LETTER FROM THE EDITOR I would like to thank every one of you for submitting to LUCY’S Magazine and for being amazing! Being in a magazine is a step forward and makes artists feel accepted and approved. I think it is important when artists know what magazines are looking for. Here are a couple of things that are important to me and can give your editorial a higher chance of being accepted: great quality and the ‘wow factor’. Quality overall is important (great makeup, hairstyle, location, clothing and editing). What do I mean when I saw ‘wow’ factor? The element your series brings to the table that makes it unique and special. Wow me! Send us your work at submissions@lucysmagazine.com Interested in advertising? marketing@lucysmagazine.com

RAMONA: Let’s start with you telling us something interesting or funny about yourself. TAK: I was born and raised in Japan, moving to the US when I was very young without knowing a lick of English. Since then, I’ve lived in over 20 different places, moving between cities and states all over the country. The fact that I’ve been to so many places and experience a lot has helped me become pretty open and liberal about everything in life. I feel very comfortable moving anywhere and going outside of the so called “comfort-zone”, and I know I can adapt to the people, culture, environment and even food easily…maybe except the worms and bugs that people eat in China. R: When did you start your photography career and why? T: I started photography four years ago purely based on my inquisitive desire to explore photography and capture something artistic and captivating through a photograph. Until then, I didn’t know much about it to be honest. I was always into art and drawing when I was younger, but never pursued anything seriously mainly due to the influence from my parents to pursue something that is “financially stable”. When I first started photography, I was shooting anything and everything. Then I discovered Flickr and its “Explore” section. There I came across some captivating portraits of people. Since then I never looked back. Some people discover their calling even before they are born while others are still searching for them desperately. For me it took almost 30 years to find it, but I feel blessed now that I have something worth fighting for. As it is for anything, it’s not always an easy path, but the visual high you get when encountering an impeccably intriguing image cannot be articulated in words. R: Who and what inspires you? T: I’m very inspired by the contrasts in life…dark and pure, soft and hard, simple and complex. My mind and vision wander between both spectrums constantly and I leverage this to create something that is different yet cohered together through my style of shooting. As far as photographers, I am fascinated by brilliant powerhouse like Mert and Marcus, but I also love younger
yet established photographers like Billy Kidd, Benjamin Lennox, and Oliver Stalmans. Lastly, I love photographers who can send powerful emotions and stories through simplicity like Tim Barber. R: Do you have a location you want to take pictures at and you never had the chance to do it yet? T: I would love to do an underwater shoot at an exotic location with water pure as diamonds. I’ve seen some amazing underwater shots in the past, and I couldn’t ask for more if I can create a story with water and flawless sunlight infused together in perfection. Also, I would love to shoot a Victorial Secret Fashion Show. I mean, who doesn’t? R: What are the ingredients to a great photo shoot? T: Of course, there are many variables that are critical to having a great photo shoot. If I had to pick the most important ingredients, they would be: superb creativity, amazing model, and great lights. Over the years, I am convinced that those ingredients alone can create intriguing images for anyone’s eyes, even using an iPhone camera. R: What else do you do besides photography? T: My passion to travel grew stronger and synonymously with fashion photography. I make it a point to travel outside of the country at least once a year, and I absorb everything during my trip from culture, food, people, and of course, stimulating sceneries worth capturing. When you see me touting the word “wow” in public, you know that I’m experiencing a visionary high that is comparable to when I see a photograph that is captivating. R: If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be? T: Passionate. When I get into something, I really get involved…and what I get drawn to has very broad spectrum ranging from something athletic like surfing to something more artistic like photography. Consequently, I also get bored of them very quickly too once I go through the motions and the buzz fizzles. This is also the reason why I know photography is my passion with absolution. It’s the one and the only thing that I never got bored of and keep craving for more.

RAMONA: Tell us something interesting or funny about yourself. MARK: I hate sleeping because I feel like there is something I could be doing. I’ll stay up late to avoid it and end up sleeping in as a result. It makes no sense, I know. R: When did you start your photography career and why? M: I started about two and a half years ago as a result of a breakup. I’ve always loved the idea of photography to some capacity throughout my life, though. R: Who and what inspires you? M: Dino Valls, Marwane Pallas, and Chuck Palahniuk. I get a lot of inspiration from other artists but a lot of the times they’re from movies, books or every day occurrences. R: Do you have a location you want to take pictures at and you never had the chance to do it yet? M: I think I could create some beautiful images at the Salt flats in Bolivia. I’m lucky to be living in a place with so many awesome outdoor locations. I still have a lot of exploring to do! R: If you could take photos of a successful model, who would it be and why? M: Barbara Palvin because of her face! Someone successful but less known would probably be Amanda Pizziconi or April Geary.

RAMONA: Tell us something interesting or funny about yourself. RENUKA: My cat’s named Rat, and I have a turtle named Captain Planet. I collect pieces of driftwood that resemble birds. I once snorkeled in Mexico when I didn’t know how to swim (I can swim now after swim lessons). I would like to be a cloud in my next life so I can cruise around the world for free. Interview R: When did you start your photography career and why? RENUKA: I knew I wanted to be a photographer when I was 16 years old. I made an image of freezing water with a high shutter speed and that fascinated me so much, the ability to stop time just for a fraction of a second. It felt like a superpower to me. R: Who and what inspires you? RENUKA: The biggest inspiration to me are the people I meet and see everyday. If I find a person interesting on the street I am not shy or afraid to ask them if I could photograph them. I am also drawn to shapes and shadows. Its a very prominent part of my images. Its always the simple things that draw me. R: Do you have a location you want to take pictures at and you never had the chance to do it yet? RENUKA: I would love to shoot in
Antarctica, a black and white series with models and penguins everywhere, i can see it in my head and it looks amazing :) 5. What are the ingredients to a great photo shoot? I think whats most important is having a good team, who can be professional as well as have a good time, when you are going location to location and doing multiple looks with multiple models its important for everyone to keep the energy up and positive. R: If you could take photos of a successful model, who would it be and why? RENUKA: My lifes goal is to do a black and white portrait of Hugh Jackman, I think he is one of those actors who are so talented in music dance and acting and still has a down to earth personality. I also would love to photograph Kiera Knightly and Rooney Mara. They have a very interesting classic look to them R: What else do you do besides photography? RENUKA: I read a lot, I am currently reading “Just Kids” by Patti Smith. I also sketch and paint abstact art. I love going to the beach and going to long drives, it inspires me. R: If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be? RENUKA: Animated.

RAMONA: Let’s start with you telling us something interesting or funny about yourself. CAROL: Well I’m pretty tall, almost six feet actually. It’s usually quite amusing to see the looks on people’s faces when they see me in person for the first time after talking to me through facebook. But actually, other than that I’m obsessed with puns, daydreaming about crazy things, and cheesecake. I’m also a swing dancer, which a lot of people didn’t know was in fact a thing, but it’s a great form of exercise and lots of fun! R: When did you start your photography career and why? C: I believe my career started when I first picked up a camera. Cheesy, I know, but something that I find so fascinating about this art form is how much it compels you. There was something that snapped in the first years I started taking photos that made me realize this wasn’t a phase, and was most certainly something I would be doing for a very long time.
R: Who and what inspires you? C: Inspiration is an interesting topic, because it’s different for everyone. I usually find myself inspired by things that stand out to me. More specifically, any crazy new location, wild clothing, or recent personal event can spark a theme for a shoot. All it really takes is one significant piece to springboard my mind into a whole concept. R: Do you have a location you want to take pictures at and you never had the chance to do it yet? C: Iceland, without a doubt. It’s most certainly one of the most beautiful, alienlike places on Earth. The dream of taking a great team out there and shooting for weeks is definitely on my bucket list of things to do. Hopefully it’ll happen! R: What are the ingredients to a great photo shoot? C: Personally, I believe the team is the most important part of a great shoot.
LUCY’S MAGAZINE
It’s impossible to handle everything by yourself, and I wouldn’t always want to, either. (To continue the cheese,) everyone is so unique and full of talent. Having the opportunity to combine different skill sets from different individuals is a great experience, because the outcome can only get better. R: If you could take photos of a successful model, who would it be and why? C: I’d love to shoot Coco Rocha. Dem cheekbones! But actually, I love her crazy, wild attitude and creative posing. Shooting with her looks like it would be so much fun, and her high energy would definitely match my own. R: What else do you do besides photography? C: Breathe, eat, sleep? I guess those are kind of important. Aside from all things photography, I’m also studying marketing at college as well as a
swing dancing. Sometimes balancing everything can be very close to a circus act, nonetheless I always try to keep myself busy. R: If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be? C: Unsatisfied, but in the best way possible. Photography is an addiction, and the desire to become better and better will always be prevalent to the extent where if I’m not shooting enough, it will bother me. This leads to a nagging motivation to always create, so I consider this feeling a good thing.

Location Atlanta Georgia though I also find myself in New York and LA quite a bit for work. RAMONA: Let’s start with you telling us something interesting or funny about yourself. ANGELA: Honestly, I could probably think of plenty of embarrassing stories beginning with high school where my skirt was accidentally tucked into my thong as I walked all the way through the school parking lot without realizing it. But some people find it interesting that I came from a family of athletes and ran track in high school and I would have pursued a proathlete career if I hadn’t decided to go the creative route instead. I have no regrets, but I still love sports! R: When did you start your photography career and why? A: I started out in front of the camera as an actress and model. I would come up with concepts on set of ways I’d like to shoot. A well-known photographer named Terry David Drew took me under his wing as a model, and encouraged my ideas as a creative. That was enough to prompt me to flip to the other side of the camera where I am now most comfortable. R: Who and what inspires you? A: Women empowering women inspires me. It was very difficult starting out, and unfortunately this business is very competitive. I was disappointed to find that many female photographers were not encouraging to other aspiring female photographers. Most of my interns have been females because I do not want them to have the same experience I did starting out as an assistant. Through encouraging
others we grow as creatives ourselves. I’m also inspired by some of the top working female photographers - Mary Ellen Mark and Jill Greenberg are two on my list. R: Do you have a location you want to take pictures at and you never had the chance to do it yet? A: Australia. I see other photographers take the most amazing photos there. There is so much I haven’t seen and done that I am excited to do. R: What are the ingredients to a great photo shoot? A: Your team. If one person on your team isn’t on point, your shoot can quickly turn into a waste of time for all involved. R: If you could take photos of a successful model, who would it be and why? A: That is a tough one because I love the supermodels of the late 80’s and early 90’s. However, I think I would have to say Kate Moss. At 40 years old she is still the reigning Queen Bee. I have yet to photograph a model of her calibre. R: What else do you do besides photography? A: I have a husband, three children young children and charity work. I believe in giving back, whether it’s through your time, your money, or your talents. You never want to get so wrapped up in yourself that your forget the needs of others. R: If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be? A: Amiable. And fortunately, I find that quality helps me connect with my subjects and clients as well.
