WELCOME The Arun Yacht Club is a friendly, family-focused community sailing club situated on the west bank of the River Arun in Littlehampton, West Sussex. The Club specialises in dinghy and cruiser racing as well as providing a base for cruising sailors intent on exploring the South Coast and beyond. Its facilities include a large car park, secure dinghy pen, moorings for approximately 100 cruisers, a dedicated training block and a clubhouse with changing rooms for ladies and gentlemen. The clubhouse boasts a galley, well-stocked bar, and a large lounge area. A balcony overlooking the river is very popular during the summer months.

The AYC caters year-round for a wide range of sailing interests, from the thrill of dinghy and cruiser racing to the more relaxed atmosphere of organised club cruises. We also hold frequent social events to suit all tastes. For those embarking on the road to sailing proficiency, the club is an RYA-recognised teaching establishment, and our training staff would be pleased to discuss any aspect of training with you. The Club has a vibrant family-oriented atmosphere and encourages cadets to become fully involved in club activities. If you think you might be interested in joining, please do not hesitate to call the club office on 01903 716 016 or drop by and one of the members will be pleased to show you around!

CLUB HISTORY The Arun Yacht Club was founded in Littlehampton, West Sussex, in 1956, the inaugural meeting taking place on Sunday 8th April in the Red Cross Room in the gardens of Winterton Lodge, East Street, the home of the parents of Pip Mitchell, one of the Club’s founding members. More than 90 people attended and agreed to form a family sailing club, where ladies and children could share membership on an equal basis, which was a novelty in the area at that time. Some 95 members signed up at that meeting and this number increased rapidly to 160 in just a month and to more than 300 by October 1956. Rather strangely, the Club burgee was decided before the Club’s name! The black diamond was chosen to depict the then top-mark on the east side of the harbour entrance, against the background of the golden sands of Littlehampton. Debate over the name was between the Arun

6 | www.arunyc.co.uk

Sailing Club and the Diamond Yacht Club, so the inevitable compromise resulted in the name we know today. After a brief search for a suitable clubhouse, which included the possibility of a top flat in River Road, an old wartime motor-torpedo boat, lying on the west bank of the river and previously used as a houseboat, called “Lisboa”, was purchased for around £200, financed by loans from the early members. To make the craft more easily accessible, there were many working parties of enthusiastic members who excavated a channel and then manhandled the boat further up the beach before she could be officially opened as the Club’s premises in July 1956. Even then, access was from a very steep ladder which was considerably easier to climb than descend, particularly after one of the Club’s legendary Fitting Out or Laying Up Parties! It is from this origin that the Club still uses the name “Lisboa” as its call sign on VHF channel 37 (M1).

The founding committee and leading lights comprised Dr Keith Keith (Commodore), a 1936 Olympic yachting trialist, and his wife, Molly, Charles Rang (Vice Commodore), Brigadier Napier (Rear Commodore), Tommy Heasman (Hon. Secretary), Jimmy Winter (Hon. Treasurer), Len Nolan (Hon. Assistant Secretary), Neville West (Hon. Auditor), Pip Mitchell, John Westcott, Chris Towler and Roy Cole. The first Club race took place on the river on 29th April 1956 and was started from the stern of Lisboa, some three months before her official opening. The Club’s first steward, Bert Williams, lived on the houseboat alongside, called Kulali, from which he was able to keep a watchful eye on the Club premises. At that time the Club was exclusively a dinghy and open day-boat club sailing a variety of classes including the Firefly, Albacore, Enterprise,

Flying Fifteen, Island OD, Sprog, etc. However, it was not long before a few members acquired small cruisers so, in 1958, a number of swinging moorings, secured with chain and sinkers, were laid on the foreshore between Lisboa and the then actively used Ferry Steps, with access by rowing tender from the shore. Over the first few years the membership grew rapidly, whilst Lisboa started to show her age and progressively broke her back. At that time, the gents changing room, in the stern of the boat, would flood at high spring tides, making life aboard nearly as wet as afloat! Plans for a new clubhouse were approved and the test piles for the existing clubhouse were driven in September 1961. The building was completed, at a cost of ÂŁ12,600, and officially opened at a grand ceremony by His Grace the Duke of Norfolk on 22nd September 1962, accompanied by his daughters, Lady Anne and Lady Mary.

CLUB HISTORY

CONTINUED

Once the new clubhouse was in operation, Lisboa was towed out to sea on Guy Fawkes Night and given a Viking’s funeral, spectacularly assisted by a tank full of aviation fuel that had been resting in the bilges! By the early 1970s the growing number of cruiser members were getting tired of rowing out to their boats and the annual chore of digging up and renewing their mooring chains and sinkers, so a scheme for laying pontoon moorings was devised and these were established in 1974.

World Championship for the Enterprise class (1979 and 1984). These events were extremely hard work, but most rewarding, generating great esprit de corps within the membership. Not content with just running dinghy events, in 1984 the Club also hosted the British Open Championship for the First Class 8.

The Club’s first foray into the running of major dinghy championships occurred in 1971 with the hosting of the Albacore National Championship. The championship was a great success and was the forerunner of many more.

The Club continued to prosper and, by the end of the 1970s, the membership was seeking better moorings with extended sailing times than the original pontoon moorings could offer, plus enlargements to the bar and gents changing rooms. Two separate development committees were established; one to bring forward plans to create an excavated basin with walk-ashore marina-style moorings and the other to design the improvements to the clubhouse.

Further dinghy championships followed, with two further Albacore Nationals (1977 and 1990), two Laser Nationals and one National and one

Under Anthony Hewson’s Commodoreship, these ambitious schemes were brought to fruition, with the improved clubhouse being re-opened

at a ceremony on 18th July 1981 attended by Rear Admiral C B Williams CB OBE. These improvements, at a cost of some £130,000, had mainly been funded by loans from the Club’s bank and, whilst all was well initially, by the mid-1980s the Club was finding it increasingly difficult to keep the moorings full and, as a consequence, fell behind with its repayments. A crisis committee was formed whose efforts restored the Club to a sound financial footing. Coincidentally, the Council agreed to revise the Club’s ground lease and to extend it to a term of 125 years.

With its finances back in order, the Club continued to flourish. The moorings were again full and there was an increasing waiting list; the time had arrived to think of further expansion. Once again the Club approached the Council to extend its lease, this time northwards so that it could extend the marina. Plans were prepared and approved and a further area of land secured up to, and including, the Island. However, no sooner had the lease been finalised than the economy took a dip and, mindful of its past difficulties, the Club put its expansion plans on hold.

In November 1988, the Club elected Wendy Eve as its first lady Commodore.

DINGHY RACING Dinghy racing at Arun Yacht Club offers something for every level of competitor in a wide variety of boats.

the harbour arms to the open sea. The safety boats will provide a short tow out to sea in light winds.

There is a mix of fast and slow handicap dinghies—all monohulls. Racing takes place most weekends during the summer, usually on the sea. In the winter, racing is every fortnight on the river.

Racing at sea is run from the Club’s committee boat, ensuring a good beat whatever the wind direction. The Club runs PY racing for all comers. While a good number of classes are represented at the Club, the twoman RS400 and one-man Laser are the most popular designs.

AYC is a sea-sailing club with the fallback of river sailing if conditions at sea are unsuitable. There is a busy year-round programme of dinghy racing: sea sailing from Easter to Christmas, with river sailing from Christmas to Easter. Based inside Littlehampton harbour, launching from the secure dinghy compound is over a firm sandy beach adjacent to the dinghy pen into the river Arun, and from there it is a short sail through

10 | www.arunyc.co.uk

In the river, the race start line is a moving transit from the clubhouse balcony and “pole” position can be hotly contested. Wherever the racing is held there is always excellent safety boat cover from the Club’s fleet of RIBs and launches.

There are many Club trophies to be won, usually over a series of related races. As well as series racing, there are also “one-off events like the upriver race, where the dinghies race to the Black Rabbit pub at Arundel for lunch, then race back again. Participants invariably feel they sail better on the return leg! There is a strong emphasis on support for cadets, which includes a dedicated summer cadet regatta.

The Club has been involved in top-flight dinghy racing since its inception more than 50 years ago, and aims to host at least one major open meeting or national championship event every year. As well as dinghy sailing, the Club also has an active cruiser racing fleet, and many of the dinghy sailors enjoy the opportunity to crew the cruiser-racers. All racing at the club is fiercely competitive, but no matter how hot the action on the water, good humour always prevails in the Club bar after the boats are packed away.

CRUISING Arun Yacht Club is home to a wide variety of bilge keelers and lifting-keel cruisers, many of which participate regularly in club activities. Some support the active cruising programme, organised by the Cruising Secretary, who is always happy to advise first-time cruiser skippers. Many of our cruisers cross the English Channel to explore the French coast and the Channel Islands, with some venturing even further. Other boats focus on the cruiser racing programme, encouraged by the Cruiser Racing Captain. A wide variety of handicapped passage and round-the-marks races are available, including day-long club classics such as the Owers Race and Greenwich Trophy Race. Our racing teams also compete in races organized by other local clubs and travel en masse to complete the Round The Island race. Visiting cruisers are always welcome at the AYC, so if you’re planning a trip to the South Coast mark us on your chart. The cruisers from Arun have been seen in all parts of the globe but most keep to the English Channel with its vast variety of ports in Northern France and Brittany and the South Coast of Britain, the Channel Islands and the Isles of Scilly. Many go off on their own for several months at a time whilst the rest either sail to France or the Solent at weekends; with

Fecamp being only 73Nm away this makes France a real possibility. One of the interesting things about berthing your boat at the Arun is that, with few exceptions, you have to have either a bilge keeler or lifting keel; this means our members can be often be found up small creeks and in shallow waters where the big boys fear to venture. So whether it is a rally to the Solent or exploring further afield our members have some truly wonderful experiences. Michael Marston, his wife Wendy and their dog Jasper successfully cruised around Britain and the Orkneys in 2011. Two more Arun members, John and Sue Bewsey, undertook a cruise in Peggy, their Jeanneau 32, to one of their favourite spots, the Isles of Scilly. Links to logs and fascinating photographs from both these voyages can be found on our website, www.arunyc.co.uk Reading details of their escapades may well inspire you to do something similar. We also enjoy Club cruises as a group and occasionally hold seamanship sessions to broaden the knowledge of our less experienced sailors who have been gripped by the cruising bug and are considering a voyage of adventure of their own.

www.arunyc.co.uk | 13

CRUISER RACING The AYC has a fine tradition in cruiser racing, with a dozen or so boats making up the cruiser fleet. The Club has moorings for approximately 100 bilge keelers/lifting keels with all the usual pontoon facilities as well as an excellent bar and galley nearby in the Clubhouse.

Club racing generally contains a mixture of shorter round-the-cans races and longer passage races. Races are keenly contested but there is always advice being offered to new racers and to more experienced racers who may not know the hazards outside Littlehampton.

The Club hosts a busy calendar of club races with gaps to take in racing events up and down the coast, such as the Escape Race, the Round the Island Race and the Sussex Combined Yacht Clubs Regatta. The Club prides itself on success at such events, which comes from sharing knowledge and team spirit.

We welcome racers of all levels and experience, as well as individuals who’d like to get to know racing by volunteering to crew. If you’d like a taste of cruiser racing, AYC is the place for you!

BERTHING Arun Yacht Club has probably some of the cheapest fully-serviced Pontoon Berths on the south coast of England.

of mooring and membership fees and the berthing application form are available on the club’s website, www.arunyc.co.uk

We have a variety of drying pontoon berths suitable for sailing yachts up to 32’ (large yachts may be considered on a case-by-case basis). The berths are ideally suited to bilge keeled yachts but swing/retracting keel yachts can also be accommodated.

The Arun Yacht Club is just 10 minutes from the sea and 4 hours’ sailing time from the Solent. We are also an ideal starting point for cruises to the east or south, with many of our regular sailors making passages to Normandy, Brittany, and the Channel Islands. We have a clubhouse with a bar and restaurant and there are organised club races and cruises during the summer months. Explore our website to find out more about our facilities.

Our pontoons are located behind security gates and have water and electricity supplies. The berths are generally accessible three hours either side of high tide and we have a pontoon available for boats waiting to access their mooring. (Note: Access to the River Arun is similarly restricted to HT+/-3h by a bar at the river entrance.)

If you’re interested, please feel free to drop in and find out more; a club officer is usually available most lunchtimes during the week and all day at weekends. Or call the Office on 01903 716016 for more information.

Berth holders are required to become full members of the club. Details

TRAINING CENTRE The AYC is a Royal Yachting Association-recognised training centre and offers a variety of RYA powerboat, sailing and shore-based training courses. We also offer specialised non-RYA courses that draw upon the considerable dinghy and cruiser racing expertise of our longer-serving members. Courses are selected to support the Club’s sailing activities and to satisfy our objective to promote sailing to cadet and adult beginners and to develop racing expertise. We also provide a number of courses that are orientated towards our cruising members, courses providing support in terms of navigation, seamanship, and specialised knowledge.

The bottom line? There is a course for everyone, and where better to learn than in the relaxed, supportive environment of the AYC! Details of the range of courses we offer can be found on the following pages. For details of specific dates and the current course programme, please visit the Training Programme page on our website, www.arunyc.co.uk Additional or repeat courses will be added if there is a demand and space within the programme, so please do register your interest, even if you have just missed the course of interest. RYA SAILING COURSES We offer the whole range of RYA Dinghy Sailing Courses for both youths and adults, following the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme and for adults the RYA National Sailing Scheme. We have a number of club boats that are used for training which include Toppers, Wayfarers, Lasers, RS Fevas, RS Vagos and 420s. Many of our students have gone on to compete in National and International championships (including the Olympics) and some have also continued into a career in the sailing and marine industry. Once they are competent, students are encouraged to continue their sailing by taking part in club racing or on our Thursday evening practice and general sailing evenings. During the winter evenings, when it gets too dark to see on the water, we hold various shore-based sailing and seamanship theory sessions for our members.

26 | www.arunyc.co.uk

Adults Tuesday evenings are dedicated to adult training and are broken up into six-week blocks. In each block it is hoped that the student will complete either one of the three beginner’s levels or one of the improver’s and advanced courses. There are four modules to the more advanced courses, titled Seamanship Skills, Day Sailing, Sailing with Spinnakers and Performance Sailing. Full details of the areas covered by each of these courses can be found by visiting the RYA website, www.rya.org.uk. Youths Saturdays are reserved for Youth and Cadet training and, like the adults, are also split up into six-week blocks. We also hold two dedicated weeks during the year for Cadet Training - there is one in the Spring Half Term

CADETS Arun Yacht Club is proud of its record of introducing young people into our sport. Our Cadet section is thriving and we expect this group of enthusiastic and promising sailors to go from strength to strength with the anticipated surge in interest which is sure to come from welcoming the Olympic Games to these shores for the first time since 1948. The Cadets enjoy an active programme throughout the year which is aimed at inspiring their interest, beginning with teaching the basics and progressing through a structured programme to enable them to improve to a level where they can feel comfortable and at ease enjoying sailing either in a competitive or social environment.

Sessions held on Saturday mornings have proved incredibly popular, as have the Cadets Weeks we hold throughout the year. The club held its first Cadet Regatta in 2011 and the event was such a success it is expected to become an annual occurrence. One of the cadet-inspired highlights of the year is the Duck Race, where hundreds of plastic ducks are released on to the River Arun. Organised by the Cadet Committee, it is a fun event and terrific spectacle which raises money for club funds. Barbecues, cream teas and an eagerly-awaited get-together at Christmas, known as Cadetmas, all form part of the busy social calendar.

The emphasis is on fun and the aim is to give our young sailors an enjoyable and fun experience in a safe environment both on and off the water.

CLUBHOUSE The Arun Yacht Club has a great clubhouse overlooking the River Arun and Littlehampton from the west bank. With unrivalled views of Littlehampton Harbour it is a great place for our members to sit and watch the world go by whist enjoying great food from our chef Tracey and reasonably-priced drinks from the bar looked over by our Club Steward Tony Peterson.

Becoming a member of our club means that you will have can benefit from the great catering available on Friday and Saturday evenings and Saturday and Sunday lunches as well as all the other social functions that are held throughout the year. Our chef changes the evening and lunch menus every two or three weeks but to whet your appetite here is an example of a typical Sunday lunch menu:

We have received glowing compliments for our hospitality from visiting yachtsmen, yachtswomen and club rallies, so why not make us a destination in your sailing calendar.

There is also a light snack menu available for those who don’t want a large meal and specials each weekend. Light snacks are available from the bar at lunchtimes when the galley is closed. The club is closed on December 25.

We are also a great place for holding your party or wedding reception. Please get in touch with Sue Jenkins in our office if you would like more details.

RALLIES & VISITORS Arun Yacht Club is proving increasingly popular as a destination for rallies by visiting yacht clubs. You can find us on the western bank of the River Arun where it meets the sea at Littlehampton Harbour. Unfortunately we do not have any visitor berths although we may have a few berths available when members are away. However, the Harbour Board maintains a visitor’s pontoon immediately opposite our club and this can accommodate a considerable number of yachts especially if rafted out. Some visiting clubs have managed to berth 25 boats on this pontoon. Members of rallies and visitors using the Harbour Board’s moorings can either visit the club via a quite long walk up the river to the footbridge and back down the west bank to the club or we may be able to arrange

a ferry across the river. West Beach is a great place for swimming, walking and is a good picnic spot in summer whilst the historic town and castle at Arundel, and even further upstream, can be visited by yacht tender and a following tide. Our clubhouse has a good restaurant and well-stocked bar. The galley is open Friday and Saturday evenings as well as lunchtimes on Sundays, although other days can be arranged given reasonable notice. The bar is open every lunchtime except Mondays, and is also open on Friday and Saturday evenings. The bar may be open other evenings during the summer, so please check the latest opening times. HOW TO FIND US Arun Yacht Club is situated on the west bank of the River Arun in Littlehampton, West Sussex. If you are using Sat Nav our postcode is BN17 5DL. If you see water coming up over the wheelarches you’ve gone too far! By Road We are on the opposite side to the town of Littlehampton. Access is via Ferry Road, which is a turning south of the A259 Bognor Road approximately half a mile to the west of the bridge over the River Arun (signposted to Rope Walk, West Beach, Littlehampton Marina, and Arun Yacht Club). Proceed along Ferry Road until almost the end and take the

turning right into Rope Walk. Proceed to the end of Rope Walk and go through the narrow entrance, passing alongside the golf course and up a ramp where the Club and its car park will be found immediately on your left-hand side. By Rail Littlehampton is lucky to have a terminus station and has direct services from London Victoria and all stations on the south coast mainline. On exiting the station, if you don’t mind a stiff walk, turn right and then cross the footbridge by the Arun View Pub. Once over the footbridge turn left into Rope Walk and at the end of this short road follow the left-hand footpath which will lead you to the club.
