Just as the trend of minimalism for summer 2021 was coined at the Prada and Jil Sander shows, we translated this fashion concept into a photographic series. The reduced black and white fashion dominates and works with geometric cuts. The fashion offers space for the expressiveness of the wearer and creates a space for staging. You started your career in WWE as “Maxine” but transitioned into acting in various movie projects such as Seized and Lucha Underground, did you find this career move difficult? What made you decide to give up wrestling to become an actress? Yes I actually did find it very difficult.... It was nerve racking to leave something I was so comfortable with to start something totally new. But I stuck it out and I'm not going anywhere. I left WWE because I felt I hit a ceiling and wasn’t being challenged enough in a creative way. It was challenging, but it was definitely the right decision for me.
We know representation for women of color is an important factor to you, what was the process like making your own path in the industry and breaking the mold for the characters you’ve developed? I really wanted to continue to work on projects that have a real story to tell. I want an opportunity to use my voice, but also help others who go unnoticed, those who are disenfranchised. The process has not been easy at all...but, If I don’t put in the effort to have other voices heard, how will any change happen in this industry?
What made you decide to transition from actress to executive producer? I started to think I’m over here auditioning for other people's ideas. Ideas that were great, but I still saw all these other ideas with a real story to tell. And they just weren’t getting the attention they deserved. So I thought to myself, why not help with the ideas that I really care about, with those real stories, and go out and develop and build out these ideas myself. And now here I am, doing just that! Being a female executive producer in Hollywood is huge and rare, what advice do you have for other women who want to follow in your footsteps?
Having a great story, script, or idea is only half of it. What really matters is learning people skills, that’s definitely the biggest part. There are so many different personalities and clashing opinions out here, so focus on navigating that. Find an amazing mentor if possible to watch, listen,and learn from. Then hit the ground running and don’t stop! What is the biggest difference between working in front of the camera to now being behind the scenes in developing different projects? Has there been any challenges or hurdles you’ve had to overcome? Yes! To me those are two totally different mindsets. Producing I have to be able to go from creative back to business with the flip of a switch. In front of the camera I have to keep my creative juices going and not let anything else fog up that creativity. Jumping back and forth can be challenging sometimes. When it comes to representation and diversity, how do you think the industry has been adapting? Where do you want to see the industry in the next 5 years? I think the industry is slowly moving forward. I hope to soon see way more women and diverse people receiving equal opportunities. There’s still a lot to be done but it’s moving in the right direction. When it comes to storytelling, what is your main goal and process? I want to help tell stories that have meaning behind them. Right now my slate of projects in production are all based on true stories. My process is first finding ideas and stories that move me. Then I like to put together visuals. I'm a big believer in decks and sizzles, they really bring it all together. They help people to see a story, not just read one. How do you showcase different communities in the works that you produce? What kind of stories do you gravitate towards? Like I mentioned earlier I tend to gravitate towards true stories, but I also connect with deep touching stories that may even make people uncomfortable. Sometimes the stories that tackle the parts of the world we don’t want to look at can make the biggest impact. I’m currently working on all stories representing people of color and hopefully this will help bring more representation into the industry. Has it been difficult for you to be taken seriously as a female woman of color in this male driven sector within the producing industry? YES YES!!! It has been very difficult for me to just concentrate on my end goal . NO ONE is stopping from that. In what other ways do you see your career progressing? I really feel I have so much more to accomplish and do. I want to continue to produce amazing projects, but also challenge myself in front of the camera. I’m also interested and open to learning more on the directing side, maybe that’s where you’ll see me a year or two from now, who knows? We know you are used to being in front of the camera, has being an executive producer changed your outlook on the industry, character development, and storytelling over all? Producing definitely changes your outlook in the sense that seeing something from start to finish is absolutely incredible. A few of my projects started with only me and a piece of paper. It’s just crazy to see how all of the pieces fit together and that more goes into the process than just writing a story and making it. Do you have any upcoming projects that you can share with our readers? Yes! I’m currently executive producing a series based on the Miami River Cops with Mark Canton (Power franchise ) (300). I’m also producing the FUBU scripted series with Daymond John . What is the biggest lesson you have learned during your ongoing career? I can’t pick one ... there have been many lessons I have learned throughout my life and career and I believe I will have many more to learn. That’s the wonderful side of living and taking risks.
