Note from Lucy Guerin, Artistic Director This is the eleventh edition of Pieces for Small Spaces and one of my favourite moments in the Lucy Guerin Inc calendar. This year’s makers are all young choreographers who have taken the brief for this season absolutely to heart. The idea for Pieces for Small Spaces is simple. Choreographers are given time, space and basic technical support to create a short work that extends their practice. They are encouraged to use this opportunity to realise their ideas physically, through research on their own bodies and the bodies of others. This year’s choreographers have been particularly impressive in the way they have challenged themselves to experiment with the form of dance and how it relates to audience experience. Melanie Lane, our Resident Director for this year and co-curator of Pieces for Small Spaces has been mentoring them during the process of creation and they have also called in their own collaborators for feedback. Watching how dance in Melbourne has changed over these eleven years is very inspiring. Ideas are shifting, questions are being asked, and the importance of dance as a medium for understanding human experience in a unique and essential way remains central. I would like to say a huge thank you to Claire Bradley Duke who has produced this season with the expert guidance of our one and only Annette Vieusseux. And Melanie Lane has been a key figure this year as a co-curator and mentor, thanks Mel! Once again the dream team of Alice Flemming and James Lipari from First In Last Out have worked technical wonders in the studio. We warmly thank the Angior Family Foundation for their generous funding since 2008 that has been crucial to the ongoing success of Pieces for Small Spaces. And a massive thank you to all our amazing Give Now and Pozible supporters. We are truly appreciative of The Australia Council for the Arts, Arts Victoria and City of Melbourne for their ongoing support of Lucy Guerin Inc. And big thanks to the Board of Lucy Guerin Inc for their belief in the Company’s goals and activities. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Enterprise Park Choreographed by: James Batchelor Performed by: Sarah Bruce, Chloe Chignell, Luigi Vescio Sound design: Morgan Hickinbotham Postmodern philosophers and social theorists reflecting on the rise of the consumer society have long contemplated the idea that objects are a dialogue with the self. Abstracted from function, objects become a mirror; they reflect back ideas and characteristics we wish to see in ourselves. In a collection, the object becomes the subject of affection, and its value becomes intrinsically tied to its function within a series. The process of searching for, ordering, manipulating and combining objects becomes the setting for an automythology, a seduction of the self. Thank you: To all of the creative team, Pozible supporters, secondment Jacqueline Trapp and LGI for the commission.
The Air Reef Choreographed & performed by: Amber McCartney Sound design: Alexander Edward Winter Sculpture: Amber McCartney & Josh Northcott “He falls up into that column of air. High above us, in a band of elastic atmosphere...white by the sun. - Andrew Kertesz Thank you: A huge thank you to Melanie Lane, Alex Winter, Josh Northcott, Samuel K, the amazing staff at LGI & the production team. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nah Nuthin
Nah Nuthin is a reveal of processing the task of living underneath a dominant culture, as a hybrid. In this work my task is to assemble a family tree before my time is up. The soundscape includes a song called The Irex. The Irex was the name of a boat that took children of the Stolen Generation from their families on the mainland in Queensland, over to the mission on Palm Island. The families would sing this song to their children as they were taken away. The use of this song is not to indicate a family connection to it, but to disseminate a wider knowledge of the song as an important part of Australian history, and to underpin the difficult task of assembling a family tree. Thank you: To Arts House, LGI, Jessie Lloyd, Melanie Lane, Lucy Guerin, Alice Fleming, James Lipari & Claire Bradley Duke. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
