an interview with
ILSE VALFRÉ by SUMMER LEE @summerannelee Ilse Valfré is a Mexican-American fashion designer and illustrator, raised in Tijuana, Mexico, and currently residing in Los Angeles. Ilse founded her namesake brand, Valfré, in 2013, after her artwork became extremely popular on Tumblr. Her illustrations and designs perfectly encapsulate the young woman’s complex relationship with confidence and vulnerability. Her retro style and feminist message has grabbed a great amount of press attention: she has been featured by Vogue, Teen Vogue, The New York Times, Forbes, and Cosmopolitan (just to name a few), and is a reoccurring mention by Nylon. Ilse took the time to answer my questions for her about her personal style, inspirations, and a smidgen of politics.
Q: From the perspective of being from Mexico, but currently living in Los Angeles, in what ways would you say Mexican style and LA style are similar? In what ways are they different? A: There’s a large Mexican community here in a L.A., and I feel that because of that, the styles are very similar. However, people in L.A. are a bit more carefree. Here, you can wear a trash bag as a dress and nobody will even notice. I love it! Q: In what ways does your Mexican heritage come through in your artwork and fashion designs? A: Mexicans are good at not taking themselves too seriously, and our culture is fed by vibrant colors and humor. The influence of these characteristics shines through in my work, especially with some of the products that we make, such as our cheeky phone cases. Q: You once told Urban Outfitters that your father is one of your style icons. In what ways was his fashion sense unique? A: He would always pick the most eccentric outfits! Plus, he would design his own suits! He was never shy about being himself or looking different, and in my opinion that’s what makes someone stylish.
Q: Many of your pieces feature details such as fringe and bell sleeves, which were iconic trends from the 1970’s. Is your favorite era for fashion? A: Yes, I love the color schemes, the kitschy details, and fits. Plus, the icons of the era were total babes! Q: Are there any colors you tend to stay away from? A: I like all colors, but I haven’t worn brown in a long time. Q: Your brand seems to perfectly summarize the attitude of the millennial woman - stocking tee shirts with aggressive phrases such as “beat it, creep”, and “in your dreams”, and even an enamel pin of dry shampoo. Is it fair to say that you are heavily inspired by feminism and womanhood? A: Absolutely. I do things from my own perspective, and for women like me. Valfré is a creative brand with a message. Through humor and satire, I try to lend a voice to express and empower the girls who wear our pieces. Q: This past March you launched “The Activist Tees collection,” which features tee shirts with the phrases “Made in ‘Gina”, “Resting Bitch Face”, and “We gave you guacamole, have some respect”. Were these designs inspired by the American political climate? A: Yes, I think it’s important to raise awareness and take action by supporting organizations that we believe in. Twenty percent of the proceeds from these shirts went to support the ACLU and Planned Parenthood. Q: Do you draw every day? How often do you find yourself drawing people that you know? A: I try to draw every day. I don’t necessarily draw people I know, but I do get inspired by them and the situations that happen around me. Q: During the hot summer months, what can you typically be seen wearing? A: Dresses! I am a dress kinda gal! They’re just so easy to style, and are very comfortable. Q: What do we have to look forward to from Valfré for Fall 2017? A: Exciting collaborations, awesome apparel, and of course more art!

As the day goes on, Laszlo changes into an outfit that seems a tribute to nature. Decked out in florals, she wears ZARA culottes, a black lace top, and floral swimsuit, both from H&M. On her neck she wears a chain of cool-toned stones from ZARA. TIERA SKOVBYE by JESSICA KEY @jesslkey When I walked onto set to do my interview with Tiera Skovbye, the first thing I noticed was how great her hair is. The second thing was how natural she was in front of the camera. I sat down with her during her lunch break to eat vegan pizza and chat about Riverdale, girl power, and filming in her hometown.
JK: So, one of the first things I noticed look at your IMDB page is that you’re a local Vancouver girl. How is it filming here and introducing the cast to Vancouver?
TS: It’s great! I get to stay home with my family and my dog and still work on a US show, which is awesome. The cast had already been here for awhile before I met them, but I got to show them some things that they wouldn’t have normally gone and done, so that was fun. JK: It’s totally different when you’ve lived somewhere versus just visiting for awhile, since some of the best spots aren’t the things you see on Yelp right away.
TS: Yeah, exactly! Or the places that you’re like “does that look sketchy?” but then you go and it’s actually really good and it’s just a little hole in the wall. JK: It seems like the cast is quite close, do you spend a lot of time together when you’re not filming?
TS: We try to, especially on weekends. The main cast especially, they work such insane, long days. Lili and Madelaine actually lived together last season. We would carpool to and from set, because our studio is out in Langely and everyone was living downtown so it was about an hour drive. So, any chance we would get we would be like “it’s your turn to drive!” JK: I know your sister is also an actress, is she also living here in Vancouver as well?
TS: Me and my family live just a 10 minute walk from each other, we are so close it’s awesome JK: It seems like you and your sister are very close.
TS: Yeah, we are. We’re really close. We’re seven years apart, so we have enough of an age gap where we’re not close enough that we argue all the time, since I’m still a little bit older and can say like “oh I see what’s happening right now.” But we’re super close and it’s awesome. JK: That’s great. And you started acting and modelling quite young, like your sister.
TS: Yeah, I started doing commercials when I was seven or eight, and then I started modelling. I was scouted by Next when I was 13. JK: Was the acting thing something that you planned or did you get scouted for that as well?
TS: I got scouted, and it was just kind of one of those things where my parents were like “what is this weird film world?” We knew nothing about it and we didn’t know if it was going to be something I was going to continue on, or if it was just a hobby while I was young. JK: Since this is for a fashion magazine, one of the things that I noticed while watching

an interview with
LUCY’S 34
Riverdale is that a lot of the costumes have a retro vibe that kind of calls back to the comics in a neat way. TS: Yeah!
JK: And since you have a 70s inspired shoot going on today, I wanted to ask is there a particular era style-wise that you gravitate towards in your personal style or is it a bit more eclectic?
TS: I feel like my style is… I don’t want to say all over the place, but…. I love the seventies. The dress I’m wearing right now, I would wear this 100%. I don’t know, I’ll wear anything. [Laughs] JK: With Riverdale, as with any interpretation of source material, there is some obviously going to be some changes. The most obvious change is that it is a murder mystery, but there have been some other smaller things that have diverged from the comics even though they have references to it. One of my favourite aspects is the Betty and Veronica relationship. I was wondering if you had any personal opinions on those changes as someone who grew up reading the comics, or if any of them surprised you?
TS: As far as the Betty and Veronica friendship goes, I think it’s really great that they support each other and that they’re friends, because I really feel like women need that and we need to be there for each other. I feel like especially with the demographic of the show being younger, more geared towards my sisters age even though everyone watches it, it is really important for girls to see that––girls supporting each other and building each other up, and I don’t really feel like there is enough of that on TV right now. I’m really glad that they made that a solid thing on the show. I also love the Archie and Veronica relationship. I think we all kind of knew it was going to happen, but when it happened, it just makes me happy. Because in the comics it’s very “oh, who’s it gonna be,” but I’m glad they did it this way. JK: The show has really made Cheryl much more of a dimensional dress SOYA CONCEPTS necklace LEAH ALEXANDRA
character on it, and even though at multiple points in the show she doesn’t get along with Betty and Veronica, they have both have moments of support and caring for her.
TS: Yeah, because I think they kind of see through her kind of tough, not mean girl but queen bee façade, and know that deep down she is struggling and they support each other, and I think that’s great. JK: There are a lot of relationship that are slightly different on the show compared to the comics, like Jughead and Archie having a rift at the beginning.
TS: Yeah, and they were able to overcome that. JK: How do you think the fan reactions have been to those kind of changes? Is that something the cast has paid a lot of attention to?
TS: We get bombarded with tweets and opinions, I mean more so the main
four than me, but I feel like most fans have been on board with pretty much everything we have been throwing at them. I think at first it was like “you’re trying to remake something from my childhood, you’re going to ruin it!” But they got past the fact that we’re not remaking the Archie Comics, we’re just taking what was there and putting our own spin on it while also staying true to some of the main points. And I think most of the fans are pretty on board because they’re like “Alright! You’re doing it, let’s just see what happens!” JK: I remember seeing the episode that marked the first time that Jughead and Betty kissed, and everyone was like “oh my god, this is not true to the comics” and now…. TS: Oh yeah, they’re obsessed! Bughead!
JK: To the point where people were trying to find out if the actors were together in real life. It seemed like everything they did was getting dissected, since Cole Sprouse had taken some really beautiful photos of Lili Reinhart.
TS: Oh yeah, or if they’ll be standing too close to each other. JK: So, preparing for this interview, I went down the rabbit hole of Reddit, and there is a whole Riverdale subreddit, and there are some amazing fan theories on there. Have you ever read any of those? TS: I haven’t!
JK: Some people have put a lot of effort into it, and paid close attention to the kind of Easter eggs peppered throughout. For example, with the incest storyline, there had been references to incest before, but it had been towards Cheryl and Jason, so when it came out that…
TS: That it was me and Jason. [laughs] JK: Nobody had picked up on that obviously, but there is this level of examination of any popular media that can get so in-depth. So I had just wondered if you had seen any theories that were totally off the wall.
TS: Oh, there was one, before my character came in, where people had thought Polly was just a figment of Betty’s imagination, or like, “Dark Betty” is actually Polly. I just thought that was interesting, it was definitely a funny one. JK: With the references to Twin Peaks in Riverdale, I have to ask, what was it like working with Mädchen Amick?
TS: Mädchen is awesome. She is so sweet, and so funny, and so down to earth, and LOVES Twin Peaks so much. They did the revival of the show, and she’s doing a bunch of press for it right now, and I remember that she had to pick between doing press for that and press for Riverdale two weeks ago, and she was like “well I’m gonna go with Twin Peaks because they started my career.” JK: She plays a character on Riverdale that has been very polarizing, Alice Cooper. She’s had some very poignant scenes on the show, but also maybe had some scenes that fans of Bughead have really disliked her character for. Polly seems like a much less polarizing character, do you find her to be someone pretty easy to play?
TS: I feel like we definitely have some similarities, and I feel like the sister relationship is really easy because I have a little sister, so I kind of know what that’s like. But losing the love of your life and being pregnant with his twins at such a young age is such a roller coaster. Also,

having a treacherous relationship with my parents. All that kind of stuff was very far from my own personal life. Other than that, deep down Polly is very similar to me. She wants to be liked, and to be in school, and be normal. Honestly, at the root of it, I feel like her and Betty just want to be happy and normal. JK: Growing up acting and modelling, did you have kind of a non-traditional school life, or did you stay enrolled in public school the whole time?
TS: I took a GED when I was 16 in California, so I got a high school diploma then. I finished school in Canada up until grade 11, but I just kind of got too busy to do both, so I finished it online. But I was in school most of the time. It was pretty normal. I always went away in the summertime. I went to Japan twice to model, and went to New York and Toronto. So it was a little bit different, but overall my parents tried to keep me growing up pretty normal. When I was older I could do whatever I wanted, but they wanted me to not be totally immersed in the film and modelling world so I could develop myself in a more safe and comfortable environment. JK: With your busy schedule, I know it has probably been hard to find time for TV, but are there any TV shows you’re obsessed with lately?
TS: Season two of Master of None! I also really love Brooklyn Nine-Nine. And everybody has been telling me that if I don’t watch Big Little Lies that there’s something wrong with me, so I guess I have to start watching that. I was watching Parenthood, because I was in the states for a couple months, and then I came home and it’s not on Canadian Netflix, and now I’m like “what am I supposed to do?” It was a good show, it made me cry every other episode, but it was good. [Laughs] And then I would go and watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine and be like “okay, let it go!”

JK: Aside from your castmates, are there any other young actors or models whose careers you are following right now?
TS: I really love Emma Watson, and Jennifer Lawrence is great too. I really, really love Emma Stone, I think she’s super cool and amazing, and Brie Larson as well. There is a photo of Emma Stone and Brie Larson hugging after the Oscars, after Emma just won, and I actually posted it on my Instagram, because I just love that girl power. Just supporting each other, and being happy for each other, and there’s just not enough of that. So, when I see other actors and celebrities being so supportive of one another, I’m just like “this is the best ever!” JK: All those four young women you just mentioned are very frank, and forthright, and refreshing.
TS: Yeah, and they are very themselves. They’re not over-glamorized, they seem like real people that I feel like I could have an amazing conversation with, and they’d just be themselves and not pretentious at all. JK: I know a lot of what you’ve done before has been feature length films, have you noticed a significant difference between filming something like that versus being a recurring character on a TV series?
TS: It’s interesting, because on a film, before you start, you get a script start to finish. You get to discover your character’s entire arc, and everything that happens from the very first time they say a word to the very end, so you get to make all those decisions right away. It’s final––unless you do a sequel to the movie, but most of the time that’s just your character. But with a TV show, you don’t know what’s going to happen with your character next, and the writers are still making things up. It’s just constantly building instead of having it all in one thing. JK: Riverdale has had a fair amount of twists; do you ever speculate amongst the cast mates about where you think the story is going?
TS: Yeah, and I feel like some of the other cast might have a little more insight, but there’s definitely moments of “I hope my character does this” or “I wonder if this will happen.” JK: I was reading some interviews with the showrunner, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, and he described next season as a “civil war” and said that nothing would happen off screen, which means that your character won’t pop up in the new season having had their babies. How is it acting out being pregnant?
TS: I wear a bodysuit with basically a big pillow attached to it. Sometimes I’m seeing all the other girls in their super cute outfits and I’m like “here I am.” But at the same time, I’m like “I’ll have your dessert!” JK: Are you looking forward to the point when Polly has the babies?
TS: I don’t know what the plans are with the babies! So, we’ll see. I’m very interested to see what’s going to happen. JK: The cast has been interesting, because everyone is really spectacular, but there is a mix of early in their career actors and veteran actors like Luke Perry, Mädchen Amick, and even Cole Sprouse.
TS: Yeah! For Camila, this has been her first real thing. She just graduated from school. But she can just walk on a set, and be so on it all the time, and so professional and so prepared and really, really good. You would literally never know that she’s a newer actor. JK: She’s very captivating, and a very good singer as well.
TS: They all are! They are all amazing. KJ can play the guitar like no one else. So much talent.

JOANNE TAN Article by HANNAH LITTLEFIELD The simple phrase, “In jewelry I ensue dialogue” is actually laden with heavy gravitas for Joanne Tan, the designer and creator behind the young, eponymous jewelry line. Just as that phrase carries more weight than it seems at first, Tan’s jewelry does the same. More than just earrings and necklaces, the collection doesn’t currently carry any of the typical jewelry tropes. Instead, you’ll find nose bars, septum rings, facial frames, face chains, and other original pieces in the first collection, Not Your Average Beauty.
“I am hoping to create dialogue through jewelry or with jewelry,” says Tan, referring back to the simple phrase that brings it all together for her. “The collection Not Your Average Beauty is looking at beauty perception and idealised beauty.” And not just looking at it; her goal is to flip it on it’s head. The ethereal 18ct gold pieces are highlighted with diamonds and pearls to draw attention to the imperfect attributes that make each wearer unique, instead of trying to hide them. On top of being extremely driven by this cause, Tan’s desire to start her own line is deeply rooted, as well. “I have always dreamt of owning my own brand since I entered the designing field. The decision to start one was made early this year,” she reveals. Looking at the pieces, it’s hard to believe that she’s been at it for such a short amount of time.
The Central Saint Martins, London graduate is using Instagram to promote her facial ornaments, and she’s currently flying under the radar with barely more than 5,000 followers. That’s bound to change quickly. Since the brand is so young, it’s not to scale yet. Tan told explains that they’re currently focusing on building out the development of the brand. Part of that includes finding manufacturers and stockists, so the incredible pieces are not yet for sale. When asked what she is hoping to do with the brand in the next five years, Tan replied that she is hoping to establish the brand’s international client base and start collaborating with other brands and designers.
Jewelry like this is what the world needs right now; individualistic pieces that are made unique by the person who wears them. Pieces of jewelry, just like clothes or shoes, are hosts for self expression. Tan’s jewelry is so versatile, hundreds of people could buy the same nose ring and, because of the way the jewelry is made and paired with its powerful message, it would be unique and empowering to every individual. model ANDREA B photographer ZHONG LIN stylist YII OOI make up artist NU TAN

an interview with
HANNAH KRISTINA METZ by SUMMER LEE @summerannelee Hannah Kristina Metz is a lifelong fashion lover, first from Ottawa, Ontario, then California, and now Brooklyn, New York. A previous vintage buyer for American Apparel and Urban Outfitters and vintage shop owner in Pasadena, Hannah’s love for vintage fashion is detectable in her namesake clothing line. Hannah’s brand, H.K.M., features clothing collections in tribute to her favorite stories, such as Tristan and Iseult, Wuthering Heights, Anne Of Green Gables, and A Room With A View. Her garments send playful messages through embroidery on vintage-inspired silhouettes. I had the great pleasure of interviewing Hannah in person, during a visit to her studio in Greenpoint. photo by SUMMER LEE @summerannelee
Q: You are a photographer, a model, and a fashion designer. Which title came first, and did that then lead into the other two? A: Growing up I had always envisioned working in the fashion industry. First, career-wise, I started as a makeup artist. I really enjoyed doing special effects makeup, and I thought I’d just go and paint monster faces in Hollywood, but life took a series of different turns and I ended up in LA working in the vintage department at American Apparel. That’s where I learned about working with apparel, and found that was where my passions lay. The photography and modeling was sort of - well, I don’t think I’m professional in either of those positions - but they were little odd jobs along the way, and something I enjoy doing. I really enjoy photography, but I would never really consider myself a “photographer,” but rather somebody who is capable of taking photos! I have too many friends who are professional photographers and I would never presume to put myself on their level. I think that photography has definitely influenced my designs, because when I’m designing I think of the editorial possibilities of each garment. So, they compliment each other for sure. Q: Can you remember the first piece you designed? A: Going all the way back, one of the first things I remember making and being like “That was cool,” was a pair of bell-bottoms for my Barbie! They were made out of tube socks. Then, moving forward, I started making my own clothes when I was in high school. I “deconstructed” a lot
of my little brother’s tee shirts into mini skirts, I took my curtains and made them into my prom dress, I turned skirts into dresses, pillowcases into blouses - whatever I could find and chop up! I didn’t know what I was doing but it was kind of wonderful. I remember all those pieces very, very well. One of them included an orange peel as an embellishment. It was during the time of the big flower embellishments - I think Sarah Jessica Parker wore one on Sex And The City and then everyone had a blazer with a big flower, and I had an orange peel on a black velvet Laura Ashley skirt that I had turned into a dress. Q: Your Fall/Winter 2017 collection was named for the 1908 novel, Anne Of Green Gables. Was that story influential to you as a child? A: Oh my goodness, enormously so. As a ginger-haired Canadian, she was my patron saint. When I was in kindergarten I changed my name to Anne. My report cards came back as Anne. I don’t know how I did that or why my teacher let that happen. I remember reciting a bastardized version of the Tennyson poem The Lady of Shalott (the one Anne recites in the boat), and I’d have my fellow classmates push me away on those rolling milk carts. So yeah, she has been a favorite for a very long time. Q: In what ways did you make references to the novel with your designs from that collection? A: Some of it is a contemporary interpretation of their historical costumes - so a lot of puffed sleeves, because that’s an important part of her sartorial adventure. There are also styles like the Shalott Blouse, which are little more romantic and whimsical. I also reference the Prince Edward Island flag in the embroidery a lot, which includes a comical-looking lion with a blue tongue. Q: Several pieces of your Spring/Summer 2017 line featured an embroidered photos NOELLE DUQUETTE @noelleduquette model MICHAELA BLACKWELL @michaelablackwell makeup CY DAIGLE @cylersays
flower with a smiley face, and you refer to it as “Florence Flower”. Where did that come from? A: This collection is inspired by A Room With A View which came hot on the heels of my lugubrious Tristan and Iseult and my Wuthering Heights collections. I was feeling very frustrated with production woes and things moving slowly and I was like, “I need to make something happier,” - and so these little flowers came to be! When I think of A Room With A View I think of that scene in the flowers where they kiss for the first time. It’s so romantic and humorous. That scene makes me laugh, and the flowers make me happy! So that’s how they came to be. Q: While designing the “Reckless Rose Blouse”, you drew directly from a centaur in the Disney film, Fantasia. Had you been drawn to that rose design since childhood? A: Oh my gosh, yes. Fantasia was one of my favorite movies growing up. I used to watch it all the time because it was full of - as Anne would say - scope for the imagination.
Because there was little spoken word, you could just put on the music and you were in the movie. Every time the centaur scene would come on, my friends and I would all be “You’re this one, and you’re this one!” I was always the ginger one with the doves on her head. There’s a lot from that movie that will probably peek in as my career progresses. Q: What would you say is the most fun part of being a fashion designer? A: I think it’s the freedom! Because I work for myself I have a lot of freedom in what I design. The best part, though, is when the first round of samples come back. It’s all the things you’ve been dreaming about for months, and then they’re finally real and in your hands. Then, of course, when production finally comes back and you start seeing the designs on your friends. I feel very fortunate.

Q: What are you working on right now that you’re most excited about? A: I finished my Spring/Summer 2018 collection, which is inspired by Lady Chatterley’s Lover. It’s very, very romantic. I have an embroidery based on the scene where Lady Chatterley’s naked body is decorated with flowers that I’m very excited about. I also want to start dipping my toe back into the lingerie pool. Not to the extent that I was doing before, but just having a few more lingerie-inspired pieces. That, I’m really excited about. Q: As a connoisseur of vintage fashion, and previous owner of your own vintage shop in California, The Loved One, what types of things do you look for when you go vintage shopping? A: My relationship with vintage has changed a lot since I closed the store. I love it - I’ve been collecting vintage since I was twelve years old but after closing the store, it became like visiting an ex. The whole experience really changed for me, to the point where if I go in a store I have a very specific expectation of how things should be presented and priced. Lately when I go vintage shopping, it’s at places that bear no resemblance to what we had in our shop - a more contemporary vintage shop, like Horizons in Williamsburg. They do a very nineties fancy lady edit, which is so different than what we were collecting, but also something I really enjoy wearing and drawing inspiration from. I’m such a big baby about it, but I really, really loved that store! It was my heart. Q: In what ways does your love of vintage come out when you’re designing? A: I find it impossible to escape my love of vintage when I’m designing. I’ve had garments in my wardrobe for over 15
LUCY’S 81 years that have influenced specific pieces in my collection. The Haunt Me dress for example has a pleat style that is inspired by a dress I wore so much the arms shredded off! I design very selfishly and ultimately am making my own dream wardrobe which means fitted waists and exaggerated sleeves!
Q: Are there any colors in particular that you love to wear? A: I love wearing pink and rosy colors. I’d like to think I’m beyond the millennial pink trend but no, when it comes down to it, it’s always been pink since I was a little girl.
Q: What draws you to fashion photography? When is the last time you photographed? A: My relationship with fashion photography evolved naturally. I had for so long been photographing my own life and projects that it eventually flowed into photographing other people’s lives and projects. Photography is something I really enjoy. It’s instant compared to managing my own line where I rely so much on other people, which can be incredibly frustrating. Photography is just me! I take the pictures, edit them that night, and then it’s done. It’s so immediately satisfying and there’s an exciting energy that happens when you have someone who’s comfortable in front of the camera. I enjoy it, but the reason I’m able to enjoy it so much is that it’s not my passion. I find that you can be so critical of your work when you’re passionate about it. My last shoot was on Sunday! I shot a performance piece by a friend of mine. She’s a wonderful subject and it was a lot of fun. I shoot all my own lookbooks and I’m very lucky to have a group of attractive friends to shoot marching around town dressed up in my clothes.
