BROKE THE LAW MASSIVE IRREGULARITIES IN SAN PEDRO ELECTION Wednesday, 16 May 2018 During hours of intense questioning by attorney Eamon Courtenay, SC, on Monday, May 14, 2018 election officials including Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai admitted to the most outrageous election irregularities. Tamai, Returning Officer Catherine Cumberbatch and Presiding Officer Desiree Flowers were in the court of Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin after an election petition brought by the People’s United Party, specifically its municipal slate in San Pedro, asking that elections held in that municipality on March 7, 2018 be voided and a new election ordered.

When the election results were released in the early hours of March 8, the UDP’s candidate, incumbent Mayor Daniel Guerrero, had apparently scraped by the PUP’s Abner Andre Perez by only 38 votes – 2,667 to 2,629.

There was immediate protest after it was revealed that there were discrepancies with the ballots in which some

Despite the outcry the UDP pushed ahead with the results and in a press conference post-elections Prime Minister Dean Barrow took the high-handed position of declaring that the results were final. But the PUP was having none of that and filed its petition shortly after.

On the stand, incredibly, Presiding Officer Catherine Cumberbatch admitted that there was a discrepancy with the number of ballot papers used, discovered the very night of elections during the counting, and instead of recounting to discover the source of that discrepancy, she simply made alterations on the forms so that the figures of ballots used and

unused matched.

Attorney Eamon Courtenay explained to the media that “What they did - and this is the point we were making to the Chief Justice - what the Elections and Boundaries Commission, and Miss Cumberbatch, in particular, did was that they realized this mistake, and simply put on the form, oh, strike out the numbers, and add 275. Change around the numbers and say, oh, that is accurate. And I pointed out to Ms. Cumberbatch, you can only certify that if you went yourself, and checked the actual ballots, and said, yes, 275 were actually accounted for, and then, put it on the form. She did not do that, and therefore, her certificate of correcting it, in our submissions, cannot be relied on.”

But the irregularities run deeper

Belmopan Mayor’s Home Hosed with Bullets Thursday, 17 May 2018 On Monday night, at around 10:30pm, the home of Belmopan Mayor Khalid Belisle was riddled with bullets as he and his fiancée slept inside. Up to press time, neither the Mayor nor the Belmopan Police Department seem to have a clue as to who would visit such violence on a politician who maintains that he has walked the straight and narrow in his political and personal life.

In various interviews with the media, Mayor Belisle recounted that they were asleep in bed when he heard what sounded like four loud bangs, but didn’t associate them with gunshots. It was not until the following morning that a search of the home revealed bullet-holes, and a check of his fiancée’s vehicle likewise disclosed that bullets had hit that as well. The Police were called in, along with Scenes of Crime personnel, and eight expended shell casings were discovered outside the home, located on Valencia Street in the Orchid Garden residential area of Belmopan.

The Mayor has also insisted that he can imagine no reason why he would be targeted in this fashion, but was quick to point out that he is certain that it is in no way politically motivated. Recently the Belmopan City Council was aggressive in removing families who had squatted in a buffer zone in another residential area of Belmopan, but Belisle told the media that he did not believe Monday night’s shooting was related to that.

The Belmopan Executive Branch of the People’s United Party issued a release on Tuesday in which it condemned the actions of the perpetrator or perpetrators who targeted Belisle, pointing out that there can be no tolerance for such violence or lawlessness in Belmopan.

When the Belize Times checked with Belmopan Police today, we were told that they are investigating, but have no suspects at this time.

In one such incident, his Government issued luxury SUV ended up in the Caribbean Sea, and in another, a woman reported to Ladyville Police that he beat her up in a jealous rage. But now it appears that Faber has taken the show on the road, and has given himself and Belize another black eye on the international scene.

The Belize Times was one of the first media houses to break the story of Faber’s detention and involvement in a situation in which two Henry County Schools were placed on ‘Hard Lockdown,’ a status usually precipitated by dire threat. Last week, Faber refused to comment when asked about it, stating vaguely that he was “waiting for a clarification document like that to come out because I have heard those

things. So, I have asked for the US Embassy and the State Department to issue something on that matter so that people can be assured that the Deputy Prime Minister was not in any kind of – that yeah.”

But this week, the man who wants leadership of the UDP and God forbid, leadership of the country did an abrupt about turn, admitting that it was him, and there was an international incident. “I called the schools to say I would be visiting. I was welcomed by the Principal. I wanted the schools to be aware that I was very much interested in their wellbeing. Upon arriving at the school on the day that was scheduled, I was greeted by the Police. I was held at gunpoint and arrested. I was detained for three hours. I later learned that there was a 911 call made to the Police claiming that I was going to the school to shoot. And in fact that I was a threat, according to the Henry County Sheriff’s Department. I was described by name and by features,” Faber stated on a morning show Wednesday.

Sources in the UDP claim that Faber is still not telling the whole truth, and that the 911 call was the result of a text

number of discrepancies in her box and she corrected those errors.

Flowers admitted that she did not witness Cumberbatch’s numerous alterations on the paperwork after she handed them over. She also admitted under questioning that the corrections made by her were only signed by her and she did not see the need for anyone else to initial the changes. Attorney Eamon Courtenay put to Flowers that the changes were made after the PUP disputed the results and they are simply mathematical corrections and the only way to check the accuracy of the figures was to do an actual recount of the ballots, which was not done. Flowers admitted a recount of the ballots was not done by her.

It is clear, through the statements on the stand, that persons put in place to preserve the integrity of elections fell down on the job, and by doing so altered the result of the elections. The Chief Justice will hear submissions on May 28th. It will be for the Chief Justice to decide if the discrepancies are enough to void the election. message sent from Faber to his exwife, the mother of his children. We are told that the terminology in the text, in typical Faber style, was abusive and may have included the line “I would kill for my kids,” or words similar to that. And that, our sources say, is what resulted in the 911 call.

Faber is a dead duck in politics.

It is little wonder that the Prime Minister now refuses to name whom he would wish as his successor. This is now international shame and disgrace, not only for Faber but also for the country.

SSB DEMANDS PAYMENT

Thursday, May 17, 2018 Former Mayor Darrell Bradley and former City Administrator Candice Miller openly and blatantly lied, without shame, when queried by the media about revelations that under their watch contributions towards Social Security had been withheld from employees, but not paid in to the SSB. Both Bradley and Miller claimed that any allegation about non-payment to SSB was a blatant lie, with Miller going further to state that all payments were made up to date.

In fact, Bradley was furious with one journalist who queried him about it, his eyes bulging even more than normal as he claimed that the Council under the UDP was run with integrity and accountability. It was a well-run Council, he said, based on transparency. He flatly denied that the Council owed any SSB payments.

But on Tuesday, May 15th, the Council received a nasty surprise in the form of a DEMAND LETTER from the SSB, claiming a payment for $34,230.80 which was outstanding for the period November-December 2017, when Darrell Bradley was Mayor and Candice Miller was City Administrator.

The letter, dated that same day and sent via email, warns that “An employer who fails or neglects to pay within the prescribed time any contribution which he/she is liable under this Ordinance to pay shall be guilty of an offence and be liable on Summary Conviction to a fine of not less than five hundred dollars.”

And while they may have been eminently patient when attempting to collect from a UDP-run Council, the SSB shows no such leniency in this instance, advising the Council that they have FIVE days from the date of the Demand Letter, May 15th, to pay or the matter may be taken to Court to recover the monies.

It seems that collecting payments from employees but not turning them in has been the modus operandi for UDP City and Town Councils. Readers will recall that just before Municipal Elections it was revealed that the San Pedro Town Council owed substantial monies to the SSB. It is incredible that just before elections, the Belize City Council under Darrell Bradley and Candice Miller felt that it was justified in spending over $130,000 of taxpayers’ monies on one concert which it dubbed a FREE concert, designed solely to attract votes. Yet that same Council decided not to pay in Social Security contributions for its workers. Shameless.

While PUP Mayor Bernard Wagner has not released an official comment on the matter, the Belize Times has been informed that he fully intends to make good on the debt owed by the previous Council to SSB, on the grounds that the current Council is responsible, and is not prepared to risk any impact on the benefits owed to the employees by the Social Security Board.

Thursday, 17 May 2018 Police have still not brought a charge of Murder against two persons whom they believe are involved in the brazen execution of American businessman Lamont Lipka. Lipka, who had resided on San Pedro for three years, was in his restaurant, Tropicana on Sunday night when a male person entered and shot him twice as he stood behind the cash register, then five more times as he lay on the ground.

Lipka, known affectionately as ‘Monty,’ was not known to be involved in the drug trade which has resulted in so many fatalities on the island, so the nature of his murder shocked his colleagues and friends. On Monday, Police stated that they had no motive in the murder, but there was some speculation that it may have been related to a Court case he had been involved in.

At around 10:00am Monday morning, Police conducted a search on John Carlos Hernandez, 18, a Belizean who

had rented a room at the Central Park Hotel. That search led to the discovery of seven live rounds of 9mm ammunition. Police also arrested Tracey Betancourt, present at the time of the search, and investigation revealed that she had rented the room for Hernandez. Both Hernandez and Betancourt were charged for Keeping Ammunition without a License.

But are the two incidents related? Police sources say they are, and they believe Hernandez was brought in as a hitman to kill the Texan, by Betancourt who is known to have gang affiliations through her former relationship with Paul Jex, murdered on San Pedro on January 23rd.

Barrow Announces Date of Departure Thursday, 17 May 2018 At a press conference held on Wednesday, Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced that by May, 2019, he will demit office so that a new captain can try to wrest the UDP ship off the reef where it has been firmly stuck. After giving a timeline for the leadership convention in May, he explained that “when there is a leadership election, during the last parliamentary term of the incumbent, the leader so elected becomes in fact in the language of the constitution, leader elect and does not become leader operationally until the House is dissolved and the date set for the general elections. Unless of course that incumbent leader sooner resigns. And I have every intention of in fact demitting office, ah, after the convention has been held and the new leader chosen.”

The timeline for the Prime Minister’s departure is not, we are told, welcomed by Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber. Sources close to Belmopan Minister John Saldivar say that at a senior-level UDP meeting recently, Faber had

asked the Prime Minister to go out to pasture sooner rather than later, so that the UDP could ‘heal.’ We are told that suggestion was met with outright refusal by the PM, supported by Saldivar whose political fortunes were recently resurrected. Saldivar, those sources say, is content to bide his time since controversy continues to surround the high-strung Faber, whose star has been fading and falling fast.

At the press conference, when asked who he would support as his successor, the Prime Minister enjoyed a moment of extreme mirth. At the Belize Times, we totally sympathize. The choices facing the UDP are enough to inspire uncontrollable laughter.

There is Faber, who was recently detained by the Sheriff’s Department in Atlanta after a 911 call…

John Saldivar, whose ties to con man and alleged kidnapper/killer William Danny Mason are the stuff of legend, and according to the Prime Minister, a third person, unnamed, who has expressed interest. With the motley crew in that Cabinet, perhaps it is Minister Boots Martinez who has stepped forward to offer himself.

he Belize City Council, since a new administration took office in March, has been caught in the grips of a concerted attack by the United Democratic Party. At no time in recent memory has a new administration come under such an attack just after taking office, and of course, it can be attributed to a major case of sour grapes. After elections, Prime Minister Dean Barrow stood on the podium and dismissed the loss in Belize City as if it were no more than a passing ache. But it is much more than that. So confident were the UDP that they would be returned to office, that none of the UDP Councillors bothered to prepare for departure. After elections Councillors scurried to clean out their desks. They could not, and still cannot fathom the fact that the residents of the city sent them packing in such an undignified fashion.

The loss in Belize City did much more than speak to the calibre of the candidates presented on the UDP slate or even the calibre of those on the PUP slate. What it did was reveal a glaring weakness in the Party that believed it controlled the city, totally and completely. There are powerful UDP Ministers in six of the ten constituencies in the city – among them the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister. They should have had the city on lockdown. They believed they did. Sedi Elrington was trounced in Pickstock. Boots Martinez was beaten in Port Loyola. And the UDP hold on the city disappeared, just like that. Mr. Barrow is an arrogant man – as arrogant or perhaps more so than any other member of his Cabinet. If you believe that he did not take the loss in Belize City very personally, you would be dead wrong.

The result has been an almost unnatural fixation on City Hall by some of those Councillors who still can’t accept the loss, and by UDP operatives who suddenly now have all the answers. It would be hilarious if it were not so annoying. It appears that the new Mayor cannot make a move without comment by the UDP peanut gallery. And the fake news has been unrelenting – like the UDP spreading reports that Mayor Bernard Wagner and his team would be punishing senior citizens by removing a discount afforded to them by law. As if any responsible Council would do something like that!

And then there has been the matter of the terminations of employment, for five employees and a contract officer, the former City Administrator. Of the persons let go, one has gone on the media to cry political victimization, while revealing in the next breath that he had entered his name to run on a UDP ticket in Port Loyola. Another is the brother of a former UDP City Councillor.

Another is the nephew of a former UDP City Councillor.

It was appalling to see the Deputy Prime Minister, Patrick Faber in the news condemning the terminations as political victimization. One has only to recall the names Hirian and Charles Good. Hirian Good was a school warden with four children who was let go by Faber without apology. In fact, Faber was on the news back then also, ironically defending the termination of persons who were not hired by the (back then) new UDP administration. Faber asked the reporter then if he was supposed to stand there and pretend it was not political. The Goods would later protest the termination, and Charles Good, a former BDF soldier, would die shortly after. The Deputy Prime Minister had no remorse then, but now he will stand up and condemn the City Council for a restructuring which inevitably will affect persons whose loyalty to the UDP trumps their loyalty to the office.

It is ironic, also, in the face of comments by no less than the leader of the UDP, Prime Minister Dean Barrow in his press conference post elections. He was asked point-blank if he would punish those Councils which were now controlled by the People’s United Party. With an arrogance which has become his trademark, Mr. Barrow quoted what he said was an old Jamaican proverb – “Pastor christen ih pikni first,” meaning simply that he would allocate money to Councils controlled by the UDP before he would do so to Councils controlled by the PUP. Another UDP Minister had put it another way once, without qualm or shame – UDP First, Belizeans Second, PUP Last.

It should be with no apology that municipal administrations are allowed to select the operational team with which it feels comfortable to fulfil its mandate.

Where Belize City and Corozal are concerned, this will NOT include terminating employees who have served well, professionally and with integrity. It will not include terminating employees in the so-called lower tier of service. But there are persons who would stay in office simply to undermine the current Councils – and there will be no place for them in the restructuring process.

VERDES DE PURA ENVIDIA

l Ayuntamiento de Belice, desde que una nueva administración asumió el cargo en marzo, ha quedado atrapado en las garras de ataques concertados del Partido Unido Democrático. En ningún momento en la memoria reciente una administración ha sufrido tanto ataque justo después de tomar el poder, y por supuesto, se puede atribuir a un caso importante de las uvas agrias de la envidia.

Después de las elecciones, el Primer Ministro Dean Barrow se paró en el podio y deshecho la pérdida en la ciudad de Belice como si no fuera más que un dolor sin mucha importancia. Pero es mucho más que eso. Tan seguros estaban los UDP que volverían a ganar que ninguno de los concejales del UDP se molestó en prepararse para la salida. Después de las elecciones los concejales corrieron a limpiar su escritorio. No podían y todavía no pueden entender el hecho del que los residentes de la ciudad los corrieran de una manera tan indigna.

La pérdida en la ciudad de Belice hizo mucho más que hablar del calibre de los candidatos presentados en la planilla de candidatos UDP o incluso el calibre de los de la planilla del PUP. Lo que hizo es que revelo una debilidad flagrante en el partido que creía que controlaba la ciudad, total y completamente. Hay ministros UDP poderosos en seis de los diez distritos electorales de la ciudad, entre ellos el Primer Ministro y el Viceprimer Ministro. Deberían de haber tenido la ciudad controlada. Ellos creían que la tenían. Sedi Elrington fue derrotado en Pickstock.

Boots Martinez fue derrotado en el Port Loyola. Y el dominio del UDP en la ciudad, desapareció. El Sr. Barrow es un hombre arrogante -tan arrogante o quizás más que cualquier otro miembro de su gabinete. Si usted cree que no tomo la pérdida en la ciudad de Belice muy personalmente, estaría usted muy equivocado.

El resultado ha sido una fijación casi anormal en el Ayuntamiento por parte de algunos de los concejales que todavía no pueden aceptar la pérdida, y por los agentes del UDP que de repente ahora tienen todas las respuestas. Sería divertidísimo si no fuera tan molesto. Parece que el nuevo alcalde no puede hacer un movimiento sin comentarios del gallinero del UDP. Y las noticias falsas han sido implacables - como el UDP difundiendo informes de que el alcalde Bernard Wagner y su equipo estarían castigando a las personas de la tercera edad mediante la eliminación de un descuento otorgado a ellos por ley. ¡Como si cualquier consejo responsable haría algo como eso!

Y luego ha habido el asunto de las terminaciones de empleo de cinco empleados y un oficial en contrato, la ex administradora de la ciudad. De las personas despedidas, uno ha ido a los medios a llorar victimización política, al mismo tiempo que revela que inscribió su nombre en la lista de candidatos UDP en Port Loyola. Otro es el hermano de un ex concejal UDP. Otro es el sobrino de un ex concejal UDP. Fue terrible ver al Viceprimer Ministro, Patrick Faber en las noticias condenando las terminaciones como victimización política. Uno sólo tiene que recordar los nombres de Hirian y Charles Good. Hirian Good fue un guardián escolar con cuatro hijos que fue despedido por Faber injustificadamente. De hecho, Faber apareció en los noticieros en ese entonces también, irónicamente defendía la terminación de las personas que no fueron contratadas por la (en ese entonces) nueva administración UDP. Faber le preguntó al reportero si se suponía que debería pararse allí y fingir que no era política. Los Goods más adelante protestaron la terminación, y Charles Good, un ex soldado BDF, moriría poco después. El Viceprimer Ministro no tuvo remordimiento entonces, pero ahora se pone de pie y condena al Ayuntamiento por la reestructuración que afectará inevitablemente a las personas, cuya lealtad al UDP supera su lealtad a su cargo público.

Es irónico, también, ante los comentarios de nada menos que el líder del UDP, el Primer Ministro Dean Barrow en su Conferencia de prensa post elecciones.

Le preguntaron sin rodeos si castigaría a esas Municipalidades que ahora están controladas por el Partido Unido del Pueblo. Con una prepotencia que se ha convertido en su marca registrada, el Sr. Barrow citó lo que dijo era un viejo proverbio jamaiquino - “Pastor Christen ih pikni first,” (El pastor bautiza a sus hijos primero) lo que significa simplemente que destinara dinero a municipalidades controladas por el UDP antes de que lo haga a ayuntamientos controlados por los concejos PUP. Otro ministro UDP, una vez lo puso de otra manera, sin reparo ni vergüenza dijo - los del UDP primero, los beliceños en segundo lugar, y los PUP de último.

No hay que disculparse de que se permita a las administraciones municipales seleccionar el equipo operativo con el que se sienten cómodos para cumplir su mandato. Donde se refiere a la ciudad de Belice y Corozal, esto NO incluirá la terminación de empleados que han servido bien, profesionalmente y con integridad.

NO incluirá terminación de empleados en el llamado nivel inferior de servicio.

Pero hay personas que se mantendrán en el cargo simplemente para socavar a los actuales concejos - y no habrá lugar para ellos en el proceso de reestructuración.

Sin disculpas.

BDF Builds a ‘Wall’ at Western Border Thursday, May 17, 2018 The Ministry of National Security announced, on the 14th of May, 2018 by way of a terse press release, that the BDF’s light engineers have been directed to assist the Border Management Agency at its facilities at the western border to “improve the fences and gates to ensure better control at that official crossing point.” The Ministry was guarded in its statement and did not give any reason for the sudden need to erect new fences and to institute other crowd control measures.

True to form, the Guatemalans who have made it a habit of occupying the so called “no man’s land” were none too pleased.

crossing due to Sedi’s appeasing ways. Border crossings are places where official interactions of nations take place; they are not and should never be treated as places for malingering citizens.

The Guatemalans have since 2008, under the Barrow regime, treated Belize’s border as some kind of administrative border rather than the international border that it is. Just last January, three armed Guatemalan soldiers came across into Belize and walked all the way into the terminal building with their firearms: a clear breach of our sovereignty and territorial integrity. We are sure that there is no way that the Guatemalans would behave this way at any of their border crossings with Mexico, Honduras or El Salvador.

The people of Belize were never told about the armed incursion into

Belize and it was not until two days later, by way of leaked footage, that the media got wind of the incident.

Three days after the incident and at the prompting of the media, Sedi finally commented on it. Even then, Sedi had, by his own admission, not been briefed on what was clearly a breach of our sovereignty and territorial integrity. The nonchalant approach to such incursions in the past has given the Guatemalans the feeling that this kind of behaviour is acceptable.

Sedi would later go on to justify the incursion as nothing more than a query by the Guatemalans into some incident that had apparently occurred the previous day. Although he did caution that Belizean authorities should not try that kind of incursion into Guatemala. You see he knows why. The Guatemalans would never tolerate an incursion

into their territory.

We suspect that there might be something afoot, why the instructions to the BDF. We suspect that there might be tensions between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Security about how to deal with Guatemala. It would appear that the latter has won and so the BDF has been instructed to assist the Border Management Agency to address the growing state of insecurity at the western border.

But before you get all fuzzy and think that the Barrow administration has somehow found some intestinal fortitude, the BDF will not be establishing a permanent presence at the crossing. We got that directly from the horse’s mouth.

In response to media questions about the way forward for the BDF at the western border, the Commander of the BDF incredibly said that ““We have never maintained a presence there and we never will.”

OPRAH!!

Oprah Winfrey keeps outdoing herself in her ability to deliver heartfelt and inspiring addresses to audiences who are often jaded and skeptical. On Friday, May 11, 2018 she delivered the Commencement Speech at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Earlier this year, in January to be exact, she spoke at the Golden Globe Awards, and her address was evidently such a knockout that it left attendees giving a standing ovation and calling for her to run for and become President of the United States. In today’s world we surely need leaders who people can believe in, and I feel sure that Americans and world citizens on a whole see in her not just a fabulous speechmaker, but also a role model and icon in whom we can really trust and place our best aspirations.

Oprah’s is one of the most amazing modern day rags to riches stories of success and inspiration.

I won’t repeat it here, but we can all go and review from whence she has come. Being one of the wealthiest persons in America, with a net worth of almost US$3 Billion (with a B) doesn’t hurt, but you can feel her passion and verve whenever she takes to the podium. You surely cannot fake her kind of intensity and wish to do all the good that she possibly can.

In her speech to the School of Communication and Journalism graduates last week she touched on ten main points of exhortation and advice that surely bear repeating not only for journalists and certainly not only for Americans, but also for all right-thinking citizens of the global community. I can only attempt to paraphrase them here, while naturally fully acknowledging her as the author of these beautiful pearls of practical and superb wisdom.

She told the graduates not only to tell the truth, but to BE the truth. She asked every graduate and listener in general to choose every single day to live and fully exude complete honesty. We have heard many, many times that “the truth shall make you free,” so this is not new, but she has placed this advice at the top of her list. Said she - the truth is our shield against corruption, fear, greed and despair, and it is always everyone’s saving grace.

Second on her list of advice is that we must always remain hopeful, and boy, do we need a dose of this in Belize and everywhere else right about now!! Gun violence, climate change and racism are front and center of her agenda.

She could have been speaking right here in Belize. I think with trepidation about the impending start of the hurricane season, in addition to being extremely concerned about crime and killings, which appear to be out of control. Of course, we cannot forget the racism that rears its ugly head, especially at this time of our increased focus on our unfriendly neighbour to the West.

Oprah says that hopefulness will bring opportunities, reform, acceptance, treatment, protection and the vaccine against cynicism that we all desperately need.

Third, Lady Oprah has listed that we must be good to everyone.

I won’t elaborate, but this one goes without saying if we are to live right. Fourth is a good one: VOTE!!

“Pay attention to what representatives are doing on your behalf. If their policies are at odds with your core beliefs, then you have the responsibility to send them packing,” she advised. Her fifth nugget of advice is Live Responsibly: make up your bed, aim high, pay your bills on time. I love it!! Sixth is that we have to be kind to children and older folks.

Seventh is one that I absolutely adore also. Lady Oprah says we should splurge on the right things, not liquor and drugs and fanciness, but on a good mattress (your back will thank you!), and good, wellmade shoes. Eighth, she advises us to be Upstanding, meaning do not confuse what is legal for what is moral, so that we should be principled and not try to slip through the loopholes that inevitably will be there.

Finally ninth and tenth of the book of wisdom according to Oprah: “your job is what you do, not who you are;” go to work even if at times you don’t feel like, and keep striving to be a better person.

Finally, BE YOURSELF. Don’t compare yourself to others. Wow!! I like Oprah, and would vote for her any day, but the important things are to emulate and heed, not to blindly follow-foot.

There’s great good out there, yes, even in Belize. We have to find it, and also put in our two cents.

On Puppies and Unicorns...

I remember once when I was working at Channel 5, I got so sick of murders and politics and bad news that I yearned for a nice, pleasant story on manatees.

Or on a pageant or something uncomplicated. Just something that didn’t involve blood and crying, scandals and treachery.

It just got to be too much. I know people tend to be hard on the media – and to be honest there are persons in the media who genuinely suck – but it’s not easy being immersed in negativity, like stories of children being molested and raped. It gets overwhelming.

I left Channel 5 and got into politics, which may not have been such a great idea. Politics, in the most pristine sense of the word, shouldn’t be inherently a bad thing. But here in Belize, thanks to crappy, crooked and stupid politicians, it’s become a bad word. And it’s not only those at the upper echelons of power, those fools that sit in Cabinet, but the people who follow them around to get a suck at the bubby.

I mean yes, I work for politicians and yes, I vote for the PUP traditionally, and yes maybe many years ago I was a naively rabid supporter. But I’m pretty sure in my blindest moments I wasn’t as ridiculous as some of the specimens who follow the UDP so blindly.

Anyway my point is that I’m pretty much overwhelmed again. I’ve been facing personal struggles and professional struggles and I’m tired. And because I’m so tired, I simply can’t deal with bullshit the way I used to. There was a time when I pretty much spent all day on Facebook arguing some crap or the other with some UDP bubby-sucker or the other. Hell, I remember lying in bed sometimes close to midnight getting cursed out on social media and giving as good as I got. I usually gave better than I got, if I do say so myself.

I just allowed myself to get caught up in the sleaze and slime. I played in the mud with the pigs, and although I don’t generally like to get dirty, I’m pretty good at it.

And I am – WAS – passionate about my politics.

I’ve been changing my life, trying to focus more on the important things – God and family and the few friends that are in for the long haul. I don’t drink anymore and I’m exercising, eating healthy. I struggle with depression so I’ve been working on easing all the negativity out of my life. Work in progress, but it’s a journey. I’ve made the decision that I’m going to be focusing on cute puppies and pink unicorns covered in glitter. I’m going to go through life imagining myself lying naked in a field of flowers. Okay maybe that last one was a bit too much. Bottom line is no more negativity.

You reading this probably have no idea how much of a superhuman effort it has been to restrain myself from commenting on posts these days.

Herculean effort, even. Like recently, the Belize City Council has been attacked left, right and center by the UDP, led by former CitCo PR man (former Guardian reporter of sorts) Shane D. Williams. I swear this guy seems to have his nose stuck firmly up Mayor Wagner’s ass parts. I’ve wanted to comment so bad because most of the stuff he posts is absolutely, completely ridiculous. But I restrain myself. At one point, after his 176th post attacking the Council, I wondered if he had a crush on the Mayor and this was his way of getting attention. Maybe unrequited love? And he is not alone. Whenever he posts he is joined by the usual suspects, including Oj Elrington and FORMER City Council Dean Samuels, who are all too happy to join in the hilarity.

What is wrong with these people?

I don’t have a problem with constructive criticism. I don’t have a problem with asking the tough questions.

I don’t even have a problem with the unrelenting scrutiny. That is all well and good. It’ll serve to keep the sitting Council honest and accountable if at any time they chose to attempt to walk in the path carved by those who went before them. But I swear, the stupidity of these attacks and the inane commentary gives me hiccups. And I hate hiccups.

Okay see, the old Mike would have said all these things out loud.

But this is the new Mike. I’m not into mudslinging anymore. It’s all puppies and unicorns for me. And fields of flowers with me prancing naked. I’m a changed man. I swear.

This past weekend the Orange Walk Town Council hosted the mothers of Orange Walk to a fabulous Mother’s Day event.

We shared a Mass together as one family and enjoyed a concert with traditional marimba music. It was an amazing time, and while the mothers were the stars of the show, and deservedly so – it was a great time for us at the Council too. Sometimes we get so caught up in the work and the daily stress of making ends meet that we lose sight of the fun aspect of serving our people. I’ve always believed that the community of Orange Walk is like one big family, and families need to always have good times together.

I point that out because there are always mischief-makers in every community, especially one as politically charged as Orange Walk. And some of them are taking great fun in painting a picture of disunity in our Council since I have decided to enter my name in the ring to represent the people of Orange Walk East. There is no disunity in the Orange Walk Town Council. We continue to serve our people well. We continue to carry out the comprehensive works programs which have made us the most progressive Council in the country. We operate with integrity always. We handle the people’s money responsible and we do so without any scandals or controversies. Of that, we are very proud. We are a team which has the people of Orange Walk at heart, and that will not change.

The people recognize that, and they support us.

I have continued to walk the streets of Orange Walk East every single day, meeting residents and listening to their concerns.

Good representation is serious business. It starts with the community, because if we don’t get input from the people then all we are doing is guessing. Working for the people can never be guess-work. It takes planning and strategy and responsible management. It is what we have done at the Council and it is what I intend to bring to Orange Walk East if given the opportunity to serve.

The people of the East have seen the results of careless rep-

resentation by the UDP’s Elodio Aragon Jr. who has used his time in office certainly to improve his status and financial well-being while residents have received none of the attention and focus which he promised prior to 2015.

He has been an abject failure – not even able to deliver on any of the numerous promises he made. And the people are ready to get him out – that is very clear.

From the results of the municipal elections recently, even Aragon must have known that his political career is done even before it really started.

And now it is up to us to get it right for the people. And that starts even before the Convention. I have committed to running a clean campaign based on issues. I have stated time and time again that Josue Carballo is a long-time colleague and a longtime friend. We have worked together at the Council for years.

We respect each other, and respect the ambition which drives each of us. We have both been on the ground working, and it is the people of Orange Walk East who will ultimately decide who they believe will best represent them.

It is as simple as that.

I take this opportunity to send out that same message of unity and respect across the country. The People’s United Party is a family which should be held together by a genuine intent to serve our people. And it should be no problem for qualified, capable individuals to offer themselves for office. It should be an honourable thing. The Party has a vetting committee which decides if the application will be accepted, and then it is off to convention day where the people choose. That is how it should be. But we can never lose sight of the fact that our people have been suffering under the United Democratic Party, and there is a nationwide call for change, responsible representation and good governance. We need to respect ourselves, each other and the people we serve.

Let us be led, always, by principles of respect, integrity, hardwork and service. That is what the people are demanding and that is what we must give to them.

WHY SUSTAINABLE ORGANIC FARMS ARE NOT EXTENSIVE IN BELIZE?

“To forget how to dig the earth and to tend the soil is to forget ourselves”. –Mahatma Gandhi– There is a growing need in the world for the development of agricultural production techniques which do not pollute air, water and soil and reduce the negative effects of erosion, soil salinity, diseases and pests.

Organic farming is an environmentally-friendly production method which aims to respond to this need. Organic farming is a controlled and certified way of agricultural production which does not harm human health and an environment and which does not include the use of chemicals. Organic farming aims to protect the life-sustaining resources and natural life by maintaining the natural balance.

Prince Charles stated that “It is vitally important that we can continue to say, with absolute conviction, that organic farming delivers the highest quality, best-tasting food, produced without artificial chemicals or genetic modification, and with respect for animal welfare and the environment while helping to maintain the landscape and rural communities.”

Consumers sometimes say that they support a sustainable environment, but the reality is that when these individuals go to make a purchase they generally choose cheaper products, even if these are not more environmentally sustainable than more expensive options.

This apparent contradiction is one of the most difficult challenges that food companies are facing today: how to meet customers green expectations with investments in sustainability programs - in the knowledge that those same customers will probably shun products that carry a green premium in favor of cheaper alternatives.

Of course, there are exceptions.

Companies are fiercely devoted to high standards of sustainability and have customer bases that share these principles. The buying habits of these consumers reflect their passion for green. By and large, however, consumers generally pay verbal homage to the sustainable environment cause yet vote the other way with their wallets.

And it’s not just price that drives these buying decisions; convenience is another important factor. For example, individuals order products online even when these purchases have a large carbon footprint owing to activities such as truck deliveries that generate greenhouse gas emissions, as well as wasteful packaging. The convenience of the online channel is extremely compelling.

The way consumers perceive products also affects their buying decisions. In general, individuals’ levels of concern can be positioned along a “in me – on me – around me” scale.

People are most concerned about products they ingest, such as food.

Next comes product they use on their bodies, such as cosmetics. The level of concern declines with products that impact the environment around them. The amount of information available on products and the accessibility of that information also shapes consumers’ perceptual maps.

Search attributes are obvious tangible properties; a blue versus a red car, for instance. Experience attributes such as taste can be verified after a purchase. Intrinsic credence attributes such as the level of noxious emissions generated by a car can only be verified after the purchase using specialized expertise or equipment.

Hidden credence attributes can’t be verified by the consumer.

Another complication is the varying effectiveness of green labels that attest to a product’s environmental credence. Attributes such as the trustworthiness or level of clarity of a label influence its effectiveness. The sheer

number of labels can confuse consumers.

When consumers find it difficult to distinguish between a high-quality product and an inferior one, they will not pay extra when a seller argues that their product is superior, they will only pay for average products. The result is that sellers of superior products leave the market and the quality deteriorates over time until the market collapses.

It follows that if consumers can’t judge the degree to which a product is sustainable, they will not pay for “responsible” products.

Given these ambiguities, it makes perfect sense for companies to do the minimum needed to burnish their sustainability credentials.

Look behind many of the triumphant statements in press releases, and you will find projects that are much more modest than the promotional material suggests.

Again, there are exceptions. Outside of such win-wins, until consumers undergo a shift in mindset and start opting for green products regardless of the price or relative convenience of these purchases, companies will put minimal effort into sustainability programs.

A change in behavior could be prompted by regulations designed to make green purchases more attractive.

But, as long as consumers are not “on board” such actions are authoritarian and run counter to the democratic processes that underpin capitalism.

It is possible that attitudes will change over time. Studies indicate that younger demographic groups are more supportive of environmental causes than their older peers. Younger consumers are more likely to base their buying decisions on the environmental reputations of the companies they patronize. However, history shows that as individuals get older and accumulate more wealth, they tend to drift rightwards politically, and more cost-conscious.

There are several limitations that don’t allow the extensive adoption of sustainable organic farms in Belize and

worldwide. Everyone wants food without any pesticides but the main reasons for the low rate of adoption are the prohibitive prices and the confusion regarding various certification about organic products.

The main reason for the high prices of organic products is skewed demand and supply along with increased labor cost and low scale of organic farming, but large part of the profit benefits only the retailers and a very low amount gets passed on to the farmers, resulting in a low motivation for farmers to adopt and invest in the organic farming along with the lower level of organic farming education. So for the customer low prices with reliability will remain the preference, for which new business models need to be developed so that the farmers can get the real benefits and not the third party, at the same time filling the customer demand at a low price and in a reliable way.

It is high time that we prioritize agricultural development and work together developing Organic Farm Products to tackle the root causes of hunger and poverty. If we get this right, Belize will not just be able to feed itself, but to contribute to regional food and nutrition security, and therefore more stability throughout the Central America and the Caribbean.

The reasons to involve in sustainable organic practices are many.

They, of course, provide locally produced food, which cuts down on our global food miles and does good things for the planet. They convert our lawns into productive, money-saving entities, as opposed to weekend worksites that yield nothing more than grass clippings. And, it’s worth stating that organic practices are beautiful, with a bevy of colorful flowers and fruits & veggies to enjoy.

In many ways, sustainable organic practices are what seem to be missing from many of our lives, an absent link in our relationship with our food, with our planet, and even with the cosmos (planting by the moon and all that). Organic practices also makes a lot of sense for those of us trying to lead healthy lives. In addition to being good for the planet, it’s good for our bodies, and good for our minds.

Time will tell. Meanwhile, companies will continue to tread the line between their customers’ green aspirations and real-world buying behavior.

¿CÓMO VENEZUELA CAYÓ EN LA RUINA?

Venezuela pasó de zambullirse en petrodólares a una de sus peores crisis económicas durante el gobierno de Nicolás Maduro, quien buscará su reelección en los comicios de este domingo.

El boom: Entre el 2004 y el 2015, este país con mayores reservas de crudo recibió unos US$750 mil millones de la bonanza más larga en un siglo de explotación petrolera.

Mientras acentuaba la dependencia del oro negro -fuente de 96 por ciento de sus ingresos-, el gobierno de Hugo Chávez (1999-2013) aprovechó el boom para financiarse a bajo costo.

Emitió unos US$62 mil millones en bonos soberanos y de la petrolera PDVSA, según la consultora Ecoanalítica, y recibió préstamos de China y Rusia. La deuda externa se quintuplicó hasta US$150 mil millones .

Las reservas internacionales llegaron a 42 mil 300 millones en el 2008. Hoy son una cuarta parte.

El gasto público también se disparó, y en el 2012 hubo un déficit de 15.6 por ciento del PIB pese a que el barril de petróleo alcanzó una media récord de US$103.42.

Ese déficit “equivalía al de Grecia en su peor momento”, dijo Orlando Ochoa, economista de la Universidad de Oxford.

Estado omnipresente Al tiempo, el gobierno socialista estatizó sectores como el del cemento y acero y expropió cientos de empresas.

Desde el 2003 monopoliza las divisas que vende a tasas que sobrevaloran el bolívar e impuso un control de precios que, con las expropiaciones e importaciones subsidiadas, minó la industria.

“Se indujo al sector privado a reemplazar producción por importaciones baratas”, comentó Ochoa.

El empresariado abastece hoy 20 por ciento del consumo frente a 70 por ciento en el 2008, según Fedeagro.

El control cambiario derivó en corrupción, con importaciones fantasma, sobrefacturación y desvío de dólares al mercado negro, donde las cotizaciones multiplican por 12 la oficial.

Se añaden presuntos abusos con gastos reservados. Según Jorge Giordani, gurú económico de Chávez, US$300 mil millones se malversaron en la última década.

Las estatizaciones menguaron varias empresas y terminaron en litigios como el de la petrolera ConocoPhillips, que tomó activos de Venezuela en el Caribe para cobrarse US$2 mil millones de dólares.

El gobierno defiende que entre 1999 y el 2014 destinó 718 mil millones a programas sociales.

Pero el manejo fiscal es desordenado, con emisión de dinero para tapar un agujero de 15 por ciento a 20 por ciento del PIB en promedio desde el 2013, según Humberto García, presidente de la Academia

La financiación del déficit y la disparada del “dólar negro” por la sequía de divisas generaron una hiperinflación que según el FMI llegará a 13 mil 864.6 por ciento este año.

para medio 2.2 libras de carne- y provocó escasez de billetes al rezagar al cono monetario. Uno nuevo, con tres ceros menos, circulará desde junio.

El PIB se contrajo 45 por ciento desde el 2013, según el FMI, pasando de US$400 mil millones a 120 mil millones. “Indicadores de un país en guerra”, según Asdrúbal Oliveros, de Ecoanalítica.

Futuro sombrío Por pagos atrasados de deuda, Venezuela y PDVSA fueron declarados en default parcial en el 2017, con compromisos para el próximo cuatrienio por US$10 mil millones anuales.

Maduro, quien se dice víctima de “una guerra económica”, anunció una renegociación, pero desde agosto Washington prohíbe a los estadounidenses negociar nueva deuda venezolana.

Un embargo sería inminente, advierte Alejandro Grisanti, de Ecoanalítica, quien prevé que la producción de crudo caería a 1.2 millones de barriles diarios a fines del 2018.

Estados Unidos asoma un embargo petrolero, escenario catastrófico pues un tercio de la producción va allí y representa 75 por ciento del flujo de caja.

Nicaragua cumple hoy 28 días de crisis, que han dejado entre 54 y 65 muertos, como producto de multitudinarias manifestaciones a favor y en contra del

presidente del país, Daniel Ortega, que iniciaron con protestas en contra de unas reformas a la seguridad social y que continuaron debido a las víctimas mortales de los actos represivos.

Está previsto que este miércoles comience un diálogo nacional con la mediación de los obispos, que han reconocido que ese proceso comenzará en circunstancias “que no son las más óptimas” puesto que continúa la violencia en las calles contra los manifestantes.

CROSSING THE LINE

Belizeans became aware of the shooting of the home of Belmopan Mayor Khalid Belisle on the Tuesday evening news. Apparently eight shots were fired sometime after 10 pm, some of which hit the front wall of his home, while a few hit a car parked in front of his yard. Speculation abounds as to who would do this and why, but more importantly and most concerning is that someone out there in society has the audacity to attack the home of an elected official with such impunity. Someone is sending a message. Is this what we have become in this tiny nation, where people feel free to grab a gun and shoot at an elected community leader? Have we crossed the line? According to Channel 5 news, this is the second time such an incident has occurred, where an elected official’s home was targeted, the other one being the home of Hon. Said Musa in 2013.

As we witness the daily news, one cannot but conclude that crime is much more pervasive than it was a few years ago.

Everyone knows someone who has been affected by crime, be it robbery, theft, gun injury or even murder. There are children in Belize City who can vividly describe a gunshot murder scene, and in some cases more than one. Imagine that being a casual part of your life. One day, will the victims lying on the ground be our elected officials?

Have we crossed the line?

Our society has deteriorated so much that it seems we can no longer agreeably disagree, especially in the political arena.

A quick scan of the social media world of Facebook will reveal how intolerant, hateful and reckless we have become towards each other. We see members of the same party viciously attacking each other, often with vile and slanderous posts. We see members of opposing parties threatening each other, defending their party at any cost.

We see new people, new fac-

es offering themselves for political office being attacked by Facebook pitbulls. Isn’t that what we have been clamoring for in this nation, new faces of leadership? Or is it just a lip service? How discouraging it must be to the brave individuals who want to be the difference, having your character being assaulted for wanting to serve your country. Women in particular tend to avoid these scenarios and therefore are

often not interested to meddle in politics. Some will say that is politics. No! That is the way we have made politics in Belize. It does not have to be this way.

We used to have statesmen leading this nation. What happened? Have we crossed the line?

It is no wonder, then, that with the combined low rate of conviction, high levels of corruption, our reckless behavior and attitude towards each other, and the political mudslinging both internally and across party lines, the phantom person out there would have the gall to simply walk up to the Mayor’s home to risk damage to property and loss of life. This is dead serious. Have we crossed the line? Yes we have. There is indi-

vidual and collective responsibility to our reclaim our society.

It begins with recognizing your personal role in making a positive difference right within your own circle. Are YOU ready to cross that line?

UDP ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL POSITION – YES TO THE ICJ Thursday, 17 May 2018 At a press conference held in Belize City yesterday, Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced that the “official position of the Cabinet is that a YES Vote ought to be recommended to the people of Belize.”

While he would not say which of his Ministers had voted YES and which had voted NO, the wily Barrow asserted that a majority of the Ministers would be going out into their constituencies to convince residents to vote yes to the ICJ. As support for the Cabinet’s decision, Barrow says that he is certain that the case is so watertight that we could never suffer any loss as a result of the ICJ hearing.

Of course, while that is consolation to the Prime Minister who has always been convinced of his own greatness, it is cold comfort to Belizeans who have paid hundreds of millions in litigation losses, in cases where Mr. Barrow also appeared just as overwhelmingly confident. To date, while taxpayers bear the brunt of that unsubstantiated arrogance, close associates and family members of PM Barrow have become very, very rich. The truth is that the nation has wound up losing practically all of the legal battles which the Prime Minister has been so certain were ironclad victories.

Mr. Barrow does not inspire the confidence he did years and hundreds of millions of dollars ago. And his Cabinet has shown itself to be so inept and corrupt and greedy that the people simply do not trust them.

There are many Belizeans who agree that the ICJ, at some point, may be the only option to solve the issue. But those Belizeans will tell you clearly that they simply do not trust going to the ICJ now, with the UDP and Sedi Elrington at the helm and with the relationship with Guatemala where it is.

In very recent years, Guatemala has been allowed to aggress Belize

and Belizeans to the point where our very territory has been seized, particularly in the Sarstoon. But it has gotten worse. Under the UDP, an entire boatload of Belizeans were kidnapped by Guatemalans in Belizean territory and taken to Livingston. And our government allowed this to happen.

The nation cannot be surprised by the position of the UDP where the ICJ is concerned. The UDP has done everything but sign a deed giving Belize to Guatemala. In the days ahead the nation will see if the Prime Minister keeps his word when he claimed at Wednesday’s press conference that the education campaign will be about giving the facts, and not persuading Belizeans to vote yes. Knowing Mr. Barrow, is it easy to disbelieve his claim.
