an interview with

KILLSTAR by SUMMER LEE @summerannelee / @killstarco KILLSTAR is a U.K.-based fashion and lifestyle brand, which caters exclusively to lovers of darkness and the occult. When it was established in 2010, the brand sold only t-shirts and hoodies. Now, KILLSTAR is a one-stop-shop for all gothic goods, from studded leather jackets to coffin-shaped journals. Every piece is unmistakably goth, with many featuring mystical symbols such as the pentagram and the ankh. Other pieces evoke the paranormal, printed with ouija boards and chilling graveyards. With autumn upon us and Halloween just around the corner, it’s time to get witchy - and KILLSTAR can more than accommodate your need for something spooky. Creative Art Director Tequila Star gave us the inside scoop on KILLSTAR’s mission, current projects, and her opinion on the color pink!

Q: An outsider might imagine gothic swimwear to involve pantaloons and parasols. However, your uniquely KILLSTAR swimwear line destroys those notions with its sexiness and edginess. What are some must-haves for a gothic swimsuit? A: Nowadays swim can be almost anything - we try to incorporate our love for flattering silhouettes, dark occult vibez, and

badass prints into everything we do, including swimwear. For me, a gothic swimsuit should boost one’s confidence - as swim can be somewhat of a self-conscious affair for most, especially me! But with a hot af bikini - you feel better about showing some skin. With SPF 100 of course. And by all means - if I find an all-black parasol; it’ll be sure to come too! Q: After browsing through your online merchandise, I’ve gathered that the KILLSTAR color palate is majorly black with white accents. There is, however, a significant collection of pieces all in pastel pink! Why is pink the exception to KILLSTAR’s all-black rule?

A: In a way it’s actually a mystery - I am an all-black-everything kinda girl - but I do have a spell here and there with odd color

an interview with

all photos © KILLSTAR

splashes (mixed with a ton of black tho!). Pink just always had a space of my heart - and I think that comes through in the lines we create. But we always try to take the pink to the ‘dark side’ even when it’s pastel - it has to have the right detailing for it to work. Q: Being founded in Glasgow, is there something about KILLSTAR that you believe is unique to the United Kingdom?

A: I moved to Glasgow from Sweden as a teenager - it was meant to be a temporary thing, and I just loved it so much I stayed for years. But the brand always embodied a rootless character for me - neither here or there. A bit like me. Q: There is a ton of cat imagery and mention of cats on KILLSTAR merchandise. Would you say that the black cat is the spirit animal of KILLSTAR?

A: If I had to pick it would be a cat for sure - but really, we love all animals. I always felt more connected to animals than humans - as an outsider and loner it’s my idea of a bff. Q: Is it safe to assume that Halloween is your favorite holiday? How do you typically spend Halloween?

A: I love Halloween and all that comes with it, however, for me it’s an all-year thing - not just the one night a year. So on the thirty-first I prefer to spend it away from the busy crowds and clubs. I can be as happy with Netflix and snacks - doing a marathon of my fav movies. Q: Are you currently working on something exciting?

A: Yes, we have been working really hard to expand footwear. It’s actually one of my lifelong dreams to do shoes - and now when it’s finally a reality, I am literally exploding with ideas. I hope to show some pretty rad stuff real soon! Also some pretty fun projects coming up too - still cannot disclose much but watch this space! Q: What message does KILLSTAR send to mainstream fashion industry?

A: Only dead fish go with the flow. For me, fashion should be about celebrating individuality - not the sameness and what is seen as ‘normal’. Let your freak flag fly! Q: How often do you personally wear KILLSTAR pieces?

A: Every day, it’s all I wear now. And if we don’t have what I desperately want - I make it.

LUCY’S 38

MESTIZA NEW YORK by SUMMER LEE @summerannelee / @mestiza_ny Louisa Rechter and Alessandra Perez-Rubio are the co-founders of MESTIZA NEW YORK, a formalwear brand inspired by photographs of the Philippines in the nineteen-sixties. Through their designs, they recall the tropical glamour of those vintage scenes. Both women are Filipino-American and identify with the word “mestiza”, meaning a woman of mixed ancestry. In honor of their heritage, the brand has partnered with the Habi Philippine Textile Council, which supports female textile weavers in the Philippines. Their collaboration, Mestiza x Habi, features beautiful and traditionally handwoven fabrics. Alessandra’s creative direction and Louisa’s business acumen make them the perfect duo. MESTIZA NEW YORK has been spotted on celebrities such as Chrissy Teigen, Ashley Graham, and recently on Iskra at NYFW.

Q: Your designs are heavily influenced by nineteen-sixties photos of the Philippines, especially those of Alessandra’s mother who you refer as “the original Mestiza girl” - is there a specific photograph that directly inspired a particular design in your collection?

ALESSANDRA: Yes, absolutely! My mother was a model in the late nineteen-sixties for this iconic Filipino fashion designer named Pitoy Moreno, who I credit to introducing Filipino fashion silhouettes to the world. My mother would always close his shows, wearing a magnificent bridal gown done in appliquéd guipure lace and dramatic scalloped bell sleeves. I remember a framed photograph of my mom in our living room, where she is beaming from ear to ear, intricate flowers woven in her hair, and wearing that very gown by Pitoy Moreno. This quintessential image of my mother must have been living in the back of my mind for years, because as I was designing our Spring/Summer 2017 collection, that photo acted as the center point of my inspiration, which is reflected in our bell sleeve ruffle mod mini dresses. Q: How would you describe the style of the Philippines in the sixties? How did it compare to fashion in America?

ALESSANDRA: The Philippines is a tropical place that has always been heavily influenced by American culture. While Philippine fashion mimicked the mod silhouettes seen on the catwalks of New York, Filipino designers kept heritage styles at the forefront of their mind when designing. The Maria Clara and Terno dresses, which were popular styles worn in the Philippines since early 19th century, would be modernized and worn to black tie events, weddings, and galas. Textures of traditional translucent fabrics took center stage, such as jusi and piña, which were constructed from breathable lightweight material made of pineapple fibers. These fabrics were often combined with tonal ornate embroidery that was understated yet exquisite. Q: Although neither of you are from New York, you both found yourselves here when creating your brand. What brought you to New York? Was it fate?

LOUISA: Alessandra and I met as college freshmen. While rushing the same sorority, we discovered our mutual ties to the Philippines: my mother grew up in Cebu and Alessandra is from Manila. I had never met anyone who shared this unique connection with me – we even shared a roster of family friends! I didn’t know what it would amount to, but I always knew our relationship would be special. In terms of moving to New York, I can’t speak for Alessandra, but I’m a little embarrassed to admit that “Sex and the City” had a huge influence on my move! As a teenager growing up

LUCY’S 40

in the Midwest, the idea of “Carrie Bradshaw” and her sea of shoes, designer clothes, and fast-paced cosmopolitan lifestyle was mind-blowingly cool to me. I finagled my way to New York each summer by interning at a private equity shop on 5th avenue. After college, I landed my dream job with a contemporary New York-based designer. I quickly learned that Carrie’s lifestyle is highly unrealistic, but found a love for the business of fashion and the contagious energy of the city. If you want to make it happen, New York is the place to be! Q: You both attended WashU - where you met - but neither of you studied fashion! Where did the idea to design fashion come from? Were you always passionate about clothing?

ALESSANDRA: When I looked into the Perez-Rubio family photo archives the last time I was visiting my parents, I noticed that I was wearing a pink tutu over everything from ages 2-7: my school uniform, overalls, and even over a fancy party dress. My grandmother called me “Madame Lazonga,” a little pet name that embodied my dramatic flair and my eccentric fashion choices. In a way, I was living and breathing fashion from the moment before I could even make decisions on how to dress myself. There was a minor blip during my college years where I thought I was being sensible by majoring in Communication Design instead of fashion, but luckily I was able to use all of the design principles from my time there and translate them into apparel. When we started Mestiza, I had no idea how to design a dress, let alone sew, so everything was very much self-taught - I was surprised by how naturally it all came to me. Q: You are partnered with the Habi Philippine Textile Council, who has made it their mission

to preserve Philippine textiles. What does this partnership mean to you? LOUISA: Because the Philippines is near and dear to our hearts and inspires

so much of Mestiza’s brand identity, we wanted find a way to give back to the community. Alessandra’s mother is a philanthropist in the Philippines and suggested that we partner with the Habi Philippine Textile Council. The women of Habi come from all different regions to weave in their traditional manner. We give them limited creative direction and a flexible production schedule as we want the textiles to have cultural authenticity. Not only are the fabrications beautiful, but each Mestiza x Habi piece also helps to sustain the Philippine cotton farming industry, provide a steady paycheck for the women, and keep a centuries-old artisanal craft alive for the world to admire. Q: Let’s talk about the Laura Bell Dress with the wraparound rose gold embellishment! What was the inspiration for that eye-catching design?

ALESSANDRA: I’m a bit of a magpie, in that I am attracted to shiny things! I was actually strolling New York’s Garment District one morning after a somewhat unproductive factory meeting, when something sparkly caught my eye. It was the wraparound silver embellishment and I thought it would be perfect on Louisa’s rehearsal dinner dress, which I was designing at that time. When I first started pinning the embellishment on to the dress during her fitting, I knew this would be special - the kind of piece we want to be known for. When I started designing for Fall/Winter 2017, I immediately thought to evolve the dress into a black and gold version, which ended up being one of our most popular styles! Q: What was the first piece that you designed for the brand?

ALESSANDRA: Our timeless Cha Cha Tassel dress was the first dress I designed and the one that launched the brand! I was five months pregnant when Louisa and I quit our jobs to launch Mestiza New York. When I was designing our very first collection, all I wanted was something effortless that I could fit into with my growing baby bump. I had the idea for an easy offthe-shoulder dress for summer, but it looked too simple and basic when we received our first sample - and “basic” is not in our brand DNA. I hit the streets and discovered iridescent tassels at a furniture trim store. I started pinning them to the sample of the off-shoulder dress, along with a gold sequin fringe. I had a funny feeling this style would be a hit, and to this day it remains a best seller, and a Mestiza classic that we offer every season. Q: Do you have any words of advice for new designers aspiring to launch their brand?

LOUISA: The very first step in launching a brand is to identify who your customer is and what problem you’re solving for them. It will help you focus and stay on track. Fashion is a tough business and a lot of people will tell you to not pursue it, but stick to your guns and go for it! It’s an exciting time to be a new brand. photographer THOMAS WOLFE NORTHCUT hair & makeup JANERA ROSE model EMILY HALL
