Welcome
Established in 1922, Astbury Golf Club is a picturesque yet testing parkland course situated in the beautiful South Cheshire countryside. The course is easy to walk, comprises sweeping tree-lined fairways, and also runs alongside the historic Macclesfield canal.
In 2013 we invested heavily in improving the course and ensuring that we can consistently keep it in its best possible condition. Everyone who plays the course has been delighted with the results.
Beyond the course itself, Astbury Golf Club prides itself on an inclusive, friendly, atmosphere and warmly welcomes new members, visitors and golf societies, whilst our busy competition and social calendars ensure that our members get the most out of their time with the club.

Club History
In April 1922 three young men came across an old bag of golf clubs in the Town Clerk’s office in Chapel Street, Congleton. After concluding their business, the three men amused themselves by hitting golf balls in a field in Howey Hill Lane and before long the idea of forming a Golf Club was born. The club was named Astbury Golf Club with a membership of 64 and S J Forster was elected as Captain.
6
www.astburygolfclub.com
By February of 1924 £200 had been raised to purchase a new clubhouse which was opened in June of that year. The original clubhouse burned down in June 1965 and by September the club had purchased 38 acres of land on Peel Lane which included a barn. The new clubhouse was located on the north side of Peel Lane and this is where it remains to this day.
In October of 1972 the club celebrated its Golden jubilee, which coincided with its extension to an 18-hole course and the Club’s contribution to the 700th anniversary of the granting of a Charter to Congleton Borough.
In the late 1990s the club saw the emergence of a talented young golfer, Andrew Sandywell, who rose from the junior section to become a professional golfer. From ’97 to ’99, Andrew became the first Astbury player to play on the European Tour. In 2002 the club produced another golfing star in Mark Pilling who won the British Boys Championship at Carnoustie, probably the biggest prize in junior golf.
We now have an exciting new crop of junior golfers emerging at Astbury and we look forward to seeing how they progress as time passes and how they will write themselves into our rich history.
Today, the Club has nearly 800 members (73% men, 19% women, 8% juniors), making it the largest sports club in the Congleton area.

About the course
The course at Astbury is a great test for golfers of all levels and whilst the undulations on the course would by no means categorise it as hilly, they certainly offer some tricky obstacles. Manage your round well, particularly on the back nine, and you will be well placed to card a good score on our parkland course.
The major focus for our ground staff is to make sure the course remains in pristine condition all year round but there is an additional emphasis on ensuring that the course is a nice place to be at all times.
Rather than man-made challenges, there are a number of natural obstacles stretched across the course which will test your golfing abilities to their fullest. Mature trees and sloping banks are features that appear regularly whilst a canal also runs through the heart of the course.

Hole-by-hole guide
Hole 1 – 286 yards, Par 4 (Ladies 267 yards, Par 4) We ease you into our course with this short par 4, with a slight dog-leg. Two bunkers just short of the green are the main danger and will punish any tee shot that tries to over-hit them. A solid drive will leave a short iron to the green, whilst longer hitters may be tempted to take on the bunkers and hit the green in one.
10 www.astburygolfclub.com
Hole 2 – 353 yards, Par 4 (Ladies 294 yards, Par 4) Accuracy off the tee is the key on this tricky par 4 and aiming for the left of the fairway is advised to give you the best view of the green. The long hitters may find a lesser club will pay dividends on this hole as there is a dog-leg right after 240 yards. The second shot usually requires a mid to long iron to find the green but beware of the out of bounds area to the left of the putting surface.
Hole 3 – 480 yards, Par 5 (Ladies 427 yards, Par 5) The first par 5 on the course, this hole proves to be very “risk and reward” in terms of scoring under par. A long drive will stand you in good stead but a series of ponds and a gulley, known as Jones’s Creek, will force you to make a tough decision; either set up short with your second shot and try to carry the, roughly, 180 yards that comprise the gulley with your third attempt or risk it and try to clear the gulley on your second shot. Either way keeping to the left is advised to give you the best view of the green.
Full Course Map
Hole 4 – 173 yards, Par 3 (Ladies 135 yards, Par 3) This may look like a simple par 3, with bunkers that will only come into play if you were to severely slice or hook your tee shot, but a par here is no mean feat. This green slopes from back to front and there are a group of hedges which make up the out of bounds area beyond the green.
Hole 5 – 413 yards, Par 4 (Ladies 391 yards, Par 5) This long par 4 plays longer than its yardage as the last 80- yards see the fairway take a steep climb. An alternative tee, closer to the canal, requires a fade to keep away from the lake. It is wise to make a mark of the pin position as for the first two, or even three, shots the tee will be unsighted. The lake comes into play around the 200 yard mark. There is a bunker to the left of the green which can punish those who are inaccurate on their approach.
Hole 6 – 405 yards, Par 4 (Ladies 341 yards, Par4) The perfect tee shot is one that is aimed between the second fairway bunker, on the right, and the electricity pole on the left of the fairway. The raised front of the green is a deceptive defence to any golfers who under-hit their second shot.
www.astburygolfclub.com 11
Hole-by-hole guide (continued)
Hole 7 – 165 yards, Par 3 (Ladies 156 yards, Par 3) The front of the green is not visible on this tricky par 3 and an under-hit shot will leave you a tough second and struggling to make par. The green is one of the larger ones on the course and has a slight slope from front to back.
12 www.astburygolfclub.com
Hole 8 – 531 yards, Par 5 (Ladies 423 yards, Par 5) This is the longest hole of the course and requires three good shots to reach the green. The best course of action from the tee is to aim towards the water tower which will keep you right of the tree that appears to be in the middle of the fairway. Just short of the green is a pond which will take hold of any balls that are hit too far to the right. A small green means an accurate approach is needed.
Hole 9 – 404 yards, Par 4 (Ladies 346 yards, Par 4) A deceptively tricky hole finishes your run on the front nine. The crucial shot here is the tee shot which must be placed between the two trees which lie on the fairway in order to have a clear shot to the green. It is advised to keep short with your approach to the green as any over-hitting will land you deep in trouble.
Hole 10 – 374 yards, Par 4 (Ladies 314 yards, Par 4) The first challenge of the back nine comes almost immediately on this dog-leg par 4. The dog-leg left is lined with an out of bounds area on the inside meaning that aiming for the right of the fairway is the best course of action. Your approach shot will tend to move from right to left along with the natural slope of the hole.
Hole 11 – 167 yards, Par 3 (Ladies 119 yards, Par 3) This hole tends to play slightly longer than it appears due to the plateau which blocks any shots that try to roll up to the green. There are bunkers that surround the green so it is essential to hit the putting surface in one for any chance of birdying the hole.
Hole 12 – 481 yards, Par 5 (Ladies 304 yards, Par 4) This is the last par 5 of the course and what is widely considered to be the signature hole at Astbury Golf Club. This hole is most daunting from the men’s tee which needs a 150 yard carry over a deeply wooded ravine in order to reach the fairway. With two cavernous bunkers lying 100 yards short of the green the nerve of the players are tested in deciding whether to brave the long shot or lay up short and pitch over the sand traps. A pat on the back is required if you make it past this hole in par or under.
www.astburygolfclub.com 13
Hole-by-hole guide (continued)
Hole 13 – 302 yards, Par 4 (Ladies 289 yards, Par 4) This is a relatively short hole but requires a good tee shot to the right of the fairway to avoid the hollow in the centre. The approach is usually hidden but requires a short iron. The small green is protected by a pot bunker to the left and a longer bunker on the right. The main danger on this hole is the out of bounds canal on the left.
14 www.astburygolfclub.com
Hole 14 – 349 yards, Par 4(Ladies 321 yards, Par 4) The tee shot is vitally important on this less than simple par 4. Two large trees come into play at around the 250 yard mark and positioning becomes key. Poor positioning will see you struggle to reach the green in two and severely damage your score.
Hole 15 – 188 yards, Par 3 (Ladies 164 yards, Par 3) The final four holes can either see you end on a reasonable score or undo all the hard work you have done up to this point. This is a long par 3 to a sloping green which is protected on the left by a large bunker. With it often being shot into the wind there is nothing more satisfying that seeing your ball land on the green.
Hole 16 – 372 yards, Par 4 (Ladies 301 yards, Par 4) A straight drive can leave a mid-range iron to the well protected green. The two trees on the fairway are the main obstacles but the big hitters may also want to watch out for the large pond on the right hand side.
Hole 17 – 436 yards, Par 4 (Ladies 424 yards, Par 5) This is a testing hole and it is crucial that your tee shot lands on the fairway to give you any chance of reaching the green in regulation. The main danger on this hole is the pond that lies on the right at around the 200 yard mark.
Hole 18 - 372 yards, Par 4 (Ladies 359 yards, Par 5) Luckily we haven’t saved the hardest for last on your route in to the clubhouse. This dog-leg left, par 4, requires a strong tee shot. The green is protected by trees and there is a noticeable ridge along the front of the green. Now go and reward yourself with a pint in the clubhouse!

Practice Facilities
Astbury Golf Club has an impressive practice area, comprising more than 13 acres of ground which was previously part of the main course. The area is split into two sections, one focused on full shots and the other on short game. Both areas include target greens, which were shaped when they were part of the main course.
The short game area includes several practice bunkers, a marked out series of five short “pitch and putt holes and two areas marked with target flags at 50, 75 and 100 yards. The practice area is ideal for learners to develop their skills before they have reached a sufficient standard to progress onto the main course.

VISION.TAKEN SERIOUSLY.
Getting Started
The Club provides a range of options for those wanting to take up golf. Joining the excellent Junior Academy is an ideal way for 4-15 year olds to get started. However, all age groups are catered for. The reasonably priced starter package is an ideal way to combine a course of lessons with the facility to put in the necessary hours improving on the practice ground and its pitch and putt style holes, with the bonus of being able to play 6 full rounds on the main course when you have reached the necessary level.
The Club prides itself on being friendly and inclusive, and to assist new member integration several times per week are allocated for roll-up events where members can register for a game with randomly drawn colleagues without prior booking. These provide an excellent way of rapidly getting to know people at the Club. Alternatively, on-line booking is available for all competitions which allows new members to put their names down for available slots to join three-ball groups.
