Welcome Golf in the Heart of the Cotswolds Welcome to Cirencester Golf Club, situated in beautiful Cotswold countryside, just north of the historic town of Cirencester. The Golf Club offers a traditional welcoming atmosphere and a picturesque and interesting course kept in wonderful condition throughout the year. Many of the holes are virtually unchanged from architect James Braid’s original design and offer wonderful views over the surrounding countryside, the course is built on free-draining limestone so remains playable all year round. Whilst retaining its valuable traditions, Cirencester Golf Club is also progressive, with facilities in keeping with any modern day club. The wellstocked shop offers a wide range of the latest clubs, clothing, accessories and trolleys plus a full repair service.
The recently refurbished Clubhouse offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The well-stocked bar has a wide range of local real ales. Quality fresh food is cooked and prepared by the Chef Steve and his team. Before your round you can perfect your swing on the refurbished driving range with the latest top of the range “True Strike” mats or perfect your chipping on our new chipping green and bunker. New in 2018 is the grass practice tee next to the driving range, open from May to October. We do not have pre-booked tee times so members and visitors can turn up and play whenever they wish, subject to pre-booked events and fixtures. For further information please contact the Club Manager Richard Collishaw on 01285 652465 or email info@cirencestergolfclub.co.uk.

The Course The 18 hole parkland course at Cirencester possesses a charm that’s distinctively its own. At 6,030 yards, par 70, the excellent greens are demanding and, with no two holes the same, offer a challenging test of golf for all handicap levels.
Cirencester is playable throughout the year thanks to free draining limestone brash, the course is rarely closed. With our own water supply and irrigation system, we are able to keep the course in top condition throughout even the driest of summers.
The course was originally designed in 1910 by world famous golfer and architect, James Braid, and many of the holes remain unchanged. In 1996, however, three new holes were incorporated into the layout. These offer a challenging finish to the round along with glorious views over the pretty Cotswold village of Baunton.
The Club has a rolling programme to maintain and improve the quality of greens and bunkers. Extensive tree planting has taken place in recent years in order to enhance the landscape whilst keeping the general concept of an Edwardian course. The course is open from 8am throughout the year, and closes at dusk.
For the start of the 2018 playing season we plan to change the 18th hole back to it’s original James Braid design. This will return the hole to a par 4 rather than a par 3 and also add a shot to the card and extend the course to 6270 yards.

Local Wildlife Situated in the heart of the Cotswolds, with gently undulating hills and fantastic views towards the town of Cirencester and the Marlborough Downs beyond, the course is home to an abundance of flora and fauna. Offering magnificent views over the Cotswold stone houses of Baunton, as you play your challenging round, you will notice a beautiful array of trees and hedgerows teeming with wildlife. We are currently working in partnership with the Royal Agricultural University on a research project to protect and encourage rare butterfly habitats around the course. In recent years the members have planted wild flower meadows again to encourage wildlife.
In the spring of 2016 we introduced bee hives for the first time again to encourage the wild flower meadows. We have our own honey for sale in the bar. In 2010, as part of the centenary celebrations the Seniors’ section placed bird nesting boxes around the course and these encouraged the rich variety of birds that you can see during your round. We have several species of deer, the occasional badger, foxes, buzzards, red kites. During the spring and summer months many different and rare butterflies can be spotted. Wild orchids can also be seen during the summer months in the wild grasslands banks of the 4th hole.

Take The Course Tour Hole 1 A gentle par 4 opener. Avoid the bunkers and concentrate on distance control into a three-level sloping green. Hole 2 Club selection is vital as the wind, the two-tier well bunkered green and out of bounds on the right are all to be considered. Hole 3 A demanding drive up and over a left-to-right sloping fairway. An accurate downhill approach gives a chance to pick up a shot.
Hole 4 A signature James Braid hole, with steep banks framing a difficult drive. Favour the left side with your approach into a severe back-to-front sloping green. Hole 5 The shortest of the par 4s. Place your tee shot to avoid a sloping lie before a tricky approach to a narrow green with deep slopes from front to back. Hole 6 A generous par 4. Favour the left side off the tee to allow a short second shot into a long thin green.
www.cirencestergolfclub.co.uk | 11

continued
Hole 7 The tightest driving hole on the course. The second shot requires the ball to be carried over a bunker so choose your club wisely.
Hole 10 Keep your drive close to the right side but avoid any bunkers. Requires accuracy to avoid more bunkers around the green.
Hole 8 Out of bounds on the left but plenty of room on the right. Good distance control will reward your second shot.
Hole 11 Another long par 3 which usually plays the same club as the 9th. Good bunkering surrounds a flat putting surface.
Hole 9 A well-protected par 3 with out of bounds on the left and bunkers on the front right. Missing short leaves a straightforward chip onto a large putting surface.
Hole 12 A long par 5 with out of bounds on the right. Avoid the fairway bunkers with your approach. With a sloping green, chipping from the left or right is a difficult up and down.
www.cirencestergolfclub.co.uk | 13
Take The Course Tour
continued
Hole 13 Check the flag position as you walk down the 12th. A shortish par 3, well bunkered with an undulating green.
Hole 16 A short but dangerous par 4 to an upturned saucer green with the three levels. Stay left off the tee to make the second shot easier.
Hole 14 Your tee shot usually finishes left, following the fairway camber. Out of bounds again up the right hand side, with an uphill second to a green with run off areas.
Hole 17 Favour the left side off the tee to allow safe negotiation of the fairway bunkers with your second shot. A narrow elevated sloping green requires a precise approach.
Hole 15 Avoid the large fairway bunker off the tee and take enough club to attack a sloping green with bunkers on the left.
Hole 18 New for 2018 is the restored par 4, 18th hole. Once described as the best finishing hole in the county. A decent drive is a must to leave a chance of getting on the green with your second. Nice flat green to finish.

The Club’s History Golf has been played in Cirencester since 1893 when ‘an area of old pastures’ belonging to the Earl Bathurst at Park Corner, Sapperton, was laid out as a 12-hole golf course. Because of many problems of upkeep with limited resources and problems of transport out of town, it was decided to look for another venue closer to Cirencester. Eventually, some land was bought and other fields leased in order to establish a golf course on its present site. On 3 March 1909, James Braid visited the site in order to discuss the design. However, because of snow covering the ground he had to make another visit! In laying out the course, Braid used the natural features to advantage and there was little need to do more than build tees, establish greens and put in the fifty or so bunkers. The tees were not particularly
18 | www.cirencestergolfclub.co.uk
large or elevated. Greens were mostly square-shaped and established on ground which was reasonably level, although a considerable bank had to be built up to make a flat area for the 3rd green. Most of the tees have been enlarged in recent years. The course is situated about 2 miles north of Cirencester, on the Cheltenham Road and the topography is varied and described as ‘situated on a rolling plateau, where the eastern slopes of the Cotswold’s die away to the plain’. Part of the course, including the clubhouse, is situated in the parish of Bagendon, but most of it is in the parish of Baunton.
Cirencester Golf Club was opened for play on May 5th 1910, when Braid and Harry Vardon played an exhibition match in the morning and a four ball with local professionals in the afternoon (Braid went on to win the ‘Open’ seven weeks later!)
A detailed history of the club 1893-1993, illustrated with many photographs, was published on 30th October 1993 copies are available from the club.
The course has remained much as Braid designed it, though boundary walls within the course were removed, several bunkers redesigned and new ones recently established to take into account greater distances achieved with modern equipment. In both World Wars much of the course was given up for agricultural purposes and play was limited to a few holes. In the mid-1990s, when a bypass around Cirencester was built, the inevitable land loss meant that the club would have to build three new holes. These were constructed from a Donald Steel design and opened for play in late 1996.

The Clubhouse Bar and Restaurant Cirencester is well served by excellent Clubhouse facilities that superbly complement the beautiful course.
The bar is open daily from 11.00am, serving a fine selection of beer, wine, sprits and fresh coffee.
Phase 2 of the Clubhouse refurbishment completed in mid-2015 has seen the upgrading the first floor area into a function and meeting room and this has proved to be a great asset to the Club.
Real ales are always popular and we have a good range including many from local breweries. The bar overlooks the beautiful putting green. So enjoy peaceful views whilst sipping a pint of local real ale.
Experience the warm and welcoming atmosphere for yourself, and enjoy fresh homemade food, served throughout the day. We have daily specials, a wide range of snacks, sandwiches and, of course, full meals. We have a fresh coffee machine inside the Clubhouse for players wishing to grab a hot drink early in the morning, and you can tuck into a delicious, home cooked meal from the top-class kitchen which is open from 09.30am daily.
The Club can also cater for meetings, events and parties - please contact the office for more details.
22 | www.cirencestergolfclub.co.uk
The Halfway House The Halfway House – constructed in 2011 with funds raised by the members - has hot drinks available every day though you will need a token from the Pro Shop before you play. On busy days it is open with a range of hot snacks and beverages. The Halfway House has probably the nicest on course toilets of any golf course in the country.
Spike-Friendly Bar Facilities at Cirencester have also been enhanced by the addition of the new soft spike bar which is easily accessible at the end of your round. The bar is open through the day and is proving to be a popular additional service since the club refurbishment and is the perfect meeting place after a day on the course or for a quick caffeine fix.

Every club in your bag, from the driver to the putter should be custom fitted to match your size, shape, aspirations, and club head speed. Your chances of hitting straighter shots improve significantly if lie, loft, shaft flex, and grip size are uniquely matched to you.

Visitors Cirencester Golf Club is delighted to welcome visitors - as individuals, with organised groups or through the many Open competitions we hold each year. As there is no tee booking system at Cirencester, visitors can generally get straight onto the first tee without having to wait. The obvious exceptions will be for society bookings, club matches and competitions.
Visitors are treated as a member for the day. In return, we ask that you respect the rules of the Club. Each player should have their own set of golf clubs, proper golf shoes and observe the dress code, both on and off the course. We also like all players to have a reasonable standard of game, and to abide by accepted golfing rules and etiquette. In return we offer a challenging course with spectacular views across t wonderful Cotswold countryside, an excellent driving range, new chipping green and a welcoming Clubhouse with restaurant and bar.

Early in June is the Ladies’ Open Eclectic, which is played over 27 holes with the preferred scores to count.
