History
I
n the late 1800’s golf courses were being established all over Scotland and in 1895 the financial community set up the Insurance & Banking Golf Club at the Duddingston estate.
www.duddingstongolfclub.co.uk
The land, part of a former deer estate, has many links with Scotland’s history including in 1745, prior to the Battle of Prestonpans, the encampment of the cavalry of Charles Edward Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie, in an area adjoining the course and known today as Cavalry Park.
7
History CONTINUED
Owned by the Duke of Abercorn the estate was set on the east flank of Edinburgh, beneath the spectacular backdrop of the 823 feet high extinct volcano Arthur’s Seat.
8
The area was considered by the club’s founding architect Willie Park to be of a size that would make a “first class course”. Well over 100 years later those that have been fortunate enough to play it would surely agree.
The course was extended in the 1960s and 1970s by John Shade and Bill Biggar and, with the addition of the new tee at the 12th hole, now measures 6,525 yards.
www.duddingstongolfclub.co.uk
The gently undulating parkland course (in Gaelic Duddingston means ‘sunny side of the hill’) is maintained to a high standard throughout the year and is considered one of the most outstanding parkland courses in the Lothians.
The club is always looking at ways to improve the course and our facilities and, while many things have changed since our inception, our dedication to offering the best course in the county is still as strong today as it was in those pioneering days at the end of the 19th century.
For more information on the club’s extensive history visit our website www. duddingstongolfclub.co.uk where you can find facts about our notable golfers and a PDF booklet about the Duddingston Golf Club War Memorial.

About the Course
S
et within the capital and beneath the spectacular backdrop of Arthur’s Seat, you will find one of Scotland’s most outstanding parkland courses.
Situated within minutes of Edinburgh’s busy city centre this tranquil setting has been home to Duddingston Golf Club since 1895, offering an historic course known for its challenging design and sweeping fairways. Set in delightful surroundings, the Braid Burn is a key feature, which meanders throughout the course, coming into play on no fewer than
14 of the 18 holes, always sitting in wait to grab that errant shot. First laid out by Willie Park in 1895, the course today measures an impressive 6,525 yards and offers a great test of golf to all visitors. Testament to the quality of the course, over the years Duddingston Golf Club has hosted a number of national, professional and amateur events. In recent years this has included the 2008 SGU South East District Championship, the 2013 Lothian Matchplay Championship and the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Optical Express Scottish PGA tour event.
www.duddingstongolfclub.co.uk
The course’s signature hole is the 426-yard 13th, nicknamed Temple. Named after the monument built by the Duke of Abercorn that stands beside the hole, your tee shot must be well positioned to allow an accurate second shot any chance of reaching the green where the ground drops down towards three bunkers on the left of the putting surface. The course design blends perfectly into the natural landscape, combining wonderful views over the capital with a peaceful environment that will ensure your round is an enjoyable one.
11
Course Tour
I
f you have never played at Duddingston Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour.
Hole 1 - Par 5 - 495 Yards A good opening hole, usually played downwind. However to reach the green in two, your drive has to be down the right half of the fairway. Otherwise the best plan is to lay up short of the big bunker on the right leaving a pitch up the full length of the green.
12
Hole 2 - Par 3 - 170 Yards A very demanding par 3. Played into the prevailing wind it requires a very straight long iron shot. Bunker and burn await the shot going left and of you miss on the right hand side you will have a tricky pitch. Be happy with a 3! Hole 3 - Par 4 - 413 Yards First of the long par 4’s. The drive should favour the left side of the fairway but watch out for the bunker about 220 yards from the tee. The second shot with a long iron or wood must be kept between the two big bunkers left and right.
Hole 4 - Par 5 - 489 Yards A lot depends on the wind. Downwind a long hitter can carry the hill and be hitting a short iron – sounds easy! However into the wind you have to decide whether or not to carry the burn in two. The approach to the green must be accurate as the ball is thrown off in all directions. Hole 5 - Par 4 - 338 Yards One of the shorter Par 4’s. Tee shot must hit the fairway – long hitters may hit a long iron or 3 wood to avoid reaching trouble on the left. Watch out for the row of fairway bunkers on the right. Second shot should be aimed left of the hole because of the fiercely sloping green. Try not to leave yourself a downhiller on this green.
www.duddingstongolfclub.co.uk
Hole 6 - Par 3 - 201 Yards Good par 3 with long narrow green. The tee shot must carry the bunker at the front of the green. The best bet is to play for the right half of the green, however the dreaded burn awaits the slice. Hole 7 - Par 4 - 381 Yards The tee shot should favour the left half of the fairway to avoid running into the trees up the right-hand side. The green is a fairly generous target, but your second shot, usually played into the wind, is very deceptive – always hit one extra club here.
Hole 8 - Par 5 - 537 Yards Most difficult of the par 5’s. Long hitters must lay up short of the burn with the tee shot. The second shot must be left of centre leaving the easiest approach. The green slopes a lot from back to front so don’t be past the pin. A true three shot par 5 so be happy with par.
Hole 10 - Par 3 - 185 Yards An elevated tee allows you to see all the trouble! Five big bunkers will catch the tee shot that is short or inaccurate. Hit one extra club as there is no trouble at the back.
Hole 9 - Par 4 - 321 Yards The tee shot is played between the fairway bunkers. From level with bunkers you have a shot of 100 yards to a big green – the only one on the course without any bunkers. Make sure you are up, as the burn will catch the mis-hit second shot.
13
Course Tour CONTINUED
Hole 11 - Par 4 - 443 Yards Stroke index 1 and justifiably so. The drive between the trees must hit the fairway to give you a chance of reaching the green in two. Into the prevailing wind most players should play for a five. The approach shot to the green should be left of centre avoiding trees and bunkers. Again, a deceptive approach with a lot of dead ground in front of the green.
14
Hole 12 - Par 4 - 409 Yards A very good driving hole. The drive must be right of centre avoiding the group of bunkers on the left. However, your problems are not over yet as your second shot uphill must be accurate. This is one occasion when short of the pin is better as you are looking at three putts from the back of this green.
Hole 13 - Par 4 - 426 Yards Tip: check where pin is on 16th green (to your right). The drive should be aimed left of the two fairway bunkers. Don’t drive right as there is no way into the green. The second shot should be aimed just inside the Temple as the ball will kick to the left. If the pin is on the left-hand side be very wary with your putt – it’s not the first time someone has putted off this green.
www.duddingstongolfclub.co.uk
Hole 14 - Par 3 - 150 Yards Shortest and probably the easiest par 3 on the course. Don’t be complacent though. Your tee shot has to be hit far enough to avoid the burn and the very deep bunkers at the front of this green. No trouble at the back.
Hole 16 - Par 4 - 386 Yards One of the most difficult par 4’s. The drive must be straight as two big trees guard the green to the right and the left. These trees are 40 yards from the middle of the green so hit one extra club for your second.
Hole 15 - Par 4 - 325 Yards Dog-leg right. Aim your tee shot left of the small tree at the top of the hill. Easiest approach is from the left side of the fairway where a short iron can set up one of the best birdie chances on the course.
Hole 17 - Par 5 - 500 Yards A definite birdie opportunity. Aim down the right hand side of the fairway to get a favourable bounce. In dry conditions this green is reachable in two. Your approach shot is longer than it looks.
Hole 18 - Par 4 - 356 Yards Named after the great Ronnie Shade. Just because he always made a three does not mean this is a push-over! From the medal tee your drive must be right of centre avoiding the groups of trees on the left. A good drive will leave a medium to short iron to a generous target. Try to ignore the burn as it is twenty yards short of the middle of the green.

Tuition
W
hether you’re an accomplished player or simply looking to get into the game, the quickest and easiest way to play better golf and lower your scores is to book a lesson with one of our PGA professionals. Duddingston is blessed with a strong and talented teaching team and with three qualified professionals there is always someone on hand to assist and advise.
www.duddingstongolfclub.co.uk
We have several styles of tuition to suit your need from a personal one-to-one lesson to a more relaxed group lesson with other players of a similar standard. Our coaching facilities include a 9-hole putting green, a full-length practice area, a short-game green and a warm up net. The teaching team also offer on-course tuition, where technique and the tactical side to the game can be addressed at the same time. Learning the correct thought process can often be an eye-opening and rewarding experience for the novice player and can lead to better scores.
We understand golf is a ‘Game For Life’, so our lessons are tailor-made to suit the individual, aiming towards improving people’s performance and enjoyment of the game. This is achieved through precise swing analysis followed by clear instruction and easy-tofollow practice drills, which allows us to install solid foundations and good fundamentals, as well as combining the individual’s own natural flair and style. Custom Fitting
T
here has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess. Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes.
The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing. This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics. Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at Duddingston and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of products all available for custom fitting.
www.duddingstongolfclub.co.uk
This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking. Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise. Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores.

Practice Facilities
W
hile some might argue that golf is never a game that can be totally mastered even by the best players who earn their living from the sport, there is no dispute that anyone can get better with a little time and application and the right practice facilities.
Here at Duddingston Golf Club we are able to offer a range of areas where you will find our members diligently working on improving their game.
The most noticeable of which is our 9-hole putting green that has been specifically prepared to enable golfers to get a feel for the speed of the greens they will encounter on the course. We are also home to a full-length practice area with mats where golfers are able to hone their wedge game and short irons.
www.duddingstongolfclub.co.uk
For those short on time, there are warm-up nets next available to get rid of the cobwebs before taking to the course. For more information or to book a lesson with one of our Pro Team on the practice facilities please call 0131 661 4301.
We are also home to a full-length practice area with mats where golfers are able to hone their entire game and to a short-game green available to golfers looking to perfect those round-saving up-and-downs.

Open Competitions
D
uddingston Golf Club runs a number of Open events each year, where golfers are warmly invited to enter and come along and play in the appropriate competition.
From beginner to scratch golfer and whether you’re female or male, there’s an event to give you a chance to take part. Our Open events are normally very popular, with early entry submission advisable. Places will normally be allocated on a first-come firstserved basis in the event that any Open event becomes oversubscribed.
The season usually kicks off in early May with the Gents Senior Open, for those 55 and over, before the Gents 18 Hole Open for the Phoenix Trophy later in the month. June is home to the Gents Senior Four Man Team Open, with the Ladies Open Greensomes coming later on that month. The following month sees our younger golfers in action with the Junior Open before the Gents 18 Hole Open a few days after, with the Gents Senior Greensomes and the Ladies Scratch Open rounding out July.
www.duddingstongolfclub.co.uk
In mid-August the Gents Open Fourball takes place while the Mixed Foursomes Open is usually at the start of September, before the Gents Senior Open Texas Scramble closes out the season in October. Details of all the open competitions can be found on the club website at www.duddingstongolfclub.co.uk or call 0131 661 7688.
