SUMMER

FALL

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Fall is here; leaves are turning yellow and mornings are chilly, just perfect for

a thin jacket and a trendy scarf! It is an exciting time when nature showcases a variety of deep and beautiful colors. I love that stylists get to play with fun accessories and create edgy looks!

I saw it, I knew it had to be it. Model’s confidence is the most important in this image; confidence is the key to success.

We are now accepting editorials for the Fall/Winter Fashion Issue coming up in November!

Unforgettable

EXPERTS KNOW THAT BEAUTY NEVER GOES UNBALANCED. PLAYING WITH COLORS IS FUN, BUT BOLD LIPS BELOW DRAMATIC EYES CREATE AN OVERWHELMING EFFECT, DISTRACTING FROM A WOMAN’S NATURAL BEAUTY. THIS IS WHY IT’S VITAL TO EMPHASIZE ONE FACIAL FEATURE AND ENHANCE THE OTHERS THROUGH DELICATE BLENDING. USING A DEEP CERULEAN BLUE AND DEWY SOFT ROSE, MAKEUP ARTIST ISABELLA FORGET PAINTS A MASTERPIECE TO REMEMBER.

Anine Bing - born in Denmark and raised in Sweden, Anine has been a part of the fashion industry since she was 15. She started as a model, traveling throughout Europe and then the wider world, learning every element of the fashion industry. Over the years she has collaborated with a number of designers, and these collaborations in turn inspired her to start her own eponymous fashion brand. ANINE BING was launched in June 2012 and the line has been well received and sold with great success globally. Anine Bing says: “I started the collection because I had a vision of a label and a line that epitomized everything I had seen and done in the fashion industry until now. I wanted to challenge the industry by stepping away from traditional seasons. I believe that the consumer behavior has changed drastically over the last years and I wanted to create a brand that follows the movement and need of a modern woman.

LUCY’S 23

“I’ve always been fascinated by the contrast between hard and soft, pretty girl and rock chick. Every woman I know wants to be beautiful and yet have an edge at the same time.” “The label is tailored towards city girls, who travel the world, who are fashion forward and who are passionate about art and music and want to “wear their lifestyle” day and night.” The Los Angeles based brand is trans-seasonal and new items are constantly added to the collection - all in keeping with Anine’s rock bohemian style. Pieces are made with the most luxurious fabrics and details, manufactured in the US and in Europe to ensure the highest quality. Anine continues: “The fit and the quality of the pieces are my highest priority - along with providing the modern urban woman with a stylish, flexible wardrobe that embodies the bohemian rock look.” - courtesy of Anine Bing

LOES VRIJ IS A DUTCH FASHION DESIGNER, BASED IN AMSTERDAM. IN 2012, AFTER HAVING WORKED AS A LAWYER FOR MANY YEARS, SHE DECIDED TO TAKE HER LIFELONG PASSION FOR FASHION TO A MORE PROFESSIONAL LEVEL BY TAKING LESSONS AT THE AMSTERDAM FASHION ACADAMY ‘VOGUE’. AFTER HER GRADUATION LOES STARTED A FASHION LABEL UNDER HER NAME, PRODUCING HIGH END WOMEN’S BAGS. DRIVEN BY THE URGE FOR QUALITY AND ORIGINALITY AND INSPIRED BY THE CLEAN POWERFUL SHAPES OF THE SIXTIES, LOES SOUGHT TO DESIGN A NEW HIGH QUALITY CONCEPT, WHICH RESULTED IN HER FIRST BAG NAMED ‘GLORIOUS GUN’. THIS LITTLE WRAP AROUND BAG - POWERFUL AND ELEGANT ON THE OUTSIDE - HOLDS HER SECRETS ON THE INSIDE, WHERE YOU FIND FEATURES THAT KEEP ALL ESSENTIALS FOR THE DAY FOR A LADY ON THE GO.

Interview RAMONA: One of my favorite things about your S/S 16 collection is the androgynous style it has, so versatile! Where do you get your inspiration from? KOLIN: The brand name STYL.MYL. is actually a play on a

colloquial term “stylo-mylo”, which is used in a tongue-in-cheek manner to describe someone who is uniquely stylish. In the same vein, I try to incorporate this quality of irony and humour when it comes to designing for each collection. And as the brand is all about celebrating individuality and diversity, what you will see in our past and present collections is an eclectic range of non-binary clothing that channels a nonchalant vibe, perhaps even with a hint of kooky off-beat quality. Inspiration wise, it could be anything, from the most regular objects found in our daily lives, to an architecture or work of an artist. But generally they are things that people can easily relate to. For the S/S 16 collection, the inspiration came simply from house doodles. Conveniently named as “House”, the collection features structural silhouettes detailed with linear lines and angular shapes.

But

more notably, the collection features mostly cotton-based fabrics, so the seemingly low-key styles are relax and comfortable enough, just like what one would wear around in the house.

RAMONA: What is your favorite piece and why? KOLIN: I particularly like the asymmetric chambray shirt, which is

essentially a hybrid between a regular shirt and a poncho. I like the mutated feel of it, and the lightheartedness that it portrays on its wearer.

RAMONA: Besides shape, are color and texture important to you and why? KOLIN: Definitely colour and texture are important elements in all our collections, as they not only add dimension, but also provide the link to a coherent collection. As you will see in all our collections, we feature black and white aplenty, with muted shades like navy and grey. This is a colour scheme that we repeat season after season, as they best reflect the industrial vibe of our clothing, and therefore has become part of our brand DNA. As for texture, generally I prefer working with fabrics that are sturdier and comfortable, so we tend to use a lot of menswear fabrics and trims, mostly cotton base, in our collections.

LUCY’S 27

RAMONA: What is your favorite and least favorite part of being a designer? KOLIN: The favourite part of being a designer, for me, is to have the creative freedom to express my own sense of aesthetics in the form of clothing. The least favourite part is definitely the business aspect of running a brand, as it entails a designer to sometimes having to compromise his/her design in order to ensure commerciality.

RAMONA: What is your advice to fellow or new designers? KOLIN: When someone in the industry tells you to always expect and plan for the worst, you know that person is not lying.Developing and growing a brand demands absolute commitment in terms of time, effort and resources. In the process of doing so, there will be countless hurdles that might set you back from achieving the desired results. Things like collection not well-received by buyers or customers, failure to meet deadlines, incorrect sizing, faulty products or materials... are all part and parcel of what an independent designer has to deal with. So always be prepared for the unexpected and be ready with a plan B if things do not turn out exactly right.
