$259 MILLION to the biggest crony ever!

Thursday, 05 December 2019 It was announced this week, to nobody’s surprise, that Prime Minister Dean Barrow’s favourite contractor was awarded two more contracts worth $134MILLION for work to be done on the Coastal Road. While the Minister of Works, Rene ‘Kickback’ Montero has not confirmed yet, the Belize Times has been reliably informed that Hernandez will also receive the contract for the replacement of the Haulover Bridge, another $49MILLION. In the House of Representatives on Wednesday, the Prime Minister continued to do what he has done on every occasion – defend Imer Hernandez and praise the quality of the works he has done in this country. Then again, this is the same Prime Minister who has been shown photographic evidence of the mess made on various road by Hernandez, and still has refused to see. And it is the same Prime Minister who on national television has boasted that Imer Hernandez is a good UDP. On Wednesday, the Prime Minister must have hurt his back badly when he jumped up in a hurry just as the Hon. John Briceño was about to reveal the findings of a surprise spot check by the IDB on a project being carried out by Hernandez on the George Price Highway, funded by the IDB. Barrow blustered and stammered because he knows exactly what is happening under his watch. The Belize Times has been reliably informed that that surprise audit turned up a check written to a very senior member of the UDP for $500,000. We are told that very soon the findings will be made public for all to see. Political observers have speculated that the awarding of hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts to one man, an obviously incompetent contractor, could only point to massive kickbacks and hustling at the highest level. Those same political observers point out that the awarding of such massive contracts to Hernandez, just before elections, can only suggest that the UDP is putting aside money from these contracts for elections. The Opposition PUP, determined to put a stop to the shameless hustling, has written to the IDB which has funded many of these projects, and has provided evidence of the substandard work done by Hernandez. The IDB, in turn, has invited representatives of the Opposition to meet with them shortly. PUP Leader John Briceño has promised that when the PUP comes to power, every bloated contract issued by the Ministry of Works will be the subject of an independent audit. He has committed also to the people of Belize that all who are found complicit in the corruption that has characterized this Barrow Administration will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. And that includes not only those at the highest level of Government who have orchestrated the fleecing of tens of millions of dollars, but those in government offices who have facilitated the fleecing, including those who have used insider knowledge to allegedly tamper with bids to ensure that Hernandez is awarded these contracts.

WEALTHY LAND OWNERS NEED MORE TIME TO SAVE 90 MILLION Dec 4, 2019 That fateful August 2019 Day when the UDP attempted to write-off a little more than 40K for the Cabinet Secretary’s son, the UDP also introduced the writing off of 90 million dollars to wealthy land owners. Given the uproar, the Prime Minister sent out a technocrat to explain that the Prime Minister was not really infallible and that there wasn’t really a write off. Well as we all know, if you do not need to pay off a bill or part of a bill to the government then it is a write off. The euphemism given to this write-off was Partial Remission of Land Tax Arrears Programme which was originally scheduled to last six months. Big Landowners, who owe land taxes, will be able to settle or manage arrears during a time span of six months which Hugo Patt found it difficult to count with his fingers. This past October, a statutory instrument was gazetted which extends the programme to June first instead of April 2020, thus granting

undeserving landowners additional time. At the December 4 House meeting, Opposition Leader John Briceño asked Patt why there was the need to extend the deadline into the new fiscal year. The bill, however, has the deadline as April, beyond the new fiscal year. When the Opposition Leader John Briceño asked Minister Patt about it, he admitted there was a mistake. Hugo Patt, Minister of Natural Resources: “The actual programme started in October so that we are asking for an extension to meet the sixth month period that was originally scheduled. So we are looking at the start of November and we are targeting the end of the fiscal year.” John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition: “But this is saying six months.” Hugo Patt (counting with fingers): “Six months: October, November December, January, February and March.” John Briceño: “This is saying commencing the first of December so this will go all in the way of May of next year.”

Barrow Rejects Low Prices for Butane Dean Barrow and the United Democratic Party called for a Special House meeting today to legally shaft the butane consumers of the country by telling them that they cannot have low Liquid Petroleum Gas(LPG). Even though the legislation is a sort of axe versus who in a Freudian slip Barrow called Cartel or Mafia, the Barrow administration again showed that they are definitely lame clueless ducks. They did not care nor could they find how to channel this Butane black Friday to benefit the consumers for this Christmas. All Barrow was hellbent on doing is getting it his way even if he had to do it in a 2019 version of the Christmas retrenchment. In layman’s terms, Dean Barrow went to the house to tell the foreign monopoly that they could not lower the prices of their butane. This monopoly is based in Mexico and has been importing butane for as many years as most of us have memory of Belize. Even if they have held Belize hostage, Dean Barrow could have found someway somehow to let consumers benefit in the six months or so before the Belize Gas Company comes into effect. On the sixteenth of November, GoB announced fixed prices per gallon of butane gas. This coincides with when LPG importers Belize Western Energy Limited, Gas Tomza, and Southern Choice Butane (Zeta Gas) began selling butane at a much cheaper price. Note that the main monopoly is embodied in these three companies. This was a reaction to the National Gas Compa-

Hugo Patt: “No, we have just moved, actually that would have been a typo mistake. It’s effective the first of October to end in the fiscal year of March.” John Briceño: “So April will not be included?” Hugo Patt: “Not be included.” John Briceño: “It is a massive typo, typing error that they made.” Hugo Patt: “It will end in the fiscal year of March.” All in all, Hugo Patt, in this house meeting, was far from having the brash persona he claimed to have during his speech at John Saldivar’s convention. Patt was the epitome of what we have been claiming incessantly; the UDP is incompetent and they can only succeed at corrupting every government process aimed at helping the Belizean people. Hugo is at the top of the hotbed of corruption, the lands department, so his mobile lands program needed more to keep its bad name so they decided to write off 90 million dollars that they are inept at collecting or wish not to collect. They attempt to hide this by changing the name of the indecent process and when the wealthy landowners cannot find the time to come as save themselves the few dollars the UDP gives them more time. Who does that? The UDP does!!

ny which would be the sole importer of butane in the country by mid-year 2020. Barrow says that the legislation of prices is necessary to prevent predatory pricing by major importers who have engaged in an act of driving prices down well below the maximum ceiling for retail and wholesale of LPG. The normal Belizeans see low prices as good news but the government believes that the companies are focusing on driving out some twenty-five local retailers out of the market. At the House, the PUP representatives did not hold back. John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition: “I’ve heard government’s protecting the consumers from price gouging, wanting to make sure that the suppliers will not take advantage of the consumers. I think this is the first time that the government is protecting the suppliers that they cannot go low below a certain price. This is madness … especially during these times Christmas times, everyone will do a lot of cooking, a lot of baking and yet the government would not allow the competition to reduce the price. It really makes absolutely no sense.” Cordel Hyde, Area Rep., Lake Independence: “Maybe I am missing something but I would think that we would pass to protect the majority of people not a handful of people. … Don’t come to tell me it is something that you people will shaft us, it is locals that will shaft us, it is not foreigners who will shaft you. I don’t care who it is, I don’t want anyone to shaft me.” Kareem Musa, Area Rep., Caribbean Shores: “… this particular Act is a direct assault on the vast majority of poor and middle class Belizeans, …”

The Filter is slipping

T

his week the Government of Belize continues to indulge their delusion feeding it with a veritable smorgasbord of alternative facts. The manipulation, organization and presentation of data in order that it paints the rosy, glowing picture of a robust economy is now standard practice. It seems the PM has employed the use of Snapchat filters complete with rosy cheeks and cute butterflies to hide the fact that our economy is not all he has led us to believe. If the filter slides even just a bit we can catch a glimpse of the sallow, sickly economy that lies underneath. The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) this last week issued the Labour Force survey as of September 2019. Needless to say as compared to the previous dated April 2019 the figures, as everything else under this GOB, simply just do not add up. Let us consider that the explanation for the 2.7 percentage increase in the unemployment rate between April and September is that the labour force grew faster than the rate at which jobs were created not withstanding the creation of 5,600 new jobs. How is it possible for the labour force to increase by 6.5 percent in a six month period given that for decades the entire population of Belize only increases by less than 3 percent annually? According to the figures the number of unemployed persons grew from 13,658 to 19,849 or a staggering 45 percent increase in unemployment in just six months. The underemployment figure is just as important and equally alarming since it increased from just around twenty five thousand persons to about thirty eight thousand. This is essentially a 52 percent increase in underemployment where persons are working anywhere from just one hour to less than thirty five hours per week. Of particular note and interest is that the Belize District has managed to almost double their unemployment rate from 6.8 in April to 12.5 in September. The median monthly income has plummeted yet again to 1,134. The UDP manage these incredible feats of mismanagement under the veil of heavy statistical misrepresentation to claim a robust and prosperous economy. The UDP promised no new taxes, a decrease in the cost of living, and a reduction in the poverty rates. This week we witnessed Prime Minister Barrow side with BIG Business Interests against the little man. Two Cents Tracy then defended the position that a floor for LPG prices and legislation to penalize those who sell below the government regulated price is the answer to freeze market forces in Belize. It has become necessary to protect the twenty five retailers over the interests of over 70 percent of households in this country who would enjoy a few months respite from crippling prices. It is ridiculous in the extreme, the extent to which the PM will risk his beloved legacy to protect this latest scheme. The Better Business Bureau has called the National Gas Company “the worst idea of the decade, citing that the government is incapable of regulating itself and will bring more taxes and promote inefficiency and hardship. Supply and demand are the market forces that regulate prices. It is a given that competition reduces prices and that ultimately beneficial to consumers. The UDP must answer why they place Big Business interests over the interests of the Ordinary Belizean whom they serve. Or is it that it is their own interests they prioritize? We have been shafted time and again as we were reminded by Hon Cordel Hyde, but the sad reality is that Cabinet has been the instrument. The Christmas Cheer is all set and hopefully there will be a little something extra in cash to buy the fuel needed for cooking the hams these turkeys will be handing out. #NOMORESHAFT

#NOMORESHAFT

QUESTIONS TO THE MINISTERS

1. Considering the comments from the Junior Minister of Trade about not allowing the providers of butane to sell butane at a lower price than what the government is controlling, will the real minister, who is the Prime Minister, say whose interest is being protected in this decision, will he say if it is in the best interest of the UDP to protect the rich at the expense of the poor? 2. Now that Danny Mason has been found guilty and considering the comment by the Prime Minister that his connection to so many UDP ministers created an embarrassment to his Party, will the PM say if he would be willing to ask those closely connected to Danny Mason to leave his Cabinet? 3. Will the Minister of Health please inform the Belize people if the much needed lifesaving antiretroviral medications that his ministry caused to run out have been procured? Also will the Minister of Health inform Belizeans of the measures being taken to help our clinics and hospitals deal with the continuing dengue problem in Belize? 4. Considering the strong defense of UDP Crony and Contractor Imer Hernandez, whose works on Faber’s Road, the roundabout at the Orange Walk Bypass junction, the work at the Corozal/Chetumal border and the many other poorly constructed road works familiar to most Belizeans, will the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance please say if he has done any inspection of any of the works carried out by UDP Contractor Imer Hernandez?

A PARADIGM SHIFT FOR THE FIGHT AGAINST GENDER BASED VIOLENCE 16 Days of activism (25th November - 10th December)

by Dita Berbey – Executive Member of the United Women’s Group. I want to share with you a paradigm shift on the issues of gender violence, assault, sexual harassment and sexual abuse of children. These have been seen as women’s issues that some “good men” help out with. I have a problem with that. I don’t see these as Women’s issues that “some good men” help out with. As a matter of fact, I am going to argue that these are men’s issues. Calling gender violence a woman’s issue is part of the problem for a number of reasons. First of all it gives men an excuse not to pay attention because when they hear the term women’s issues they tend to tune it out and think, I’m a guy, that’s for the girls or the women and as a result a lot of men don’t get past the first sentence. This is also true by way of the word Gender. When people hear the word gender they think it refers to women and associate it with women’s issues and in each case the dominant group, men, are left out. Isn’t it amazing how this works? Men have been largely erased from a subject that is centrally about them. The way that we think and the language we use, conspires to keep our attention off men. We all know that victim blaming is pervasive in our society, which is to say, blaming the person to whom something was done rather that the person who did it. When we say things like - “Why do these women go out with these men?” - “Why are they attracted to these men?” -“What was she wearing at that party?” -“Why was she drinking with that group of guys?” - “How stupid can you be?”. This is victim blaming and there are numerous reasons for it. One of them is that our whole cognitive and cultural structure is set up to ask questions about women and women’s choices and what they are doing, thinking and wearing. But asking questions about women is not going to get us anywhere in terms of preventing violence. We have to begin to ask a different set of questions. Questions like, “Why do these men beat women?”- “Why is domestic violence still such a huge issue around the world?”- What’s going on! “Why do so many men feel the need to physically, sexually, emotionally, financially and verbally abuse women and girls, and even men and boys whom they claim to love? What’s going on with MEN! This is a common problem in our society and all over the world today. We hear over and over about major scandals erupting in the churches, sports programs, Boys Scouts, in our local communities all over the country and the world. We hear about it all the time, every single day. So let’s ask the important questions “What is going on with our men?”-“Why do so many men rape

women and why do so many men rape other men?” What is the role of the various institutions in our society that help to produce these abusive men at pandemic rates?” This isn’t about individual perpetrators, which is a naive way of understanding what a much deeper and systematic social problem is. Perpetrators are not these monsters that crawl out of the swamp and come into town and do their cruel and nasty business and then retreat into the darkness; that is a very naive notion. They are normal, everyday looking individuals. So we continue to question, “What is wrong with the religious beliefs, the sports culture, the family structure and economics. How does all this interconnect with race and ethnicity? After we start making these connections and asking these types of serious questions, then we can begin to do something to make a difference. We can shift the practices, change the socialization of boys and the definition of manhood that lead to these current outcomes. If we are continually focusing on what women are doing and thinking, we are not going to achieve gender equality. Women who speak out on these issues are constantly demeaned and called nasty names like male basher, man hater and even the disgusting and degrading term “feminazi”. This is called “kill the messenger”, because women are standing up and speaking out for themselves as well as for men and boys. It’s a statement to sit them down and shut them up and keep the current systems in place because traditional society doesn’t like when women rock the boat or when they challenge power. Thankfully, women are being empowered and we now live in a world filled with brave and bold leaders who can counteract traditional ideology. We need more men who have the courage and strength to stand up with women and not against them and stop the rhetoric that somehow this is a battle between the sexes because we live in this world together. What about all the boys who are profoundly affected in a negative way by the abuse inflicted upon their mothers, sisters and themselves? Let us not ignore the young men and boys who have

been traumatized by men’s violence. The same system that produces men who abuse women also produces men who abuse other men. That is one thing both men and women have in common, we are both victims of male violence. In 2014 the United Nations launched its #HeForShe campaign. A movement geared towards the importance of educating women and men on gender equality. The campaign which has become a

global phenomenon especially with the introduction speech of UN Ambassador Emma Watson, realizing that the world is at a turning point and people everywhere understand and support the idea of Gender Equality. They know it’s not a woman’s issue but a human rights issue. HeForShe is an invitation for men and people of all genders to stand in solidarity with women to create a bold, visible and united force for gender equality and by extension end violence against women. This situation cannot be overlooked, and although progress has been made, the end of violence against women and girls is far from today’s reality. Violence against women and girls remains one of the most pervasive global human rights issues. A very impactful UN Ambassador and an advocate for the HeForShe movement Angelina Jolie summarized the movement in one quote “There is no greater pillar of stability than a strong, free and educated woman and there is no more inspiring role model than a man who respects and cherishes women and champions their leadership and equality”. Let us all unite to end gender based violence!

THE BELIZE TIMES

BELLY of the

BEAST

The Shaft Under this UDP government, Belizeans should be well familiar with the shaft. ‘Normal’ Belizeans have gotten the shaft on so many occasions from the UDP that we have become used to it. What we are getting right now is called the Christmas shaft, a new variety. Mr. Barrow, that fine fellow, is passing legislation which will force butane importers to raise their prices, because see, apparently the companies are selling for too low and consumers are benefitting. So with urgency, the UDP is passing a law which will state that these importers can’t continue to drop their prices below what government dictates. Is that madness or what? For the first time under this UDP, Belizeans are getting a break. We use butane for everything, and so when we heard about lower costs, it was a good thing. But the government had to go screw it up. We figure it has nothing to do with any price war or any such thing. We believe it has to do, quite simply, with the taxes that government rakes in. The lower the cost of butane, the less taxes to government. So as far as old bad back Barrow is concerned, to hell with the consumers. He’ll get the sense soon enough. Imer Again We don’t really like to get too personal in this column, but that damned Imer is a pig, and Dean Barrow and all those who participated in this travesty, including no doubt Minister of Works Rene ‘Kickback’ Montero and Imer’s own uncle Gaspar are worthless scum. How in the name of all that’s holy could Imer Hernandez have been given another contract, this time for $134 MILLION to pave the Coastal Road? That is stinking corruption at its worst, and we know exactly how it’s done, because we’ve been told. Imer sends in a bid to the relevant Ministry, and then his bid is modified and pushed through while others are held back, ensuring that he gets the nod. We know it, and it’s illegal, and people are going to go to jail. That is the God’s truth. This is too much now. How can a man who hasn’t been able to competently handle one project in his entire contractor’s career since 2008, continue to get hundreds of millions in contracts? As the honourable John pointed out, just a few of Imer’s contracts amount to $259MILLION. That is grotesque. Outrageous. Jail, I tell you. Imer and everybody who colluded to rob this country of so much money. Mason Did we mention that porky pig from Belmopan hasn’t been sleeping well for a lot of nights? Either the man was worried sick about the possibility that Mason would walk and talk, or he’s been missing all those boxers parties at Mason’s house. Anyway, that’s another story for another time. So after the verdict, porky issues the strangest press release from the Ministry of National Security. The man is so confused that although the release is from the Ministry, he writes it in the first person and is thanking God for justice (strike him down now Lord). Porky the pig also says in that release, yo know what, let’s just forget this and move on. LOL. Like really? Forget that you were Mason’s best buddy, business partner, party partner, travel partner and some say much more than that. Is that what we should forget? Should we forget that your right hand, Jesus Castillo, is the one who introduced now convicted killer to Pastor Lucas? Should we forget that Jesus Castillo, your right hand, was drinking in the bar with Mason when the head was outside in his pickup? You better come again with that, porky, because the people will never forget, and you better believe that the man upstairs will never forget. Sick Puppy I swear, porky pig in Belmopan is a sick, sick dog, and according to UDP soldier Brian Yellow Man Audinett, Patrick Faber is a sick puppy. Yellow visited Channel 7 to say that Patsy called and threatened him and Shyne and Finnegan and even Dean Oliver. What a thing, what a thing. It would actually be funny if it wasn’t so serious. There are two choices for leader of the UDP, and both of them are incredibly sick individuals, in their own way. And this is all the UDP has to offer. That’s it. Two sick individuals for leader, and a bunch of sick individuals following one or the other who don’t even know which way to turn. Like we said, it’d be funny if this bunch of clowns weren’t actually running the country right now.

GUILTY AS CHARGED The Mason Five is Convicted of Beheading Pastor Lue Dec 3, 2019 Three Years and five months after the beheading of Pastor Llewelyn Lucas in Belmopan, Cayo District there can finally be some sense of closure for Pastor Llewellyn Lucas’s family and a sense of justice served in many expectant Belizeans. This Tuesday December 3, 2019 was a Belizean cool but yet with pent up fervour just in case things go extremely wrong. There is no doubt that this case was definitely not spent even after under oath revelations by multiple witnesses and after William (Rajesh Ouelette) Mason dragged four grown men to a guilty verdict of Murder by Supreme Court Judge Antoinette Moore. Belize was waiting at their favourite media gadget waiting to hear if John Saldivar’s friend and former business associate was guilty. There is no other explanation for the large scale interest on this trial. As soon as the verdict was pronounced the Ministry of National Security and of course John Saldivar issued a sort of hurray to the verdict thanking the Almighty

God for the decision. Really? Yes he did. The Lucas Family was definitely not amused with that. What Saldivar did not countenance is that just maybe a silent treatment was better for him. Anyone that was in doubt as to how much Saldivar was involved in this trial has no doubt now. Saldivar was definitely glued to the process and the results of this trial. He lied at his convention when he stated that this issue was spent. The hip hip hurray in celebration of the five men found guilty spelled it all. How involved was he in this? That is the only question. The actual verdict succeeded a lengthy session in which Justice Antoinette Moore point by point reviewed a number of points highlighted by a summary judgment. The court house as was customary was heavily guarded, in and around the building. The press was not allowed to use electronic equipment and pictures of the men on the verdict day were not possible. Justice Moore, in reflecting on the proof of guilt, turned to the heap of circumstantial evidence presented by the prosecution. The damning

nature of the forensic, electronic and DNA evidence used to prove responsibility for Lucas demise ultimately led to the guilty verdict. In applying the common law doctrine of joint enterprise, Justice Moore found that William Mason, Ashton Vanegas, Ernest Castillo and brothers Kieron and Terrence Fernandez acted in concert during the commission of the crime. For that they have been condemned for the crime of murder while sentencing in this case will be on a future date. The defence now has 21 days in which to appeal the verdict but none of the lawyers indicated if there was a

2019 strong or weak possibility of this. What is definite is that the court of public opinion is out there and were waiting for this day. Oscar Mira, PUP Standard Bearer for Belmopan had this to say on social media: “Justice has not fully been served. The press release by John Saldivar is a shameful document. It washes its hands from any association with Danny Mason and this is something that I will not accept. The facts and evidence are clear. Mason was an investor and business associate in the Belmopan Bandits. How dare you act like these facts did not happen? Have we forgotten that Danny Mason was invited to National Security Meetings? How can you deny these facts? Have we forgotten that Mason himself brought up your name in the trial? Justice has not been fully served. Danny Mason was politically connected in Belmopan. He attended National Security meetings. Go somewhere else with your hypocritical press release. No bring dat yah. You should just keep quiet in this case. The people know. Belmopan people know. In fact, it was the Prime Minister himself who said, “The RELATIONSHIP between Minister Saldivar and Mr. Mason was such as to make the public and indeed myself and other members of Cabinet uncomfortable…”

THE BELIZE TIMES

THINK ABOUT IT MASON COULD HAVE WON William Danny Mason could have won his murder trial. Instead, he and four of his workers were found guilty in one of Belize’s more sensational murder trials. Justice Antoinette Moore on Tuesday 3rd December in the Belmopan Supreme Court reviewed the relevant portions of the evidence before pronouncing a guilty verdict on each of the five accused. Mason could have won, according to two experienced trial lawyers. One suggestion was based on the fact that one of the accused gave police a confession statement that he killed and decapitated Pastor Llewellyn Lucas. Mason and the others could have accepted that confession and distanced themselves from the killing and claim they were elsewhere on the farm or had gone to Belize City and on their return, the killer informed that Pastor Lewis tried to escape and was killed in a struggle or had escaped. He hid the head in a bag, put it in a bucket and placed it in the pickup without the others knowledge. But their defense was something else, and very weak. Three of the accused declined to say anything in their defense. The other two which included Mason gave lame excuses and claimed not to see or know anything. What is clear is that the Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs. Cherylynn Vidal put forward her evidence in a clear and methodical manner. Based entirely on circumstantial evidence, electronic evidence and forensic evidence. The evidence was so overwhelming and incontrovertible, that Judge Moore could have arrived at no other conclusion but guilty as charged. Sentencing will take place at a later date, to be set by the Court. Likely to be anything from 30 to 40 years in jail. It is not clear why the government did not ask for the death penalty as the cutting off of Pastor Lewis head is a gross and unacceptable form of murder which was unheard of a few years ago. Now there are about 4 or 5 such decapitations which has occurred in the once peaceful country of Belize. SGT HOLLY VASQUEZ Judge Moore before handing down sentence on Mason and his fellow murderers, took a few minutes to laud praises on the police officer who single-handedly was the key card in bringing Mason to justice. Vasquez, a corporal at the time, was on the lookout for a black pickup which had just been reported in a robbery in Belmopan. He had just signed out as completing his shift at the Belmopan Station. But decided to go the extra mile. He joined a search party and began scouting the Belmopan areas. This is how he came upon Mason’s pickup. Attempts to search the pickup was met with resistance and hostility. Vasquez spotted firearms in the pickup and stood his ground. This is how the head of Pastor Lewis was discovered and Mason and his crew were forcibly detained and taken to the Station. Vasquez, with quick presence of mind obtained a Search Warrant and this is how revealing video footage were captured which showed the Pastor visiting Mason’s home and how he was abducted and thrown in the back of Mason’s pickup. Older generations of creoles would say the hand of God intervened. Vasquez is deserving of a special reward and an accelerated promotion. Big respect Sergeant Holly Vasquez, Big respect. BARROW DEFENDS IMER Prime Minister Barrow has a long history of defending wrongdoing and illegality. So it surprised no one that the mounting criticism against the constant award of massive multimillion dollars contract were once again defended by the Prime Minister. When Minister Castro was exposed using taxpayers monies to buy expensive racing bicycles for his sons and was paying expenses for funeral, the self-righteous Prime Minister told Belizeans it was distasteful, but it was not illegal. When the ongoing scandals at the Lands Department were leaking out week after week, the Prime Minister said the office was a hotbed of corruption. With the immigration scandal he allowed the former Commissioner of Police to defy a Supreme Court Order to do his job and investigate Minister Penner. No UDP crony, family, high ranking police officer or Minister has ever been investigated under Prime Minister Barrow. Despite hundreds of known examples and instances of corruption. This Wednesday in the House of Representatives, Hon. John Briceno graphically detailed several instances of known, public poor quality of work done by UDP family member Imer Hernandez. The Minister of Works, who will most likely be investigated when government changes next year, was at pains to explain what a wonderful contractor Imer is. But to try and convince a skeptical public that was not enough, the Prime Minister had to jump in and with his now stale facial expressions and hand gesticulations he defended the indefensible, and had to hide behind his worn-out statement that foreign financiers had found Imer to be a great contractor. Wow! You know we are in trouble when our Prime Minister tells us not to believe our own eyes, and what we see, but believe a few foreigners instead. The end is coming to a polling station near you.
