This editorial was actually inspired by vintage James Bond movies or Red Sparrow. It’s a modern day take on a classic theme: The life of Russian Spies. It follows 3 female leads as they prepare for their treacherous mission ahead. Waiting on the shores of this Malibu summer house is Julia, a bombshell of a spy. Her two partners, Eugenia and Anastassija, have just arrived on shore with highly sensitive information securely stowed in a briefcase.
As they make their way into the house, I really wanted to make sure these spy’s were believable. We acquired guns, binoculars, headsets, and vintage spy gear from a Hollywood movie prop store, which really brought a level of authenticity to these strong and sexy female models. Many of the outfits are from Ivan Bitton Style House and the stylists, Elena Nazaroff & Aaron Gomez, did an amazing job really tying the whole set together into a cohesive narrative. The make up and hair was provided by Reba Vera, who is absolutely amazing and provided these elegant Russian Spies sophistication.
The concept was by Julia Lescova, one of the models and she absolutely delivered. The stylist Elan Nazaroff was also great as a creative director and helped story board this shoot. I could not have wished for a more creative experience. The title of the Editorial is ‘From Russia with Love’ which is inspired by the 1963 British spy film and the second in the James Bond film series. ~Rex Yu

LUCY’S 78 I’ve always wanted to visit Costa Rica, and for the last 6 months it became an incessant thought in my head. I had to go there. I met a friend of a friend, who mentioned they were planning a group travel trip to Costa Rica for 6 days for their new app Take Off. So, being my adventurous self, I booked my ticket with almost strangers and decided to stay for 2.5 weeks (an extra week longer than the group). The second part of my trip would be a solo adventure across Costa Rica. I had no idea where or what I would do after the group left, but I would figure it out once I got there, letting the world guide me and the locals and other travelers send me recommendations on where to visit. Before my trip, I contacted showrooms to pull wardrobe for the trip. I had this concept for a self portrait series I wanted to shoot. I didn’t know what or where in Costa Rica I would do it, but I promised the showroom it would be unique and great and an ongoing project I want to do on my travels. Luckily they were on board and lent me clothing for my exploration. Theres something special, magical, fluid about doing self portraits. I know exactly what my movements will be. I know exactly the moment that I am giving to the camera as the model, and exactly the moment I want to capture as the photographer, and these moments are perfectly in sync. There is no time lapse, no communication or explanation needed, no direction to give, no difference in styles that are open to each persons interpretation (I love seeing others interpretations dont get me wrong, but being perfectly in sync? What an amazing experience!). Theres movements, thoughts, emotions I know I can do as the model and I haven’t felt like it was captured before. Who else knows you better than you do? I was excited to see what would happen. I landed in the capitol of San Jose, Costa Rica, to find out that my connecting flight to Tamboor was cancelled due to a storm. Me and the 6 other strangers on the same cancelled flight started talking and realized our final destinations were near each other, and decided to share a 6 hour taxi van across Costa Rica. Slightly delirious from our different international flights, our road trip began. Luckily I had downloaded Samba and Bossa Nova music on my phone, a great soundtrack for our trip. We stopped to get wine and snacks, and the taxi driver was very comfortable going at top speed through the narrow winding roads while the beautiful Costa Rican jungle wilderness zipped by. We took the car on the ferry, (my first time on a car ferry!) which I found very exciting. By the end of the trip we were like a funny road trip family, and we kept running into each other during the rest of our trip in Costa Rica. Santa Teresa was amazing, one of my favorite places in the world. I booked a job as the model for the hotel we were staying at, and they filmed me over a couple days doing yoga, my first surfing lesson, atv riding, and an hour long interview of me as a traveling nomad. I also went horseback riding twice, REAL horseback riding through the ocean and rivers and up and down mountains and through the jungle. I will definitely go back to Santa Teresa. After my new friends with the travel group left, it was completely up to me how I make the next 1.5 weeks of my trip. I knew I wanted to be in the jungle. I HAD to be in the jungle, it was like a magnet pulling me. I asked around and heard that Monteverde Cloud Forest is one of the best jungles in Costa Rica, so I booked a 4x4 SUV rental car (you have to drive a 4x4 in Costa Rica as the roads are very rough and you often have to cross small rivers), and off I went on my solo road trip. Despacito was my hype song, every time I got in the car I would play it and I was ready for an adventure. I drove by mountains, valleys, rivers, tiny towns, jungles. I saw windmills, monkeys, crossed old wooden bridges tucked into the mountainside with water rushing beneath. I drove through rolling hills and cow pastures. One place in particular I found utterly breathtaking, so I stopped, did some light makeup in the car, and packed a bag of wardrobe, my tripod, my camera and went climbing through a barbed wire fence to the crest of the most beautiful mountain side overlooking a valley. There were two farm workers across the street who I asked in Spanish if it was okay if I took some photos here, which, amused, they said yes. It was very windy, and in the absolute middle of nowhere is a girl from California with wild hair in a 4x4 truck wearing a dress and running shoes asking them if she can do a photoshoot. Im sure I looked like a crazy person, running and jumping and playing in the wind all by myself, swirling a rain poncho I bought in some random store in Santa Teresa, but I knew my vision. I wanted wild, and free, and uninhibited. I wanted to express and explore and I both knew exactly what I was doing and had no idea what I was doing at the same time. PLAYHOUSE CONCEPT starring CARMEN VILLALOBOS by CARLA SAAVEDRA
Known to Latin American audiences for her iconic and charismatic television performances, we decided to cast Carmen Villalobos in our very own, introspective performance; a rare opportunity to peek behind the curtain and observe a different facet of the renowned actress. Our narrative follows Carmen during her "down-time”, inspired by the intimate and invaluable moment where she is sitting at home and first opens a new script to begin the process of building her character from the ground up. Ultimately, this is a deconstruction of a performance, a return to the moment where it all begins, that audiences seldom, if ever, get to see. With a silken and luxurious pajama-inspired wardrobe that rivals any of the great party dresses of our time, we also get to know Carmen the way she feels most glamorous and sexy: when she is comfortable and relaxed. Stripping away all the lights and heavy production elements, her bedroom and living room, created using raw wooden backdrops, studio boxes, and canvas drapes, double as her very own actor’s playhouse, and again allude to a return to the basics. Each image, offers a distinct and inexplicable sensibility to reveal a different piece of the acting puzzle. As she laughs or cries on cue, takes a pause, studies her expressions and movements, sings or plays dress up, we see Carmen’s true passion and not easily matched finesse for her craft. The use of flowers in different shapes, textures and vibrant colors are also a metaphor for acting. Flowers always seem to be telling their own story and have historically been traditional elements of good luck on the stage.

The lush and diverse landscapes of her native country are home to a thriving hummingbird population, with nearly 150 known species.
