BARROW’S PLAGUES “To campaign like the devil, particularly on the ground. Every candidate needs to be,” – Dean Barrow, 2008

We Belizeans wake up each day to a breath of fresh air but quickly realize that we are still living in the age of Barrow. In 2008, he all but skewered and destroyed the meaning to the word ‘promise’ as he and the UDP made sure that they campaigned like the devil with a world of imaginary lies and deceit. In Pharaoh-like fashion he has insulted the peasants by caring less and less for them each day. The jewel around us is crumbling and all the PM can do is rush to Cuba or Miami. If you PM are sick, we understand, just resign. The people of Belize know that your UDP is leaderless and that you feel that no one can fill into your Gucci’s. Dean Oliver Barrow seems to draw the worse of the worse from his Party and even nature. It is long understood that he cannot control his rogue Ministers and that is “unfortunate.” The calamities that surround Belize are way out of the UDPs league. Belizeans are suffering what can only be called the Plagues of Barrow: Murders The Minister of National Insecurity as it is now called constantly presents figures that show crime and murders on a down turn. Saldivar is sorry that people have the perception that crime is up. Saldivar is clueless as to why the people think that murders are rampant and out of control.

BARROW’S BEDS

his past week did not bode well for our environment, which is the main reason for our booming tourism industry. The New River in the North continues to be polluted by industrial waste and the Macal, once a pristine source of fresh water for the Twin Towns, has now become a dump site for garbage. There are many meetings, but no real political will or action to stop big money from killing our rivers. On the other hand, Compol is gearing up to make a big splash with new Gala Uniforms for the Top Brass of the Police. Inquiring minds would like to know what the planned Galas are celebrating, could it be the increase in crime, the dismal conviction rate, or the rise in gender based violence we currently experience? Perhaps these uniforms will be used at fundraising Galas as the Police Department is now forced to occupy their time in raising funds for their transport and equipment rather than crime fighting, prevention and conviction. LPG, most know it as butane gas used for cooking and increasingly for transport. An increase in the price of LPG will almost certainly trigger an increase in price of food. At the most recent House Meeting the PM unveiled his macabre pièce de résistance, a calculated move, to hit the 43% of Belizeans that live in poverty hard. The plan to create a National Gas Company, a monopoly, of which GOB will own minority shares of only 25% will serve only to ensure that the small group of elite investors have absolutely no competition. One of the most rudimentary principles of Economics is that absolute control of the supply in a given market will result in a monopoly that sets its own prices, invariably quite above the average market value. First year sixth form Economics students can tell you that it is competition that leads to lower prices because multiple suppliers compete for consumers by lowering prices and becoming more efficient and effective in the process. Monopolies stifle investment and employment. Government sanctioned and endorsed monopolies are bad for Belize, because they erode foreign investor confidence. This leads to even more unemployment and poverty for our country, but even more importantly it leads to a greater disparity of wealth among Belizeans. The truth is that this monopoly will benefit no one but a handful of Barrow’s elite friends. This is a bad deal for the majority of Belizeans who are struggling to make ends meet. Already our middle class is like a fish in the New River, belly up and in danger of extinction, when it finally disappears our country will be left with a majority of peasants, living in extreme poverty. The PM and few of his favourite friends will be the elite who in fact own and operate Belize. Most notable in this new deal is that the monopoly will enjoy many perks such as no restrictions to sell directly to the retail market. Prices will not be subject to scrutiny by the PUC or the Bureau of Standards. The building phase will not generate any GST or import duties and more alarmingly there will be no foreign exchange controls. The building of the facilities will be subject only to GOB’s tendering process, and we all know how that works out. All in all, PM has prepared a bed of roses for his friends. The Belize Business Bureau (BBB) says this is nothing but a “seed bed for corrupt practices.” But we say that the PM likes his beds and this is just another that joins his collection which already has the notorious “hotbed of corruption.” We must remember to be extremely careful when elections come Belizeans… “So we make our bed, so we must lie on it.”

QUESTIONS TO THE MINISTERS 1. Considering that DPM Faber said publicly that he was not in support of writing-off $42,000 in debt for his former colleague Carlos Perdomo’s son, will Minister Faber please say if he is in agreement with his colleges John Saldivar, Elodio Aragon, Hugo Patt and Frank “Papa”Mena who gave their approval for the granting of the write-off of $42,000 to Joshua Perdomo? 2. Will Minister Hugo Patt please provide this nation with the names of the persons and interests that will be benefitting from 90 million dollars in write-off for land taxes including the amount of write-offs for each person or interest and the area and amount of lands of those receiving write-offs? 3. Will the Minister of National Security John Saldivar say if he is aware of the increase in crime that is now nationwide, the heinous nature of these crimes and will he also say if he is aware of the increase in crime in his own constituency Belmopan, where in one night, three businesses were robbed? 4. Is the Minister of Health Pablo Marin aware that there are more than 2,270 Belizeans diagnosed with dengue fever and is the Minister aware that there are enough reported cases of dengue fever to declare this a national emergency which if declared would allow for Social Security to draw down from the National Disaster Fund or Social Security Development Fund to help offset the costs for paying out of sickness benefits? 5. Will the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance please say if and when construction will commence on the new Haulover Bridge, which he presented as one of his many projects during last year, and this year during his budget presentations? And will the Prime Minister also say how much has been budgeted for the construction of this bridge and how much has been spent so far? 6. Where is the Minister of the Environment? Considering that the Hon. Omar Figueroa was appointed to run the Ministry of Environment and celebrated as one of the nation’s top environmental scientists and also considering all the current environmental issues facing the nation, including the problem in the New River, will the Minister please address the nation on the plan to clean up the New River and also will he address the other environmental concerns facing the nation?

Party Leader John Briceño’s Weekly Message Hi Everybody. The summer break is over, and it is back to school time. While our children are excited about their new uniforms, books and so on, many are not aware of the sacrifices their parents are making to ensure that they have everything they need to start the school year. This can be a challenging and expensive time for parents. But when you think about the opportunities that are available to those children who are able to receive a quality education, then, it makes all the sacrifice worthwhile. There is an old saying: “strive for learning before you grow old; for learning is better than silver and gold.” This is so true and for those of us who are fortunate enough to have gotten a good education, we know the real meaning and value of this statement. This is why in the PUP we continue to speak about the importance of education and the need for us to create a new vision for education in our country. Since last year, I have put together a team of persons who have served as administrators, teachers, entrepreneurs and even university professors to look at our current system. This team, headed by Hon. Francis Fonseca, has been given one instruction: devise a plan for free, relevant, value-centered education for our children. I have assigned this task because I believe the current system is flawed and needs to be fixed. As we start the new academic year, too many children who should be in school will not be enrolled. Likewise, a number of our young people will be signing up for tertiary level courses that will not help them to lead productive lives in Belize. This is why we need relevant education with the kind of training that will see our young people graduate with the skills to perform the tasks and do the jobs of today and tomorrow, whether it be in agriculture, tourism, other services, technology or to create new and innovative industries. We also want our students to develop an entrepreneurial spirit that will see them creating new businesses where they work for themselves. Finally, we need a fairer system where scholarships are awarded on merit and to those most in need rather than the kind of corrupt system that currently exists under this UDP administration. Soon our Education Working Group will present a draft plan for strengthening our education system to our Party’s Executive. I am sure the plan will have input by Belizeans from every walk of life. As well, it will include recommendations for improving critical thinking skills, reinforcing math and science and equipping our Belizean students with the academic and social skills to cope and be successful in this ever-changing world. We have to do all this, and whatever sacrifices it may take, we will make those sacrifices for our children and for the future of this nation. For this too is a part of building a Belize that works for everyone. Thanks, God bless and have a safe week.

BELLY of the

BEAST

Foot in Mouth Disease Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber, already no favourite of the lame duck Mr. Barrow, has been diagnosed with an intense strain of foot in mouth disease, and we are told ‘doctors’ in Cabinet are recommending that he be quarantined. According to our sources in Cabinet, Faber was on the point of tears when he was raked over the coals for saying that neither he nor Mr. Barrow knew about the corrupt write-off for the son of Cabinet Secretary Carlos Perdomo. When Faber saw the public outcry generated by that typical UDP move, he decided he could jump on the bandwagon, and he forgot that when in Cabinet, you need to take one for the team and agree with everything. Nobody could be happier than the Minister otherwise not affectionately known as porky pig, who feels that with Faber’s gaffe, his chances of being UDP leader have now increased. If there is anything porky pig knows how to do, it is taking one for the team. We are told that he regularly took one for the team at those boxers parties while hanging out with his friend Mason in that mansion on the hilltop in Belmopan. Outrageous Corruption We here at the Belize Times join the Public Service Union and many other right-thinking Belizeans in condemning the outrageous nepotism and corruption displayed when Cabinet decided that it was okay to forgive a debt of $40,000 to the son of a UDP Minister turned Cabinet Secretary. There are many poor Belizeans who have never been given those opportunities, and many poor Belizeans who scraped to get loans to pursue their education, and have to pay back every cent. Nobody – and we mean nobody – believes that story about nobody being able to find Joshua Perdomo. How stupid is that? We think that Cabinet Secretary Carlos Perdomo should be ashamed of himself for having his children’s names being dragged through the mud. Ain’t no way those crooked people in Cabinet didn’t know exactly what they were doing! But they miscalculated the outrage of the Belizean people. This one will not go away. That list How is it that nobody has been able to get a copy of the lists of all those persons whose land taxes were written off by Mr. Barrow and his Cabinet? Mr. Barrow decided, for some reason, to write off $90M in taxes for certain select persons at the same time that he burdened Belizeans with another $150M in loans. Why the write-off? Who are these lucky persons who have gotten off scot-free with not paying their land taxes? Is it true that they are all wealthy land-owners, most of them known affiliates of the UDP? Belizeans need to know. No normal Belizean can get anything from government in this country. Yet there are those privileged few who seem to get everything. It is way past time for the lame duck Prime Minister to call elections. The people are ready. Morgue Madness Two things: first, CEO George Gough actually exists. Many people thought he was a myth, since he has been dodging the media since he became CEO and somebody whispered the word ‘malpractice.’ Anyway so he turned up for a choreographed interview with the Government Press Office, and explained how fixing up the old morgue at the Southern Regional Hospital cost taxpayers $250,000. Just a second there buster! How in the name of God could a four-persons refrigerated unit cost $250,000? Here at the Belize Times we’ve gone on different sites offering that specialized equipment. The one bought for the morgue at the Southern Regional Hospital morgue can fit four persons. We found many that can fit six bodies, ranging in price from US$3000 - US$5000 – from recognized medical supply companies. So how do we get from BZD$10,000 to BZD$250,000? Something is very, very wrong there. Money went into somebody’s pocket, that’s for sure. The Belize Times has called all over the place trying to find out which company handled the contract for the purchase and installation of the new unit, and also the fixing of the old unit. Altogether, we are told, the units cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars – for units which cost BZD$10,000. Only under the UDP. Pablo again Anytime Pablo gets his hands on something, it always goes wrong. The man was on the news this week crying about how Belizeans are so doubting, and always criticize them when they are doing their best. Wipe your crocodile tears, pendejo, and come clean about the contract to Minister Montero’s brother which you planned to raid NHI funds to pay out? Come clean about this pharmaceutical company which people are always saying you’re involved in. Come clean about who got the contracts for the morgue at the Southern Regional Hospital. And maybe you can also explain to all of us how your long-time driver has suddenly become a Customs Officer, specially appointed by you. What the hell is going on? Recently two persons close to Pablo who were let go from the Zone for having chronically sticky fingers were posted as Customs Officers. The people want to know, Pablo. Stop crying and start talking.

SCHOOLBAGS NOT WRITTEN OFF The vicious whirlwind called the UDP continues its daily rumble with the people of the Belizean people. The UDP promised that they would lead us through a transparent path cleared of corruption with a prime ministerial two-sided machete. We see still waiting 11 years later. Unbeknownst to the UDP despots Sanctuary Bay had already compromised the leader even before 2008. That excellent empire B&W had tainted the very soul of the UDP. Now the very schoolbags on our children’s back are not affordable and they have not been written-off. How? It is all connected. We can begin with any issue and end at the same spot--at a Government For All that can go wrong--Barrow’s Law seamlessly replacing Murphy’s without notice or apology. The daily scourge of crime is mishandled by an inept Minister who himself is absorbed with a singular court case, that of the beheading of a pastor. Crime is being perpetrated by our youth

whose parents were fooled 12years ago into a perpetual imagination which will never materialize. In 2008, you also careened in a Minister of Education who today WOULD NOT even qualify to be a teacher; that is unfortunate. Twelve years later we see his failed system failing our children and firing qualified teachers and crippling already creeping school resources. On August 24 2019, the UDP’s BTL celebrated an illegal expropriation (I cannot say stealing) of BTL. The already resigned CEO spent thousands of dollars to hold a variety show and raffle a vehicle in front of an empty Digi park. The only jobs created by the UDP raping of our constitution were for other UDP’s at BTL, BWS, BEL. Jobs became rare diamonds afforded by only 1 percent. Our concerned citizen of the millennium became conman number one. He somehow became Minister of Agricultural and the Environment without getting an iota of electorate approval. He vies for the Conman of these Priceless 38 years

challenging the likes of Pukke and Oulet. Ask the farmers and the friends of the New River who is there Minister of Agriculture. The New River is an epidemic in waiting and hopefully to stay there with the help of God. The Ministry of Health would only have expired medicines and white baby elephant polyclinics to combat it. Morgues.... take a deep breath. Ironically enough our forensic expert absconded. If we get sick there would be no money to run across the border since jobs are low in wages and

the little had would be spent in education and if not one might fall into Crime--a vicious whirlwind caused by a clueless UDP. Prime Minister Barrow the people of Belize are asking you to cease and desist with all this chaos that your United Democratic Party so-called a government, is mercilessly imposing on Belize. My apologies dear Prime Minister maybe you were not savvy enough to see that Pukke was a fraudster and now for me to ask you to step down as fast as possible is too easy since hindsight is 2020. Echoes of the Joshua Perdomo write-off will reverberate in you at electoral tinnitus levels. Do the right honourable thing PM.

What is happening in Cayo? Is there a drug war brewing? Cayo Residents are in fear.

On Wednesday, August 28, 2019, San Ignacio police arrested and charged a Santa Elena, Cayo resident for the shooting murder of Nelson Flores. Officer Commanding San Ignacio Police, Superintendent Henry Jemmott, said they have arrested and charged George Gallindo. He was charged for murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault. According to police investigations, Flores was at home with his family when sometime after 9pm Sunday, August 28, 2019, when two men showed up at his home. One of the men entered and fatally wounded Nelson and shot his twelve year old daughter. One more person inside the home was assaulted in the process. When asked if the motive is drug related Police would only say that they have conducted searches at Flores’s house several times and he has several matters before the court. Police say they are currently looking for a second suspect./// The second shooting happened within less than 24 hours at a yard located on Perez Road, Santa Elena, Cayo. Could the previous shooting on Sunday night be linked to this? Three men were inside the yard sometime after 9pm on Monday August 26, 2019, when a gunman came out of a red pick-up and walked up to gate and basically emptied the clip of his gun. After the gunshots ended only Arden Quiroz, 18 year old, was hit to the right arm. Scenes of Crime technicians found 15 expended shells at the scene. The Masters’ Giveaways By Gilroy Usher, Sr. “To oppose corruption in government is the highest obligation of patriotism.” - G. Edward Griffin The 2020 general election is fast approaching. Nevertheless that did not prohibit the administration from rubbing the public the wrong way when it approved two massive giveaways to favorite persons on Friday August 16, 2019 in parliament. Those giveaways were carried out with two write-offs. A student loan of $40,000.00 was written off for Joshua Perdomo, the son of Cabinet Secretary, Carlos Perdomo. The other write-off was for $90M in unpaid land taxes owed mainly by large land owners. The government loan was used by Perdomo to qualify as a forensic expert in the United States. The write-offs sends a terrible signal to the public. It says that while other Belizeans struggle to pay student loans and other loans from G.o.B., until such debts are paid in full, if you are politically well-connected, you do not have to repay a government loan, as the right person will be contacted to ensure it is written-off. The UDP administration has no problem in giving $40,000.00 to a rich kid, who is gainfully employed as an expert in his field in the United States. There are ministers tell deserving Belizeans, struggling to care for their families, with mainly part-time employment, or with starvation minimum wage, that they cannot assist them with a hundred dollars to deal with the cost of their children’s education. With that $40,000.00 gifted to a single person, Joshua Perdomo, the administration could have assisted 400 deserving families with $100.00 for educational expense. The claim that Joshua’s student loan was written off because he cannot be located is total rubbish. Not even hardcore red supporters buy that crop. With the resources of the government at his disposal the Cabinet Secretary can locate his son anywhere in the world. Secondly a Google search of Joshua Perdomo gives tremendous information about the individual including the name and address of the company in the United States where he is currently employed as a forensic expert. On the issue of land. The administration wrote off $90M in overdue taxes for wealthy land owners then borrowed $100M from Taiwan. That made absolutely no sense. We have to repay Taiwan that $100M with

interest. If they had collected that $90M in overdue land taxes overtime, the country would have only been in need of $10M more from Taiwan to suffice the $100M for the intended project. Instead of writing-off that huge amount of taxes for mostly wealthy land owners, the UDP should have used the opportunity to acquire land from the wealthy land owners in exchange for taxes owed and distribute those lands as lots for ordinary Belizeans. That’s exactly how the visionary George Price and other past leaders were able to distribute thousands of lots to average Belizeans across the country. With this administration, for eleven plus long years, people have been unable to access land especially for their homes. The UDP set aside $180M for Caracol Road through thick jungle and $15M for a 6 floor building, but continuously say they have no funds to make land available for ordinary Belizeans. Then they write-off 90M in taxes for wealthy land owners and literally tell them G.o.B. wants nothing in return; not even one square centimeter of land is requested in exchange for the huge write-off. Few persons would be surprised if the $90m write-off in taxes for wealth land owners plays a major role with election financing for the ruling party in next year’s general elections. Seems like it will take a revolution for the Masters in Belmopan to understand that regular folks are tired of their continuous giveaways to the haves. Belizeans are tired of taxpayer money being used to make politically-connected persons richer while they become poorer. Belizeans who are under severe burden with high house rent or living like sardines in tin cans or in overcrowded yards and homes are tired of begging for a piece of land to build their own houses.

EULOGY

Theodore James Lennan Delivered by Michel Chebat, PUP Standard Bearer Cayo North

Gone too soon!

Good afternoon Everyone, Ms. Carmita, Rita, Paapi, Melissa, Lisa, Marlon, Lawrence, Trevor, Jaynee, Claudigale, Brion, Norwin and to the entire family – on my behalf, on my family’s behalf, on behalf of the PUP Cayo North Executive, the Hon John Briceno and the People’s United Party, I express our most sincere sympathies. We share in your sorrow and in your loss. Today, we are gathered here to remember and to celebrate the life of Theodore James Lennan. Affectionately called “Theo” or “T”. You called him husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle … and we called him friend and brother. Ms Carmita, after I left your home on Tuesday morning I tried to remember for how long I have known “Theo” … I realized that I have known him all my life. As I look around this Church today, I realize that we all have known him for all of our lives; and, even if that is not the absolute truth, the fact of the matter is, that once you met him, he made you feel as if though you had known him all of your life. I grew up considering Theo a part of my family – he was always with my immediate family and my extended family and he treated us like his family. Over the last 4 years he and I became especially close. He became my advisor and my confidant. I remember there were times when at the end of the day’s work , I would say to him – “T – no pillow talk with Carmuch tonite – he would just look at me and laugh.” There were days he would accompany me to the Benque Viejo Magistrate Court or he would sit in the park in front of the police station, here in San Ignacio, and when I would come out – he would then say to me “WE win”? I would look at him, smile and say “T we nuh go dah Court fu loose”, Nothing pleased him more than to hear

that “WE” had won. You see, he was a team player and knew the value of team work. “Theo” was no ordinary man – he was a legendary football player. He played both center and right fullback for one of the most historic football teams – Cayo’s Mighty Avengers. As a fullback, Theo scored some of the most memorable goals with his “head”.His accomplishments on the football field received much deserved recognition when he was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame of Belize. His love for the sport and his athleticism was passed on to his children and grandchildren – who have now made names for themselves both in football and in basketball—a fact of which Theo was very proud of. Theo was no ordinary man—his love and dedication to his wife and children set him apart from many. For him, family was first—he loved his daughters and he never shied away from showing that love to them —he loved his boys as well – and he taught them that they must work for what they wanted in life. He thought his children the value of honest, hard work. He thought them the importance of family and of carrying for and loving each other. And they know he loved them and they loved him too. Rita says this about her Dad: “Dad was always an avid sportsman. He was a member of the great Avengers. A team he loved. As a family, we would travel with him from district to district. He was a great football player. My dad loved football and his team was Verdes. He cried when Verdes would lose. Hi son Burga was playing with Bandits and that’s the only time he would not cheer for Verdes when they played against the Bandits. I can recall many happy moments with him dancing the night away. We always opened the dance floor at every family gathering. He loved dancing as much as I do. Dad was an open, loving, kind and friendly person and I think almost all of Cayo knew him. He loved karaoke. He was a fun going person, always the life of every party. I could call on him anytime to help me out at the organization I work feeding kids. He was truly an honorable man, a man of integrity. He loved politics and Micho was his very good friend. He rallied behind Micho 100%. He was good friends with Sergio Chuc too and he often times told me we have our political differences, but our friendship is beyond politics. Dad you left a great void in my life. I shall miss you until the end of my days on earth. Farewell my love until

2019

we meet again.” This is from Melissa “Words cannot explain the pain you left me with. I feel like a part of me is gone. You were one of the most loving persons to me and my 2 children. Moving back home with you and mommy made me feel like I was your baby child all over again. There was nothing that you would not do for me. I remember whenever I would come home from work if one day I did not go to the front with you guys, you would be knocking at my window saying “Melissa babe are you ok, how come you did not come to the front last night. Daddy you were one of a kind. It pains my heart knowing that I am not there to bid you farewell. I love you more than anything. You are gone but will never be forgotten. Look over me and my kids. Rest in Peace Dad. Till we meet again. Your daughter Melissa.” And from Lisa “There are so many special memories I have of my daddy. To begin with, he was always the life of the party, every party that we attended together he ensured that we danced together. He was loved by everyone! He gave each and every one of his grandkids a nickname. He was always concerned about Nyssa my daughter who is unwell. My dad was a special person. The love he shared with each of his kids always made each of us feel

special. He will be greatly missed. I love you Dad. Farewell until we meet again. I was at his home on Wednesday and Thursday night and was amazed by the number of people who came to comfort the family. A testimony to the extra-ordinary person that “THEO” was. A man who loved his community and who was loved in return. Theodore “Theo” James Lennan was born on the 29th of December 1941. He is survived by his wife, Mrs Carmela Sofia Lennan. His children Rita Defour, Theodore James Lennna Jr., Melissa Salazar, Lisa Usher, Marlon Lennan, Lawrence Lennan, Trevor Lennan, Jaynee Melissa Lennan, Cludigale Vasquez, Brion Young and Norwin Lennan. His sons-in-law: Shelton Defour Sr, Elvis Usher Sr., Michael Dwayne Salazar, Trinidad Juan and Everal Trapp. His daughters-in-law: Marcia Lennan, Saigri Meza and Ashley Anderson. 32 grandchildren, 4 great granddaughters and 1 great grandson. His 2 sisters – Sonia Patnett and Pauline Jex His 2 brothers: Carlos Sabala and Sherman Juan He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Cayo won’t be the same without you “T”. Gone too soon my friend, Gone too soon! Travel well Theo – until we meet again!!!

PSU Expresses STRONGEST DETESTATION on the Perdomo WRITE-OFF The Public Service Union has joined the call of most of the nation to show “the strongest detestation towards” the Joshua Perdomo writeoff. It throws shame at the four ministers who, in committee, approved the motion so that it could then move to the Senate this coming Friday August 30, 2019. The PSU alluded to it being a ‘sad day’ since it was the same person, Hon. Saldivar, in charge of National Security that participated in this “dishonourable act.” He chaired the meeting and raised his hand in approval to continue giving this motion life as it is table to the Senate. The PSU stated that 40,000 is a matter of life and death for many Belizeans whilst the UDP administration might deem it insignificant. They officially call on the Prime Minister to recall this motion. The Belize Times does not see the Prime Minister allowing his arm to be twisted even as his Deputy Prime Minister might have goofed when he publicly tried to gain some points by stating he doesn’t agree with Cabinet colleagues on the Joshua Perdomo write-off. He might have broken a Cabinet rule of ministers NOT publicly criticizing Cabinet decisions even if you feel otherwise. This DPM might

have done the Trumpian thing: say anything just to get your base on your side. Trump is on his way out DPM; He gambled. The following is the actual PSU release. It will be small here but you can read it in its entirety on Belizetimes. biz.

Reaction to the Committee’s Yes Vote to Perdomo Write-Off By Oscar Mira PUP Standard Bearer for Belmopan August 27, 2018 Today a committee composed of Hon. John Saldivar as Chairman along with Hon. Elodio Aragon, Hon. Edmund Castro and Hon. Hugo Patt voted YES to forgive $40,500.00 owed by Joshua Perdomo the son of the Cabinet Secretary Carlos Perdomo. The reason given is that Joshua Perdomo cannot be located. I am so angry. First of all, many, many, young people beg for an opportunity to study, even at the high school level and cannot go because they do not have the money to do so. These children are forced into poverty and have very small chances of getting ahead. So many young people really need scholarships. They, instead, gave it to the son of the Cabinet Secretary of this UDP Government. When he came back from studying Forensic Genetics, he apparently did not return to work. He was let go. The Government asked him to pay back the money at a rate of 1000 dollars a month. He agreed but never paid anything. The Cabinet then agreed to forgive him the debt. This is nepotism at its worst. A person who did not need a scholarship got it. So many people need and are ignored. Then he came back and refused to work. Then he refused to pay back $1000 a month. He has a Masters, he could pay it back, but he refused. We all know that this is wrong. It is so wrong especially at this time of the year when so many students are struggling to get back to school. It is so wrong when many of us are struggling to buy school supplies for our children. $40,500 is a lot of money and could help hundreds of students that really, really need it. Every day parents who are struggling to make ends meet come to ask for help, not for money but for school bags, exercise books, because they know education is the only way out of poverty. Even when the story came out, everybody was shocked at the open, blatant nepotism displayed. They had a public hearing today. Everybody thought there was no way that it would actually pass. Yet today, even when the public all opposed this horrible, appalling move, John Saldivar as the Chairman of the committee, calmly voted YES to forgive the debt. Castro voted yes, Hugo Patt voted yes, Aragon voted yes. No reason was given, no explanation. They just said yes, we forgive $40,500 in debt that could have helped hundreds of needy Belizean students. Saldivar said YES, we will wipe off Joshua Perdomo’s debt. You should be ashamed of yourself Mr. Saldivar. You know it is wrong. The entire country knows it is wrong. It is open, blatant corruption. I shouldn’t have been surprised at John Saldivar since we all know the individual he has become, but, I still

They can afford it. But, they knew that the decision had been made. Saldivar as the chair of the committee Voted YES. Ed. Note: The ONE PUP member of the committee, Hon. Kareem Musa voted NO to the write-off. The People of Belize are seething at this one. Hurting!! This one touches the lives of their children directly. The UDP probably thought if they could get away with $400,000.00, twice, then Joshua’s $40,000.00 would be small change. The people will NOT forget this one.

2019 GASOLINE PRICES, US GALLON Gasoline prices, 26-August-2019: The average price of gasoline around the world is 8.40 Belize Dollar per gallon. However, there is substantial difference in these prices among countries. As a general rule, richer countries have higher prices while poorer countries and the countries that produce and export oil have significantly lower prices. One notable exception is the U.S. which is an economically advanced country but has low gas prices. The differences in prices across countries are due to the various taxes and subsidies for gasoline. All countries have access to the same petroleum prices of international markets but then decide to impose different taxes. As a result, the retail price of gasoline is different. THINK ABOUT IT THREE NEW SENATORS Congratulations are in order to Dr. Louis Zabaneh, Michel Chebat and Isabel Bennett. This is a powerful team. The Senate is a rubber-stamp as the opposition party is only allowed three members. There are representatives for the labour unions, the business community, and the N.G.O community. The government has six die-hard UDPs as senators and the president. A section of the churches are represented but satan has been able to contaminate the church appointee who invariably votes in favor of the government and corrupt practices. The Constitutional Opposition’s new team will bring a high quality of discussions which will keep the nation fully informed. HOME INVASION AND RAPE A week ago another home invasion took place. This time in Belize City. Two animals were able to get into a home early in the morning. Only one female was at home. They started ramsacking the place. One of them grabbed the woman and dragged her in the bedroom. Terrified she started begging for her life. The low-down creature used a knife at her throat and raped her. After wards he threatened her that if she ever said anything he would return and kill her. It was morning and she could clearly identify the persons, especially the rapist. Despite her ordeal and death threats, this brave woman reported this horrible crime. Her identification was clear and detailed enough for the Police to capture the rapist. The woman is thinking of relocating, maybe even leave Belize. If so the rapist will get out of jail on bail and eventually walk free of the charge. He will continue to rape other women. A rapist is like a murder who is emboldened when he commits a crime and is able to get away with it. Thieves, robbers and burglars also have this attitude. Part of fighting crime is to make sure the police arrest the correct persons and gather enough evidence to obtain a conviction. Cases like this one should be heard within months as the longer it takes the more likelihood it will fall apart. On Another matter we are informed that a home-invasion crew has been operating out of Hattieville and have been successfully carrying out their invasions in Cayo, Belmopan and up North. We are told of three successful home invasions and in one case eighteen thousand in cash and jewelry and, in another, a rape was committed. It is not every home invasion that is reported. Some victims, especially where women are raped, and threatened with death, prefer to suffer in silence, rather than have their names put on police charge sheets and become public. SERIOUS FALLOUT There is an ongoing backlash against the Perdomo loan writeoff, the butane monopoly and the 90 million dollars tax evasion. These are the topics of talk in the streets and homes of the country. For the ordinary citizens it sounds too incredible to be true. Why not collect the taxes and use the funds to reduce the cost of petroleum and in return reduce the cost of living? People are hurting out here. The cost of living is just too high for thousands of Belizeans. Life was never this cruel to poor, innocent Belizeans. Why not collect the taxes from the rich land owners and subsidize fishermen and farmers so food can be cheaper? How could the government so blatantly be helping certain rich landowners and offer no relief to poor families and the struggling population. What a lie, to tell Belizeans that the government cannot collect the 90 million dollars worth of taxes when there are easy ways to collect taxes. Who doesn’t pay are taken to court. If they cannot pay, a portion of the land is forfeited and auctioned to cover the taxes. It is an unbelievable act of arrogance and abuse of power which is taking place. These politicians are really out of control. There is another angle to this ‘facey’ move. This type of authoritarian law is a political move. Such a law allowing big landowners to pocket many millions by not paying anything for all the years of arrears is only done when a government is planning early elections. Such a massive abuse of the legislative process is not the result of humanitarian or altruistic motives. This is hustling and this

too is corruption. Please note that there is no list of farmers whose crops have failed from an unkind act of nature. No list or explanation as to why certain persons are being favored in a land where poverty and hard times are on the rise. General elections are not far away. It won’t be in November next year. It won’t be in September next year. We don’t think general elections will be after Patrick Faber and John Saldivar split the UDP following their leadership battle in February 2020. To repeat general elections is not far off. We will see if certain section of poor voters can still be bribed come Election Day. The word needs to get out, take their money and vote them out. ORANGE WALK IS ANGRY Residents of Orange Walk Town and surrounding areas are angry over the massive government negligence that has led to the poisoning of the New River. It is the worst river poisoning to take place. Each day thousands of dead fish are floating up on the river banks. Last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, some three to five tons of dead fishes were carted away to reduce the horrible smell now polluting the atmosphere. This is in addition to the horrible toxic stench coming from poisoned river. Given the lousy governance of the country it is really no surprise that the environmental officials have completely messed up. Their excuse that the lack of rain is part of the problem is not acceptable. They knew and they know that the sugar factory as well as other smaller entities have been engaged in wholescale dumping of waste and chemicals in the river. Failure to carry out monthly inspections is a failure of the Ministry and the Minister. This crisis is not a sudden, over-night problem. This is a massive buildup of months and years of dumping in sections of the river which was already under siege from ongoing dumping. Now that the quantities of toxic chemicals has overwhelmed the river, the river has been killed. Long areas of New River is dead and so is everything that lives in it, from tiny fishes to the awesome crocodiles. This is what governmental negligence looks like. This is the result of the political incompetence of the Minister and his government. Ed Note: The views expressed above are of the writer and not necessarily those of the PUP. Hurricane Dorian The Gleaner Hurricane Dorian posed an increasing menace to Florida as it pushed over open waters Thursday after leaving limited damage in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Dorian was expected to grow into a potentially devastating Category 3 hurricane before hitting the U.S. mainland late Sunday or early Monday somewhere between the Florida Keys and southern Georgia. Across much of Florida’s east coast, residents began flocking to the grocery stores and gas stations, stocking up in anticipation of the storm. There were lines at many gas stations in South Florida as people began filling gas cans and topping off their gas tanks. Some residents using community Facebook groups gave updates on new shipments of water to restock the nearly empty shelves at local grocery stores. Josefine Larrauri, a retired translator, went to a Publix supermarket in Miami only to find empty shelves in the water section and store employees were unsure of when new cases would arrive. Larrauri fled to Orlando two years ago when Hurricane Irma was expected to hit South Florida as a Category 5 storm and ended up shifting west to land on the Lower Keys and then Marco Island. This time, Larrauri said the uncertainty made her nervous. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for the state’s eastern and central counties Wednesday and planned to visit the National Hurricane Center in Miami on Thursday morning. County governments along the state’s central east coast distributed sandbags and many residents rushed to warehouse retailers to load up on water, canned food and emergency supplies.

Jamaican Gov’t Labs Upgraded To Analyse Sugar, Salts And Fats In Foods The Gleaner For the first time, Jamaica will have the capacity to analyse the sugar, salt and fat content of food products. This follows the upgrading of laboratories of the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) and the Scientific Research Council (SRC) to conduct these tests, at a cost of $20 million, through funding from the International Development Research Centre of Canada. The upgraded labs were officially launched during a ceremony at the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston on Tuesday. Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Christopher Tufton, said this historically significant initiative will assist the Government in its drive to reduce the high prevalence of non-communicable diseases, which he said is one of the greatest public health threats. He noted that studies reveal that one in three Jamaicans has hypertension; one in eight is diabetic; and one in two is overweight or obese, and as a consequence, seven of every 10 deaths are linked to this NCD epidemic.

Amazon fires: Brazil bans land clearance blazes for 60 days

Measles: Four European nations lose eradication status BBC.CO.UK Measles has returned to four European nations previously seen as free of the illness, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The disease is no longer considered eradicated in Albania, the Czech Republic, Greece and the UK. “We are backsliding, we are on the wrong track,” said Kate O’Brien of the WHO’s Immunization Department. Measles is a highly contagious and potentially fatal illness that causes coughing, rashes and fever. Countries are declared measles-free when there is no endemic transmission for 12 months in a specific geographic area. Ms O’Brien said all four European nations that have lost their eradication status have “extremely high” vaccination coverage. “This is the alarm bell that is ringing around the world: being able to achieve high national coverage is not enough, it has to be achieved in every community, and every family for every child,” she said. Health experts warn that lies about the measles vaccine have allowed the illness to spread in certain areas or communities. All regions of the world showed an increase in measles bar the Americas, which saw a minor decline - although the US registered its highest number of cases in 25 years. Close to 365,000 cases have been reported worldwide this year, the WHO said, almost three times as many as in the first half of 2018.

Tufton stressed that the unhealthy diet of the population is a major factor in the development of obesity, hypertension and diabetes, with the major contributor being the consumption of excess fats, sodium and sugar. Therefore, the upgrade of the SRC and BSJ labs will provide baseline information on the concentrations of these ingredients in food products, which will enable the government to establish evidence-based national guidelines, standards and regulations

BBC News Brazil has banned setting fires to clear land for 60 days in response to a massive increase in the number of fires in the Amazon rainforest. The decree was signed by President Jair Bolsonaro, who has faced intense criticism at home and abroad for failing to protect the rainforest. A leading Brazilian environmentalist warned on Wednesday that the “worst of the fire is yet to come”. South American countries will meet next week to discuss the crisis. It remains unclear what impact the ban will have, as environmentalists say the overwhelming majority of forest clearance in the Brazilian Amazon is already illegal and enforcement is lax. The Amazon - a vital carbon store that slows down the pace of global warming - has seen more than 80,000 fires break out so far this year - a 77% rise on the same period in 2018. Environmentalists say the increase is due in part to policies enacted by Mr Bolsonaro’s administration.

for these ingredients, to ensure that more healthy food options are available for consumption by the public. Results of laboratory analyses will raise public awareness of the composition of fats, sodium and sugar in commonly consumed foods. Tufton noted that through this initiative “we are now enabling, empowering the consumers to appreciate that information and to use that information to protect the vul-

nerable, especially our young people in schools.” In the meantime, the Health Minister said that while the Government still has “to win souls and get buy-in to the cause,” he is encouraged that industry players have begun to come on board with the Ministry’s healthier food consumption campaign, starting with the reformulation of sugary drinks “to get admission into schools”.
