History
B
urton On Trent Golf Club has a long and storied history dating back to the establishment of the club in 1894. First established in the Stapenhill area of Burton On Trent as a 9 hole course and then in 1897 moving over the river Trent to Branston between the railway line and the site of what would later be the Branston Factory. In 1907 after a steady increase in membership and a failed attempt to expand to 18 holes, Burton On Trent Golf Club moved back across the Trent to Bretby, on Ashby Road East, which was at that time Lord Canarvon’s Estate to where it stands today.
Burton-On-Trent Golf Club
The decision was made easier by fact that he newly laid Burton & Ashby Light Railway ran past, thus opening up easy access for members linking up to Burton Railway Station. During the early years of the club, Burton On Trent Golf Club established a fine reputation among the local community and golfers in the region. This is still ongoing today. The Club had a renowned Golf Professional and Greenkeeper, appointed in 1904, who followed the Club in the move from Branston, Mr Vivian Richards, who also had
a reputation as a club maker of distinction. This was the beginning of a relationship with the Richards family that would last for almost 70 years as his son Tom took over in 1952, retiring in 1973. The Bretby Clubhouse and original course was designed and built by a local architect and member, Mr Henry Beck. The Clubhouse was mortgaged for £400 in 1907. The original plot of land for the course was approximately 80 acres, leased for 99 years for a rental of £5 per annum.
www.botgc.co.uk | 7
The Club has a great tradition of competitive golf with many trophies some dating back before the move to Bretby. The first Trophy played for at the new Bretby course was that presented by Lord Carnarvon, originally known as the “Presidents Cup” (as he was the first President and lasted 21years until his sudden death in Egypt) and now known as the “Carnarvon Cup”.
There has always been a thriving Ladies Section since the clubs inaugural meeting in 1894, when there was a decision (unprecedented at that time) that ladies should be included to play golf. A great debt of gratitude and appreciation is owed and given to the ladies when they helped the club survive through the war years of 1914 -18 and 1939-45.
In 1911 the Scratch Medal Competition was introduced (later known as the Club Championship) which was initially played twice a year. The first winner was Mr R B Rickman with a score of 84 (he was also the first winner of the Carnarvon Cup in 1907).
At the AGM of the Ladies Section held in the clubhouse on 2nd February 1912 there was an attendance of 15, one of whom was Miss Phyliss Evershed, who was destined to become one of the outstanding personalities in golf for
40 years both local and county (in 1922 made County Secretary (until 1952) and Treasurer (until 1968). She was the daughter of Mr Sydney Evershed, MP, a well-known Burton brewer and sister of Sir Sydney Herbert Evershed, who served as Burton Captain in 1910-11, 1916-18 and County Captain 1891-98. By 1913 there was a strong feeling amongst the membership for a course re-design. The great course architect, Mr H S Colt was commissioned. The work took two years to complete improving the course in many areas and allowing us to join the Colt Association as an established Colt designed course.

History In 1922 the course was expanded with the purchase of Oldicote Farm and in the same year the freehold was purchased from the Earl of Carnarvon when his Bretby estate was sold and Burton On Trent Golf Club was established as a Limited company. During the 1920’s and 30’s golf continued to grow in popularity. In 1930 the club had a men’s membership of 264 and a ladies’ membership of 158, 9 life members, 27 country members and 9 honorary members. A broad cross section of members which again is till
the case today although membership numbers have increased considerably.
John Lower in 1992, now in his 27th year at the Club.
In 1952, the club professional, Mr Vivian Richards retired to be succeeded for a short time by Stanley Turner only to be succeeded within a year by Tom Richards, the son of Vivian Richards. Tom was club professional until 1973 and then John Lower until 1991. In fact the Club is proud of the fact that in 125 years of existence it has only had 6 professionals, with Gary Stafford the current professional, taking over from
Today Burton On Trent Golf Club enjoys a reputation as a welcoming, friendly golf club that is very much part of the local community as well as being held in high regard in Derbyshire, Staffordshire and the West Midlands.

About the Course
E
stablished by H.Beck in 1907 and re-designed by H S Colt in 1913, originally known as “Bretby Links”, but now, due to the programme of planting thousands of trees in the 1980’s as a parkland course, it makes the most of the natural contours of South Derbyshire leading to a great test of golf with the recognisable H S Colt bunkers. At 6510 yards, with a par of 71, visitors could be forgiven for expecting an easy run on the course, however, this is far from the case.
Each hole provides its own challenge, with very subtle fairways and subtle borrows on the beautifully manicured greens adding to this demanding yet delightful test of golf. For a good round golfers have to plot their way around the course from fairway to green as being in the correct place is key. The course contains four par threes, all of which demand accurate shots making it a tricky par-71 parkland course, while the signature hole throughout the 18 is undoubtedly the par four 18th which
is not only a beautiful hole but also demands great accuracy to avoid a slip up. Although a parkland course that is well tree lined the weather, and in particular, the wind adds to the challenge. For more information on the course’s condition and availability please call 01283 544 551 Option 2

Course Tour
I
f you have never played at Burton On Trent Golf Club before you are in for a pleasant surprise. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour. 1st Hole 350 Yards Par 4: A friendly opening hole played slightly uphill. A tee shot aimed at or slightly right of the marker post leaves the best line for the 2nd shot into green that slopes very much back to front. Leave yourself a downhill putt - beware!!! 2nd Hole 142 Yards Par 3: The first and shortest of the four par 3s on the golf course. An accurate
Burton-On-Trent Golf Club
tee shot with a short / medium iron played into a well-guarded and protected green. The green tilts from right to left. The chance for a 3 maybe even a 2. 3rd Hole 558 Yards Par 5: The longest hole on the course, the hole shapes in a dogleg left all the way to the green, however the fairway tilts from left to right which can make hitting the fairway difficult. With favourable conditions it can be reached with 2 mighty blows but more realistically it takes 3 shot to get to this relatively flat green Make a 5 and walk off to the 4th Tee happy. A great par 5.
4th Hole 484 Yards Par 5: Another Par 5 off the White pots (par 4 off the Yellow pots). Two good straight hits and the green can be in range. However, probably the tightest driving hole on the course with its tree lined fairway. The fairway tilts from right to left all the way down the green. The green is protected by bunkers left and right and like the 3rd green the 4th green is relatively flat but with subtle borrows. Hit the ball offline and instead of a 4 or 5 it is easy to run up a 6 or more!!! 5th Hole 447 Yards Par 4: A wonderful long par 4 which will require 2 good shots to reach the
www.botgc.co.uk | 13
green. A tee shot landing on the left half of the fairway is the ideal line as the fairway tilts very gently from left to right. A penalty area (ditch) 305 yards off the tee awaits the longest of drives. A medium/long straight 2nd shot gives you the opportunity to reach this undulating green. 2 putts you may score 4. A 5 is not a disaster!!! 6th Hole 164 Yards Par 3: A beautiful par 3 set in an amphitheatre of trees. A large green protected by bunkers right and left awaits a well hit tee shot, however, take plenty of club as the hole is played uphill and plays all its yardage. The green slopes from back to front.
7th Hole 381 Yards Par 4: The tee shot is played from an avenue of trees where a generous fairway that slopes from left to right waits. Longer hitters will only require a fairway wood or long iron off the tee as the fairway narrows at around 250 yards. The left half of the fairway is the ideal line which will leave a short to medium club to a well-protected green. 8th Hole 349 Yards Par 4: A fantastic medium length par 4 demands a straight or left to right flighted tee shot. Trouble right (trees) and left (penalty area – a ditch) off the tee. There is also a penalty area that
runs across the hole at 280 yards from the tee. A short to medium club to the green that slopes from right to left. A beautiful hole when hitting straight shots but disaster awaits errant shots!!! 9th Hole 374 Yards Par 4: Aim at the clubhouse for the best line off the tee. A good tee shot is required to hit this fairway that slopes from right to left. An awkward lie waits the 2nd shot into a relatively flat green a bunker right and a drop off left provides protection to the green.

Course Tour The clubhouse and wonderful refreshments wait if you only wish to play 9 holes. However, if you are continuing your round you are now entering Burtons Amen Corner, holes 10, 11 and 12. 10th Hole 196 Yards Par 3: A very well hit straight shot will be required to reach this uphill two tiered green. Four bunkers surround the green. Hitting the green can be demanding but hitting the ball onto the correct tier makes 2 putting easier. A score of 3 on this hole anytime is a good score. 11th Hole 313 Yards Par 4: The rose between two thorns but do
not be deceived by this short par 4. 11 is a great golf hole a sharp dogleg right Two options from the tee 1: Go over the woodland towards the green if you choose this option make sure you hit it well and high trouble waits if you do neither of these 2: Play a 200 yard shot from the tee to the corner which leaves a short shot to a green (this would be my preferred option). Finding the green with the 2nd shot is not necessarily difficult however your problems may just be starting. A large two tiered green that slopes very much from left to right makes even the most proficient players
concentrate on their putting stroke. A good hole to make a 4. Any bad decisions and you will score more. 12th Hole 214 Yards Par 3: The last and the longest par 3 on the course. This hole runs in the same direction as the 10th uphill and plays all its yardage. A well hit straight shot is a must with whatever club you decide to use if you are going to reach this small green. Bunkers short of the green and around the green add to this already demanding par 3 hole.

Course Tour Amen corner completed score 12 shots on the previous 3 holes and you have played well, anything less and you are playing well!! 13th Hole 508 Yards Par 5: A long straight Par 5 with out of bounds all the way down the left hand side and trees down the length of the right hand side of the hole. Reachable in two for the longer hitters, the later part of the hole runs down to the green with the putting surface running in the same direction from front to back. A very difficult green to hole a putt, however, a chance for a 4.
14th Hole 443 Yards Par 4: This is a great golf hole that requires a right to left flighted tee shot. Another tree lined fairway with a bunker on the right and a penalty area on the left hand side of the fairway around 280 yards from the tee adds to the difficulty to this tee shot. An inviting downhill 2nd shot to the incredibly undulating green, a bunker left, and bunker right, adds to the problems. Make a par 4 on this great hole and it can feel like a birdie. 15th Hole 344 Yards Par 4: A short par 4, a 220 - 230 yard tee shot
is ideal, landing on the left half of the fairway as the fairway tilts left to right. This would leave a short or medium club into a partially hidden green, which has a bunker on the right and left hand side. A bunker across the fairway at 300 yards from the tee can catch a very long tee drive. Trust the yardage when playing into the green that slopes from left to right. A real birdie opportunity. 15 holes played and three fantastic holes to play to complete your round. Three pars from here is always good play.

Course Tour 16th Hole 429 Yards Par 4: Another great long hole, a straight hole with a fairway that slopes from right to left and again tree lined. An accurate 2nd shot with a long/medium club is required to hit a green that is only 19 paces deep. A hollow short of the green demands a flighted shot landing on the putting surface, where subtle borrows can cause problems when putting. 17th Hole 439 Yards Par 4: A blind tee shot over a bank, aim at the marker post, trust your swing at this incredible long par 4. The fairway slopes
from left to right. Trees down the left and woodland down the right. A long/ medium 2nd or possibly 3rd shot will need to be accurate to hit the putting surface, with a narrow entrance between front bunkers left and right of the green. Another very difficult green to putt on with its slopes. A 4 is always a great score. 18th Hole 375 Yards Par 4: With the clubhouse in sight this delightful finishing hole takes you home. From an elevated teeing ground, the ideal line is down the right hand side of the hole as the fairway runs
away from you and right to left. A very difficult fairway to find off the tee, missing the fairway can mean playing short of the water in 2 and going over the water in 3. The 2nd or 3rd shot with a short/medium club is played from an awkward lie over a penalty area which is short of the green. Ideally this shot needs to land on the right side of the green, however, missing the green on the right is okay as the slope will take the ball towards the putting surface. The green is set in a basin and invites putts to be holed!!! A short climb from the 18th green to the welcoming clubhouse and patio area for a much deserved drink and refreshments overlooking the last hole.

Tuition
W
hether you’re an accomplished player or simply looking to get into the game, the quickest and easiest way to play better golf and lower your scores is to book a lesson with our PGA Professional. Burton On Trent Golf Club is blessed with a talented Professional who is always on hand to assist and advise. We have several styles of tuition to suit your need from a personal one-to-one lesson to a more relaxed group lesson with other players of a similar standard.
We also offer on-course tuition, where technique and the tactical side to the game can be addressed at the same time. Learning the correct thought process can often be an eye-opening and rewarding experience for the novice player and can lead to better scores.
This is achieved through precise swing analysis followed by clear instruction and easy-to-follow practice drills, which allows us to install solid foundations and good fundamentals, as well as combining the individual’s own natural flair and style.
We understand golf is a ‘Game For Life’, so our lessons are tailor-made to suit the individual, aiming towards improving people’s performance and enjoyment of the game.
To book a lesson contact the Pro Shop by calling 01283 544 551 Option 2.

Custom Fitting
T
here has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess.
This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics.
Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes.
Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at Burton On Trent Golf Club and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of products all available for custom fitting.
The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing.
This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking.
Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise. Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores.
