Welcome Nestling in rolling unspoilt Kent countryside Faversham is quite simply one of the loveliest golf courses in the south east of England. Complementing its beautiful surroundings Faversham has all you would expect from a long established parkland course with manicured tree-lined fairways, wellconditioned and maintained tees and greens and imaginatively sculpted holes.
The hurricane in 1987 had a devastating effect on the woodland on and surrounding the course but it has now regained its splendour. The impressive new clubhouse built in 1997 has added to its attraction. Our 18-hole course is ideal for golfers of all abilities to learn and develop their game. Indeed its challenges have set some of its members on the path to fame and fortune with former European
Tour, and current European Seniors and Champions Tour player, Roger Chapman, and Solheim Cup captain Mickey Walker both having honed their skills here. Visitors and golf societies are always made very welcome at Faversham and we invite you to come and enjoy a lovely course, some excellent catering and everything else that our historic club has to offer.

History Faversham Golf Club was founded in 1902 by “12 fervent disciples and 20 or so lukewarm supporters”. At this time the course was situated in Magden Marsh and unlike now suffered greatly from the wet! In June 1911 the club moved to its present home in Belmont Park with the land being leased from Lord Harris, the Kent and England cricket captain. The club had a slightly unusual condition in the original lease which is still in force today stipulating that the golf is
6 | www.favershamgolf.co.uk
subject to gaming and sporting rights i.e. pheasant shoots have priority! The course was originally built as a 2,730- yard, par 38, nine-hole circuit after some disagreements between Lord Harris and James Braid as to the number of trees to be removed. In its first set of rules drawn up in 1911, fees were set at 1 guinea and 2 guineas for the entrance fee and membership respectively. It is at this point that the club’s long association with Shepherd Neame began with the local brewer presenting the
club with a horse. During the 1920s the course was extended to 18 holes and developed in its maturity. Clyd Foster, in an article in the London Evening News, spoke of a visit to Faversham Golf Club in glowing terms: “Belmont is an undulating golf course through grand glades, but somehow - because I think, of its air and sylvan peacefulness - it gives no feeling of fatigue during the journey round. The olde deep-rooted turf holds the
springiness of a rich carpet. You tread softly all the way; and that it is a boon and a blessing to a golfing man.” Going from strength to strength during the 30s, the club hosted its first Kent Professional’s Championship in 1937 where the Knole Park professional Sam King kept the 1936 Open Champion, Alf Pagham, at bay with a win by 1 shot. The 1940s were a difficult time for the country and also for the club which had to close in February 1943, but did maintain five holes for the use of a
few, including golfing soldiers. On derequisitioning by the Army in October 1945 and with £350 ‘dilapidation compensation’, the course re-opened in April 1946. Ryder Cup players Sam King and Alf Pagham played two exhibition matches in the early 1950s, but the decade was a difficult one for the club. Despite some very difficult financial times Faversham managed to survive, where many did not.
With an upsurge in memberships in the 1960s, the club’s finances took a turn for the better and with some course alterations was re-measured to 6,036 yards with a standard scratch of 69 against a par of 70.

The 1970s were a particularly exciting time for the club, with the emergence of our two finest players. Mickey Walker twice won the British Ladies Amateur Trophy and was selected to play in the Curtis Cup. Mickey won a string of national championships and became the first British winner on the US LPGA tour. She went on to captain Europe’s Solheim Cup team on four occasions and was awarded the OBE for her services to golf.
In 1977, member Roger Chapman brought home to Belmont Park the Kent Open Championship trophy, the first of many prestigious amateur wins before he turned professional and subsequently won his first Tour event, the Zimbabwe Open, in 1988. Some 24 years later Roger was to enjoy his two greatest triumphs as a 53-year-old, as he won the 2012 Senior PGA Championship and the 2012 U.S. Senior Open.
Further improvements were made to the club’s facilities, including the addition of a new practice area in the 1980s.

History
(continued)
The storms of October 1987 had a devastating effect on the course and hundreds of trees were felled. Despite the damage and due to the extraordinary efforts of the greens staff and members the course was back in play within a month. It was a memorable year for another reason – as our current Professional, Stuart Rokes, joined the club as Assistant Professional.
Work to bring the greens up to their current immaculate standard were undertaken in the 1990s and in December 1997 our new clubhouse was opened by Tour Professional and member Roger Chapman.
The club has continued to prosper and is always striving to provide the best for its members both on and off the course.
Faversham celebrated its centenary in style in 2002, with a 10-day festival of golf and many social events.
www.favershamgolf.co.uk | 11
The Course The course at Faversham has developed considerably since 1902 when it was laid down as a 2,730-yard, par 38, nine-hole course by James Braid. Over the years a further nine holes have been added to give it its current length of 6,000 yards. Surprisingly, this is shorter than it was back in 1960 when it was measured at 6,036 yards, but with a Standard Scratch Score of 69, just one fewer than par, you will appreciate this is no pushover despite its modest length.
12 | www.favershamgolf.co.uk
The course features mature trees and woodlands, undulating, tight fairways and well presented greens which demand accuracy and a wellstruck putt. How to score well? Who better to ask than Head Professional Stuart Rokes, who has enjoyed playing at Faversham since his days as a junior. “You need accuracy first and foremost,” Stuart says. “Accuracy off the tee is vital, it’s a tight golf course.
“Good distance control with approach shots will also help because although the greens are in very good condition, they are relatively small.” There are many holes that will live long in the memory, but the highlight for many comes near to the end of the round. Stuart adds: “The 16th is our signature hole, it’s what most people who have played the course here before will always mention. It’s a par three, it’s only
a nine-iron long but it’s a do or die. You hit the green you’re fine, but if you miss it either side you’ve got trees and slopes and other trouble all over the place.” Improvements to the course are always ongoing and along with a long-term greens maintenance programme supervised by our appointed agronomist and expertly administered by our green staff, greens approaches have been extended, bunkers reshaped and a new 10th was completed in 2013 which took the course up to 6,000 yards.
A culmination of the improvements carried out over the years means that the course only uses temporary greens during heavy frost and unlike many in the locality does not have to close due to prolonged spells of wet weather.

Take the Course Tour If you have never played Faversham before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our course tour courtesy of Stuart Rokes, our PGA Professional.
14 | www.favershamgolf.co.uk
Hole 1 (Alpha) 472 yards, par 5 An accurate tee shot is required avoiding out of bounds left and the big tree on the right. The right side of the fastrunning green is best. Hole 2 (Bewitched) 299 yards, par 4 Drive to the left side of the fairway to avoid falling into the bunker. Aim your approach to the left side of the green as this will gather the ball.
Hole 3 (Treason) 156 yards, par 3 Bunkers guard both sides of this short par 3, which often plays one club longer than it looks. Hole 4 (Orchard) 419 yards, par 4 A tight tee shot through an avenue of trees. Avoid the cross bunkers about 60 yards short of the green with your approach.
Hole 5 (Fifth Avenue) 330 yards, par 4 An accurate tee shot is required to avoid the fairway bunkers either side. The green is fast and slopes from right to left, so it is a distinct advantage to be below the hole. Hole 6 (Punch Bowl) 356 yards, par 4 Keep left of the big tree from the tee. The approach is all downhill with trouble over the back of the green, so choose your club wisely, particularly in firm conditions.
Hole 7 (Long) 539 yards, par 5 All but the longer hitters should play this as a genuine three-shot hole. Avoid the bunkers and out of bounds down the left and be aware of the very long green. Hole 8 (Honesty) 363 yards, par 4 Favour the left side of the fairway, but note there is out of bounds down that side ready to penalise the errant tee shot. Check the pin position on this two-tiered green.
Hole 9 (Silence) 141 yards, par 3 A well-guarded green with a false front, trust your yardage. Also check the wind as it usually blows across this hole. Hole 10 (Homeward) 372 yards, par 4 Avoid the trees on the right of this dog leg right, but do not be too conservative as trees and out of bounds await on the left. Take note of the pin position and take an extra club if the flag is on the top tier of this split-level green.

Take the Course Tour
(continued)
Hole 11 (Harmony) 399 yards, par 4 A long tee shot is needed if you want to reach this tough par 4 in regulation. The approach plays long, so take an extra club as you need to carry to the green.
16 | www.favershamgolf.co.uk
Hole 12 (Far Away) 444 yards, par 4 Two long shots are required to reach this testing par 4. Take note of the flag position before firing in your approach to the very long green and take care to avoid the deep bunker on the left.
Hole 13 (Calamity) 178 yards, par 3 The hole is aptly named, because a calamity is certainly in store if your tee shot goes left. Take enough club and aim for the right of the green just to be safe.
Hole 14 (Roadway) 364 yards, par 4 An accurate tee shot is required to avoid out of bounds left and trees on the right and stay clear of the bunkers that guard either side of the green.
Hole 16 (Porter’s Folly) 144 yards, par 3 Don’t let the modest yardage catch you off guard. Just make sure you hit the green otherwise this hole can be a card wrecker!
Hole 15 (Treadmill) 327 yards, par 4 A good tee shot will carry the ridge on this dogleg right. Another fast green, so you want to be below the hole.
Hole 17 (Rooksway) 299 yards, par 4 Keep to the right side of the fairway to set up what should be a birdie opportunity on this short par 4.
Hole 18 (Omega) 376 yards, par 4 Avoid the trees on the right to keep your score intact on this strong finishing hole. The carry over the cross bunker is further than it looks.

Practice Facilities Faversham Golf Club is committed to offering its members all the facilities possible to enable members the chance to become as proficient at the game of golf as their talent and application allows. As well as the highly-regarded tuition on offer from our Head Professional, Stuart Rokes, there are several areas where players can work on ingraining new swing thoughts or turning previously weaker areas of their game into strengths.
Faversham has a number of practice areas, where you can either warm up before a round or work on those fundamentals. A very large practice area can be found at the end of the 14th hole. Around 300 yards in length, it allows any club in the bag to be hit safely. Open to members and those taking lessons, golfers take along their own balls and have the option to either hit off mats or from natural turf. There are half a dozen flags strategically placed for focused practice.
Those in the know appreciate that a sharp short game is the quickest way to lower one’s handicap and for members who wish to focus on the scoring side of the game we have a dedicated short game area stretching to around 120 yards with bunkers and a green. Practise your putting on our large putting green outside the clubhouse or practise both putting and chipping on the practice green near the first tee.

Clubhouse and Facilities In the mid-nineties, the members of Faversham Golf Club decided to build a new clubhouse. This impressive building was officially opened in December 1997. In addition to an administration office, men’s and ladies locker rooms and the Pro Shop on the ground floor, it has a large bar and dining area, kitchen and a function room on the first floor. Patio style doors from the bar lead to an outside veranda which provides some excellent views of the course.

Open Competitions Faversham is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our club in 1902. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before. One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of competitions aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities. Our Open Week, generally held in early June, provides six
consecutive days of events running through from Monday to Saturday. A Texas scramble normally starts the week. Stableford competitions take place on the Wednesday and Friday, but with slightly different formats each time. For those who like pairs golf, Tuesday sees separate competitions for Men, Ladies and Mixed Pairs and there is a Stableford Pairs competition for Seniors on the Thursday. With two Texas Scrambles as well, there truly should be something to appeal to
everybody and with prizes on offer and very modest entry fees it makes for an excellent day out. The formats and running order may change slightly from year to year, but you will find details of upcoming events on our website, together with information about how you can reserve your place.

Social Activities With excellent facilities and a sociable, friendly group of members, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the off-course benefits of being a member at Faversham Golf Club.
An extensive and varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in entertainment.
These social occasions range from the more formal, such as the summer ball and annual balls which are one of the highlights of the year at the club, through to dances and invited acts such as tribute bands, which also prove to be popular.

Social Activities
(continued)
The catering at Faversham is held in high regard and many of our social gatherings are an excellent excuse to sample the fare provided by club’s superb caterers.
Significant dates in the calendar are invariably celebrated with friends at the club. Christmas is traditionally a special time for all, with a lunch held in the clubhouse for the adults and a Christmas party for the younger ones.
Another big night for the club (particularly if you have been lucky enough to win a trophy) is the annual prize-giving in February where members from all sections at Faversham gather to pay tribute to those who have shown their prowess on the golf course over the preceding 12 months.
