the question like an insult, suggesting that Ms. Amaya was confused. Well, we now know why Barrow scowled at the media. It is because the note sent by his Minister of Foreign Affairs Sedi Elrington to Guatemala was a love/apology note, and definitely not a protest note.

area, described the Government’s socalled “protest note” as a “whap” on Belizeans.

She explained that the note sorely lacked the tough language needed to let Guatemala know that the Government of Belize condemned, and would not stand for their violation of Belize’s sovereign territory.

“What it says is that, yes, the Guatemalan vessels rammed Belizean civilians and obstructed free navigation and entered illegally into Belizean waters, and that it re-affirms its position as to the Anglo-Guatemalan treaty, and that at such time as this thing is settled in the ICJ, that the Government of Belize will stick to the confidence building measures, and will not do anything that will cause incidents on the ground, and that it will agree to exercise caution, and restraint. It does not say, ‘You all went there, to do wrong, illegally, and you better not do it again, or we will deal with you all diplomatically or otherwise.’ Granted, that may not be precise diplomatic language, but certainly, we would have wanted to have seen the kind of language in this protest note,” Senator Shoman remarked.

members, the Minister of Labour Godwin Hulse intervened. The matter was taken to arbitration in which the Labour Commissioner Ivan Williams was the negotiator. Williams had, around the same time, also launched an unsuccessful political campaign to become the UDP’s standard bearer in Stann Creek West.

Neither Hulse’s nor Williams’ intervention has made much a difference.

Could this be because both are representing the Government’s political interest instead of the workers’?

As a result of the stalling, the BEWU has written a stern letter, dated

expedition to the Sarstoon area, highlighting that it was done without the approval, encouragement or involvement of the Government of Belize. The note even emphasized that to discourage the journey and to show that they were not a party to it they withheld the nation’s security arms, the Belize Defense Force and Coast Guard, from carrying out their sworn oaths of protecting and defend the country and Belizeans.

What Senator Shoman revealed in the meeting of the Upper House last week is perhaps one of the gravest and most disconcerting signs of conciliations from our Government of Belize on the Guatemalan issue. While our brave patriots put their lives at risk to defend Belize’s sovereignty, the Government bends over to satisfy Guatemala.

Despite knowing the severity of the issue and the high public interest on the Guatemalan issue, Prime Minister Barrow has also refused to say that the Guatemalan Government has responded to the Government’s love/apology note, and that they did so using a strong, scolding tone, according to Senator Shoman.

She explained, “…they basically said, ‘We hear everything that you say in your note, we rejected it totally, and completely. We blame you for what happened because you are the one who allowed this organization that was organized, and Senator Lisa Shoman to go. We blame you for that, and moreover, don’t come and tell us anything about the Sarstoon, because, in precise diplomatic language, we do not recognize the existence of borders with Belize. That was Guatemala’s response. We do not recognize the existence of borders with Belize.”

2015 September 3rd, to Minister Hulse which warns that the “Union membership is of the general opinion that the BEWU will have to take industrial action leading up to a general strike in order for our demands to be met by an inflexible, inconsiderate and disrespectful employer”.

The letter effectively puts the company and the Government on notice that the Union’s and BEL workers’ patience is running thin.

If the Barrow Administration would roll out the red carpet for Belizeans the way they do for rich foreign multi-national companies, like ASR and Fortis, our workers would not meet such heavy resistance as they lobby and fight for just wages.

But the UDP Government is not one who cares for the Belizean workers, and must be ready to take necessary steps to achieve their objectives.

The statements by Guatemala, as shared by Senator Shoman, reveals that our neighbours have become more forceful in their claim of Belize’s territory and, in particular, their assertion of not only rights, but control over the Sarstoon Island and Sarstoon River.

The UDP Government’s behindclosed-doors coward responses to Guatemala’s hostile acts and disrespect of Belize’s sovereignty are affronts to Belizeans who are preparing to celebrate Belize’s 34th anniversary Independence on September 21st.

With this Government, under Dean Barrow and Sedi Elrington, Belize has given up the Sarstoon. Will we allow them to give up more?

Rat bites Newborn

at Western Regional Hospital Why is Health Minister Pablo Marin silent!

City of Belmopan, September 7, 2015 A newborn baby was attacked and bitten by a vicious rat, while inside an incubator at the Government-run Western Regional Hospital, on Friday September 4th 2015. This most recent display of negligence and incompetence by health authorities has angered the public and, once more, cast a heavy shadow of distrust.

The baby was resting inside the incubator when the rat attacked and began chewing on the child’s toe.

Had the baby not cried out in pain and anguish, no one would have known what was taking place.

There are several theories about how the rat got into the incubator, from the strange belief that it squeezed itself through the oxygen tubes, but the real question is how hospital authorities could allow a disease-ridden rat to enter and contaminate one of the most sterile and safe places throughout the institution: the baby unit of the maternity ward?

It is very clear that incompetence

and lack of due diligence has led to a serious rodent problem at the Western Regional Hospital.

What makes this matter more outrageous is that in April it was discovered that rodents had infested the same hospital’s pantry room. Officials discovered rodents and their faeces all over what was supposed to be safe food for patients.

Officials also admitted that the food had been provided to patients for months and expressed relief that no one had become

infected or worse, died.

Hospital officials admitted that they had a serious problem then. They knew rats were running in and out of the hospital through the cracked walls, the unfastened doors, old windows and even the unsafe vents. They promised to take proper action and control.

Now five months later, the worst kind of incidence takes

03 3 place. An innocent baby’s life was put at direct risk.

It is sickening to hear the repeated excuses coming from hospital authorities. They blame everything but themselves and their poor duty of care.

“It is unfortunate that this situation happened and we regret that it had happened to this child. We hope that it would never happen again. We realised that it may have come in through the vent for the AC outlet. We have taken all measures to correct that issue and we have been conducting measures in which to minimize the rodent population here,” said the hospital’s administrator Bernadette Seaver.

The Minister of Health Pablo Marin has not said a word over the situation. He has not called for an investigation to see where things went wrong. He has not called on an independent team to make recommendations on how to properly correct the situation.

His overall responsibility is to ensure that hospitals are safe for patients. His responsibility is to convince his Cabinet colleagues to invest resources such as Petrocaribe funds in proper for hospitals, instead of tacos Mother’s Day cheer and sprees along the Corozal bay.

His misguided leadership may stem on the fact that Marin is no health expert. Under his watch, our hospitals fall apart and instead of healing the poor, have become death traps for babies and young mothers.

His record is one praised by Prime Minister Dean Barrow, who has endorsed the Minister for being competent “where it matters” to him.

GUATEMALA’S ALLY

elize’s great leader, indeed its greatest leader, George Price was uncomfortable with the information about the “Battle of St. George’s Caye”.

Making allowance for the source of the information and the facts surrounding it, Mr. Price is reported to have referred to the “battle”

as a myth.

Such a bold and revolutionary statement would not have gone down well with the British Governor nor his Loyal and Patriotic Order of the Baymen, L.P.O.B. supporters. This group made up of loyal and unquestioning lovers of the British formed the core of the political party that was the Honduras Party and then the National Independence Party (N.I.P.), which in early 1970s became the United Democratic Party.

The leaders of these parties marched during the 10th September parades with the British flag, called the Union Jack, at the front of their annual parades. The parades would pass the Governor’s House on Regent Street, where the Governor and other British dignitaries would come by the gate and receive a note of loyalty and well wishes to the Governor and the King, or Queen of Britain.

By contrast, the People’s United Party, designed their own flag, abolished any British flags from their parades and events and made it a significant point to keep the Governor and all things British away from them and their legions of followers.

Back in the 1950s, when Phillip Goldson and Leigh Richardson were part of the leadership of the P.U.P. they were targeted by the British, arrested for writing a mild article in a newspaper and sentenced to jail with hard-labor.

A similar fate was planned for George Price. The British alleged he made disrespectful remarks about the Queen at a public meeting. He was arrested and tried in the Supreme Court but a jury found him not guilty.

Prior to that eventful trial, on being elected to the then Town Council in Belize City, Mr. Price removed the picture of the Queen from the City Hall building. This not only outraged the British Governor, but also the British loving “sons of the Baymen,” L.P.O.B and the followers of the N.I.P. Our long years of struggle against British rule in Belize and for independence, Mr. Price and the other leaders and supporters of the PUP made in their glorious cause to get rid of the British masters and place the destiny of Belize in the hands of Belizeans.

By contrast the N.I.P and UDP made no secret of their love and support of the British. As late as the morning of the 21 September 1981, the Leaders of the UDP were crying gloom and doom at the leaving of the British.

Dean Barrow, like Wilfred Elrington is the proud inheritor of the pro-British love and loyalty. Upon winning their first general election in 1984, their UDP Prime Minister removed the office of the Prime Minister, where George Price for decades used upstairs of the Treasury for his famous “Wednesday Clinics”.

Mr. Price was among only seven leaders in the world who set

aside a full day to meet anyone from anywhere in the country who thought the only way to get government help, after all else had failed, was to see the leader of the country. Rich and poor, high and low attended the famous Wednesday Clinics where they were astonished to meet a humble and helping servant of the people.

His personal motto, now enshrined in the Constitution of the PUP is “Serve the People”.

The UDPs first prime Minister, unable to suddenly abolish the popular Wednesday clinics, removed the office to the Governor’s residence at Regent Street. There, people were met on Wednesday by burly police inquiring what business brought them to see the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Barrow, since 2008 has not held a single Wednesday clinic. He has no interest in meeting the humble people of Belize who are the very victims of his government’s victimization. We can understand why he holds no clinic. A few of his Ministers do so but only invited UDP supporters who can attend. Their clinics are about UDP party matters and have nothing to do with the Ministerial portfolios of serving the people.

Imagine, Housing Minister Finnegan trying to explain why he has not built any house for the past three years. Or Health Minister Pablo Marin explaining to the mothers why their thirteen babies died in a hospital and rats are biting others in another hospital.

We mention the lack of a Wednesday Clinics on the Prime Minister’s calendar, as well as his party’s love affairs with the British because the question now needs to be asked. Where exactly is Mr. Barrow’s loyalty?

We know his over-arching ambition is to win a third term as Prime Minister. We know he has no illusion that he is not well loved across the length and breadth of this country. We know also that his election strategy will be based entirely on bribing a section of the voters, in numbers he considers necessary to tip the voting balance in his favor. It works for him in his constituency and it will work for him across the rest of constituencies.

Or so he believes.

We raise these issues because they confirm that we have a Prime Minister who is without any moral anchor or principles by which he leads our country. He can march the British flag while claiming to be a nationalist. He victimizes large sections of the population and makes life harder for poor people while announcing he is “pro-poor”. He has cursed the territorial volunteers and denies them proper security while he stands at a press conference and says they are patriots.

And now he claims he has sent an extremely strong protest to Guatemala while he allows them to take control and exercise sovereignty over the whole Sarstoon River.

As Belize gets ready to celebrate 34 years of being an independent nation; the poor quality of leadership of Mr. Barrow is emerging as a threat to our national survival because Guatemala has found themselves an ally.

Dean Barrow has met the real enemy and it is him.

Maya Mopan residents win 1st Round

City of Belmopan, September 8, 2015 A sinister and callous move by UDP functionaries to tear down the humble homes occupied by residents of a neighbourhood in the nation’s capital has been blocked by the Supreme Court of Belize.

On Friday, September 4th, attorney Michel Chebat took the plight of the over 100 residents to the Supreme Court, seeking an injunction to halt the UDP Mayor, Khalid Belisle, and officials from Recondev, a development arm of the UDP Government, from executing an open threat to destroy the homes belonging to over 30 families living in an area of Maya Mopan within the next two weeks.

As reported extensively in last week’s issue of the BELIZE TIMES, the families live in fear daily that the actions of the UDP Belmopan City Council and Recondev will leave them homeless.

Several families have been living and raising their families on the land for decades. Over time, they cleared the land and built homes.

The laws of Belize recognise this kind of legal occupation as squatter’s rights. The Government has the power, under the law, to remove people from their lands, but compensation is compulsory.

Mayor Belisle and Recondev seem to care less about the rights of the individuals living on the land, or what the supreme law of the land requires. They have already destroyed four homes, and offered no compensation. This heartless action was done without proper notice nor warning. When the families arrived in the area, they found their small wooden homes flattened. The other families were told that they had two weeks to move or they would be next. Cold and chancey!

Senator Patrick Andrews, PUP Standard Bearer for Belmopan, became deeply concerned with the manner the matter was handled and the way the families were treated. He met with the families, and upon recognising the need for legal support, he reached out to attorney Michel Chebat.

WHO IS THE PIG? Last week the House of Representatives met in Belmopan in what many believe was one of the last House sittings before general elections. All indications are that probably elections will come before the end of this year.

We are entering what pundits in the Commonwealth Caribbean call the Silly Season, and it is clear that both sides, as well as the smaller parties, are gearing up.

It was obvious at the House meeting that the Member for Queen’s Square was not having a good day where his back is concerned. Of course when he was on his feet attacking all and sundry and casting numerous personal aspersions at his perceived opponents, whatever pain seemed

to disappear altogether. And I can tell you that this past time he outdid himself with nastiness, his Speaker of the House not once admonishing him for crossing the line.

Belizeans are collectively still shaking our heads, if not in disbelief, then certainly in disgust that the leader of our country once more displayed all his pettiness and wicked and unacceptable misconduct for everyone to see and hear.

We in the Opposition were in fighting form, and there were various strong interventions on the debates as well as on the adjournment. The government side seemed to have been extremely disturbed when I brought out that nationalization must not be just a word, but it must have real mean-

ing and must benefit the Belizean people, especially our poorer citizens. They howled when I referred to the fact that many lampposts have been placed in one area of Lord’s Bank, but that most people do not yet have their electricity, as they are unable to meet the prohibitive cost of transformers, weatherheads and other installations.

The member for Mesopotamia was so affected that he jumped up to attack me personally, instead of addressing the issues, and to predict that I will lose at the upcoming elections. He called me dishonest, even though he and others know fully well that I was speaking the truth. Thank goodness he has nothing to do with deciding if I will retain my seat. It is the good people of Belize Rural Central, and they alone, who will decide, not any crystal-ball wielding detractor or UDP member or fanatic.

Of course the new low in the House came when the Member for Queen’s Square pulled himself to his feet after the whopping that the Member for Cayo South put on him during the debate on the Fortis Settlement Act, exposing plainly the motives and cynicism involved.

The Prime Minister once again seemed not able to help himself.

07 7 He began personally attacking Hon. Julius, calling him a pig!! He seemed to like it, and since the Speaker did not bat an eyelid, he repeated the insult no fewer than ten times. And, I repeat, this from the individual whose conduct as leader of our country should be exemplary.

Again, during the sitting, he outdid himself in ill behavior. After the Leader of the Opposition brought to the forefront the whole Sarstoon River issue and government’s abject failure, the PM hauled himself up once more. He paused briefly. Then he launched into the most petty, personal, ad hominem attack on Hon. Francis that I have witnessed to date.

He never even attempted to defend himself or his government or to speak on the issue.

He just spewed naked hatred and nasty repugnance, veritably wallowing in the self-created mudhole of his overflowing vitriol, extreme bitterness, and unbelievable, but now expected, malice.

Perhaps he thinks, as usual, that he has gotten away with it. But we have news for him, and that news is that the Belizean people are watching and listening.

Canada eliminates Belize from World Cup qualifiers Belmopan, September 8, 2015 Canada eliminated the Belize Jaguars from advancing to the 4th round of the qualifiers to the World Cup Russia 2018, by a 4-1 aggregate score, after a 1-1 draw at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan on Tuesday night.

Deon McCaulay delighted home fans when he struck the Jaguars’ 1st goal in the 26th minute, but Canada’s William Johnson equalized the score 1-1 just before the half.

The Jaguars pressed for more goals as Coach Jorge Nunez introduced Jarret Davis, Devon Makin and Evan Mariano to strengthen the Jaguars’ attacks, replacing An-

dres Makin, Harrison Roches and Elroy Kuylen but Canada’s goalie Milan Borjan avoided giving another goal.

Belize’s veteran goalie Shane Moody Orio made a great save in the final minutes to avoid giving Canada a 2-1 win, it remained a 1-1 draw at the long whistle.

SSB Chairman mis-speaks against SSB staff

Wednesday, September 2, 2015 Christian Workers Union in conjunction and in solidarity with its Members from the Social Security Board (SSB) denounces the recent conduct of the SSB Chairman, Doug Singh, who seems intent in raising public sentiments against the workers and providing misleading and inaccurate information. These comments come just after the Negotiating Team of SSB at its first negotiating session tabled the request that there be a complete media blackout regarding the proposals, counter-proposals and discussions during negotiations of the Collective Bargaining Agreement presently being negotiated. CWU from its part has refrained from discussing the CBA and all surrounding and relevant matters in this regard and thus finds the conduct of the Chairman to be in total bad-faith and contrary to the spirit of good faith negotiations.

CWU rejects the comments made by the Chairman and considers them to be disingenuous and prejudicial to the good working relationship anticipated by the CWU, during negotiations and beyond.

We therefore seek to correct the following: 1. Chairman Singh said: “I will say here now and I think I am doing so in the best interest of negotiations, the Board was presented at its last meeting with a proposal for an increase in pension or pension benefits under the employee pension program and it’s substantial. My calculation it’s about 16%. The Board had set a signal clearly at the end of that meeting that it won’t even consider that until it is first able to consider pension increase to pension-

ers.”

It is totally not true that the CBA seeks an increase in pension for employees. There is a staff Pension Scheme operated by Social Security Board, under its own legal documents not addressed in the CBA. Both Staff and SSB contribute to this Pension Scheme, which is managed by a Board of Trustees and it is this Board, which has nothing to do with the CBA, CWU or these negotiations that has recommended that the Social Security Board of Directors consider a raise to the existing only four (4) Pensioners under that Staff Pension Scheme. SSB is the Settler in this Scheme. However, it is not a 16 % raise as insinuated by the Chairman. Any increase if and when it is considered by the Board of Directors of SSB will be an increase to those retired SSB Staff/Pensioners and is in no way connected to the present negotiations.

2. Chairman Singh said: “Ultimately, the Social Security Fund are for the people who contribute… Not for administration bloats. And so whatever the staff get [sic], will be a function of what the Board can recommend for pensioners out there.”

The Chairman failed to disclose to the media that the Board of Directors of the Social Security Board has approved and received for themselves in excess of a 150% increase on their allowances since their tenure. Also, it has failed to indicate that staff benefits have never been tied to SSB pensioner’s benefits.

3. Chairman Singh said: “The staff is there at the mercy of structure and ulti-

mately we have to set priority where priority is supposed to be and we are going to look at pension benefits for pensioners and we are going to give that priority above any increases under the collective bargaining agreement.”

The Social Security Act, Chapter 44, Laws of Belize does not allow the Board of Directors of SSB to act unilaterally in the consideration of any increase to SSB Pensioners; that is a direct function of the Minister of Finance and so to join the two issues for consideration indicates the commitment of the Board of Directors to play games with the CBA and to subvert the negotiation process.

4. Chairman Singh said: “Many of the benefits enjoyed by Social Security employees are benefits enjoyed under the public system, such as 4-5 weeks’ vacation, vacation grants and things like that - that are enjoyed in the public system where salaries are generally lower.

In Social Security, the salaries are generally higher than in the public system. Yet they enjoy the same benefits.”

Social Security Board employs professionals who were in different capacity employed within the Public Service.

A recent review of the current salaries alongside those of their colleagues who remain in the Public Service clearly reflects that SSB staffers are currently on par and even below remuneration within the Public Service, subsequent to the recent raise afforded by the Public Service.

It is indeed unconscionable that there has not been a raise for Pension-

ers since 2002 but that cannot be an indictment on the Staff of SSB and falls squarely under the purview of the SSB Board of Directors and the Minister of Government responsible for SSB. It must be noted that, except for a few seats on the Board, those who have the majority and set the tone of the SSB agenda are politically appointed and change and vary with each new government administration. Further, if anything should be questioned it is the investment portfolio of SSB monies that should be carefully invested to seek maximum returns to ensure increase in funds for the SSB Scheme, which is mandatory for all persons employed to contribute to as per Belizean law. The legislation determines the process for consideration of such a raise and it is not a process designated to the Staff of SSB. The Board must do its work in a timely fashion and not now initiate delay tactics and create red-herrings to keep the Staff “at the mercy of structure” [per the word of the Chairman] as steered by the Board of Directors, who set the policies and mandate for the management of the SSB. We are disappointed at the Chairman’s uncalled for comments, which seem to have been done more with a view to cause negative perception on the Staff of SSB and incite public sentiments against them, instead of setting the tone of confidence in the management of SSB and gratitude for the continued hard work of the Staff.

By G. Michael Reid The circus was in town again last week and as per usual, the antics of the clowns overshadowed the seriousness of the acts. As is customary, the show was broadcast live and from what I could hear, it seems that apart from the usual ensemble, they brought a jackass, some fools and even a pig. No word if the members brought food this time but a few sessions back, one guy even brought his bukut. There is never a dull moment with this circus.

Fun and joke aside, these politicians have totally disgraced this so-called honorable House. The language is unparliamentary, behavior unbecoming and decorum is sorely lacking. We must demand more from those who represent us. If we were to hire a lawyer to go to court and they were to carry on this way, we would surely fire them forthwith; why do we tolerate such boorishness from the members of our parliament?

The reason for the last week’s House Meeting was two-fold. The first was to pass the Electricity Acquisition Settlement Act which in effect, gives back to Fortis, half of the 70% shares that were expropriated n June of 2011. Fortis will also be paid a hefty sum of seventy million dollars for half of the number of shares that back in 1999, they paid a mere 35 million. Interestingly enough, the other reason for the meeting was to approve two separate loans from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) respectively. The first loan, labeled the CDB Belize Education Sector Reform Program II Loan Motion 2015 is for, get this, seventy million dollars. The exact amount needed to pay Fortis. Coincidence… .I think not!

At the end of the day, light bills remain the highest in the region and the number of people without electricity grows exponentially day by day; but we own the company! For their part, Fortis will get a third of all profits raked in by BEL and by rough estimates, despite the company being owned exclusively by government over the past four years, these profits have quadrupled.

They also have enough members on the board to veto any proposal made by government. Make no mistake, Fortis remains very much in control of BEL and while on paper they might have less shares than before, they have less responsibility and very little overhead expenses. Stan Marshall is still having the last laugh and is laughing that laugh all the way to the bank!

With all that he had to say, Mr. Barrow is yet to answer a very pertinent question. How much money did the government of Belize have to pay Denys Barrow, the Prime Minister’s own brother, for service rendered during those four years? Why could we not have used the services of the

BEL Nationalization – Who Benefits?

Some villages in Belize Rural North can’t say anything good about BEL under this oppressive government.

Old Rock Stone Pond is still without Electricity. Bomba is still without electricity. Maypen is still without electricity. Rhaburn Ridge is still waiting for electrical power.

From a grassroots position, the services of BEL have not improved. In Sandhill Village, we experienced more outages than ever before.

All across Belize Rural North, poor people still have to pay for poles and Transformers. Poor Miss Fermin in St Paul’s Bank was told she must find around $35,000.00 to get hooked up to the grid which stops about half-mile from her house. Miss Martinez in Rock Stone Pond No.1 is still burning candles.

Her husband died not enjoying electricity and as a single parent, she must find $12,000.00 to get connected to the system. In 2015, Maypen students must still use candles to study and hot iron on the stove to iron their uniforms.

Shame on you BEL, Nothing changed under nationalization.

“This is unjust. The police were here along with people from the city council telling us we must leave or they will destroy our homes. I fear my family’s home will be next and we will be homeless,” he said.

Reports are that the UDP are not too happy with the Court’s just decision.

Mayor Belisle, whom the residents say had promised that he would survey the land for them if they vote for him as Mayor, has still not showed up to face the residents.

Remembrance for Ms. Gwendolyn Gentle Saturday, September 5th 2015 As friends and family members come together, to show our love and support in paying our respect to Ms. Gwendolyn Gentle (Ms. Gwenie), I am reminded of a verse from the book of 2 Corinthians Chapter 9:15, which clearly reminds and outlines what a precious gift could and ought to be.

Thanks be to God, for his unspeakable gift, or as the bible amplifies it – thanks be to God for his precious gift beyond telling (his indescribably and inexpressible free gift). That verse has helped to describe Gwendolyn Gentle.

A true gift given to us present today.

I knew Ms. Gwenie at a very early stage of my life, when I used to tag along with my late grandmother or was sent to pick up johnny cakes, powder bun or creole bread at the house of Ms. Gwenie’s special friend, Ms. Doris. There was where I met her on several occasions. She immediately left an impact on me because I saw so many similar things between her and my own late mother.

Ms. Gwenie struggled for her family as a single parent but yet remained committed to them. Even though she was not a person of many words, when she spoke, it was always to kindness and always showing care and love. Lo and behold, I grew up to be a man, got

involved in PUP electoral politics, ran for office in the Mesopotamia area, and that was when I discovered another characteristic of Ms. Gwenie, as she became one of my most trusted, loyal and committed campaigners. She never faltered in her belief in me or her great People’s United Party.

I am sure, judging from all our presence here today, she also impacted on many of our lives as well.

On behalf of the PUP and family, and our Party Leader Hon. Francis Fonseca, I say thanks to her immediate family, for loaning her to us. Let us all be drawn closer in her memory of caring and sharing, as we continue to serve others. Farwell Ms. Gwenie.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOOK

By Valentino Shal Adapted from Facebook post September 4, 2015 at 2:49pm You always hear people presenting the cliché “think outside the box” and I’ve come to the conclusion that artists do this much better than the rest of us.

We do need to think outside the box but I also think that it is more than just trying to do things differently.

When we say we are trying to think outside the box this generally means a continuation of what we have already been doing with only slight modifications. What art and artists bring allow a more violent confrontation in our thoughts. Every now and again we need something external that will go right against the grain of our everyday thinking in a not-so-gentle way.

Our friends at the Image Factory today released a “book” called BINOMIUM. Now I put book in quotes because it is not really a book though it looks like a book and feels like a book. Joan Duran in his introduction said we should think of reading it like a religious text. Even at this slight suggestion, I wouldn’t be surprised at the extreme conservative taking offense.

You know religious books are read in verses, chapters and parts. You don’t read a religious text like a novel. You take it in sips.

After the short introduction ceremony I went through a copy of the “book” thinking it was a book and approaching it with that frame of mind. Going through the pages of photographs, text and art work by Michael Gordon I finally figured out what Joan Duran meant by reading it like a religious text.

While it is presented as a book it is absolutely disconnected. The joyful, soulful, jarring and irreverent images and texts have nothing really in common except that it forces you to exert mental effort to decipher what you are looking at.

Psychologically, because our brain can’t process the volume of information that blasts us every day, it creates what we call schema which allows for information to be easily be filed and referenced. We absorb only a bit of the information and our brain completes it for us.

By the way this is why people see images of saints on their tortillas.

The human brain is hardwired to recognize the human face. This is what happened to me when I thought they were presenting a book. It’s not a book. But it looks like a book. In my mind a book has logical flow. It has chapters that you

can read from beginning to end. It is nothing like that. It is a work of art and UNESCO is right to endorse it.

Every now and again it is important that we go through a jarring experience or the coarse application of reality to our brain like sandpaper on a piece of wood. These episodes shock us out of our everyday hum as we often get carried away by the status quo. We hardly ever stop to think. Some of us call this shock and mental space, reflection. It is certainly reflection however, reflection can only occur when your standard and conventional thought process is arrested and forced to think about thinking. I feel that the more often we experience this, the greater it is for our personal well-being because we will not allow ourselves to be lulled and led unquestioningly in all aspects of our lives.

This is the power of art and artists. They allow us to peer over the edge, think outside the book and judge our thoughts mercilessly in a fun and rewarding way.

From this perspective BINOMIUM has achieved its mission.

GANGSTER GOVERNMENT We fail to understand how our highest law, the Constitution was changed to allow the government to specifically take away and keep the BTL and BEL “for the people of Belize” and then the government give back one third of our BEL. We fail to understand it.

Some think it is unconstitutional.

We think it is worse than that. We think it is akin to a rogue government.

This is a gangster government at work.

This is Shock Doctrine at work, as explained by the writer Naomi Klien. While the nation is worried over Guatemalan aggression and the capture of the Sarstoon River, the government springs this completely unacceptable piece of hoodlum tactic.

Hey, honey! It not 3 percent. It is 33 percent plus 70 million dollars! Plus legal fees to the brother of the Prime Minister, while there is a Solicitor General and eight lawyers paid for by the taxpayers.

Recall that shortly after becoming government the Prime Minister appointed Godwin Hulse to advise him on the Lottery and Boledo. The usual lapdog promptly recommended that the boledo and lottery be taken away from the government and given over to private individuals.

Guess who got the multi-million dollars Boledo and lottery? A certain Brads, UDP supporter at whose shop, the Prime Minister and several Ministers hang out regularly. Rumors say a close relative of the Prime Minister is a silent co-owner. The Prime Minister has not dispelled the concern.

Boledo and Lottery rakes in eleven million dollars each year.

It was a form of highway robbery.

Legalized theft. Stealing a whole government program and enriching cronies.

Then there was an opportunity to do a wonderful thing by putting power in the hands of the cane farmers. The government refused to help the cañeros and instead allowed ASR, and American company to buy the cane factory and cane industry. Cañeros and their children have been condemned to live and die as peasant and farmers. Never to be owners of their industry.

Then Norwegian Cruise line came along. They were given a whole island with its surrounding coral formations and a lifetime concession that only they can do cruise tourism in the south of Belize. In addition they would pay a tax on each tourist arriving on their ships and - check this out - the government will give back the company half of the taxes.

No government can give back half of the taxes to a foreign company.

The people’s taxes are sacred. But a gangster government can do anything they want.

Thank you Prime Minister, for showing what a moral and upright champion of the people you are.

Can we humbly ask? Are you working on a deal with the real owners of BTL? Will they get 45 percent of the company and 150 million dollars as an extra ex gratia? And will you, true to form, be bypassing the government

RAPE AT HOSPITAL This disgusting news highlights what a slack, negligent and uncaring government we have.

A man goes public on television to tell the nation that malpractice at the KHMH has caused him to be paralyzed from the waist down. He says that because he publicly exposed what happened to him, he was thrown one side in the hospital ward- getting his food late and other spiteful treatment.

Then another nightmare. Someone was trying to sodomize him in his bed at the hospital. Had he not screamed for help and the other patients rushed to his rescue he would have received a bukut.

He says there is no security at the hospital ward.

In the name of God, what is going on with the government? There is not a word from the Minister of -Health.

Nothing from his once talkative, knowall CEO. Then this week Plus TV dropped another bombshell. It confirmed that a male patient raped an elderly female patient at the mental hospital in Belmopan.

Where were the staff, the overseers, the security? The elderly female could have been killed. Mental patients must always be under some observation.

What the heck is going on with this government?

Well, last week we were treated to the harsh reality of how our system treats talented young people.

He hauled in the dead body of Bobo Youth, whose real name is Theodore Parchue.

Parchue had fallen on hard times.

Real hard times. NICH, with a million dollar budget, and very high paid profilers does not have the time for such artists. They invest in foreigners and support importing artists. So young talents like Parchue cannot earn a stipend to buy bread and build a home.

Parchue, an epileptic, ended up homeless and penny-less.

What does the foreign-sounding American-accent director of NICH cares?

Parchue ended up sleeping under Belcan Bridge. This is how our young people are forced to go in this city which has no pity.

How could such a talented young man be completely ignored and thrown away?

How could so many of our young people graduate from college? Sixth form, University and cannot find a job?

Why are so many retired persons and foreigners getting jobs while our young people are forced into idleness and poverty?

We mourn the loss of Bobo Youth.

Our condolences to his family.

We condemn the hypocrites and Pharisees who are wasting precious public funds and playing politics while our young generation is being robbed of their youth and their future.

Surely, a day of reckoning must come.

Mr. Selgado attended the University of the West Indies and after the usual long five years returned to Belize with a law degree and the CLE to become a qualified attorney.

His dream is to serve as a Magistrate, if only for a couple of years.

For some unexplained reason, the gentleman has become the victim of petty malice. He has repeatedly applied to the authorities and repeatedly denied.

Not once has he been offered an explanation.

It should be noted that for the past several months the situation in the Magistrate Courts has reached crisis proportions. It has never been this bad.

There is no Magistrate in Benque Viejo, none in San Ignacio, and none in Belmopan.

There was no Magistrate in Corozal for several months until the incumbent returned from forced leave.

There is no Magistrate in Orange Walk. A green, inexperienced person

2015 from the Family Court goes once or twice a week. Complaints about her attitude have started.

In Belize City, in the mornings, crowds can be seen moving from one court to another as only two Magistrates are available for seven courts.

So why can’t Mr. Selgado be a Magistrate?

SOCA QUEEN DIS-ED The word “dis” is short hand for disrespect.

Belize’s Soca Queen-Ernestine Carballo flew to Miami to do a performance in the USA. At the immigration she must have been asked the purpose of the visit. She may have replied- performing her songs at a show. Bam! That is entering USA for employment.

Your visa is only to visit. Go back home.

Ernestine wasted her plane ticket and returned disappointed.

For some time the more travelled artists have been complaining how they need some official help to get over this visiting visa problem.

No one cares about local artists going. They too busy dealing with bringing in foreign artists.

NICKI MINAJ Nicki Minaj is the baddest (best) female hip hop artist on the music scene.

Her music video “Anaconda” was crashing the internet with over fourteen million views on its release. It is bold, provocative, scintillating and a bit on the rude side. But it is creative and artistic.

MTV (Music Television) had its annual VMA (Video Music Awards) show last Sunday. These shows are all about style, fashion, bubble head bimbos (as Donald Trump would say), materialism and outright variety of varieties and idiocy.

But, (there is always a butt) they do highlight some of the most outstanding singers and performers.

Nicki was not nominated for her awesome music video of Anaconda.

She took offence. She said so on social media. She made reference to slim, skinny white girls getting nominations. Taylor Swift thought it was her as she got several nominations. She and Nicki had words.

Miley Cyrus, a bubble head with no talent jumped into the argument, making unnecessary remarks about Nicki.

At the live performance Sunday, Nicki and Taylor made up and hugged on stage. But for Miley, Nicki started on her, the producers cut off Nicki’s microphone and switched scenes.

Nicki, who is not a bubble head, and is an intelligent outspoken person, has creole blood in her. She has lashed out against the recent racism against black Americans and spoken on serious social issues.

Now the work begins to ensure that Caribbean Shores gets proper leadership and representation.

PUP Collet Standard Bearer Provides Positive Outlets to Young People Belize City, September 7, 2015 PUP Collet Standard Bearer, Yasmin Shoman, sponsored a talented team of footballers called “Jerusalem FC.” They are participating in the CYDP Peace Cup Tournament 2015.

The team members are residents of the Collet Division, mostly from an area called “Jerusalem.”

The team is comprised of the following players: Gilbert Reyes, Oscar Diaz, Kevin Guardado, Carlos Vanilla, Evyn Ardon, Anthony Ramirez, Keron Willoughby, Ryan Pandy, Tyrique Ciego, Orlando Velasquez, Julio

Alvarez, Kenroy Willoughby, Hallet Conorque, Aaron Gordon and Dennis Sutherland. Their first game was played at MCC on Saturday, September 5th, 2015.

Ms. Shoman has sponsored several sporting events, including the ABS Basketball Tournament, since becoming the Standard Bearer for Collet in November of 2014. She remains committed to encouraging our youths to channel their energies through positive initiatives such as sports and music in order to help keep them off the streets and out of trouble.

Hon. Dolores Sponsors Basketball Marathon in Hattieville Hattieville, Belize District, September 7, 2015 On Saturday September 5th 2015, Hon. Dolores Balderamos Garcia sponsored a high-spirited Youth Basketball Marathon in Hattieville Village. First and Second place teams were awarded cash prizes.

Thanks to the youths and the many villagers who came out to support.

Also, big thanks to Mr. Gilbert Vialdores a.k.a Yankee and Ms. Nicole Baptist who helped organize the event.

Hon. Dolores will continue to support sports in Belize Rural Central.

Planned next will be a tournament for young women.

Malik was a marked man Belize City, August 31, 2015 20 year old Malik Jair Dixon was killed on the night of Saturday August 29th as he headed home on his bicycle on Flamboyant Street in the Lake Independence area of Belize City.

Dixon, who is known to be affiliated to the Mayflower Street area which is the home of the Ghost town Crips, was in the neighbourhood of an opposing gang area, controlled

by PIV - Peace in the Valley.

Dixon was approached by an armed man who fired shots at him, hitting him on the lower back and left side of his body.

Dixon was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, but died from his injuries.

In 2012, Dixon survived a murder attempt on his life.

He was in a vehicle along with Ellis Meighan Jr when a gunman fired at them. Dixon was shot in the lower back but received treatment and bounced right back.
