PUP BRINGS CHEERS Continued from page 1 “The holiday season reinforces my belief in the goodness of our people, it strengthens my confidence in our Belizean families, in the generosity of our neighbours, and in our pastoral call to love your neighbor as yourself.” – Hon. John Briceño, excerpt from Christmas Message 2019 We Belizeans are resilient. Even this third brutally unfair UDP economic recession which criminally abuses our people does not break our true Belizean Christmas spirit. The UDP government has forged a Belize that corruptly works only for the UDP, like it or not. But the indomitable People’s United Party is the party of hope and as we wait for the election call, our Representatives and Standard Bearers are bringing our own PUP Christmas Cheer to all our constituencies. The PUP is for real and John Briceño with the PUP representatives and standard bearers embody that hope and the new reality that will soon soothe Belize into a new prosperity. In the face of escalating crime, Guatemalan attacks on our sovereignty, narcoplanes taking advantage of our radarless skies, less visitors to our shores, a delicate agricultural sector, crumbling recently built overpriced infrastructure, the absence of dignified HealthCare and other UDP administration imposed failures, Belizeans WILL celebrate Christmas. We’ll ignore the government’s recession for a day and tiptoe as we look forward for a new direction and leadership. In their latest updated report on Tuesday December 10, the SIB revealed that for the last two quarters Belize’s GDP has been negative. Our year is divided and measured economically in four quarters of three months each. UDP has mal administered Belize and thus we have produced less and then it becomes a slippery slope. Unemployment grows. Inflation grows. Poverty balloons. Crime escalates. And Christmas could become dreary for the masses. In the March 2019 budget speech, the Prime Minister attempted to pre-empt this recession announcement by blaming the industrialized nations for dragging small nations into recessions. Who dragged us down this one PM? The drought and New River which you failed to address in time? Unhinged infrastructure growth/development which you have lauded as equal to Trump’s Border wall? Gross incompetence and multiple Hot beds of corruption embedded in your administration and led by government ministers? UDP “terminological inexactitudes” abound. Additionally, the PM told the nation in a December 2019 House Meeting that Belize is in no recession. The International Monetary Fund(IMF) had just released their final report on Belize and the term ‘recession’ was not used. BUT, days after that report was released, the SIB revised their third quarterly numbers. Recession has its own Saga. PM, you keep choosing the wrong side of history to the chagrin of normal Belizeans. But, there is a solution to all this plight. The confidence in you Dean Barrow and the UDP is documented as being NEGATIVE. The solution: Ask Johnny Briceño when he wants you to call Elections. That would be the right and honourable thing to do, Sir. But PM, be quick like with the referendum, the country of Belize is depending on your next move as we move into the New Year—lame ducks must flee.
CRIME NEWS Last Thursday night as we went to print there was a fatal shooting in Roaring Creek Village. Timroy Neal, 28, who is well known to police was at Lucky’s Store sometime around 10 p.m. when a gunman walked up to him and shot him about six times. The gunman made sure he was dead before leaving. In 2010 Neal was acquitted of a murder charge.// There was a fatal shooting on Friday December 13, 2019 around 8 p.m. in Hattieville Village. The second fatal shooting within less than 2 weeks. Phillip Roberts, 33, had just finished eating supper and stepped outside to empty the trash where 2 gunmen were waiting for him in the darkness. Roberts was shot several times and succumb while being transported to the K.H.M.H.//
After almost 3 weeks the body of Densmore Bowman, 34, was found on Monday morning, near mile 25 & 26 on the George Price Highway. The body was about 100 yards off the highway. Anonymous text messages to family members had indicated to them that the body was dumped in that vicinity, but no exact location was provided. The family organized a search party and decided to check the area one last time as the mother, Mary Coleman was leaving for the United States that same day. They found some items belonging to Densmore and later came across the badly decomposing body. Coleman told local media that it has brought some closure to her and the family. Densmore was last seen alive on November 30. The body was taken to the Burrell Boom Medical School

HULSE ASSAULT
Godwin Hulse blurts to the media that they were out there by Belmopan’s Magistrate court just because it was a minister’s son that was charged for common assault. He then blames his own UDP administration for allowing rampant incompetence in their fruitless investigations to a prior burglary and past incidents that affected his family. Essentially, he blames the media for not reporting such stories. Just maybe Mr. Hulse, you should be more mannerly given than you represent the government in the Senate first(unelected). At least fake some manners and quit the verbal assault. The Hulse son was being charged with the common assault of his ex. Godwin Hulse went further to call the allowed visits of his grandson “baby sitting of an alleged son.” All in all, in this December 18 interview, Godwin Hulse showed no remorse for the many battered women our society unfortunately have. Godwin seemingly feels that everyone can fake as he did to the Belizean people. Godwin pretended to care about Belize for
where a post mortem was conducted. He was later taken to Crooked Tree for burial.// After 4 days the body of 17-yearold Damion Bregal of Cayo Street, Belmopan was found. The body was found on the Young Gyal road, Teakettle, Cayo.According to a missing person’s report filed Sunday, he left home at around 7 Friday December 13, 2019, night to an unknown destination and never returned. The mother Trecia Sambula spoke with the media on Monday and said she is blaming the police for her son’s disappearance. The next day her son’s body was found.// Late in November we reported on a kidnapping and shooting case. The incident happened on November 26, 2019, where Richard O’Neil was kidnapped, taken to an area on the Boom/Hattieville road, shot, and left for dead. It appeared that O’Neil was making some kind of recovery but today the news is that he passed away around 11 a.m. on Wednesday December 18, 2019. Police have arrested and charged Elden Flowers, 22, for his attempted murder. That charge will be upgraded.// There is another murder to report on that happened on Wednesday December 18, 2019 in Franks Eddy Village, Cayo. David Coc, 39, a resident of the village was chopped to the right side of the head and the right arm by 2 men. Reports are that two men went looking for him at his house and attacked him.//
many years prior to UDP coming into office. This writer always felt that Godwin seemed too intense to be true. Well, that feeling was so right when we all learnt that Godwin was a lighthouse Cortez tree-lover rabid UDP Senator. Hulse knew that the media was out there because he was one of Gapi’s so-called abnormal citizens. The media wanted to be sure that the young lady got a fair dispensation of justice. If the media was not a part of our social justice then you Hulse would not have answered their questions. As is usual, Hulse’s words were non-apologetic and only Godwin Hulse could explain the entire situation. He claimed that since no one else was in the vehicle therefore no one knew what happened, of course Hulse knew since he is Mr. Know-it-all. Interestingly enough, after the verbal assault unto the media, Hulse via the lawyer claims that his client was assaulted first and that the mother should have been charged. Don’t laugh out loud folks, this is a serious matter. Assault on a defenceless mother of your child and verbal assault on the media, this is a terrible new low. The UDP bar keeps dropping. The People’s United Party is now on record condemning this common assault by the Minister’s son and all similar actions suffered by our Belizean women. This needs to end once and for all for Belize to move forward.

Not So Happy Holidays
C
hristmas time in Belize is generally considered a time of great happiness, when family and friends come together to rejoice in the spirit of the season. At least that is what we remember Christmas in Belize was. The reality of what it has become is much more somber and a whole lot less happy. These days there is not much to rejoice or be merry about. Just recently the Statistical Institute of Belize released figures that show that Belize is in recession, a fact that could be felt on the streets long ago. The figures could no longer be hidden by the creative department at the SIB. They issued new figures citing a gross mistake, we had previously advised that SIB could not be trusted to report its findings with accuracy and impartiality. The economic panorama which last quarter was robust and rosy has lost its healthy glow and now the outlook has acquired a rather unhealthy hue. This government has driven the economy largely by acquiring large loans and the awarding of bloated million dollar contracts. It has thoroughly failed to support national industries which are now on the brink of collapse. The North and the South have taken enormous hits this year with the severe drought. The banana and sugar cane industry have lost millions. The fate of the citrus industry is uncertain at this point because of production and management issues. The exports of marine products have reduced and all these have caused the imbalance in trade to grow. The stingy relief that was promised to sugar cane farmers has not materialized and the sugar cane crop is programmed to start in January a full eight weeks behind schedule. It is estimated that the yield will be thirty percent less than last year. It is obvious that there is not much to be merry about this Christmas. There are other indicators of welfare that can be used besides the GDP, these take into consideration climate change, rising income inequality, human rights violations, gender inequality, access to education, crime, poverty, femicide and domestic violence. Then again Belize is not doing well on any of those fronts either. A quick look at the recent interview of Minister Hulse revealed much of the problems at the root of our society. Among many of the eye opening statements the Minister states that in his time as Minister of Police he was unable to charge anyone for the burglary of his own home. He also recognized and accepted as fact that the police department makes trumped up charges on Belizeans. For a sitting minister of government and an ex minister of police to make such statements is damning. Minister Hulse takes exception to his son being charged but the truth is that had it been a regular Joe the charge sheet would have been much longer. The tirade was unbecoming of a minister, the young man is an adult and must be allowed to deal with the consequences of his own actions. For the record, we would like to point out that a parent does not babysit their child, the parent fulfills an obligation to care for their child. Trying to downplay the gravity and severity of the incident shows that there is little regard for women in the current administration. There have been no statements from any of the female members of parliament or cabinet. The special envoy for women and children seems to be away on another paid vacation this time to see The Pope no less. The sixteen days of activism came and went without the 20,000 strong march this year and was marked instead by the disappearance and brutal murders of more women. Poverty and crime walk hand in hand. A season reserved for joyful festivities has now become painted red with the blood of our young men and women. Injustice and impunity resound in every corner of our beautiful Belize. The Christmas cheer doled out to party fanatics comes once a year in the form of cheap toys and ham. Belizeans will continue to pay for these treats long after the thrill of the season fades. The Christmas this year for many will not be what it once was, and the slow season will undoubtedly start sooner and stretch longer this coming year. It is only the hope that this season brings that will sustain us through the dark road ahead. Belizeans are strong and resilient in the face of adversity, there is no doubt that kindness and love abound in Belize. So many organizations and private initiatives can be seen mobilizing to help brothers and sisters in need, Belizeans helping each other in times of need, this is the true spirit of Christmas!

Feliz Navidad.
Party Leader John Briceño
Christmas Message 2019 Season’s Greetings. This is the time when Christians across our Beautiful Belize and Worldwide celebrate the great hope that arrived with the birth of Christ. We are all aware of the scripture reading in Matthew’s gospel Chapter 1 verse 21 when the Angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him that Mary “would give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” This is the great hope that is Christmas It is this optimism that causes us at this time of the year to spread joy and cheer, to be thankful for our blessings and enjoy those Belizean traditions like black fruit cake, ham and turkey and the various cultural food and drinks. We enjoy dressing up the house, trimming the Christmas tree, and excite our children over the arrival of Santa Claus. But something I love the most at this holiday time are the beautiful smiles on so many of our faces at this time of year. Even those who may be struggling and those stressed by trying to meet the many expenses at this time of year, can find some reason to smile. Know that at this time, all Belizeans think of some way to help the many of our people who are suffering from poverty. We should all do what we can to help those most in need not just at Christmas time but all year long and I want to lead a government that will do better at helping Belizeans improve their quality of life. Whether it’s our promise to roll out NHI countrywide, ensuring that our elderly enjoy their golden years, providing affordable housing for our families, especially the elderly, or helping small farmers and small businesses grow or getting more of our children in school, the next PUP government will do all we can to improve the lives of everyone for we mean it when we say we are about the people, all the people. The holiday season reinforces my belief in the goodness of our people, it strengthens my confidence in our Belizean families, in the generosity of our neighbours, and in our pastoral call to love your neighbor as yourself. Taken together, this dis da fu we true, true Christmas, This is what Belizean Christmas is all about. Through it all, let’s stand together, celebrate each other and keep building a brighter future for all of us. On behalf of the People’s United Party and from my family to yours, may joy, happiness and peace reign in our homes this holiday season and all through the New Year. Merry Christmas everybody. Feliz Navidad

All about Sharing & Caring – Monchi presente en las escuelas esta Navidad
By: Josue Carballo Christmas time is a very symbolic and meaningful time where our people get together and celebrate the birth of Christ. In Christ we learn to share and believe in the goodness of all mankind; we believe there is always good and hope in new beginnings. In such form, Orange Walk North Standard Bearer Ramon “Monchi” Cervantes took it upon himself to visit all the primary schools in the division to share time and treats with our kids. Monchi believes that we must invest in our kids, show them goodness so they can live the true meaning of Christmas. With much enthusiasm, Monchi was accompanied by Santa from December 5th to the 11th to the thirteen primary schools all over OW North. During the tour, they met almost three thousand kids, entertaining them with games, music, apples and goodies bags. Monchi is not the Area Representative of OW North as yet, but he definitely knows how to care like one. He has not abandoned his people for years now. On the contrary, his works and impact in the lives of the residents keeps growing. On behalf of Monchi and the Orange Walk North PUP Executive, warm wishes are extended as their Christmas program now expands into parks and villages. Merry Christmas and Prosperity in 2020 for all!

My friends. We are entering that always special time of the year – a time of birth and rebirth, a time of love, hope, family and friends, but also a time that signals the end of one year, and the start of another. Together, we have endured many challenging times in 2019. Truthfully, it has not been an easy year for us. We lost loved ones to the violence that plagues us. We endured financial hardships. We struggled to build good lives for ourselves and our families. There were successes and failures, joys and the inevitable sorrows. At times we lost hope, and even experienced despair. That is the cycle of life. As a people, though, we are nothing if not resilient. We know how to rise from the ashes. We know how to survive tragedy and loss, and we know how to work hard. I believe that Orange Walk is the best District in the country. I always have. We can boast the most incredible mix of entrepreneurs, businesses, industries, artisans, farmers and professionals. We are a strong and proud people. This Christmas, my message is simple. We must look after those who are less fortunate and extend a helping hand to those who need it. We must be kind and good to others, whether they be strangers or loved ones. We must give as much as we can, because it really is in giving that we receive. Each day we are reminded that time is promised to none of us, and every breath is a gift from God. Each day we are reminded that we must live, and love like it is our last. This Christmas open your hearts, take nothing for granted, and show appreciation for all that you have. This past year, it has been my greatest honour, privilege and pleasure to serve you all as Mayor. I think, together, we have achieved much for our community and people. I am grateful as always for the support and confidence you ALL continue to give the Orange Walk Town Council. For me, this has been a year of transformation, as I made the decision to run for higher office, and to be the voice of the people in Orange Walk East. I thank you for the tremendous support and love with which I have been made welcome. I promise you that I will serve well, with integrity and respect for all. Let us spend a Christmas filled with love, for our friends and families and those around us. And

The 2019 Christmas holidays are here and the year 2020 is just around the corner. Hello, I am Andre Perez your PUP Standard bearer for Belize Rural South. This is the season to be happy with family and friends around. But, it is also a time to reflect on what 2019 has been and what can be done for the New Year 2020. This past year has been a most difficult year particularly seeing an unusually slow tourist season that had not been seen in years. Indeed, it has been a most challenging year, economically affecting also the social fabric of life and that has given rise to violence and crime on both islands of Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye. Many of us living on las islas bonitas have also lost dear friends and family. Access to health care remains a priority for all of us. However, the New Year brings an opportunity to believe again and to believe that it is in each of us to create the change we want to see on our island communities. It is the year of hope, the year of General Elections, the year to get it right. Let’s make this new year a year where no obstacle will be too big to overcome with a united Belize and united residents of our

THE BELIZE TIMES
OFFENSIVE TO CHRISTIANS Symbols are symbolic of important events and their displays help to capture the meaning and essence of what they are about. In the Christian religion, the Sign of the Cross says it all. In the Roman Catholic religion images of the Virgin Mary are powerful. Christmas is set aside as the birthday of Jesus Christ whom Christians believe is the son of God. Belize is a Christian country. We may not be perfect Christians and goodness knows we could do with a heavy dose of real Christianity but it is still our religion. Christmas in Belize in the 1950’s and 1960’s was about the birth of Jesus. Under many trees in many homes were nativity scenes. Little baby Jesus in the manger, is Mom Mary, a mere teenager, his stepfather Joseph and a few animals like sheep and cow to remind us how poor they were that the baby could not even be born in a hospital or a boarding house. On Albert Street, the main shopping center of Belize City, several stores displayed the nativity scene. The Guild of the Holy Name and the Mothers Union from St. John’s Cathedral as did many groups from the many denominations traversed the streets and the neighbourhood singing wonderful Christmas songs. Yes, Christmas is a party. We are celebrating the birth of our savior, we drink and dance and be merry. But you tell me now, how as the years have passed we allow Santa Claus (a big fat obese white man) Frosty the Snow Man (Belize is a tropical country) Rudolph the red nosed reindeer (reindeer cannot fly) to replace Baby Jesus and the message of peace and love that he represents? You ask yourself how the merchants, be they Chinese, Hindu, aliens or Belizeans, all are promoting and celebrating Christmas with Santa Claus, not Jesus? Ask yourself how come Jesus who loved poor people and didn’t have a kind word to say about the rich, is not a part of celebrating his own birthday. There must be a reason why. Christmas is no longer about Jesus, or his message of love. It is about money and material things. It is a promotion of greed and consumerism. Christmas in Belize is not about Jesus, what it has become is offensive to Christians and they should start to push back; hard and fast. This year, in all the churches from all the denominations there should be a resounding back-lash from the Sermons of every Pastor, Preacher, Priest and Bishop. Put Christ back in Christmas. Jesus is the reason for the season. Amen! JOHNNY’S BIG CHALLENGE Here we are, the end of another year in which the failure of the Prime Minister to come up with solutions to the rising crime and murders, is his shameful legacy. What a legacy. Twelve years of abject failure in offering no solutions except for a few knee-jerk legislation like depriving accused of a jury trial, or locking up by denying bail persons with firearms, none of which has reduced crime and murders. There is no justification for the massive amounts of millions upon millions of dollars spent on none priority projects and roads not needed now, while nothing is spent on poverty and job creation. Roads and buildings, but nothing for people, education and health care. Johnny Briceño, who God willing will become the next Prime Minister, has a big challenge. He has always taken the high road and the mature position on crime. He has stated publicly it is not to be a political football. He has publicly offered the hand of cooperation to fight crime. The Crime Minister has rejected this statesman-like approach of our Party Leader. Let there be no doubt. Crime is a huge issue for the people of Belize. It is probably their number one concern. No one is safe in Dean Barrow’s Belize. Not children, not the elderly, not women and certainly not men. No one is safe. Not in the villages, not in the towns, not at public places, not even in homes. What Johnny has been giving thought to and discussing with his advisers and Executive are a number of key initiatives. He is already committed to a National Youth Brigade in which there will be widespread skills training, discipline and job preparation. There will be special legislation and funding for a South Side Development Zone with tax rebates and incentives for job and hiring of single mothers and vulnerable youths. These are laudable ideas that are practical and workable and will contribute to tackling indiscipline and criminality. Single mothers will be singled out for special help. Arts & crafts and local souvenirs for the tourist trade will benefit from special home training and cooperative type income earnings. Much can be done and much will be done because the Party Leader has the will to see that Belize becomes a safe place again. Johnny is being asked to consider denouncing Dean Barrow for his coldhearted neglect of the crime issue and for the PUP Standard Bearers to take the debate direct to the people of Belize in the new year. Crime is a serious issue and the Party Leader and his executive are taking it seriously. D.P.P. BOMBS BARROW? Last week’s Amandala newspaper mentioned the Director of Public Prosecution’s statement that she has thought many times that “political influence, financial influence even street influence” are factors in the delivery of justice in Belize. Whatever does she mean? Sounds she is saying the system needs fixing, strengthening. Whoever is responsible for such a state of affairs? Can’t be the Chief Justice, he is always calling out for financing from the Executive, headed by the Prime Minister.

OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY GENERAL Wednesday, December 18, 2019 THE PUP CALLS FOR ZERO TOLERANCE ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN Today, Belizeans and particularly residents in Belmopan, heard the harrowing cries and pain of a mother who detailed on PLUS and Vibes TV the physical assault and threats to her daughter and her one-year old granddaughter. The mother alleged that it is the son of a Minister of government who has had a pattern of abusive behavior but who operates above the law due to his high connections in government. The accusations, allegations and sordid details quickly made the social media and talk show circuit with further allegations that the victim’s statement has gone missing from the police and the accused perpetrator has been released.
The PUP welcomed earlier statements by the Commissioner that he would focus on domestic violence as one of his areas of action to reduce crime. The PUP urges him to act decisively in addressing this issue and calls on the authorities, in particular the Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, to carry out a thorough and fair investigation into these serious allegations. The PUP strongly condemns all acts of violence and discrimination against women and reminds all Belizeans that no one is above the law. The PUP further calls on all political, religious , education and business leaders to take a ZERO tolerance approach to violence against women and to champion policies and legislation that seeks to protect our women and children against abuse, sexual harassment and violence. We await public, official updates on what transpired in this matter and will be monitoring this matter very closely.

Rafael Huezo, Sr.
Prayer To The Holy Spirit
O Holy Spirit, You who are the Fountainhead of all knowledge, Who Illuminate the path way which enables me to reach my goal. You Who shares your Divine gift permitting me to forgive and forget past insults and injustices, and Who are always at my side within reaching distance. I desire in this short supplication to thank You for all that You have done for me; and to assure You once more that I never want to be separated from You under any circumstances, no matter what the incentive. I want to be with You, I along with my loved ones, cradled in Your unending love. Thank You for your never-failing kindness towards me and those I call my own. (Prayer to be offered for three consecutive days: Faith in The Holy Spirit will cause Him to respond to your request no matter how difficult the problem might be. Publish prayer as soon as request has been Granted .) Thank You Holy Spirit. C.A.B.
