PIECES FOR SMALL SPACES 2014 26th - 30th November 2014 Lucy Guerin Inc Studio

28 Batman Street, West Melbourne

#P4SS2014

Note from Lucy Guerin It is hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since we first presented Pieces for Small Spaces. This program began in 2005 in the original small space, a room down the hall from our old office in Miles St Southbank. Since then, 50 choreographers have made short works for this season with an emphasis on experimenting with an idea that extends their practice and focuses on exploring movement in the studio. It is important to the company that these exceptional artists continue to question dance as a form and to work with the body as a medium of communication. It’s inspiring to have them as part of our year’s program and offers a stimulating context in which to work. The women in this season range from choreographers just starting out to more experienced makers. They have all been asked to try something that extends their practice into less familiar territory. But beyond that there has been no brief. It’s always interesting to consider each season and see if there are any threads running through it, is there something people seem to be working with? What I see emerging in many of this year’s works is the creation of unique worlds, with a tone and mood that is unusual and distinct. Most of the works involve a physical exploration, but then just tilt over into areas of personality, character and comment; this play between movement and theatricality, sensation and meaning is delicate but present. I would like to say a really heartfelt thank you to all the people who have assisted us with this initiative over the last 10 years. The Angior Foundation have been our mainstay with generous funding since 2008 which has been crucial to the ongoing success of Pieces for Small Spaces. Other much appreciated contributors include Harold Mitchell Foundation, Myer Foundation, Besen Family Foundation, Bluebottle, Megafun, and all our amazing Give Now and Pozible supporters. Thanks too, to The Australia Council for the Arts, Arts Victoria and City of Melbourne for their ongoing support of Lucy Guerin Inc.
