an interview with

LUCY’S 12

SAMANTHA PLEET by SUMMER LEE @summerannelee Samantha Pleet is a New York City-based independent fashion brand, founded in 2007 by Samantha and her husband, Patrick. Their goal is to provide whimsical and dreamy apparel to the magically-inclined woman, which they have achieved through their twenty meticulously curated collections. Well-known for her trance-inducing prints and use of fairytale motifs, Samantha’s line began with dresses, rompers, and separates, but has expanded to now include denim, outerwear, and swim. Some celebrity fans include Jenny Slate, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Lena Dunham, Tavi Gevinson, Lorde, HAIM, Jenny Lewis, and Meredith Graves. The brand also receives regular media attention by publications such as Vogue, Nylon, Rookie, Refinery 29, Galore, Wonderland, and Oyster. On a chilly afternoon in Brooklyn, I sat down with Samantha in her beautiful home to inquire about her inspirations, motivations, and musings on motherhood.

Q: You are a self-proclaimed “designer of magical clothing”. What does that mean to you? A: If you look back at the designers that inspire me, like Elsa Schiaparelli, it’s all about a sense of whimsical details and prints. I think since I started my line ten years ago, we’ve really been known for that - and for having a sense of humor. It’s not like anything else out there. It’s really my goal to create clothes that are pieces of art onto themselves, like you’re wearing a painting. Like my very first print—the illuminated print—has unicorns and mystical plants and there’s just definitely a sense of magic in it. It just comes out. I think my customers love to feel that way too, draped in something so magical. Q: Your Spring Summer 2017 collection, “Midsummer Dream”, featured a Black Wallpaper Print inspired by your grandmother’s house. Do you have a more emotional connection to that print? A: My grandmother is my biggest muse. She is incredible - her house is like a miniature Madonna inn. All the wallpaper is from the sixties, everything is so curated with all of these knick-knacks and art and paintings. She decorated it all herself, and it’s like her masterpiece. That’s what she did for her job, basically, was this house. It’s a work of art in itself. Whenever I go there, I always maybe over-do the photos. I once

had a film shoot and had sixteen people in her house, and she had to take a Valium and was like ‘Never again’. So now, every time I go, it makes it even more special because I’ll sneak a friend into a room and we’ll take some photos, because I don’t want to scare her.

So, I had this vision actually, for a photograph with someone wearing a dress

with matching wallpaper, and that’s where it came from. My husband and I were just up there for dinner and we brought a few things, and were like ‘Let’s just shoot them in the bathroom really quick!’ I feel so lucky to have such a magical place like that. Q: Your prints are very whimsical, and have featured flowers, unicorns, and even Alice in Wonderland motifs. Are fairytales a large source of inspiration for you? A: Oh, definitely. I’m very nostalgic. I had this really magical upbringing, and I was really into reading stories, and dressing up, and creating plays. I feel like even now, I’ll go on a vacation with friends, and we’ll end up doing a beautiful photoshoot, and we’ll enter that realm. That’s something that I really love, and don’t want to ever lose as I grow up. I think it’s really important to hold on to some of that nostalgia. Now that I have my own daughter, it’s really coming out again. I’m so excited to show her all these stories. I feel like this is our folklore - these fairytales are handed down through generations for hundreds of years. It’s something that’s almost like, a piece of history, and you can’t avoid it in anything that we do. I just can’t help but love to explore that, and use it as a medium for making something relevant today that I see in our society. History repeats itself, and it’s almost like a word of warning. Fairytales - the original ones - have a dark side to them, and that’s what I’m really interested in. My clothes definitely have a darkness in all their beauty and happiness. Even in the prints for our summer collection, there are beautiful shells, and landscapes, and anchors, but then you have that hand, drowning in the water. I think that really describes what Samantha Pleet is all about. It’s a little hauntingly beautiful. Q: Do you feel your designs are more vintage-inspired, or more modern? A: I don’t think they’re vintage-inspired at all. I think that all designers reference history somewhat, because you have to start from somewhere, but I hand-drape and do all my own patterns. When I first started, people used to pigeonhole me into the vintagelooking-designer-thing, also because that was what was stylish at the time. I love vintage, but I really love making things that are relevant today. I don’t follow trends - I wouldn’t necessarily say my clothes are trendy, but there’s something timeless about them. I love to experiment with new details, and draping, like when I did the Tabernacle dress with the twist details. That’s something I’ve been doing for like the last six years. It has this extremely modern look, but it also looks timeless. There’s almost like a renaissancemodernism to everything I do. Q: How do you choose what colors go into your designs? A: I imply a lot of color theory. I went to school for fine art before I started fashion, and it’s something I’ve always loved experimenting with - looking to see what colors go with other colors, coming up with unexpected palettes. It’s something I do in the beginning of the design process. I have tons of swatches, and I’m making custom colors, and holding up everything next to each other and trying to create a story. I also look at everything and think ‘This needs to be a flattering color that you’ll actually want to wear, but a little bit unexpected’. You also want to have a balanced collection - I like to have the same amount of warm and cool. It’s very important to me, what it looks like on a

rack, when it’s all laying together. I like to have a spectrum effect, like a little rainbow. Q: Some of your pieces feature beautiful embroidery touches. How do you use embroidery in your designs in ways that you cannot use fabric? A: We do production at a small fair trade factory in India, and people there are amazing at embroidery. So we thought, ‘Oh, look at all these really traditional embroidery techniques and designs! What if we came up with something totally modern and unexpected, and employed that to typical embroidery?’ At the time that we started doing this, I hadn’t really seen a lot of people doing that. I hand-drew all of the motifs, like the little icons and badges that I would then embroider onto the clothing. It just came out so amazing. The three-dimensionality of it just feels like more of an object that you’re creating. The first time I did it, back in 2011 or something, I took velvet fabric and I embroidered stars on it and made it look like a galaxy. It was so three-dimensional and beautiful. Some stars were bigger, some smaller, and it looked like it was this magical cloth. It took so long to figure out how to factory-make it, and when it finally came out, it was beautiful. Then the next time I did it, I did the Joan of Arc motif - I took objects that I felt represented her life - I had an arrow with a head chopped off, a hand, I had the Joan of Arc head, and swords, and a braid, and I took those things and created this all-over embroidery. It was really like you were in that world when you were wearing it. Then I also created a seal for her, on top of a cape dress, where it was her head and hearts and drips, and all these magical motifs that I drew and then we scanned into the computer, redrew it, then sent it to the factory and picked our three colors. It’s just really amazing what you can do. I did the same treatment with Queen Elizabeth I for Fall - I just felt it was so relevant to do Queen Elizabeth, especially right now with this yearning for a strong female leader. She was the most educated woman of her generation and had an entire era named after her.

For Summer/Spring ’17 which is out now, we did these little embroidered

lime slices that kind of give a refreshing twist and make you look like a cocktail - and they’re removable with magnets! I feel like maybe I should sell them individually! Q: Are you currently working on your Summer/Spring 2018 line? What are you pulling inspiration from? A: I can’t tell you that! I wish, but it’s all still top secret! However, I can say that I am going to have shoes launching for Summer/Spring 2018! Q: Has becoming a mother influenced your creativity, or given you new inspirations for your designs? A: First of all, something to say about that - I feel like there’s a stigma for women about getting work done when you have a baby. People come up to me all the time and ask if I’ve had to step back from my line after having a baby, and I’m like ‘No, actually, it was completely the opposite!’ I felt like I had to double down, and work harder because now I have another mouth to feed. I also think in our society now, the gender roles are not so strict. My husband is the one who wakes up in the morning and makes breakfast for all of us. We take turns. Luckily we work together, so he’s home too. He lets me go out all the time and network, get things done - he’s like ‘You should go out and have fun!’ - but also, he’s more of a homebody. The two of us together make a team, and I feel like our work has only gotten better. We’ve learned how to prioritize our time. We got to the point in our early thirties where we were just

going home, watching movies, not really doing anything in the evenings, and then I felt this need to have someone to nurture and teach and learn from and grow with. Having a baby, for me, has just been a way to revisit all these things. I want her to have a really happy life, and enjoy her childhood. I think that’s really important. When I look back, all of the artists that I love have had children - even in the most creative times of their lives. I think it’s just this other stage of my life, I think it’s different, but I think it’s bringing me such new creative energy.

I think now I’m being more inclusive in my designs - having my body

going through what it did through the pregnancy and postpartum, I realized that not everybody wants to wear extremely form-fitting bodice dresses. I really feel that I’ve been bringing in new details to bring a flattering silhouette to many different body types, like using draw strings and elastic and really sexy ways. A lot of the things in my Spring/Summer collection would really work on pregnant women! I actually want to do a photoshoot featuring pregnant women. I feel like there’s a void for younger moms from our generation who want to look sexy and not wear a muumuu. Throughout my pregnancy I wanted to wear really form-fitting knits, and really show off my body. Now I want to wear looser silhouettes because I still can’t fit into my pants - this dress is amazing because it’s got the drawstring and the high waist, and it kind of drapes, and it’s still really sexy, and it has a little elastic in the back to help fit my breasts because I’m breast-feeding. Then I tried it on my size two model for my look book and it looks great on her too, and I’m like a size six and it’s working. It’s very important for me to have things be very adjustable, because people’s bodies fluctuate. I think it’s so important to be comfortable in your clothing. So, it’s been a huge learning experience. Q: How would you describe the woman who wears your designs? Who are you designing for? A: I’m designing for a smart and sexy woman who is not afraid of their femininity, and wants to show what they’re all about with their clothes. Q: Do you design for yourself, in a way? A: I definitely do, but I can’t only design for myself, because I get obsessed with one or two outfits like everybody else. My friends are a huge influence - I always think of what they want to be wearing. I’m always inspired by people I find inspiring and what they’re wearing, like musicians, comedians, and actors. I’m so lucky to have such a creative community around me. Especially also through Instagram, meeting new people, all these creative women, I’m like ‘I want you in my clothes! I want to make clothes for you. I want to make what you’re looking for.’ Q: Every collection of yours features silhouettes and shapes that are so unique to your line. Can you tell me about the process of making your patterns? A: I’m actually more of a draper than a pattern-maker. I usually start by just draping the fabric around my form and creating the dream pair of shorts that I want to make, or the dream dress. Then I twist the fabric around in interesting ways to make details, and then I trace that onto pattern paper, then I make changes. Like, ‘Oh, this needs to be wider at the hip,’ or ‘I need to do this trim instead’, and then I make it again. Then I make more notes and fit notes for my factory, then submit my pattern and my muslin to my factory, and then I my actual sample that’s made on a really good machine comes back. Then we show that to buyers and decide what gets made into

LUCY’S 16

production, then start production, get a production sample, fit that - it’s a process! Q: You have done such beautiful collaborations with painter Jenna Gribbon! How did you two start working together? A: For the first collaboration I had with Jenna Gribbon, we were going to do a trade. I was going to give her some clothes and she was going to do a portrait of me. Then I said I would actually love to do a collaboration with her, and asked if she would be interested in doing some prints for us. She said she would love that, and that she couldn’t wait to wear her paintings. The idea just sounded so amazing, and it turned out to be an incredible collaboration. The first collection was inspired by, like, a haunted house in films like Daisies and Black Moon. So, we got together and I gave her my inspiration board which had some of the films on it, and pictures of like a happily haunted vacation idea. We created a landscape that looked like it was purple mist, with castles and boats, and it sort of entered you into this world. Then we did one where it was like, the head of the girl from Daisies and it had a sword and all these magical symbolic imagery that was painted. That was the first collaboration we did - and she’s done like three collaborations with me. I love her paintings. She has this very surrealist quality to her work - like Magritte. Q: On Instagram, your beautiful baby girl can be seen wearing an outfit and matching hat in one of your unique prints. Do you see yourself sewing for her a lot in your future? A: I have! Definitely - when I made her that outfit I was doing the Capsule show of my new collection, and the day before the show I was like, ‘You know, I really should make her something. She’s gonna be there,’ so I spent the day sewing. I love making her things, and she was with me the whole time and watching, and then I was fitting her, she like, knew that it was going to be an outfit for her. Whenever she puts it on she feels so special. I’m excited to have a new muse! I don’t know if she’ll take an interest in fashion, we’ll see, but whatever she wants to do I’m going to be supportive. If she wants to join the team, she’s totally welcome to. It’ll be exciting to see what she wants to do with her life. Q: Has this sparked a general interest in creating apparel for children and babies? A: Children’s line is coming! It’s gonna come out for fall! It will be available on my website, with matching prints for mother and baby - it’s going to be unisex baby clothes, too. I have so many friends with babies now, and I want to dress all of their babies. They’re so cute, I just can’t get over it! There’s a certain little egg-like silhouette that I love babies to have. Q: Your work is photographed by many, although your online journal features much of your own photography! How long have you been photographing? A: I do photo stories all the time - I love them so much. I have so many photographer friends and I’m inspired by so many of them, and I love reaching out and collaborating. I also love to take pictures. I probably started in high school, when I went out I would take a disposable camera. I have all these photographs from my raver days back in the nineties - and I never really stopped. A have probably a million photos in hard-drives from whole life, like from when I would take vacations, I would love to take pictures and do interesting, awkward poses. I love the idea of performance in general, and posing in front of a photo - Cindy Sherman was an early influence when I was in high school. It’s always been a part of my life, and I’m just so glad that there’s mediums now where I can share that with the world, through Instagram. It’s amazing not to have to rely only on publications to publish your work and really put it out there. It’s so inspiring. I feel like half of my friends are photographers who share this idea of capturing the magic you see in your life. It’s also amazing how using real film captures what you see more than digital. That’s something I’ve always loved to use. photography ANDREW DE FRANCESCO stylist KAT CLEMENTS hair RUBI JONES makeup katie MELINGER model KIMIA ZAKERIN

Amidst a field of flowers, she’s the one that catches your eye. She appears fragile with her rosy cheeks and graceful frame, but she is anything but timid in her Opening Ceremony ruffle top and patch pocket tie skirt by HORSES Atelier. She caught your eye because although she makes no effort to draw attention to herself, somehow she commands it. Photographer Daria Perev captures her tousled hair and mesmerizing gaze, proving that this isn’t the first summer she is in full bloom…and it won’t be the last.

an interview with

MOISES RAMIREZ by DAYNA MARIE, makeup artist + journalist @themakeupartivist www.themakeupartivist.com

About a year before I became a New Yorker, I would always take weekend trips to New York once a month to teach myself about the city. On one of those trips, I ventured to the Flatiron District with the sole purpose of visiting the MAC Pro store. This was the very first time I met Visual Artist, Moises Ramirez. I remember him walking me through every brush, pigment, and cream on my wish list, and offering suggestions to products I didn’t even know existed. When he stepped away to assist other artists, I stopped by the book of Face Charts, and couldn’t believe how intricate they were. I flipped through each one, and another artist came up and said, “Moises did all of those! Isn’t he amazing?” At that exact moment, the artist looked down at my iPhone and noticed the wallpaper on my lock screen. He grabbed my phone and told Moises, “Look! She’s got your work as her phone’s background!” Moises smiled, thanked me, grabbed the three products he used to create the look I’d been obsessing over for months, and showed me how he created it. I’ll never forget that day, or the humble and charming energy that radiated from him that day. Moises uses an array of mediums and canvases when he’s creating his art. From ink to eyeliner, and paper to a woman’s lips, there’s no limit to what he can do. He always supports and encourages budding artists as they navigate their own makeup journeys, offering product recommendations and advice. One look at Moises’s work, and you too, will be a fan for life. Q. Your work is like no other, and has a very distinct style that speaks for itself. Where do you seek inspiration for your paintings?

A. Thank you! Unique faces inspire me. Usually people I see on the street, the trains, models on shoots. Their features, skin tones, hair textures and personal style. Colors and textures.

Q. What is your favorite facial feature on a model’s face? Why?

A. If you’ve seen my art, you know lips are my favorite feature. I also think teeth and ears say a lot about a person.

Q. What are some of your favorite musical artists to listen to while on set? A. What are some of your favorite musical artists to listen to while painting?

On set I don’t really get to play exactly what I want to listen to. In my studio while i paint I listen to a mix of artists. A lot of Spanish artists like Chavela Vargas and Rocio Dúrcal. I love 90s R&B and Hiphop. I like Etta James and James Brown...I guess it all depends on my mood that day.

Q. Name some makeup/mixed media artists that have inspired you.

A. In makeup Peter Philips, Pat Mcgrath, Kabuki are some of my favorite. Now in art, artists like Frida Kahlo, Kees Van Dongen, Caravaggio, Lucian Freud, Jenny Saville, too many to name. When I started to painting, I would pull inspiration from the Renaissance period. Then I learned about different art movements and artists. I think MANY artists have inspired my art as well as my makeup work. Q. What is your favorite medium to work in? What is your favorite tool to use?

A. I really don’t have just one. I can’t limit myself to just one. I’ve been loving ink lately. It feels like I have no control over this medium, so its very satisfying. My favorite tool these days is a metal spatula.

Q. Please share one of your proudest moments as an artist.

I am proud to be living in NYC and selling art work while working as a make-up artist. I’m doing what I love! Q.

What was your absolute favorite look from fashion week? It can be any season, any year!

A. It would have to be the looks Pat McGrath created for Dior when John Galliano was there. It was pure magic. I also love the looks from McQueen that Peter Philips created, specially the look from the AW 09 show, “Horn of Plenty.” Q.

If you could take your 18 year old self out for lunch, what advice would you give him?

A. Paint, draw, sculpt, create daily. Every single day do art. Create like no one is watching and make mistakes, they are the best part of the creative process.
