W E LCO M E TO B E A RS TE D GO LF CLU B Established in 1895, Bearsted Golf Club is a superb 18 hole parkland course situated in the Heart of the Garden of England. Tucked away in the historic village of Bearsted it offers a golﬁng oasis just 2 miles from Maidstone the County town of Kent. With tree lined fairways the course provides a tough but fair challenge to even the most serious golfer with stunning views across the North Downs. The course stretches to 6,476 yards off the white tees with a par of 71 and standard scratch of 72 for Men and 74 for Ladies.

We are a friendly Club, with a great atmosphere and an active membership with a varied social calendar of events that will appeal to all. We welcome societies and green fee visitors throughout the year to enjoy our splendid course, superb facilities and excellent food and drink in the Clubhouse.

H I S TO RY O F TH E CLU B Bearsted Golf Club dates back to 1895, originally a nine-hole course, built on 52 acres of land owned by Sir George Hampson and known as Maidstone Golf Club. A keen golfer, Sir George became the ﬁrst president of the Club and was to be named Club Captain on no fewer than six occasions.

In 1914, Bearsted Golf Club was set up and remained on the present site, while Maidstone Golf Club members moved to a new course in Oakwood Park where they lasted until closure in 1962. It is of interest that in 1891 another Maidstone Golf Club was formed at East Hampton, New York and still exists today. It is now one of the oldest and most exclusive Golf Clubs in the United States.

The golf course has undergone many changes and improvements over the years, notably in 1923 when with the lease of more land the course was extended to 18-holes measuring 5,137 yards. To mark the occasion, an exhibition match was played between the great Harry Vardon (six times Open Champion) and Mark Seymour, the professional at Cobham. More than 200 people paid to watch the match, which was duly won by Vardon, who was fortiﬁed before play began by the consumption of several large whiskeys!

In 1979, after the acquisition of Seager Farm, the course was lengthened still further to 6381 yards. Designed by Club Professional Bob Henderson, the ofﬁcial opening of the extended course was marked by a match featuring 30 professionals including Max Faulkner, an Open champion, and former junior member Paul Hoad together with 90 amateur players. West Ham and England footballer Trevor Brooking was the special guest.

This was not Faulkner’s ﬁrst visit to Bearsted. He also played in an exhibition match in 1969 to raise money for Cancer Relief. Bernard Gallagher, Brian Barnes and Nick Job also took part. The Club has played host to many exhibition games for charity and Ryder Cup golfers Dai Rees and Peter Alliss were among those to take part in a match in support of the Forces Aid Society in 1965.

We offer a wide variety of membership options from junior through to full adult, with categories designed to accommodate all levels of golfers. To attract juniors to the game we offer attractive rates for our junior membership all with no joining fee (aged 9-13 and 14-18) and for Intermediate age groups there is an escalator scale now in place for 19 - 35 year olds.

GO LF AT B E A RS TE D Our members enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year. Aside from tees reserved for competitions, there are only tee bookings on a Sunday morning, which means that unlike many other Clubs, you can just turn up and play.

Men

There is a strong Men’s section at Bearsted, with two teams entered in the Kent League, a scratch competition featuring four pairs playing fourball betterball matchplay. Teams also take part in the Guilford Trophy, a scratch knockout throughout East Kent. 12 | w w w.b e a r s te d g o l fc l u b.c o.u k

There are many friendly matches for the Men against other Clubs in Kent. Generally, there are around 12 ﬁxtures throughout the season, with the away matches providing the opportunity to enjoy some of the County’s other excellent courses. The friendly matches for the Men are generally played on a Wednesday and the Mixed matches on Sundays. There are also ﬁve Men’s and Mixed knockout competitions running throughout the summer and a Winter League running from October to March.

The most prized trophy is the Club Championship, featuring 18 holes of golf on a Saturday afternoon and another 18 on the following morning. The keen golfer in search of a casual and friendly game is never short of company, with informal roll-ups most weekdays.

Seniors

The Over-60s and Over-70s also enjoy league competition. Home and away matches, played on weekdays, take place against Gillingham, Mid Kent, Rochester and Cobham, Redlibbets, Sheerness and Sittingbourne. The format is fourball betterball, with 5 pairs playing off a maximum handicap of 18 and 24 respectively. At the end of the season, there are two further events; the ﬁrst is when all the teams

in the respective leagues gather at one of the Clubs for an ‘End of Season Jamboree’, the winners being the team with the highest aggregate stableford score; the second event is when the respective winners of the 60s and 70s leagues gather for a ﬁnal play-off. In parallel with these league matches, there is a home and away knockout competition involving Clubs throughout Kent. There are also 12 home and away friendly matches against local Clubs with a lunch to

follow. In addition, the Veterans Section run singles and pairs knockout competitions and at least seven major trophy competitions, one of the most popular being the Vets Open, which is a team competition and attracts entries from 30 Clubs all over Kent. The Veterans Section also organise less formal ‘pound in the middle’ competitions on 2 Monday mornings each month. Otherwise it’s roll up, mix up and play most Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.

We have an active and welcoming Ladies section at Bearsted offering membership to Ladies of all golﬁng abilities whether new to the game or returning after a break. With regular organised weekly competitions throughout the year, the section regularly competes in competitions and friendlies against other Clubs.

Our Ladies enjoy friendly matches against other Clubs during the year; these are played as fourball betterball and are a very popular ﬁxture with the Ladies. The County’s premier competitions are well supported with teams being entered in various events throughout the year such as the Pearson Trophy and the Mail on Sunday National Golf Club Classic.

Our Lady members enjoy medal and stableford competitions each month. There are also a great many honours board competitions, the most prestigious of which is the Club Championship, a 36-hole stroke play event. We are always keen to welcome new Lady members of all golﬁng abilities and our Ladies ensure new members feel welcome both on and off the course.

GO LF AT B E A RS TE D Juniors Our junior membership offers attractive rates for age ranges 9-13 and 14-18 and there is no joining fee.

Many of our young golfers have gone on to great success in the golﬁng world, with some having competed on the European Tour, Challenge Tour and Euro Pro tour, and in the Open Championship.

All juniors have full access to our 18 hole course and excellent practise facilities. They can enter junior competitions and those with competition handicaps can compete in main Club competitions.

V I S ITO R S Visiting golfers are always given a warm welcome at Bearsted anytime Monday to Friday and in the afternoons at weekends by prior arrangement with the Professional or General Manager. All visitors must report to the Pro Shop and obtain and display a visitor’s bag tag before commencing play.

We have a visitors booking system in operation, but it is advisable to phone in advance to ensure there is no competition being held at the Club at the time you are hoping to play. Our Professional will advise you as to the best time to play for a more relaxed and enjoyable round.

Reduced rates are available to guests of members, juniors and holders of the Kent County Card. We often run special offers during the year, details of which can be found on our website, or alternatively sign up to our mailing list to be the ﬁrst to receive details of our Open events.

In common with other Clubs, we have a standard dress code, details of which can be found on our website.

O PE N CO M PE TITI O N S We run five Open events each year, where golfers with a current competition handicap are warmly invited to enter. These events are very popular and you are advised to submit your entry early. Places are usually allocated on a first come first served basis. First up is the Veteran’s Open, generally held in the middle of May. This is an 18-hole Stableford competition for teams of three visitors plus one Bearsted member, with the two best scores on each hole to count.

The Festival of Golf week takes place in mid-June and visitors with a CONGU handicap are invited to play in the midweek competitions. Full details of the events can be found on the Club Website. The Bearsted Men’s Open, held in late June, is a Kent Order of Merit event played as a 36hole medal for players with a handicap of 18 or below. There are prizes for the best scratch and handicap score.

The Ladies Open takes place at the end of June played as a three-ball team event and is always well supported by Clubs throughout Kent. The ﬁnal Open event of the season is the Mixed Open. An 18-hole greensomes Stableford, played in fours and usually takes place in September. Please note that adherence to our dress code is a condition of entry. TH E CLU B H OU S E The Club has great bar and restaurant facilities with both a lounge bar and casual bar where golfers and guests can enjoy a drink and light snacks overlooking the course. The casual bar offers a relaxed atmosphere regularly showing sports events on the large screen TV, while the lounge bar is situated next to our large restaurant.

Both bars open out onto a large veranda with views across the par three 1st and 18th holes. The popular restaurant offers high quality food at affordable prices served throughout the day with lunchtime specials also available. A carvery lunch is served in the main restaurant every Sunday. This facility can also be hired out for private functions for those special occasions.

TH E COU RS E The course measures 6476 yards off the competition tees with a par of 71 and a standard scratch of 72 for Men and 74 for Ladies.

Few players record a score to match their handicap, making it a real challenge for all those who play the course.

Renowned for its long challenging par fours (with a third over 462 yards) the tree lined parkland course and fast true greens built to USGA speciﬁcations ensures the course always provides a good test of golf.

Unusually the course starts and ﬁnishes with a par three, both offering completely different challenges and requiring solid tee shots.

Water can be found in the form of ponds, ditches or both on several holes, particularly on the inward nine and the course features some beautiful landscaped and challenging holes. Our practise facilities include a large practice putting green, driving nets and practice ground, all situated close to the Clubhouse.

Hole 1 (Railway) 143 yards, par 3 Our course starts with a short par three with a difﬁcult green sloping down from the bank on the left. Watch out for the railway. Hole 2 (Old School) 345 yards, par 4 A difﬁcult blind drive on this straight par four hole, with out of bounds on the left and trouble waiting in the trees on the right.

Hole 3 (Sir George Hampson) 464 yards, par 4 A very long left-to-right dogleg hole which is difﬁcult to reach in two shots, especially with two fairway bunkers waiting to catch out your second shot.

Hole 4 (Honeyhill Woods) 439 yards, par 4 A good drive will leave you well placed to reach the green with your second shot. However, mind the ditch and out of bounds on the right.

Hole 5 (The Shaw) 364 yards, par 4 A straight fairway to the green, but with a ditch hazard to the right.

Hole 6 (The Hump) 516 yards, par 5 A long par ﬁve sloping from left to right, with longer grass and small ditch strategically placed to help stop your ball from going into the woods - surprisingly, on the right again.

Hole 8 (Downs View) 162/211 yards, par 3 This par three involves a tee shot across a valley to the well-guarded green.

Hole 9 (Halfway) 383 yards, par 4 This very inviting hole is frequently used for the longest drive competitions, but be careful. Out of bounds awaits a loose tee shot to the left, as does the pond on the right.

Hole 10 (Twin Oaks) 295 yards, par 4 A relatively short par four with the green just beyond the two tall trees in the distance.

Hole 11 (Centenary Bridge) 371 yards, par 4 A dogleg right with a very inviting tee shot down the hill, and over the stream and bridge. Beware of the ponds either side of the fairway.

Hole 12 (Water Meadow) 401 yards, par 4 A good straight drive is called for on this very long par 4 hole, with trouble again waiting for a loose tee shot to the right and the pond on the right for the long hitters.

Strategically placed bunkers await each shot from tee to green. Hole 14 (Reservoir) 371 yards, par 4 A tee shot to a wide open fairway sloping from left to right where a ditch and bunker often catch out the unaware. A second shot which strays into the ditch across the fairway is rarely rewarded with a playable third shot.

Hole 15 (Seager Way) 526 yards, par 5 A ditch across the fairway is in range for the long hitters, and the green is located at the top of the hill on this long par ﬁve.

Hole 17 (Brickﬁeld) 386 yards, par 4 A long drive back up the hill again, where a shot to the right of centre is needed to avoid being blocked out by the trees to the left.

Hole 16 (Chapel Lane) 179 yards, par 3 A short par three with a tee shot to the green at the bottom of the hill.

Hole 18 (Sandy Mount) 174 yards, par 3 Our course ﬁnishes with a straight downhill par three where the valley in front of the green catches out many players.

As you take the short walk from the car park to the Clubhouse you cannot help but notice the immaculately prepared practice putting green in front of the Clubhouse. This is the perfect way to acclimatise yourself to the superb USGA-speciﬁcation greens.

For those wishing to practice the long game there is a practice area to the rear of the Clubhouse between the 2nd and 9th fairways. At the near end of the practice ground there is a green with bunkers, to work on perfecting those up and downs or sand saves which can make the difference between an average round and a very good one. A pair of practice nets can be found by the upper car park, which are ideal for getting loose before taking to the course.

Get Skin Savvy

Regular skin checking will help you get to know your skin and catch anything early, making it easier to treat. Type of skin cancer: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) & squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)

How to perform a skin check: Once a month, examine your skin in a well-lit area, noting all moles, marks and spots, charting the location, appearance, and dimensions of each. Taking pictures can be helpful, as can the help of ‘another’ for those ‘hardto-see’ places:

These are the most common forms of skin cancer, which arise within the top layer of the skin, appearing anywhere, but mostly on sun exposed sites.

FI N D U S The Club is located three miles east of Maidstone, Kent, and less than two miles from either junction 7 (Maidstone/ Sittingbourne) or junction 8 (Motorway Services/ Leeds Castle) of the M20 motorway.

Public transport The nearest railway station is Bearsted, which is less than 200 yards from the Clubhouse. All trains stop at Bearsted Station because it is close to Leeds Castle, which is a very popular tourist attraction.
