Favorite restaurant SZ: L’Auberge du Vieux Puits in Languedoc and Le Meurice in Paris for the tea time. GP: I love the Adler Wirtschaft in Rheingau West of Frankfurt. It offers great local food and superb wines from the area. I’ll never design... SZ: Real fur. That’s why we will introduce a striking red faux fur fabric for the upcoming PLAKINGER AW15/16 collection. GP: Real fur. Beauty tip(s) SZ: I keep my make-up clean and simple, but I love red lipstick. Real beauty comes from inside and thus getting enough sleep, eating healthy with enough exercise is important. GP: Yoga and healthy food have become part of my daily routine.

M

y latest purchase SZ: A vintage Salvatore Ferragamo palladium top handle bag. I was so lucky to find it. GP: All the Christmas presents for my beloved have already been purchased, but I can’t tell you about it yet... Fashion icon SZ: Diane Krüger and Cate Blanchett. I love their contemporary, chic, daring but equally feminine looks. GP: Jerry Hall, my style, my age and she is still looking great. Favorite city SZ: It’s really hard to just pick one city. But I love Paris. GP: Moscow. But I recently visited Dubai and liked it a lot too. My top 3 fashion essentials SZ: Basics like a white t-shirt, a pair of jeans and a PLAKINGER statement piece. GP: I’m not focused that much on specific pieces but rather on lovely textured colourful fabrics. Never- theless, a feminine dress is a must have. I love... SZ: To travel, to discover amazingly good food and search for special vintage pieces. GP: My children and grandchildren, my work, I love being creative and see how PLAKINGER grows internationally. I dislike... SZ: Intolerance and ignorance. There is just too much of that today. GP: I’d rather focus on the positive things in life. Too much time wasted on the negative ones. Next holiday destination SZ: The mountains are calling as the ski season starts soon in Europe. We have a skiing trip with the whole family to the Austrian Alps. GP: Austria for the winter holidays. Signature perfume scent SZ: Olivier Durbano, Pink Quartz. A perfume I found in a small shop in Via Brera in Milan a couple of years ago. A fragrance is very personal to me, thus I prefer something less mainstream. GP: Frederic Malle, Lipstick Rose. It smells like a powdered lipstick and brings back memories of my childhood as it reminds me of my mothers cosmetics. I can’t live without... SZ: My family and work. I got addicted and completely drawn into PLAKINGER at some point. GP: My gardening work to relax from the daily noise and stress. Every morning, I say to myself... SZ: “I am not a morning-person, please give me another two hours!” GP: “How lucky am I to start creating wonderful pieces in my atelier again!”

A woman can never have too many... SZ: Self esteem, confidence, and education. GP: Blazers. Favorite designer SZ: Raf Simons for Dior, Josep Font and Vika Gazinskaya. GP: Josep Font for Delpozo, I love the mix and balance of the cuts, the details and choice of fabrics as well as colours. Clothes you will never see me wearing SZ: Camouflage outfits and separates that are too short. GP: If it’s too tight, too short, too sheer...I’ll pass. Dior or Chanel ? SZ: Dior, especially the first collections by Raf Simons. GP: Chanel.

You set up your own brand at a very young age. Was it a tough decision? I just felt that it was the right time to give it a try. I received good feedback from the press and the fashion industry, so I decided to continue on working on my own collections. That’s basically how I enrolled into having my own brand, I never thought about my age. Being young is something I consider as a good thing actually. What has been the highlight of your career so far? Winning the Chloé prize was definitely one of the highlights, and all the opportunities to present my work I have been given ever since included. According to you, what is the ultimate fashion faux-pas? I do not really believe in fashion faux-pas, if you combine your clothes on a smart and intelligent way, and you dress in a way that makes you feel good, then I believe one can come along with anything. Let’s talk about your Fall-Winter 15/16 collection. What are the fabrics, colors, textures and themes that you explored? For this collection I started working with knitwear for the very first time, with cotton and merino wool yarns, to create a comfortable luxury and to put emphasis on the clash between sports and luxury that I find key-aspects in my work. Next to these knits, I combined the looks with hand-painted silks, embroidered silks and rich jacquard fabrics with lurex. For the bags we worked with several types of leather, in different colors. You have a strong and impressive background in prints and there’s always this interesting mix between luxury and sportswear aesthetics in your collections. How did you come up with this idea? It has been my personal fascination for years, and with my graduating collection I found a way to develop it for the first time in my own collection by finding inspiration from the cut-outs by Matisse. I developed cut-outs suits by cutting and pasting with paper myself, and I carried them out in lycra fabrics. I combined these catsuits with transparent, hand-painted and embroidered designed silk

voluminous coats on top, which created a laminated and eclectic play-a-long between background and foreground: a clash between sports and luxury. You have just showcased your Spring-Summer 16 collection during Paris Fashion Week. What is your favorite piece from the collection?

From an artistic point of view I really like the kaleidoscope screen-printed silk dress with the primary colors, because it represents the concept of the collection very well. For my own wardrobe I would love to wear the cow leather skirt. What is the best part of the job, being a fashion designer?

Everyday is completely different, which keeps my rhythm very energetic and dynamic. Since I work independently and sometimes freelance, I’m free to decide what will be happening during the day. I enjoy this freedom, but it’s tough sometimes since you have to push everything yourself. More and more designers are getting involved in eco-fashion, voicing their ecological beliefs, concerned about the way we consume fashion. Is sustainable fashion something you’d like to explore in the future?

Definitely. I have been thinking lately about what I can add to this industry. Since there are so many different brands already, small ones like mine, I want to add something worth buying. Something that doesn’t harm our environment much more, since I think that we all are responsible for the world we live in. That’s why I believe it would be much better if we all started developing our work more and more locally. My production is already taking place in the Netherlands. Now, I would like to develop even the fabrics closer to home. Actually it’s something I’m exploring right now, so it’s very exciting and the results will be presented in Paris in March with the presentation of the new collection. In your opinion, what is the most iconic fashion piece of all time?

The coat, it makes you feel rich and protected, but on the other hand it can make you feel as elegant as wearing a dress. Fashion aside, tell us a little secret...

Besides fashion, I have a fetish for small living spaces and trailers. As a kid I used to build them myself out of lego, or draw maps of them on paper. It’s a strange fascination my attention has always been drawn to when visiting exhibitions or bookstores. Sometime I dream on designing them myself... maybe one day it will happen! Or, if someone would like to collaborate on this project they can always send me a message ;)

What are the main inspirations behind Victoria Scandale? Generally speaking, it is my own sense of what I think is beautiful, my aesthetic regarding feminine chic, bohemian comfort while experimenting in pleating and cutting. I have many inspirations, the strongest one being music. Did you have a style icon growing up? The very first influence came from my mother. She always had a good taste in fashion and she was a beautiful woman herself. I always looked up to her. What are the features that make your brand unique? Attention to details. I design clothes women can wear in their everyday life, during day time or night time without worrying about being well dressed. From my collections, you are able to pick any skirt or pair of trousers and combine it with a simpler t-shirt and look great. No need to overthink it. These types of outfits can be pretty helpful nowadays. Your brand is NY-based, still your clothes are Made in Italy. Can you explain this choice? New York is where I used to live before. Now I’m spending most of my time in France. So right now, made in Italy is more convenient to me. The quality control is easier, I can supervise the production way better because it’s closer. I might have some of my garments produced in NY also, why not, when I will start spending more time there again. Anyway, regardless of the country where the clothes are made, I put all my efforts into finding the best quality possible. As a young designer, it’s important to know your market and your customers. How do you achieve the balance between your creative process and the practical necessity ?

Photographer ANNY KOZYREVA Model DORA Make-up artist & Hairstylist TARJA D.

Oh, that’s easy. When designing, I think: Who? When? Where? How? What for? I feel like doing whatever I want in terms of creativity but at the end of the day, I have to swear to myself that it can be worn at office, to a fancy brunch or a party. I don’t want women to be overdressed or look funny. I need to see myself wearing it. Actually I wear my own designs on a daily basis.

If given the opportunity, would you go down the mass market route? It could be interesting to make a more mass market oriented sub-line. It would have to be different from what I’m currently doing in terms of materials, details and so on, but keeping a major aesthetic. From a more commercial point of view it would be a great opportunity too ! Who would be your dream designer to work with? Why? Karl Lagerfeld. He is a genius. What are your plans for the future? I’ll stay strong, keep going and go further. I want to build a globally recognized brand, then develop an accessory line. I am a dreamer with a career-oriented future.

LUCY’S 50 A year after the first appearance, Li Jewels presents its new collection, inspired by ethnic and traditional jewelry and reinterpreted in a contemporary key, with simple, geometric lines. New materials have been introduced: pearls, porcelain, stoneware and rope. Brass plated in gold remains dominant, although each piece can be made also in silver, since each one is handmade in Barcelona . After a career of more than 8 years dedicated to environmental consultancy, Lucia left everything to devote herself to crafts, her vocation and with this she tries to give her life a meaning which she wasn’t able to do with her office job. She commits herself to handmade fashion, cared for, pampered and unique, so people don’t merely take an accessory with them, but a part of their way of understanding life. “This has been a intense, unusual year, I’ve been faced with conflicting feelings. The fantastic feeling to do for the first time in my life, something that expresses my personality, that feeling of doing what I want to do; it contrasts with fear before the uncertainty, the fear that sometimes overwhelms you after leaving the security of a salaried job. “For this reason I have called the new Balance collection: balance, life balance.” “The new collection and the brand, Li jewels, reflects my way of looking at fashion, and the way in which I think that fashion can change the world. And this is also a balance between the need to express ourselves through our clothing and accessories and the need to flee from consuming; “fast fashion”, that contributes to inequality and the depletion of the planet. For this reason, I try to create significant, long-lasting pieces and timeless, used to combine different styles and on different occasions.”
