Welcome to brixham yacht Club Firstly let me say how pleased I am that you have picked this brochure up and welcome to Brixham Yacht Club. Our club is a vibrant place to be with numerous sailing and socialevents throughout the year. Let’s start with sailing and a typical year. Crane in for the larger boats is usually early April; from then on there are races most Thursday nights and Sunday mornings, with occasional Regattas. In 2012, our 75th anniversary year, we are host to eight visiting championships and are always willing to discuss hosting further championships. In August we are part of Torbay Week when the Bay becomes full of boats, which is a wonderful sight. We also have a cruising section that organises sailing cruises to various destinations on the south coast. There is also a very active Junior Sailing Club based here that meets on Monday and Tuesday evenings. The fully-qualified instructors introduce

youngsters to the joys of sailing via the RYA-approved training schemes. Our social side is also very active. The bar is open every midday of the week and every evening except Sunday, serving food and drinks everyday during the year. We hold a number of special dining evenings during the year including St George’s Night and of course Trafalgar Night, due to Napoleon’s visit here. These evenings are always well attended. The members of staff are always helpful and eager to please and welcome everyone who comes through our doors. I hope that this snapshot of our club will encourage you to visit either to sail or just for a drink so that you can enjoy the superb facilities and views from our clubhouse. Adrian Morrall, Commodore

07 History of Brixham Yacht Club July 1937 Brixham Yacht Club was formed. 6th June 1938 Opening of the new premises of Brixham Yacht Club. 9th June 1939 The clubhouse as it is now, was purchased on this date; the building was previously a sail loft. 2nd August 1948 Opening ceremony of the XIVth Olympiad Yachting Events held in Torbay. 11th October 1952 Seaward car park gifted to the Club by Thomas Wilton CBE. 30th July 1964 Lower car park conveyed to the Club. 1994 Brixham Yacht Club hosted the Tasar World Championships. 2003 “Round Alone world yacht race hosted by the Club. 2010 Club grounds extended as part of new Brixham fish market. 2011 Formal trust deed prepared and signed. All property was put in the name of three trustees for the benefit of the Club. 2012 Club celebrates its 75th anniversary.

Clubhouse Information The upper part of the clubhouse contains the main bar and separate restaurant known as the “Jubilee” room. This provides a most welcoming venue for socialising, full width windows facing the waterside, and arguably the best views in Torbay. Our chefs provide excellent lunches and evening meals throughout the week (except Sunday evenings), whilst the bar always stocks real ale and a comprehensive selection of competitively priced wines and spirits. Tables can be booked either within the main bar or the Jubilee room. The latter provides private dining if you prefer for up to 40 people, and is often booked for functions ranging from weddings to birthday parties. The main bar can seat up to 100, which is often the case on Club dining evenings, of which there are on average two a month throughout the year. The social aspects of the Club are highly regarded, with ladies’

weekday lunches, quizzes, charity poker nights, talks and tasting evenings going on throughout both summer and winter. We are fortunate in having on-site car parking in three separate areas. Having such local car parking is very unusual in crowded Brixham, and proves very popular, especially on race nights. One of the smaller compounds can be completely covered over, and is the popular venue for summer barbecues since it is right by the water and landing steps meaning you can get food and drink without climbing the steps up to the clubhouse! The large compound can take the biggest marquee, which can be erected for large events, including Torbay Week and Michelmores Regatta. Here we can cater for up to 400 guests with food and music after a day’s hard sailing.
