BELMOPAN LAND SCAM
How much does a lot cost in the City of Belmopan? Speculate! Answer: One Grand. Yes! 1000 Belize Dollars is what a parcel of land costs in Khalid and Saldivar’s Grand Belmopan Scheme of either major desperation or malice. The UDP has skipped to the other side of the corruption spectrum. They have warped from BTL/Petrocaribe, each worth half a billion, swoosh down to little buffer zones and ‘indispensable’ streets for 1000 dollars a lot as fast as they can survey it and identify those special pockets?

BELMOPAN LAND SCAM
Continued from page 1 Why do they need this money oh so fervently? Is there an election coming up? Which? Does Barrow and Faber agree to this liquidation? When last did you observe hungry dogs wolf down their food, then lick the aluminum dish till ‘no moh no moh’? Remember such canine anxiousness to lick up every last spot? The UDP is now is at this licking stage and their eyes are blood shot in increasing levels of anxiety. The Headless Chicken Syndrome has set in and the UDP can only travel around the world in an attempt to run from reality. As their flight returns depression sets in. In Saldivar and Khalid’s World there people will think that they are selling off invented lots for the good of the Belmopan people. People will be happy once pay is in their bank accounts. But what the people are not seeing is the crux of this iceberg. Who believes that they are REALLY charging ONLY $1000 dollars for these prime pieces of land? Even UDP’s that were made to pay more are truly upset. This Belmopan Scheme shows that lessons were well learned from their Sanctuary Bay Enterprise scam. This is home cooked and looks and feels legit. The following is a little legalese from our National Lands Act. (3) All reserves shall be notified in three successive issues of the Gazette and in one issue of a local newspaper and set forth on plans in the office of the Commissioner. (4) All dereservations of reserves shall be notified in three consecutive issues of the Gazette and in one issue of a local newspaper. 7. The Minister may grant leases of national lands on such terms and conditions as he thinks fit and may likewise renew leases on such terms and for such periods as to him may seem proper.
Was that all followed? The UDP has proven that they will never investigate themselves and if they do, they will sit on the report, a la, Immigration Report by the Senate Select Committee chaired by Senator Aldo Salazar. The documents along with this story will show you the proof that 1000 bucks is officially what the government is getting for each lot offered in name scheme. Belizeans who believe this are definitely in the UDP sphere and blind. You will see names like Hulse and FuSheny which is not the point. The point is HOW did they get to qualify for this land? But if you can see all the sizzling in this upgraded version of a hotbed of corruption then you are ready to move Belize in a new direction. The UDP keeps inventing mini-Sanctuary Bay Enterprises. These are popping up all over the country.

FEATHER
ictures surfaced recently of the past Deputy Prime Minister and Ex Minister of Lands, Gapi Vega. It seems then that he might be “imagining the possibilities” of returning to Cabinet as the Minister of Immigration. Belizeans are known to make light of even the worst situations in order to render them more bearable, but this just might be the feather that breaks that Old Red Camel’s bad back. It is a given that for an economy to grow and its people prosper, a country must distribute its wealth equitably. The healthier the economy, the less income disparity must exist among its members. One of the ways in which our Father of the Nation Rt. Hon. George Cadle Price and the PUP achieved these just causes and empowered Belizeans was through massive land redistribution programs. However those days are gone, the current GOB redistributes land in their usual “UDP first, Belizeans second” policy. The records show that during Hon Gapi’s term as Minister of Lands his close family and friends amassed land holdings in truly obscene quantities and in record processing times. It was too much to hope that the new and current Minister of Lands, Hon. Hugo Patt would operate differently. While everywhere in the North we witness pop-up Lands offices to deal with Lands issues, the occurrence of fly by night, one-stop Lands shops are the brain child of Minister Patt. This pilot project worked wonders for him in his own division and also helped to secure wins during the village council elections for his close allies. However, there has been no official word from Patt’s Ministry on the Hilltop issue. The Belmopan City Council said the land was valued at five hundred and three hundred thousand, and sold for just four hundred thousand dollars. Hilltop is about 1.5 acres of prime real estate in Belmopan. This 1.5 could yield at least 12 regular sized house lots. Recently, and with the blessings of the Ministry of Lands the Belmopan City Council chopped up some reserve land, ear marked for a road, and sold it for one thousand dollars each. One thousand dollars is the social rate charged to low income families in need of a house lot. Hilltop then is of comparable value and by this logic either Hilltop should have been sold for about twelve thousand dollars or the road reserve was short changed by several hundred thousand dollars. Land is one of four factors of production. Land is finite and thus limited, it determines agricultural production and industrial progress and prosperity. Land maintains the ecological balance and determines total production of a country and influences economic growth and trade. Land ownership in Belize for many signifies the only way to build home equity and to create wealth and improve their standard of living for their families and themselves. This is the reason that granting lots at social rates is important for those Belizeans who would not otherwise have a chance to own land. Over time developed land increases in value and can be used as collateral for a variety of investments which raises the standards of living and collectively helps to drive the economy forward. The recent distribution of lots in Belmopan is less about development of land and even less about investment in our people. It is all about the using of government owned assets as tokens to appease disgruntled party affiliates to secure the next general election. Let us not forget the UDP “Quitar” policy, where lease land contracts were arbitrarily cancelled and redistributed to party cronies. The importance and value of land cannot be denied, there cannot be a double standard for pricing in the same zone. Belizean lands must not be proffered as party favours on the whims of feeble minded politicians. Basta!

¡Basta!

All Farmers in Belize in Dire Straits The news broke last night that the Citrus Grower Association cannot give the farmers even basic services. It would not be a surprise to know that the Prime Minister is of no help. So 269 members strong will suffer from lack of technical services. The citrus greening disease is being blamed for being cash strapped but the problem goes well beyond what is taking place in the orchards. On another front and earlier this year, the cane farmers of the northern districts were shell-

Dear Editor, I come to you with a deep concern for me and my family’s future. I am just 42 years old so I know that there is much that can change for me and, of course, my fellow volunteers. As a volunteer we get four-year contracts and nothing else. We do the necessary little work for the BDF camp and I am grateful. I understand also that we should only be working for disasters and short periods of time which can only be extended by the Governor General. Again, I am grateful for that we do work consistently. But at 55, I have seen how co-workers are just released. That is sad. Not even a Social Security contribution is made to our name. So we would be looking to no benefits. I know that this has been in place for many, many years but in 2019 it should not be the case. I am here to plead to the PUP that when you are in government after the next elections to look to change this for us. We volunteers will form a group and seek to meet with Party Leader Briceño who we have hope in. This present government has been blind and dead to us Thank You Belize Times for listening and we will take it from here. Signed BDF Volunteer

Prices for food that is based on Belizean produce has definitely taken a hit and experienced higher levels. The drought is seen to be blamed but a lot is definitely on the backs of a government that is visionless and has given up on Belize. All farmers are in dire need of direct injection of capital. This is a grave issue.

We Love You Gapi I swear you people can’t seem to grasp the concept of ‘forgive and forget.’ Yes, we know that Gapi ‘misappropriated’ thousands of acres of prime land and gave it out to his family members. Yes, we know that he used his power to very shadily hold on to about 1600 acres of prime property in Carmelita. Yes, we know he gave his son $400,000 of taxpayer dollars which we will never get back. We know that he’s done some terrible things and we know he has some terrible friends in the north. But Gapi deserves love too. That’s why we at the Belize Times are in full support of him coming back into politics. Please come back, Gapi, so that the people of Orange Walk North can show you how they really feel about you. This week a picture of Gapi at the Immigration office went viral, and a lot of people were upset. Bunch of haters. You keep doing what you’re doing, Gapi. You keep campaigning and you make sure that when elections are called, you’re back in Orange Walk North. Monchi and the people of that division are planning a big surprise party for you. Taiwan Alert We at the Belize Times were informed that the Government of Taiwan was on high alert recently as Minister Edmond Castro went visiting once again. The last time he was in Taiwan there was full scale panic and Castro had to be shipped back to Belize as persona non grata after he reportedly fondled the chaperone assigned to him. Castro’s explanation was that the chaperone must have misunderstood, or that there was some miscommunication. This time the Taiwan government were taking no chances. We are told that they refused to assign Castro a chaperone, and instead he was forced to bunk down with Roosevelt Blades, who was also on the junket. We’re not sure if any fondling happened in that room, but if there was, it was probably consensual. After all, Castro has a reputation for hitting on any man, woman or child in the vicinity. But on the bright side, at least no chaperones were hurt on this trip. Gibberish Here at the Times, we don’t usually pay attention to nonsense much, especially the nonsense coming from UDP headquarters on Belchina, but we’ve been told there’s a new show coming out of Wave featuring the drunken Jehovah Witness wannabe and some unknown person – somebody said her name is Paula Eck, or something like that. Anyway, there is some godawful noise coming out of there weekdays which we are told they are calling a Spanish talkshow. What an insult that is to the Hispanic community. We figure Fonso figured all that time in barrooms with young Spanish boys gave him the ability to speak the language. If we could borrow a phrase from the saintly PM – Fuh God’s Sake STOP IT. We’d like to suggest that for the sake of the eight people who listen to Wave’s morning show, they should cease immediately. And if that isn’t an option, maybe Fonso could go to the same Spanish class which that same saintly PM goes whenever he has to learn to insert a Spanish phrase into a speech. Cause they are bad. Really bad.

THE BELIZE TIMES
No sense of Security or peace of mind!
By: Omar Silva Where are we as a law-abiding society, and where are we heading with all this ridiculous lawlessness before our very eyes? Each time we believe that things are so out of control and that we’ve seen it all, we are shocked in disbelief by another level and in a turn of events for the worst. Now, I believe that crime has become the thorn in the side of every citizen and is now the order of the day, no one, not even our women/youth/seniors are safe anymore. Our loved ones have become target for the criminal psychopaths and we must now go the extra mile to know the whereabouts of our children; we cannot depend on their socalled friends anymore. We have all seen how crime has developed and has transcended from bad enough to worst over the last decade. For the most part, we have showed no responsiveness for the social tragedies around us. In most cases, we are only a part of the outcry when tragedy hits close to home. Apart from that, only when our Facebook warriors make it an issue that creates awareness enough to build a public opinion. The Police for their part, believe that they are complying with society when they spoon feed limited sketchy information on the sad state of the criminal reality in Belize and sadly, that is where it all ends. With the recent occurrences against our children and youth, we must never again take anything for granted. We must take every step and measure to protect our children lives and property and cannot expect the police to oversee and provide that sense of public safety, with security for all. Time is not on our side and as a family unit we must find better ways to communicate with our loved ones and practice how to track
them down in the event they go out on the town for entertainment purposes. Over the last eleven years or so, all hell broke loose when ineptitude took over the mantle of government. During this period, crime ratcheted up to a whole new level and just like government, the police high command who are clueless without a national crime fighting strategy only react to the everyday tragedies without answers. Prior to 2008, the police man strength stood at 1200 elements, today we have seen an increase by almost 1000 more men and that makes it around 2200 policemen. The number of patrol vehicles has also increased considerably to the equivalent of 1 vehicle to every 20 elements. They have received police gear from both the United States and Taiwan but remain without serious training especially in areas like rules of engagement in the use of firearms; procedures and methodologies to upgrade analytical fact-finding techniques in their investigations that should render a higher conviction rate than the 30% they are jammed with. The department have more paramilitary units including the GSU than ever before which seem to be at the behest of those in government. We note Police booths, Check Points and mobile patrols in every direction of the old capital but still with continuous armed robberies and murders many times not far away from their location. Considering all the added police gear, equipment and man power, it is logical and reasonable to sum up that there is a lack of government commitment. With the present Police Commissioner, we see nothing new, it is the same ole lack of crime fighting strategy with no new operational procedure that would show a drastic reduction in the real violent situation citizens are subjected to since 2019 started. The end result of good police investigations is played out and tested in court with positive conviction rate but
it is a damn shame to see the conviction rate plummet because of contaminated investigations due to malpractice in procedures and methodologies. What seems more disgusting is seeing the police department finding recourses to ensure the corporate citizens get their police escorts as is evident with police motorcyclists behind delivery trucks, at gas stations and many nightclubs across the nation. Are they more special? Are they more Belizean? There is no longer any solid public confidence in the Police department because of the perception of infiltrated rogues within. The people want to have a Police department that diligently provide acceptable levels of public safety that in itself gives that

UDP INFAMY The Tacos Debacle Another INFAMY entrenched deep into the crust of the Annals of UDP history is the Corozal Bay 2015 splurging of PetroCaribe dollars on Pibil Tacos and a general high feeling right off the back of taxpayers. A perpetually sickening feeling is Faber shrugging off the entire sordid affair as deserved by supposedly only some members of the Collet constituency and no one else in Belize. We all know now who is paying all the $450 million of PetroCaribe dollars spent by the UDP in order to give Barrow a third term of government just 7.5 years after hypnotizing some Belizeans with documented malarkey. Faber’s virtual orgy at the Corozal Bay and his distasteful interview is only a microcosm of his UDP Government’s disdain for the rule of law. They misspent left, right and center and their fraudulent utterance of pro-poverty was only that—designed to keep Belizean people poor. Even new London bridges are not affordable. The UDP does not have any desire to traverse across them to meet the people. The UDP feel that the issuing of some tacos is all people deserve. In their defense during the ICJ referendum process, the UDP
government lawyer dismissed tacos as something simple and easy to understand. Mistaken... Tacos are a product of the investment of entire families and in OW it a literally the way of life for many. Not anyone can do a great Taco. Also, when the economy hurts it shows in the Tacos— much like how Antarctica shows climate change. UDP’s 2019 drought is definitely not their fault. What they are guilty of is zero foresight, disgusting incompetence and, in the opinions of many, maybe, criminally negligence in addressing the effects as early as a government should. Don’t tell us corn is in dire straits after the PUP says so. STOP SLEEPING at the wheel. Now the snowball effect of higher corn prices can strain pockets and lives altogether. How can you serve 2 tacos for a dollar—that can only be UDP infamy? GST on top burns more than pepper. Less meat in the tacos kills the taste, what is the UDP doing? They are writing off taxes for land owners. The same for a special UDP. All this is anti-Belizean and anti the will of the people.
MURDEROUS HOLIDAY WEEKEND LEAVES 4 DEAD October 17, 2019 11:00 AM Juan De La Cruz Carrias Chopped to Death This past weekend left four families mourning the loss of their loved ones after their lives were mercilessly cut short. The first murder happened on Thursday October 10, 2019, in San Jose Succotz Village, Cayo. Police say the main suspect believed to be responsible for the death of Juan De La Cruz Carrias, 56 year old, may have absconded to his neighboring home country Guatemala. Carrias’s body was discovered in a small wooden house located in the village. The motive for the fatal chopping is not known at this time but police have only released the name of one of the suspects and have confirmed that they were actually looking for two men who was last seen with the Carrias. Police have issued a wanted
poster for Guatemalan national Cesar Augusto Lopez Mendoza who it is believed fled back to his home country. No other information has been released about the other suspect./// Murder of Hazid Diaz Police are seeking 2 suspects in connection with the murder of Hazid Diaz whose body was found in a shallow grave in San Lazaro Village, Orange Walk. On Sunday October13th, Police visited an area North East of San Lazaro Village, Orange Walk District, where they saw the body of Hazid Diaz, 33 year old, buried in a shallow grave. Initial investigation revealed that about 1:00 p.m. Diaz left his home to socialize, and about 10:00 p.m. when he didn’t reach home, villagers commenced a search party where a trail of blood led them to the shallow grave. In the immediate vicinity of the grave residents found a wheelbarrow, shovel, hoe and a bloodied green shirt. Resi-
dents said they did not tamper with the crime scene and decided to call the police. The body was seen with several chop wounds. Police still does not have a motive at this time./// Pop Chopped in Cow Pen There was another murder in the quiet village of Cow Pen, Stann Creek District. On Sunday at 6:30pm Police were called out to a home in the village where they found the body of 58 year old Santiago Pop. Pop’s decomposing body was seen in a pool of blood and chop wounds were seen on the back of his head. Victor Juarez, Chairman, San Juan/ Cow Pen told local media that this murder has left the community puzzled. Police have no motive for this murder./// Troy Polonio Gunned Down in Belize City A 20 year old man was murdered on Sunday October 13. According to reports sometime around 8 p.m., Troy Polonio was
standing in a yard located on Racoon Street when a gun man walked up to him and fired several shots in his direction. He was holding his one year old child when he was attacked. Polonio received a gunshot wound to the chest and died while receiving treatment./// The murders just continue to happen with no solution from the UDP. It has been said over and over but we cannot stop saying it: When will this end? Not with the UDP...

THE BELIZE TIMES
Lost Count
The UDP has echoed into the microphones umpteenth times that murders and high crimes are down. The public usually expresses outrage at that quizzical assertion, usually coming from the highest in the National Security Ministry—Saldivar himself. No one else says it because they probably have higher standards. Mourning mothers and fathers and children and family and friends feel insulted and beg for this politician turned statistician turned fibber to stop it, for God’s Sake. The UDP invariably issues the numbers of murder victims in Belize and it makes you wonder if they are supplying you their murder conviction numbers. How do they count our fallen? How do they quantify the level of distress families go through with each Belizean victim? Why spin this number that is so hurtful? Political gain…that is the entire reason. It has been written and uttered over and over that the solution for Crime is NOT in the Ministry of National Security and much less in the idea-less UDP leader desirous. The solution is in sustained economic prosperity along with a high level of investment in our human resource—us Belizeans. The gigantic obstacle of corruption in government at various levels first has to be skewered and trashed into our history as a part of this crass attempt at a 3-term regime. Lately, an integral part of the Minis-
try of Economic Development is either selling us off or packing Belizeans into buildings in an open quest to win the Albert Division without actually helping to raise the quality of life of the real residents. Is this corruption? Barrow and Faber say no. They only care for people to vote only once. Sad! The same has been seen in some Rhaburn Ridge Cyclists, a Kelly Street affair, and other coincidental or not UDP prone addresses. Everyone that cares for a prosperous Belize is wondering how many more days do we have to take the UDP torment. Some could swear that Elections are this November 2019 while others stick with March 2020. The formula, by Belizean Law, can take the Elections up to Feb 15, 2021. By any account, that disaster would be beyond Category 5. Under the UDP, Belizeans have LOST COUNT. We have no idea of our murder count; we just know that blood is gushing; we have LOST COUNT. We have no idea how many voters are in each constituency; we have LOST COUNT. We have lost count even with millions spent for a new voters list or spent altogether by the UDP...we have LOST COUNT. We don’t know when the next General Elections are to be held. We need No Count of days. We wish to count the ballots NOW.

SEDI’S 300 GRAND OXYMORON: PROGRESSO HEIGHTS
“On July 21, 2017, the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) heard the case of Progresso Heights Ltd v Wilfred Elrington and Pitts & Elrington. At the end of the hearing the Court ordered that Mr. Wilfred Elrington SC, and his law firm, Pitts & Elrington, return all the conveyancing documents Progresso Heights Ltd sent from Florida to Mr. Elrington’s wife at the law firm’s address between September 2009 and June 2010, together with title certificates that had been issued in respect of eight of those documents. A search at the Land Registry revealed that somehow the relevant documents had been taken to the Land Registry, and the necessary duties and fees paid, so that title certificates had been duly issued in the names of purchasers of 8 of the 16 parcels of land in respect of which Progresso had made payments into Mr Elrington’s Florida account, but the certificates had not been delivered to Progresso. (ccj. org) As previewed, Sedi Elrington has been involved in an embarrassment of a long-drawn out lawsuit in which no former Attorney General nor a sitting Belize Foreign Minister should be involved. The Pickstock UDP representative is showing his constituency why he has not given to them the time that is needed to take them out of poverty. Sedi is too busy defending his acquired wealth. He doesn’t even find time to pay his taxes—duly confessed. In this most recent chapter he has lost a decision in Belize’s Supreme Court against his former business partners, principals of the Progresso Heights Ltd. real estate project, with Justice Courtney Abel ruling that Elrington had no authority to place a caution on the almost 100 parcels of land. The cautions
prevented the company’s owners from conducting its business and thus the order was for Elrington to pay $300,000 in damages to Lawrence and Adam Schneider. Elrington did not even have time to be in court when the decision was read last Thursday. The Attorney for Progresso Heights, Senior Counsel Eamon Courtenay, has written on behalf of his clients demanding payment by the end of the current month. Justice Abel ruled that Elrington would pay US $119,000 for specific losses the company had suffered, plus $1,000 for each parcel of land he had put a caution on, as well as the company’s costs and legal fees, all totalling over $300,000Bz. In 2011, Elrington had a caution placed on the properties, prohibiting any sale of those lands. Courtenay had even accused Elrington of using his political advantage at the Lands Registry. During testimony in court, however, it was noted that Elrington, who argues the company acted illegally, simply did not inform or advise his partners that they were in contravention of the law by not holding an annual general meeting to appoint an authorized auditor to review its finances as per the company’s articles. All the Belizean people can see is a man hell-bent to get his way. He wishes to manufacture a decision in any way, natural or artificial. It will therefore be in his best interest to be allowed ALL the time necessary as he most likely goes into a projected Appeals Case and beyond. The people of Pickstock and Belize are paying you to do their work not Progresso Height’s. In fact, they fired you ages ago as will the people of Pickstock who for all intents have given up on you. With Sedi there is no progress and no heights.

Belize City Councillor Dr. Candice Pitts: PUP Standard Bearer for the Mesopotamia Division
Remarks at the Opening of the Mesopotamia Community Sewing Centre
Good morning: Mayor of Belize City, his worship Bernard Wagner. Priest from St Ignatius Parish, Fr. Alvaro Salazar. Fellow City Councilors. Other Members of the People’s United Party. Members and trainers of the Mesopotamia Community Sewing Center. Members of my Mesopotamia committee. Residents of Mesopotamia. Members of the media, And Everyone in attendance. Welcome to the launch of the Mesopotamia Community Sewing Center Today marks the continuation of a series of historic moments in Mesopotamia and the ushering of the new beginning in this constituency that begun that day when I was endorsed as the PUP standard bearer for this division—an endorsement that I maintain took place as no coincidence on the anniversary of Emancipation Day in our part of the world. From our work in Mesopotamia since that endorsement, I got a sense of fatigue from the residents. Just plain fatigue. The people are tired. Tired of neglect. Tired of disrespect. Tired of being reduced to handouts—handouts that seek only to placate them and to assault their human dignity As a part of our new beginning in Mesopotamia, we are committed to respecting every man, woman, and child of this constituency. Respecting you by listening to you—respecting you by hearing from you, your needs and concerns. Many of you are already clear about the soaring crime rate, the lack of opportunities for the youth, neglect of the elderly, the lack of jobs, employment, and so forth—all of these, we must all agree result in a condition of persistent poverty. Our team is resolved to change this. The PUP has declared a war on poverty, and YOUR Mesopotamia committee takes this war seriously. Our mantra here in Mesopotamia is to fight this war in the first instance with the creation of wealth through jobs right here in our division. Today’s launch of the Mesopotamia community sewing center is not just another ceremony. It is 1) symptomatic of the new beginning in Mesopotamia; 2) an answer to the people’s lingering concerns about poverty and
3) it is an instance of wealth creation through the creation of jobs. The sewing factory creates jobs primarily for the single and unemployed mothers and women of Mesopotamia. The vision of the factory is to facilitate women entrepreneurship and help women to empower themselves by generating their own income. These women will receive training and guidance until they are at a level suitable for production for targeted markets. Truth of the matter, the creation of the factory did not take much. It only took being concerned genuinely for the people—for you. Caring for you. Listening to you. And matching you with people from the larger community who have similar interests in listening to and aiding you. These partnerships have brought about initiatives that provide jobs. Several of the young men of Mesopotamia have since been employed through these partnerships. I would say, we owe tremendous gratitude to such benevolent Belizeans who are making this possible. This factory, also created through similar partnerships, will allow 20+ (and in the near future 100+) women each year to earn a living wage. As I mentioned, it will facilitate women entrepreneurship. It will also encourage Belizeans to produce more and import less, and will therefore contribute to our own Belizean identity—Made in Belize. At the end of the day, my team’s philosophy is helping people to help themselves. Whether it’s the men or the women. Help them to help themselves. This initiative is not just for political gain; this is about a paradigm shift from seeing people dependent and exploitable to seeing them self-sufficient and self-empowered. Undoubtedly, this shift connects to the infrastructural project Mesopotamia needs desperately—a project that we champion, which is the facilitation of human persons towards liberation of their being and their meaningful participation in the social space. I therefore welcome you to this launch as we become witnesses to the movement of these women sewing not only to grow themselves, but to grow Mesopotamia, and their country at large. Thank you!

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) on 20 November 1989. This landmark human rights treaty sets out the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of every child, regardless of their race, religion or abilities. In particular, the Convention recognizes the right of every child to a standard of living adequate for the child’s physical, mental, spiritual, moral and social development. Poverty hurts children’s development and, in turn, leads to lower income and health in adulthood. When child poverty is recognized as a denial of children’s human rights then people in positions of responsibility and power are legally bound to promote, protect and fulfil children’s rights. Above all, it is imperative to recognize and address the specific discriminations experienced by the girl child. It is crucial that children’s participation be recognized as a process and not a one-off event. Too often consultation is mistaken for participation. Whereas the process of consultation gathers children’s views on a particular issue or question, participation means that children actually join in in decision- making. The commemoration of October 17 each year demonstrates how we can achieve greater participation by enabling people from all walks of life to come together to respect the human rights and dignity of people living in poverty. The participation of children and young people has always been encouraged and supported as an integral part of October 17 observances at the United Nations and around the world. This recognizes the important roles children can play by sharing and applying the valuable knowledge they have acquired from their personal daily struggle to overcome poverty. (www.un.org)
Party Leader John Briceño is on record with a vision to end poverty in Belize. The following is an excerpt of his Independence Day Address 2019.
“In this day and age, it is unconscionable that we expect our low-income workers to labour for so little. Today I commit to lead the effort in working towards a gradual increase so that in the near future every Belizean worker can expect NO less than a five dollar an hour minimum wage. If there is one issue that Belizeans are very angry about it is the issue of corruption. It is clear that we politicians are incapable of policing ourselves. This current culture of corruption is endemic, and it must stop. If we can halt corruption, we can bring an end to poverty. Every dollar lost to corrupt practice is a dollar lost to educate our children, to feed our hungry, to provide better homes and to help finance our health care. If we are to deliver on our promise to build Belize, then we have to be committed to good governance.”

THINK ABOUT IT
To: Josephine Tamai Chief Elections Officer It has come to my attention that some fifty odd persons are registered on the voters list at No. 56 Regent Street in the Albert constituency. The address is a wooden house where I live with my parents and siblings. I am most disturbed that so many persons that so many persons can claim to be living there as it is impossible to house so many voters in one building. Surely they do not all live there alone without their families. I fail to understand how your elections officer for the Albert constituency could not have seen that something was obviously wrong with such a large number of voters registering at one address. Said officer should be investigated and properly punished for gross dereliction of his duties. He or she has brought you, your office and the elections department into disrepute and caused the integrity of the elections process to be called into disrepute. You, as head of such an important department, have failed to put in place any oversight procedure, and any dishonest and bribes….elections officer can allow false and fake voters to register where they do not live. I am told this practice is widespread throughout the UDP voters list but that does not make it legal, moral or acceptable. You should consider resigning your position and the same applies to the chairman of the Elections and Boundaries Commission. Nothing of this magnitude of this blatant violation and manipulation of the voters list has ever been recorded and I have no intention to have my good name and honest character to be sullied and smeared as a politician who was elected based on dishonesty and bribery of poor people who lie and cheat to get on the voters list at addresses where they do not live. Before you resign or are transferred please find at least one honest Non-UDP elections official who will investigate 56 Regent Street and the other bogus voters and remove them to the electoral areas where they actually live. Unsigned by Tracy Tiger Plantain. SPEAKER LONGSWORTH OUT OF ORDER Madam Speaker you are out of order. Way out of order. How dare you write the Opposition Leader and tell him the Opposition Members in the House, maybe don’t know the Standing Orders. What are you smoking Madam? Not because the Perdomo write-off scandal was already debated or not fully debated in August means that it cannot be raised on the adjournment. Which Standing Order says that? You quoted none. Your letter to the Opposition Leader was small minded and party political and most disrespectful coming from a person who is required to and be non-political and impartial. Honourable Johnny Briceno is right; you stifled debate in the House of Representative. You are wrong and you are out of order. EXTORTION IN BELIZE A businessman in Belize City went to the Police Station and gave a written report. He told the Police that three young men have visited his shop. They told him he was making money and he had to start paying them for protection. The businessman told the Police he felt threatened and that something bad was going to happen. This an important matter, we applaud the businessman for his bravery in coming forward. This extortion business is a new form of gangsterism that is taking place in our country. It has to be stamped out. HAS TO. We have all seen home invasion taking root in Belize. Like murder, this new crime is now part of a way of life. The situation is dread. KENRICK RENEAU Kenrick Reneau and his family are outraged over the police version of how he got shot. Police says he was pursued following a burglary report. Police say during pursuit in a swampy area in Belize City, they were shot at. They returned fire. Reneau says while he was captured and in custody in the area the police at close range shot him several times. In other countries, and even in racist Amerikkka where white police routinely shoot black citizens, there would be an independent investigation. Not in Belize. It is written that where there is no justice there will never be peace. The opinions shown in the articles above are fully in the opinion of the author and not entirely PUP policy. Voters List Tarnished for Good…or is it?
Imagine going to court and being defended by Salazar, Elrington and Montero. Just imagine it! What would Saldivar’s perception be? Hmmm? A UDP team of lawyers argued against the obvious— there are too many people registered at various addresses. But in a surprise to Belizeans, all these voters can vote from many cornered buildings and Law Offices. So was the outcome of that case… Sad! I remember going to re-register in August 2019. The young lady was at odds that I HAD TO GO BACK HOME to get a light bill or something to prove I lived there. By jove, now, I feel harassed and disrespected for being law-abiding. I went
home under the rain to get that bill. Now, I feel that Elections and Boundaries is a waste to time and definitely NOT doing their job. There is definitely LOTS of work to do if they are registering people wrongly in homes. What makes it ok for this little 1 percent of people able to register wherever they want—regardless of what Barrow and Faber say? Regardless of how that case ended up, how can ALL those people prove they live there? They cannot all have light bills or water bills or cable or… Since when is it JUST the word of the person who lives there? Our Democracy is being raped. The UDP is trying a new version of migrant 2012 and Petrocaribe 2015. A mere attempt
to rig the system is criminal. This isn’t a court case it is a political case of malicious electioneering. The sad news for the UDP is that they are short a few thousand votes to move from one place to the next. Hurry get your ducks in a row. Start with the lame ones UDP… Even ducks flock towards their leader, who will you flock to. Who have similar feathers? Analogy: We have ALL played board or card game. When someone cheats it is because they are losing and cannot fathom the idea. UDP are losers. And Belizeans will make sure that you do only MORE LOSING at any opportunity.

Hon.

FOCUS ON MMA FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT IN BELIZE
By Dr. Pedro Villegas “Sports build good habits, confidence, and discipline. They make players into community leaders and teach them how to strive for a goal, handle mistakes, and cherish growth opportunities”. –Julie Foudy– Upon joining the Word Federation on Elite Martial Arts (WFM), the World Judo-Kickboxing Federation and the Pan-American Association of Mixed Martial Arts (APAM) in early 2019; the Western Elite Martial Arts Club (WEMAC) in Belize had taken the first steps towards realizing some of its key goals and ambitions. Along with the nationwide development of the sport; including the safeguarding of participants and the promotion of MMA; the WEMAC also have a desire to utilize the sport to help with kids and youth social development for those in violent, inner city communities. WFM Vice President Klinger de Souza Araujo is continuously checking in on progress and a notable collaboration between the WFM and WEMAC. With a focus on areas with sparse resources, WEMAC uses a combination of MMA and Kickboxing alongside education and personal development to help kids and young people in communities affected by crime, violence and social exclusion to realize their potential. The WFM Vice President explained that WEMAC is an important cause and WFM fully believes that Belize should be concentrating its focus on children and youth development. This partnership is a fantastic way to do that. The APAM President Master Jorge Zeki, who visited Belize in August this year explained that “If we can help lay those sustained foundations for growing the next generation of practitioners and competitors, then we will be helping the WEMAC build toward

achieving some of their key goals.” The Western Elite Martial Arts Club President, Dr. Pedro Villegas also said: “By using MMA lessons to assist children within our communities in Belize, we can teach them to cope with the stress of the harsh conditions in their communities while instilling key discipline and control. “WEMAC will continue to focus on the development of the kids and youth in MMA, teaching MMA techniques to Benque Viejo youth, but we will also be establishing competitions using the rules set by the WFM for teenage athletes living within these communities.” A separate ambition of the WEMAC is to establish an MMA Club within the Belize Police Department, along with a combat sports training facility at the main military camp in the country. Dr. Villegas added, “We recognize that Belize needs more support for this Foundation to reach its objectives. The team in Belize are dedicated and enthusiastic despite having some limitations. We are working on getting the right infrastructure in place. “The acquisition of an official training site would be a true milestone for MMA in the country and it would set them on their way to achieve Olympic Committee alignment along with much-needed recognition from the Ministry of Education Youths and Sport.” On August 21 & 22, 2019, an International Seminar on Mixed Martial Arts was taught in Belize City for the benefit of our MMA Community. The business community are providing support with the donation of few equipment to aid in grass roots development, in addition to im-
plementing the MMA development program for coaches. Our Country will host the World Championship on Mixed Martial Arts on November, 2020 where fight for 15 World Titles are expected. The hope is that by 2020, Belize will be producing MMA athletes that can be added to the list
of Belizean sporting greats with the capabilities and talent to join the nation’s Olympic legacy alongside the likes of Marion Jones, Albert Morales and Simone Bale. You can reach your own conclusions. God bless Belize! Follow us at: www.cubel.online & www.facebook.com/Belize.WEMAC

Vaping-related lung injuries now at 1,479 cases nationwide, CDC says By Michael Nedelman and Jacqueline Howard, CNN (CNN)There are 1,479 lung injury cases associated with e-cigarette products in 49 states, the District of Columbia and the US Virgin Islands as of Tuesday, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Alaska is the only state without a reported case. That’s an increase from last week, when there were 1,299 cases of vaping-related lung injuries. About 78% of patients reported using THC-containing products, with or without nicotine-containing products. About 80% of patients are under 35 years old. The median age of patients is 23 years and they range in age from 13 to 75 years. The CDC on Thursday also identified 33 vaping-related deaths in 24 states: three each from California, Indiana and Minnesota; two each from Georgia, Kansas and Oregon; and one each from Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Virginia. More deaths are under investigation, according to the CDC. The patients who died ranged in age from 17 to 75. The CDC, US Food and Drug Administration, state and local health departments, and other clinical and public health partners are continuing to investigate the multistage outbreak. The specific chemical exposure causing these lung injuries remains unknown. The CDC has reported that all patients in the outbreak had a history of using e-cigarette products, and most have reported a history of using products containing tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, the primary psychoactive component of cannabis.
Healthy diet improves depression in young adults, study says By Sandee LaMotte, CNN (CNN)Not only did eating a healthy diet for three weeks improve depressive symptoms in college-aged young adults, but those who continued the diet for three months kept their improved outlook on life, according to a small randomized trial on diet and depression. “Simply cutting down processed food intake and increasing fruit, vegetable(s) and fish resulted in improvements in depression symptoms,” said Heather Francis, a neuropsychologist at Australia’s Macquarie University and the lead author of the study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS One. Teens in the study who had the greatest increase in fruit and vegetable consumption showed the most improvement, Francis said, and those who did not change their diet had no change in their depression from the start of the study. The average age of participants in the study was 19. Focus on healthy foods Study participants were asked to cut back on refined carbohydrates; sugar; fatty or processed meats; and soft drinks. Highly processed foods have
been shown to increase inflammation, which is a risk factor for depression, Francis said. During the three weeks of the study, teens were asked to eat the following foods each day: five servings of vegetables; two to three fruits; three servings of grains; three servings of protein, such as lean meat, poultry, eggs, tofu, or fish (up to three times a week); three servings of unsweetened dairy; three tablespoons of nuts and seeds; two tablespoons of olive oil; and one teaspoon of turmeric and cinnamon. Turmeric and cinnamon were included because they have anti-inflammatory properties, Francis said, as do nutrient-dense foods such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains and fish.

Brexit deal agreed as EU leaders endorse Boris Johnson’s plan
Mexico: Army deployed after police killed in ambush CNN.com Mexico has sent 80 soldiers and an army helicopter to the western Michoacán state after a shooting in which at least 13 police officers were killed. The police were carrying out a court order in the town of El Aguaje when they were ambushed by gunmen on Monday. A powerful criminal group, the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel, is believed to have carried out the attack. Separately, 14 armed civilians and a soldier died in a gunfight in the western state of Guerrero on Tuesday. The state government said the soldiers were responding to an emergency call in the municipality of Tepochica, near the city of Iguala, when they were attacked by the gunmen and returned fire. It was not immediately known if the two attacks were related. Also on Tuesday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said his tough policies on drug crime would eventually pay dividends. “I’m optimistic we’ll secure peace... we’re completely dedicated to this issue, but [past governments] allowed it to grow,” the president was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency. Police patrol vehicles were ambushed as they passed through the town. Reports say the convoy was surrounded by heavily armed men in a number of pick-up trucks who then fired on the officers and set their vehicles on fire. El Aguaje is considered to be of strategic importance between two battling cartels: the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) and a splinter group of the Knights Templar Cartel called Los Viagras. A message left at the site suggested the attack was carried out by gunmen connected to the CJNG. Mexico’s federal authorities had earlier said that 14 police officers were killed, but the death toll was later revised by state officials. The supposed leader of the CJNG was killed by Michoacán police less than a week ago.
Ecuador Government Restores Fuel Subsidies
bbc.com Ecuador’s government has agreed to restore fuel subsidies in a deal with indigenous leaders to end mass protests that have brought the capital, Quito, to a standstill, the UN says. It came after the two sides held talks brokered by the UN and the Roman Catholic Church. The talks, which were broadcast live on state television, came after nearly two weeks of violent demonstrations. President Lenín Moreno had imposed a curfew enforced by the military. A joint statement said the government had withdrawn an order removing the fuel subsidies. “With this agreement, the mobilisations... across Ecuador are terminated and we commit ourselves to restoring peace in the country,” it said. The two sides will now discuss a new law to ensure subsidies are not exploited by people who smuggle fuel to neighbouring countries. Government official Juan Sebastián Roldán said talks to start drafting the new law would start immediately. “Conceding is not losing,” he said. “Here we are all conceding.” A commission will also be set up to re-establish peace in the stricken Andean nation, with mediation by the Catholic Church, the UN and others.///
CNN Boris Johnson has just been speaking to reporters in Brussels, after securing his Brexit deal with the EU. Understandably, he’s very enthusiastic about it. “I want to stress that this is a great deal for our country, for the UK. I also believe it’s a very good deal for our friends in the EU,” Johnson said. “We can decide our future together, we can take back control, as the phrase goes. “We will be able to do free trade agreements around the world.” “The extraction having been done, the building now begins,” Johnson says. On the all-important issue of whether Parliament will pass he deal, he says: “I’m very confident that when my colleagues in Parliament study this agreement that they will want to vote for it on Saturday and then in succeeding days.” “This is our chance in the UK, as democrats, the get Brexit done.” The British Pound has surge on the news.
