Interview with Artist/Fashion Illustrator, Madelyne Templeton RAMONA: Tell us some interesting facts about yourself! MADELYNE: I love to clean, and keep things organized. My room for example, I never leave without making my bed, fluffing my pillows, and making sure everything looks neat. I’m one step away from alphabetizing my VHS collection. R: When did you start making illustrations and painting and why? M: It all started back when I was diagnosed with a comprehensive and reading disorder. Verbal interaction was a challenge and something I struggle to this day. Art became an outlet for me, providing me with a new way of learning, and expressing my thoughts. R: What do you love most about art? M: I love how art can be expressed in many different ways, in any kind of mediums. I love the heart and soul people put in their work, which gives the art an emotional feel. Painting our hearts out and thoughts for others to see. R: What are some of your other hobbies? M: I secretly love collecting old vintage tins. Especially the chocolate ones, gold tin boxes that have designs and patterns are a must. R: If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be? M: Gullible R: Where did you learn to do this? Or are you a natural? M: I learned on my own growing up. I loved seeing things as they are and admire the different shades of color around me. I later began expanding my knowledge by attending summer art programs at 2 colleges during high school: CAL ARTS California Institute of the Arts & SFAI San Francisco Arts Institute. Which really helped me to believe in myself and push for my goal to become a successful artists. R: What is your favorite illustration/painting and why? Is there a story behind it? M: My favorite Illustration that I’ve done is my watercolor painting called, “stillness” It reminds me of my sister and I getting allergies over the spring time in Northern California. There’s also many praying mantis and flowers blooming everywhere. LUCY’S Magazine 46

RAMONA: Tell us something unique about yourself. ALICE: I love food ! So much that I can organize my travels depending on the food culture R: What do you love most about photography? A: I find incredible that it can fix beautiful instants, charm of a gesture, an expression. I love feeling a kind of grace R: Who and what inspires you? A: I love looking at people, the light shining on faces, the beauty of the body’s curves and lines. I admire small details invisible at first sight, a tiny reflection in the skin or a slight curl of the hair. I’m also inspired by a sweetness and an aesthetic of the paintings from the 19th century that can be find in some of my pictures R: From your experience, what are the ingredients to a great photo shoot? A: Team work ! Mutual comprehension between all the people working in the shoot, creativity, daring and passion R: If you could take photos of a successful model, who would it be and why? A: There are so much beauties ! It’s an impossible choice. Each of them have this little twist that makes her unique. But I can say that I prefer old fashion beauties, with delicate shape and subtle beauty R: What else do you do besides photography? A: I travel as much as I can, as I love discovering new cultures (and food!) R: If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be? A: Passionate

RAMONA: Tell us something unique about yourself. LORRAINE: For a while, I wanted to be a garden photographer. Really. I spent a couple of years in Japan where I discovered the aesthetics of Zen Reductivism, which are reflected in many temple gardens. I’ve done short documentaries on Japanese and French gardens, and was quite serious about it at the time. In retrospect, however, I’m happy that I took a different path. R: What do you love most about photography? L: That feeling I get when I’m shooting something that I know will be good. It’s so exciting! It makes me giddy with anticipation. I love working with models, the intimacy that capturing a part of their personalities creates, the exchange of ideas, and the joint effort. And last but not least, the creation of visuals. It stimulates me more than anything else. R: Who and what inspires you? L: The one person who inspires me the most is my beautiful friend, New York artist Miya Ando. She works with metals and light. Thematically her work discusses such concepts as transcendence and impermanence, while visually it is serene, mysterious, abstract and simply sublime. She’s one of the most extraordinary and gifted people I have ever met. R: From your experience, what are the ingredients to a great photo shoot? L: A fantastic model. A contemporary and refined location - I like minimalist spaces. Great light. Everyone on set giving the shoot his or her full attention. Focus and calm. The latter is really important. I try to minimize distractions and hectic. R: If you could take photos of a successful model, who would it be and why? L: Kate Moss. She’ll always be an icon. R: What else do you do besides photography? L: Video production. After graduating from UCLA Film School, I worked primarily in the art world, doing artist and museum portraits. I still shoot quite a bit of video. I’m also an avid yoga practitioner. R: If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be? L: Determined.
