EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNTED RATE FOR DEER PARK MEMBERS 15% off estate agency and conveyancing fees

Why choose Aberdein Considine? We can keep our costs low in West Lothian because we cover the area from our Edinburgh branch, however we still have expert knowledge of the area as key staff members in our legal and sales teams live in West Lothian. We also have a small administrative office in Livingston, so we remain a handy option for dropping off documents and signing papers. One huge benefit of using Aberdein Considine, which independent estate agents cannot offer, is exposure in the ESPC. The property market in Edinburgh is very hot at the moment and the surrounding areas are seeing huge benefits with more and more Edinburgh buyers looking to West Lothian in their property search.

WELCOME

E

stablished in 1978, Deer Park Golf & Country Club is one of Scotland’s premier leisure facilities that presents a wide variety of activities for people of all ages to enjoy.

Regarded as one of Scotland’s prime golf and country clubs, Deer Park is perfectly situated at junction three of the M8 between the two largest cities in the country – Glasgow and Edinburgh. The club is home to an 18-hole championship golf course, one of the region’s top wedding venues, a ten pin bowling centre, excellent gym facilities, a relaxing spa and it offers fantastic food, too.

www.deer-park.co.uk

The championship layout at Deer Park Golf & Country Club has a distinguished golfing past having been used as an Open Championship Regional Qualifying venue and played host to the Scottish Under 25’s Championship, won by Paul Lawrie, in 1990. Since then, it has continued to build on that pedigree and has hosted the prestigious Deer Park Masters tournament on the PGA Scottish Tartan Tour since 2004, now the largest attended Pro-Am on the Scottish circuit. The event boasts former European Tour pros Craig Lee and Greig Hutcheon as previous winners.

5

Away from the golf course, the 16-lane ten pin bowling centre provides the perfect place to enjoy some fun with the family, while our members are able to take advantage of our recently upgraded pool, sauna and steam room facilities, alongside our state-of-the-art gym and squash courts. With so much to offer all under one roof, Deer Park Golf & Country Club is an ideal location for a great round of golf, some fun with the family or that special event in your life. The following pages detail everything that we have to offer as a club.

THE COURSE

D

esigned by course architect Dave Thomas alongside legendary golfer and commentator Peter Alliss, Deer Park offers a fantastic test for players of all abilities just minutes from the M8. Regarded as one of the top courses in the region, the front nine at Deer Park is tree-lined throughout with well positioned water hazards and bunkers ensuring you must strategically plot your shots from tee to green. It’s there you’ll find the 8th, which is regarded as the course’s signature hole. A long par-5 that can provide a tough par or a birdie opportunity depending on the direction of the wind.

www.deer-park.co.uk

The most important shot you hit there will be your first. A good tee shot is a necessity to card a good score here and to take any trouble out of the hole. Typically a three shot par-5, you’re doing well to walk off with a five here. It’s a challenge that has ruined many scorecards in the past and no doubt will continue to do so in the future. The back nine, meanwhile, is often said to be the more challenging of the two, with the course rising and falling with its naturally undulating terrain. The most spectacular views of your round can be found at the 14th green where both Edinburgh Castle and Arthur’s Seat are visible on a clear day.

7

If you can keep your score going to that point, you’ve got a great chance of following it through to the clubhouse. The 15th heads back down the hill and a good drive can set you up for a good look at birdie. The par-3 16th and par-4 17th holes give good chances of a par, then it’s all down to your drive at 18. Overall, the course measures 6,727 yards from the back tees but, with five different tee options, the course can be as long or as short as you wish to play. The design also brings the added benefit of two loops of nine holes giving the opportunity to play a quick nine, a full round or even add an extra few holes on to the end of an enjoyable day.

Deer Park Masters

T

he Deer Park Masters is one of the most prestigious events on the PGA Scotland Tartan Tour and it is also one of the biggest, with 50 PGA Professionals and 300 amateurs taking part in the event at the start of every August.

First started in 2004, the event has continued to move from strength to strength throughout its 14 year existence and proves to be a fantastic two days for the PGA pros and the teams of amateurs alike. With former European Tour players Greig Hutcheon, Craig Lee and Paul McKechnie

www.deer-park.co.uk

all boasting their name on the trophy, it is Hutcheon who has been most successful. The Banchory man’s name is linked with Deer Park forever thanks to his five Deer Park Masters victories to date, but it is a round of 63 on his first visit to the club that sees him still boasting the title of course record holder. In 2017, Hutcheon was also awarded honorary life membership of Deer Park in recognition of his achievements. “When I first came to Deer Park to play in the Masters, I had never played the course before and I didn’t even get the chance to play a practice round,” recalls Hutcheon.

9

“I went out on that first day and shot 63. I fell in love with the course early on, although there’s only one way your scores can go after shooting the course record. It’s a good problem to have. It’s a great golf course with a lot of fantastic golf holes. It deserves a whole lot more credit than it sometimes receives.” In 2017, it was not Hutcheon’s year, however. It was in fact Gavin Hay, pictured above, who won the title. Hay, who is based at Grantown-on-Spey Golf Club in the Highlands won a threeman playoff to claim his first ever Order of Merit title on the Tartan Tour.

Deer Park Golf & Country Club

Course Tour

Hole 1 – Par 4 - 333 yards A straightforward start, this gentle opener eases you nicely into the round. The ideal line for your tee shot is down the left side of the fairway, anything heading right brings the dangers of the trees and the bunker into play. End up there and it’ll be a real challenge to save par. A nice easy start to get you warmed up but the potential to find trouble is never far away.

Hole 2 – Par 5 – 513 yards The first of four par 5s at Deer Park. You can see everything in front of you but a wayward tee shot to the right can find you in all sorts of trouble amongst the dense mature trees. The big hitters will be able to reach a well protected green in two, but the majority will need three shots to get there. Accuracy in your approach to the narrow green is essential.

Deer Park Golf & Country Club

10

Hole 3 – Par 3 – 207 yards A beautiful par 3, this hole boasts its fair share of hazards. A well struck shot is needed to reach the green with bunkers dotted around the approach and the winding burn is ever present in the mind of many as they stand over this tee shot. The sloping green from back to front makes a birdie tricky, even if you do find the putting surface from the tee.

www.deer-park.co.uk

Hole 4 – Par 4 – 448 yards Characterised by the burn that winds its way across the hole on two separate occasions, this is a hole where course management is key. A good drive is a must if you’re to have a go at the green in two but also be prepared to take your medicine and lay up with your second shot to avoid sending your ball to a watery grave. Bogey is certainly no disaster here.

Hole 5 – Par 4 – 365 yards An uphill task in many respects, teeing up on the left side gives you a wider view of the fairway. With Out of Bounds on the right, the deceivingly elevated green means you should really take an extra club with your second. A very narrow entrance to the putting surface, the slope on the green ensures you’ll need to take your time with the flat stick.

11

Hole 6 – Par 4 – 429 yards Positioning is a bigger factor than distance when it comes to your tee shot here. A small fade can work wonders on this left to right dogleg and set you up perfectly for an aggressive approach to the green. From the back tees, the higher handicapper may consider laying up to the burn and playing it like a par 5, leaving just a wedge into the green with their third.

Deer Park Golf & Country Club

Course Tour CONTINUED

Hole 7 – Par 3 – 191 yards A demanding par-3 that requires precision from the tee, it looks a lot shorter than the yardage on the scorecard. We can assure you it plays to its full length and is well guarded by two well positioned bunkers. A tricky green that slopes from back to front, finding the middle should never leave you too far from the cup but plenty of time should be taken over those three footers.

Hole 8 – Par 5 – 522 yards Deer Park’s signature hole, the opportunities offered up by this hole depend on two things, the quality of your tee shot and the direction of the wind. If the wind is into your face, the chances of reaching the green in two are slim. Positioning your ball away from the trees is the main challenge from the tee. After that, accuracy takes priority.

Deer Park Golf & Country Club

12

Hole 9 – Par 4 – 329 yards Heading back towards the clubhouse, this short par 4 offers another opportunity for birdie. With out of bounds running down the full right side, that shouldn’t cause too much of an issue with plenty of room out to the left. The green has bunkers guarding it front left and right but should be easy enough to navigate given a good tee shot.

www.deer-park.co.uk

Hole 10 – Par 3 – 164 yards The shortest par 3 on the course, it offers a cracking start to the back nine. Bunkers surround the green so it’s important you find the putting surface from the elevated tee. Anything that misses the green will leave you struggling to save your par. A lovely hole offering the opportunity to begin the second half of your round with a bang.

Hole 11 – Par 4 – 447 yards With water running down the full right side of the fairway, it’s important your tee shot heads down the left side to avoid the trouble. The approach to the green is tricky and we recommend you take a club less and favour the left side of the green to avoid the pond to the right. Concentration is key on this hole. Keep it straight and you shouldn’t encounter too much trouble.

13

Hole 12 – Par 5 – 510 yards The longest hole on the course, it’s a sweeping dogleg to the right that ideally will see you hug the out of bounds line on the right side to avoid the fairway bunkers and give you the ideal line for your second. This is a three shot hole for almost everyone so favour the left side with your second shot to open up the green and avoid the pot bunker on the approach to the green.

Deer Park Golf & Country Club

Course Tour CONTINUED

Hole 13 – Par 4 – 362 yards The second dog leg in a row, there are two ways you can play this hole as it sharply turns to the right. You can either take a long iron or hybrid and aim for the centre of the fairway in front of you, leaving around 120 yards to the green. Alternatively, you can be more adventurous and carry the tree on the corner to leave just a short flick with a wedge. A good risk reward hole.

Hole 14 – Par 5 – 502 yards A chance to open the shoulders with the tee shot hitting towards a generous fairway. The hole continues uphill all the way to the green. There you’ll find spectacular views overlooking Edinburgh and on a clear day, great views of Edinburgh Castle and Arthur’s Seat. Not overly tough to the eye but the gradient up the hill ensures it’s a test.

Deer Park Golf & Country Club

14

Hole 15 – Par 4 – 423 yards Heading back from where you came, the 15th runs parallel to the 14th and it’s all downhill. Your tee shot should see you hit to crest of the hill before hitting down to the green. We’d recommend some serious consideration is given to your second shot club selection here as the gradient ensures you don’t need to hit it as far as the distance reads.

www.deer-park.co.uk

Hole 16 – Par 3 – 224 yards The longest par 3 on the course there’s not too much trouble to negotiate. With bunkers left and right, picking the right club from the tee is vital if you’re going to walk off with a par. Missing the green however can leave a particularly tricky up and down. A very fair but tough par 3, you’ll be disappointed to walk off with more than a par.

Hole 17 – Par 4 – 423 yards A good drive here can set you up nicely for a short iron approach into the green and the chance of a birdie. Despite the water hazard running the full length of the hole on the left side, you’re still better aiming down that side to avoid being blocked out by a tree on the right for your approach to the sloping green. You shouldn’t encounter too many issues here.

15

Hole 18 – Par 4 – 335 yards A tough driving hole, it’s unlikely you’ll need a driver here. The green is tucked away to the left so you’re best strategy is to hit your ball to the corner, carefully avoiding the two strategically place fairway bunkers on the right. That will leave between 70 and 80 yards into the well protected green. Definitely a chance of a birdie to finish your round.
