TOMAAS’ work is fascinating and projects perfection. How does he do it? TOMAAS believes that fashion photography is a team effort. In order for a concept to succeed, the whole team has to understand the vision and move in the same direction. He thinks that success especially comes when the right teams are put together. Another factor that brings inspiration for TOMAAS are photo shoots on locations that inspire him, “My inspiration from the varied locations of my photo shoots most likely emanates from my passion for photojournalism

and

travelling.

Sometimes

an

interesting location can be a story in itself. A location will work best when you manipulate it or put it together in a logical way. During the preparation for a photo shoot a lot of time goes into finding the right location for the story you are trying to tell.” – TOMAAS

Some of TOMAAS’ work tends to have a science fiction feel to it but no connection to a particular place in time or history. What I like most about his work is that the images retain a timeless otherworldly quality to them, Tomaas explains, “The backgrounds, while familiar, are close ups that do not give too much away about where the photos were taken.” PLASTIC FANTASTIC Photographer | TOMAAS www.tomaas.com Stylist | Carla Engler Represented by Bryant Bantry Reps Make Up Artist | Fiona Thatcher For Make Up For Ever Hair Stylist | Seiji Uehara, Represented By Ennis, Inc Model | Lisette Van Den Brand @ Ford Models

After taking a look at TOMAAS’ website I saw a pattern; he tends to utilize the element of contrast to bring out the beauty in his work. I agree with TOMAAS when he said, “I think that in life in general as well as in photography the journey is filled with contrasts.” What I also like is that his website portrays two different types of images: the fashion section with flawless women that represent his professional life’s work, and his travel section featuring photography from all around the world. “You will see images of ‘every day’ people with little money but who seem very happy in their life who have never known of “high fashion” and probably never will. Why are there such contrasts in my life? Once again I cannot say. Maybe I like diverse experiences to avoid boredom or maybe, and far more likely, I like to stay grounded and get to know all types of people from all parts of life.” – TOMAAS

“I will keep creating more images and hope that my past and present work opens new doors for me. I have found that as more of my work becomes known more opportunities have presented themselves to me. This to me is the most exciting aspect of my work. Once I let go of my images and they are published they take on a life of their own and how my images effect other people is the greatest joy of my work”. –TOMAAS

MIRROR/MIRROR Article by Stylist, Belinda Martin

As a fashion stylist, I gather inspiration from all around me such as fashion collections, movies, and culture. And while living in New York, friends and I take every chance we get to indulge in our southern traditions, one of these being Derby Day. In this editorial, I collaborated with milliner Linda Hafner from HAFNERHATS.COM to commemorate and indulge in this southern past time. Linda’s background in millinery started in the late 1990s while studying at New York’s FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology). She later apprenticed under the famous NY milliner Suzanne Newman, of Suzanne Couture Millinery. I’ve been a fan of Suzanne’s designs for years after seeing her hats in publications from Harper’s Bazaar to Vanity Fair to name a few. Also, both designers frequently worn by several Derby Day attendees. I asked Linda what she liked best about being a milliner and she explained to me how she enjoyed the instant gratification in the creative process. “When you’re creative, almost everything is inspirational”, she said. She also likes to use a combination of traditional and experimental materials for her designs. Traditional materials she would use include fur felts, straws, feathers, and flowers, but she also uses unexpected objects like woven stainless steel, and porcupine quills. “I got the porcupine quills at Creel and Gow on the Upper East Side. I didn’t even know what they were at first, but they were so unique I decided I had to incorporate them into a design.” she explained. In this editorial, the inspiration for the model was “to be looking in the mirror” to day dream or imagine what could be on the other side. The other side is the naughty verses nice, the flirty verses cool in all of us. I liked to encourage these juxtapositions in my styling just like Linda uses them in the materials she incorporates in her designs.

Article by Liz Dungate I think of myself mostly as an art director, even though my involvement in a shoot may also require a more hands-on approach. For instance the hand-crafted props created for this shoot, in addition to the photography, styling, make-up and hairstyling. Sometimes I just see where I want to go with it and doing it myself is the straightest line. I also like to collaborate with other people because their skills are so brilliant, or I feel the story would be better with another creative’s influence... and sometimes simply because I love working with great people on a shared project. Basically I will do whatever it takes to tell the visual story in my head. This story is about self-imposed “cages; the beautiful, elaborate and uncomfortable structures that women have adorned themselves with throughout history, from Elizabethan collars to Edwardian motoring veils, then I juxtaposed them with light, contemporary, breezy summer blouses to emphasize the restrictiveness of the headpieces.

MANY SHADES

OF SPRING Tby Danielle De Souza

Spring has bloomed and this season I want to dare you to break the rules of fashion. Unite yourself with a group of individuals who see “fashion” a differet way. You’ve seen the quote, “be yourself, everyone else is taken.” The same can apply to your style; own yours and don’t be afraid to start something new and look different then everyone else. I often think of myself as a camilion; I change my style more often then the average person, and I guess that’s a good thing; it makes one unpredictable and interesting. Some days Im a vixen and some days im a preppy girl, and there are are days when I like to mix everything I like.Weather this season you’ll show your style and creativity through your clothes, your make up or your hair; make sure that you make a statement and that people will talk about you as someone who’s bold and creative, but most off all not afraid to change and to be different then everyone else. I’ve noticed in my personal life that I always get complements on my shoes and my lipstick colors. I love pink and red lipstciks but I own many shades and I make sure to use them all! Find something that you like and enjoy and make that your own fashion statment. You can try and tell me that you have to abide by a standard but, no matter what you do as a profession, there’s allways something you can do to make a look your own even if you have to stick to a uniform. You can be the difference in our own office. I remember as a kid, I could never decide what my favorite color was until I came to the conclusion that using them in the right shade, and in the right item; any color could be my favorite. Don’t be so caught up on what others are doing, it might be the season to show off a bit more legs but maybe you have a better way to bare skin this spring. Not every item, and fashion trend is a “one size fits all”. Dress to your stand of beauty, not people’s standard of what you should wear. What’s better then being different when it comes to fashion? Your friends will always be talking about how creative you are and many opportunities might open up for you just because you see things in many different shapes and in many different lights. It can mean something for you in the future that may be more than just fashion.

It may be a career or a personal accomplishment as an individual. I could tell you what to wear according to what the many fashion shows and celebrities are wearing, but that wouldn’t have the same impact as incouraging you to experiment more and dare to be different. What counts is creativity and having your own identity in the world of fashion. This concept is what us as viwers find so interesting when we open a magazine or watch a fashion show; we see something diferent! No matter where in the world you live; you can always explore and experiemnt with other cultures’ fashion, and you can always imcorporate something “old” with something new. You can play contrast, mix prints, textures; and you can layer even in the spring, the possibilities are endless. As we all know, it’s a given that this season calls for light airy cothes and brighter colors, but how will you put that together? This time of the year will always bring flowers, and longer days, what will you be bringing to life this spring, what is your true color? www.danielle-souza.com LUCY’S Magazine

Josephine Cardin is a former dancer turned fine arts photographer who focuses on figurative work. With inspiration from music, literature and life, Cardin is passionate about creating work that breathes human emotion. Always Like This was inspired by a quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender Is The Night, “I don’t ask you to love me always like this but I ask you to remember, somewhere inside of me there will always be the person I am tonight.” The series aims to exude the feelings and emotions revolving around heartbreak and the loss of love. Something we can all certainly relate to. www.cardinphotography.com www.facebook.com/jocardinphotography

Article by Jake Hicks I know you hear it a lot but this shoot with model Amber Tutton really was as good they get. I’ve been shooting a long time now so although I can make changes and adjustments to the shot on the fly whilst shooting it can certainly be extremely beneficial for all involved and especially the final image if as a photographer, you get the opportunity to really concentrate on your craft without having to help everybody else do theirs. Chandni the makeup artist and myself have worked on many shoots together in the past and I’ve always been blown away by her work. I retouch all my own shots so I know how much time a great makeup artist like Chandni can save me in post pro. More importantly though Chandni has worked with me enough that she knows my shooting style and what will work best without any big debates. She’s also aware that I like to shoot a lot with coloured lighting so usually every shoot opens with ‘What colours are we shooting with today Jake?’ and based on my response she will know exactly what will work best. As a photographer I love this self confidence, I know I don’t have to worry about it and I can concentrate on just shooting. This particular shoot with Amber Tutton stood out to me though because not only was Chandni bringing some great ideas to the table but Amber brought her A-game and then some. Like I mentioned earlier, as a photographer it’s great to be able to concentrate on what you do best and with Amber I was certainly able to do just that. With very little direction at the start about the directionality of ‘key-lights’ and cropping etc Amber went straight to work on producing some outstanding poses and passionate expressions, something that I love to see in my images and something that is very difficult to fake. Amber really is an exceptional model and its rare to find somebody with such range that needs very little direction. These shots are some of my most favourite shots I’ve ever taken and I think that’s mainly in part to the fact that Chandni, Amber and myself were all able to get on and do what we really do best, as result I felt we all worked seamlessly together to produce some stunning images.

The Symbiosis Between Women and Gold Jacqueline Wardeski, a dedicated and capable photographer from Germany, specialized in fashion and beauty art photography, produced this editorial in collaboration with the newcomer model Letizia and the creative and talented Hair & Make up Artist Yvonne Schlaback. The aspiration was to create a photo series that shows the modern woman in combination with the current beauty trends. One of the most important elements in beauty and fashion scene this year is gold. You will find it as details and accessories on clothes, shoes, bags, jewelery plus as a part of several Make ups. Gold makes a women feel beautiful, graceful, luxury, glamorous, confident, strong and sexy. All this reveals us the modern woman. So the team decided to generate a photo gallery focused on gold. No clothes should irritate or divert from the main theme so it became a pure beauty portrait editorial. With the changing styles the model Letizia shows up her different emotions and poses.Yvonne created a few various Hair- and Make up styles, which you can use everyday to pimp up your look with the trend metal. Just a touch of golden eye shadow, golden eye liner or fingernails painted in metallic gold are perfect for the daily Make up. For an impressive evening look, dab some gold on your red lips and put your hair into a high fishtail braid and fix it on top of your head or combine it with an undone hair knot for a casual look. The editorial series “Lucid” was created on the basis of having the face of beauty be open to the viewer to find the beauty in their own perception. Through the darkness comes immaculate beauty that offers eye catching design between the merging of model and makeup. Each photo being unique in its own right for the viewer to absorb the prominence of a dream that is set forth by an explosion of neon colors.
