Interview with Michelle Aristocrat Ramona: When did you start taking photos and where do you get your inspiration from? Michelle: My interest in the Art of Photography started when I was living in Richmond Virginia. I was a freelance makeup artist and stylist working on my portfolio and suddenly realized I was very interested in photography. There was something intriguing about putting all that work and imagination into a still photograph. I get my inspiration from many places. More recently I’m inspired by color, the sky and anything “Haute Couture”. Ramona: What is your favorite photo that you’ve taken so far and why? Michelle: That is a tough one. I have a few that are favorites of mine but the one editorial that still inspires me is “In the Wood She Waits”. Firstly, the concept is a remix of the classic Little Red Riding Hood. Secondly, the team was so spontaneous with my ideas and brilliant. Lastly, I can’t get enough red!

Ramona: How did you lean Photography? Michelle: I am a self-taught photographer. There is so much information on the web to learn and study your craft, however I have learned from other great photographers I have had the pleasure to work with.

THE TWO SIDES OF ME Everyone has their own bright and dark sides. And it’s up to each of us to decide which side you will be turning towards the light in the next moment. Which side do you want the others to see right now? There are certain people who can see only good in you, ignoring the existence of your demons at all. Those people tend to love you unconditionally, no matter what you say or do. They believe in you, they trust and support you, but they will never understand who you truly are. Some other people may have seen you in your worst days, when the dark side was dominating. Since then they judge you for the mistakes you had made in the past, not considering the positive part of your personality. You cannot convince them of the opposite, and you will always stay a dark spot in their memories. Only a few close people may be able to see and accept both bright and dark sides of you at the same time. They admit this dualism, this combination of black and white in your personality. They will learn how to deal with it and they will love you exactly for this imperfection. Cherish these rare soulmates, don’t let them go and don’t turn your bright side away from them. Ever. Thinking of that combination of light and darkness in an individual, I came up with an idea to photograph a face separated into Bright and Dark sides. The series is called “The Two Sides Of Me”; it’s about the acceptance of who you are, about courage to show both of the sides of your soul. I wanted to make viewers think about their own angels and demons. It’s not obvious where the thin line separating different shades of our soul is lying. That’s why in the photographs you will not find the solid black and white parts of the face. Instead, the black color partly goes inside of the Bright side, and vice versa. At the same time this gives a viewer a strong graphically balanced image. As you can see, I photographed a pretty young girl. Despite her face is divided into Black and White, it is still the same person, the dark side is no less beautiful than the bright one. Moreover, you wouldn’t be able to see the Bright side at all if there were no dark colors to create the contrast. It is similar to how we can’t visually read a picture or a photograph if there’re only lights without shadows. Shadows create dimension in photographs; so maybe shadows, the darker corners of a soul, create our personality? Ksenia Pro, Portrait Photographer 42 LUCY’S Magazine

Search for your style by Mona Brown

There are so many different styles and trends going on it can be hard to find

what your personal style is or where to even begin if you’re new to this whole ‘being fashionable’ thing. Believe me, when I first started really getting into fashion, I found that it was a little confusing and intimidating, especially being a plus size lady. Whenever I went shopping I’d find myself in the dressing room, in my underwear, crying about how the clothes didn’t look good on me, didn’t fit, or how looked like they belonged to someone who was about 50 years older than I was. It was a crushing and frustrating task. That was about 4 years ago. One defining moment of my life was when one of my dear friends had taken me to a clothing store specifically for plus size girls, it was what started this internal revelation and growth. After seeing such an array of options that I had, I knew I needed to expand my wardrobe. I started doing some research.

First it

was simply where can I find plus size stores? Then I dug a little deeper and started reading blogs, looking at magazines, going downtown and getting involved with social media. The more I immersed myself into this strange and beautiful culture, the more I found my own style and also the more I found something so much more important than what’s on my body. I learned about self love and that everyone has their insecurities. It’s so important that you love yourself and to think that you’re beautiful and different. Everyone has a different body and to me, that’s what makes fashion and clothing so incredible. It changes the world and it connects each one of us. I see it everyday of my life.

Whether it’s a blog post, an outfit I’ve seen or one I’ve worn; fashion is part of

the bones and structure of humanity and of culture.
