LCA mountain sport centre AHEC Wooden Building Competition

1st prize

A small sport centre in the alps is the excuse to start thinking over sustainibility and wooden building. Traditional shape and innovation are working togheter to create flexible use of the building whereas eco-friendly materials and technologies are studied to reduce the impact of the construction, avoiding the waste of energy and land.

TRA sant andrea mantua

As one of the major works of 15th century Renaissance architecture in Northern Italy, Sant’Andrea in Mantua is also considered Leon Battista Alberti’s masterpiece. The use of light is really evocative whereas a perfectly studied contrast between light and shadows distinguishes this church from other Alberti’s production. The aim of the course was to analyze deeply the proportionality of the volumes in order to recreate with 3D modelling and rendering the soft and filtred natural lighting of the church.

LAP2 il borgo forli

The typical italian historical city centre is a complex reality to deal with. The concept was to recreate the fragmentation of medieval hamlet in modern terms with the use of new materials such as corten which recalls the colour of traditional italian bricks. The facades are arranged with the variety of shapes inspired by the nearby multiform streets.

LAP3 the worm florence

Working in the suburbia of Florence, facing the problems of a built nobody-land and trying to sew up the pre-existent surrounding buildings to the near Arno river giving quality to the area: this was the target of this third year project. Winding like snakes while dipping themselfs to the water, the buildings are dripping from the pre-existent boring suburbia getting more articulated and wild as approaching the river. As live animals, the inside organization is flexible: the buildings are hosting a basketball court, a co-housing complex, a student hostel, a library, a cafè and an auditorium.

LAU

darsena

ferrara

A huge neglected area in Ferrara, close to the city centre and confined by the ancient rinascimental wall and the Po di Volano river. Combining preservation and conservation with imperatives of modern planning and economic requirements of real estate the challenge was to relate with the complexity of the nearby historical urban tissue and raise the perception of this area as the link between the city and the river, togheter with the monumental presence of the wall. Facing a complex process as an urban planning, the target was to solve some issues about mobility and perception of the wall landmark. A comb-structured park, which connects the wall to the river, binds with a new bycicle bridge to create a waterfront with facilities, seconding the love that Ferrara people feels for the wall’s park and outdoor activities.

AMB 13x13 house rimini

When it comes to architecture design, the sustainable issue is often left behind. The aim of this project was indeed to start working out an idea for a single family house which is based completely on passive energy use, using the less necessary provision of cooling and heating systems. Filling the simple volume of a cube of 13 metres per side was the only basic instruction to follow. The obvious second step was to analyze deeply the climatic data of the project area. Rain, winds, sun height and temperature, examining the data to come out with the right strategy. And then it came the idea. The summer overheating was the main problem to avoid. So the cube offsets itself to create a light and sun-shading filtering case, separated from the building and slanting to the sun, protecting in a better way the windows on summer season.

Sustainable planning was not only focused on the building itself, but also on city and neighborhood scale. Sustainability is not only a matter of construction but also the ability of creating spaces that are easily reachable on foot, by bike or using public transportation. According to this target the design of the paths of the area is structured in order to get easily to the nearby bus stops and to sew up with the pre existing cycling path. With the aim of avoiding the heat-island effect the area is organized by common and private green areas, taking also advantage of the presence of the small lake nearby. The trees are chosen between the typical flora of the zone by utility criteria to shield houses and paths from sun, eyesight or noise.
