LETTER FROM THE EDITOR The Travel issue is really special to me since I carefully accepted the most creative and inspiring editorials from thousands that were submitted to us. I love every single one of them very much; they are unique and inspiring in their own way. It was hard to choose a cover because every photograph in this issue would have worked perfectly. The cover is shot by Katarina Hildebrandt from Germany. It is flawless,

ACADEMY OF ART S/S 16 Most designers come to fashion week to share their journey. For others, the journey has only just begun. Over the past ten years, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week has filtrated design student works from the Academy of Art into the public eye. Pay close attention to the futuristic metal overcoats, the high-end bohemian togas, and the emphasis of born-free sleeves -- they could be the trends of the century in ten more years. Monks chanted. An audience sat in the middle, while each look was presented around them, counter-clockwise. The auditory devices expressed thoughts apart from the showy essence of fashion week. We heard the sounds of time passing to an enthralling rhythm -- the mixture of anticipation and spaced-out tranquility that might drift throughout a land following a natural disaster. Since the devastating aftermath of the earthquake in Nepal this past Spring, Prabal Gurung’s SS ‘16 collection paid homage to his homeland and expressed hope for a peaceful recovery in this coming spring.

In a room lit by makeup mirrors, we were allured by the soft effervescence of beige lace to the sultry demure in the painted faces. Rachel Zoe brought some irresistible eye candy to the runway and everyone wanted a taste.

These models woke up on the wrong side of the bed to walk down the right side of the runway. With hair slicked back and unkept, shirts half-tucked in, athletic jacket sleeves rolled up, and traditional dresses paired with high tops, this collection played with the laid- back nature of humid summer afternoons in a quirky, twee fashion. XULY BET S/S 16
Fashion Week was full of surprises this year! One of my favorite by far was the impromptu show held right on the corner of 33rd and 8th Avenue. Designer Xuly Bet had his entourage of models posing on the streets of New York in vibrant traditional African garb turned into unique street wear. The show featured young students from the school Harlem Children Zone in Harlem, New York jump roping. There was a message bigger than just amazing clothes. Xuly Bet displayed his work on the streets of New York to show there can/is diversity in fashion. The glamorously raw production displayed that fashion has many faces. The surprise show was edgy, fun and overall chic. The brand Xuly Bet (translated as “Watch Out”) is created by Paris based African designer Lamine Koyate. The collection is known for its bold prints, recycled materials and slogans.
Photos by MARK ELZEY Article by AMANI ORR Xuly Bet dashiki’s have been a trend this summer seen worldwide at music festivals. It was amazing to see the young children, teachers, and mentor Double Dutch on the streets of New York, with the backdrop of models not only participating but encouraging the youth. The diversity of color, age and clothing was definitely a highlight from fashion week. As Ms. Cutrone said “ This show is for all the kids who wonder if there is a place for them in fashion- I say, Yes”. Such an incredible show with an even better message.

DZHUS DZHUS is a conceptual wear brand launched in 2010 by Ukrainian designer Irina Dzhus. Vanguard yet utilitarian, DZHUS’ visual identity derives from innovative structural solutions. The brand’s design concepts are based on interaction and transformation of construction modules, aimed to create new aesthetics of the form – unique and virtually archetypical at the same time, categoric but variable. Reserved colouring and technical textures are characteristic features of DZHUS. Each piece carries a distinctive ideological message. DZHUS’ collections are inspired by things at the edge of perception: from spiritual strongholds to abandoned industrial zones. DZHUS’ customer is a perfectionist who longs for an uncompromisingly complementary form for her own spiritual substance. Neither her age, nor occupation matters, but only her ability to comprehend a piece of clothing intellectually. DZHUS is a vegetarian-friendly brand. All the products are made of violence-free materials.

an interview with
Elizabeth & Tyg by Liz Dungate photographer
Tyg and Elizabeth Davison really are model sisters. They would happily do everything together! Including being represented by the same agencies in three different countries! I recently visited the girls and their wonderful, generous mother, Colleen, in New York during NYFW. I snapped photos of them as we wandered around Little Italy, relaxing at home, and I also had the amazing opportunity to photograph Elizabeth backstage before walking for Coach (she also walked Alexander Wang earlier in the week), and then captured Tyg’s triumphant return home (tired but glowing, still in show make-up) after walking for Marc Jacobs. They’ve both travelled so far (literally and figuratively) since I first met and photographed them in Vancouver, Canada, but they had something special even then, and it’s not just that they are international fashion models. Decide for yourself after reading their own words: LIZ: If I interviewed you a year from now, what achievements in modeling would you hope to tell me about? TYG: I would have to say tossing my flowing blonde mane over my shoulder as I’m shot on the beaches of Maui...Okay no. I’m pretty happy with everything I’ve been lucky enough to do so far..but If I had to choose, I would hope to have had the chance to work with some of the incredible designers again that I already have. It’s an honor to be able to be involved in the creative process and it means a lot to have designers trust you enough to use you again. ELIZABETH: I am actually really happy and content with what I have given the opportunity to do so far. I can’t say that I have one goal that in a single year I hope would become a reality... I would however once in this lifetime DIE to have Steven Miesel shoot my baby (Tyg) and I. LIZ: What’s your secret power? The thing that casting directors and clients respond to the most? TYG: My secret power...my ability to reflect light. I am so pale I can blind people. That or maybe the fact that I make an effort to understand who I’m casting for. Different designers and casting directors want different things. I think it can give you a real advantage if you’re aware of what you’re casting for. ELIZABETH: My gorgeous elf like features. Teehee, no I think the thing that casting directors respond to the most is that I trust myself going into castings. I trust that I will do the very best that I can and no less, and I am a firm believer that if I am meant to do something I will no matter what. I also have absolutely no expectations of what the response will be. I think they can pick up on that and I think they respect it. LIZ: What makes you feel the most blissfully happy, or content, in the moment, no matter how crazy everything else is? TYG: What makes me happy no matter what.. Hmm..ELIZABETH. We are obsessed with one another and we know it. We can recognize if the other is feeling overwhelmed and having someone who knows you so well and will help you make time to decompress is such an amazing gift. We are inseparable and we are both madly in love with food too, so lurking new places for the best yummies always brings joys a plenty. ELIZABETH: Eating Big Macs and laughing with my baby. (Fun fact- we are the biggest foodies you will ever meet.) LIZ: What do you dream about doing “someday”, years from now? TYG: What I dream of doing “someday,” would be being able to travel more extensively. Not in a professional capacity but for the personal experience of learning about different cultures and languages and art and connecting with the different people around the world. Living the rest of my life knowing I’ve seen everything I set out to see. That and skydiving. That and skydiving and trying every flavor of Ben and Jerry’s.
LUCY’S 51
ELIZABETH: Being on a tropical beach selling coconut juice and homemade meals & goodies with my momma and baby (Tyg). LIZ: What is the weirdest, yet most endearing thing, you’ll admit to knowing about your sister? TYG: “And yeah, so like sure.” ....what?? Elizabeth tends to finish conversations you were having with her about three hours before that out of the blue. I’m fabulous so I understand her but anyone else listening just looks around for the person who she might be talking to. ELIZABETH: Foot note: She is OCD about feet. Don’t show her your feet. Don’t touch her with your feet. Don’t touch her feet. Don’t put your feet on her bed. Don’t let her smell your feet. Don’t pick anything up of hers with your feet. Don’t. Don’t. Don’t. Ten little piggies, no. no. no.
LIZ: Favorite shows/editorials: TYG: I really have enjoyed a lot of the shoots I’ve done but it’s the friendships that come from them that I love the most. Having to pick a specific shoot as a favorite though, I would have to say shooting “Big Love,” a story for V Magazine I got to shoot with my sissy. Because like I mentioned...yes...we are obsessed with one another. Working with her is the best. Favorite show...am I lame to say I loved them all? Elizabeth says yes. I’m okay with that. So much time and creativity and work goes in to every show and not a lot of people get to see it. I’m happy to be a part of each and every one so far. ELIZABETH: I absolutely LOVED doing Teen Vogue and Flare Magazine. Established magazines like that have such dynamic teams, I always feel so special to be able to make those contacts and meet the different quirky fashion geniuses out there Alexander Wang and Prada were also really amazing experiences to have. Working with the Alexander Wang team again for a second season in a row was really special for me given that I know everyone there and am lucky enough to be able to call most of them my friends. Prada on the other hand being the first time I have ever done that show was a complete thrill. I loved meeting everyone and being able to see what goes on behind the scenes. I have been a very lucky girl this season and could not be happier and more excited about each new connection and opportunity I have been rewarded with. Two sisters, Ally and Albina Mataj, felt inspired by their Grecian journeys and wanted to create a line that encapsulated the positive energy they experienced overseas and the sass of their native, New York City. Bonheur. accessorizing the wanderlust in us all. “We travel non-stop, and every single country we go to we come back with a little bit of inspiration.” The sisters explain, “We try and always keep in mind adding a downtown mix to everything we do.” Bonheur Jewelry provides pieces made with love and care, using 18k Gold, Sterling Silver and Healing Stones, creating modern, fun and clean designs that manage to enhance your look whilst not overpowering it. Bonheur – translating to ‘happiness’ from French is more than fitting for the two sisters behind the design of this contemporary brand with a bohemian flare.

A Gentleman Caller In our story, A Gentleman Caller, we pay homage to a time when glamour and attention to detail were more common. To a time when dates were planned, when women took hours getting ready, and when dinner wasn’t something eaten between subway stops but was rather an event to be shared. Some of my own influences in formal wear started at an early age. I can remember growing up watching classic movies Singing in the Rain and Roman Holiday. Even my dad regularly sported a suit when going out. In those movies and at that time a lot of thought and planning went into the tailoring of formal wear, especially in menswear. Other designers have also taken more notice of men’s fashion. This year the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) pushed an initiative to allow designers to show their menswear collections separately from the constraints and scheduling of the women’s presentations. Men’s fashion week has expanded from a side project of many designers to having its own fashion week this year in New York. And since there where less designers presenting at the mens presentations many people, including myself, agree that there was a very “chill” vibe to the events.

Call it supply and demand but ever since the recent trend of turning classic novels, such as Great Gatsby into blockbusters, I’ve noticed a resurgence in men’s formal wear. For example, Tom Ford’s latest menswear collection definitely focused on men’s suits. Of course, Ford has a usual knack for tailoring and formal wear, but this collection played with the suits structure and textiles. However, his signature bow ties remained throughout this latest collection. So maybe our story will inspire you to dust off your dancing shoes, grab a cocktail, and make a special plan with your own special someone.
