welcome Lying on the enviably picturesque Essex coast, Frinton Golf Club is home to a jewel of a course situated in the north east of the county. Our 18 hole course is one of the finest in the area and has a distinct advantage over many of our competitors in being open all year and very rarely relying on temporary tees or greens. It presents an interesting challenge to golfers of all abilities. At 6,149 yards the course is not excessively long, especially by modern standards, but that does not mean it is to be underestimated. Our fast, undulating greens will test even the best putters, whilst accurately placed shots are required to avoid the number of tidal fletes our course contains. The trademark of this links-like course is the ever changing sea-breeze which will require you to select your clubs carefully for each shot. Our clubhouse was the first individually designed and constructed clubhouse in England. It was constructed in 1904/05 for the 300 members of the day. We embrace that tradition and the modern additions to our clubhouse make it a welcoming atmosphere for members and visitors alike. We pride ourselves on the friendliness of our staff who aim to provide the very highest standard of customer service to make each visit as enjoyable as possible for visitors and members alike.

club history Golf at Frinton is as old as the town, but the Club has a more vibrant history and these days arguably a more progressive outlook. Frinton Golf Club was founded in 1895. The original course was designed by Tom Dunn and was located on land which is now Second and Third Avenues. In 1904, twice Open Champion Willie Park Jnr. designed a new 18 hole course on the present site, an area formerly renowned for hare coursing.

On the advice of the famous golf course architect Harry S Colt, various improvements were made to the original design that left the layout largely as we know it today.

Over the years many famous golfers have played at Frinton, including (in the early part of the twentieth century) the great triumvirate of Vardon, Braid and Taylor.

These improvements, however, were greatly set back by the coming of the Second World War. Frinton lies on a stretch of coast that was thought to be a possible site for an enemy invasion and so, with the exception of the first three holes, the course was requisitioned by the Army and sown with mines. The resultant damage was obviously considerable and it was not until 1947 that the course began to resume its former shape.

In 1929 the British Professionals practised at Frinton prior to their first Ryder Cup victory at Moortown. A member of that team, 1923 Open Champion Arthur Havers, was subsequently to return in 1956 as Club Professional, a post he held until his retirement in 1964. In more recent years Frinton has been at the forefront of change by being one of the first to embrace total equality of the sexes in its membership.

about the courses Frinton Golf Club is a private membersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; club, renowned throughout East Anglia for the quality of its golf courses and its friendly welcome towards visitors.

Having two courses is a special bonus to the Club and its location beside the sea and underlying soil conditions mean that the courses remain open all year, when other courses are closed or have restricted play. The 18 hole, par 71 Havers Course offers 6,149 yards of challenging links style golf that changes in character every day.

The 9 hole Kirby Course, at 2,774 yards, is a good test of golf and welcomes all standards of player. The Kirby Course is the perfect way for golfers of all ages to learn the game, play in competitions and swiftly progress on to the Havers Course.

hole by hole course tour The Havers Course Hole 1 - Par 4, 348 yards:

A solid drive just right of centre will get your round off to the best start on this potentially tricky opening hole. Two bunkers on the left of the green mean that attacking it from the right is your best chance of making it on in two, for the opportunity of an opening birdie.

Hole 2 - Par 4, 445 yards:

Like the first hole youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll want to keep your tee shot to the right of the fairway. A host of bunkers peppered across the fairway can make life tricky for the shorter hitters. The two-tiered green means it is essential to find the correct level when aiming for the pin.

Hole 3 - Par 3, 179 yards:

Hole 4 - Par 5, 475 yards:

This hole is all about navigating the numerous fairway bunkers that can play havoc with your chances of an under par score. Many of these will come into play at your second shot, but the longer hitters may be tempted to risk it and reach the green in two. For the shorter hitters a more tactical approach may be required.

With a bunker to the left and a pond to the right, club selection is vital on the first par three of the course. A clean shot should stand you in good stead to make the green and have a go at a birdie.

hole by hole course tour Hole 5 - Par 4, 360 yards:

Aim left off the tee, but beware of the small ponds that lie just on the out of bounds area. Two bunkers just short of the green will punish those who fall short on their second shot - so club selection is crucial.

Hole 6 - Par 3, 153 yards:

Sheltered by the sea wall, this hole can be made tricky depending on the direction of the wind. Be sure to account for the wind before selecting a club as you may need to give it a little more, or less, in order to avoid the brook and reach the green.

Hole 7 - Par 4, 368 yards:

For the ideal line aim to the right of the pill-box by the sea wall. Long hitters be aware of the ditch that lies 100 yards short of the hole. The best advice is to lay up short and hit the green with your second shot.

hole by hole course tour Hole 8 - Par 3, 163 yards:

Bunkers on the right and the brook to the left can make this hole a tricky one. However, a dead straight iron shot off the tee should see you reach the green without issue.

Hole 9 - Par 4, 417 yards:

Aiming left of centre on your first shot will give you the best view of a green which has a bunker on either side. Beware the flete at around 270 yards off of the tee.

Hole 10 - Par 4, 417 yards:

You have reached the halfway stage of the course, but you have still got nine tough holes to go. The tenth is one of the simplest in terms of shot placement. Two straight shots will get you on to the green for a birdie opportunity.

hole by hole course tour Hole 11 - Par 5, 475 yards:

The difficulties on this hole can be found right at the end. Two good shots could get the long hitters to the green, or three for the shorter hitters. However, in either case it is advised to hit your approach to the green just past the flag, or you will leave yourself a tough downhill putt.

Hole 12 - Par 4, 312 yards:

A stream running across the fairway and two bunkers short of the green can punish those brave enough to attempt to reach the green in one on this short par four. Aiming for the right of the fairway will help open up the green for your second shot.

Hole 13 - Par 3, 118 yards:

This may be a short hole, but the undulating green does not guarantee a birdie for those who reach it from the tee. Careful consideration must be taken as to the position of the pin.

Hole 14 - Par 4, 382 yards:

Right of centre is the best bet again to help open up the green. Three bunkers that surround the green will punish anyone who leaves their ball short on their second shot.

hole by hole course tour Hole 15 - Par 4, 400 yards:

A ditch, 121 yards short of the green, has been known to swallow up shots from big hitters so it is best to pitch up short and work your way to the green. Aim to the right to avoid sand traps on the left of the putting surface.

Hole 16 - Par 3, 181 yards:

The green slopes from back to front so it is always preferable to leave your ball just short of the pin for an easier putt.

Hole 17 - Par 5, 488 yards:

Once again this is a hole for the big hitters. Two straight shots will get you on the green - but beware the bunkers guarding the green.

Hole 18 - Par 5, 468 yards:

There is a flete at 245 yards which must be avoided by the long hitters. Unless you can carry this it is best to go short from the tee. The final green is surrounded by three bunkers which can end your round on a sour note. A par on this hole is no mean feat. Now reward yourself with a drink in the clubhouse.

The Kirby course The Kirby Course The Kirby Course aims to provide an introduction to those starting out in the game. However, experienced players too will find a round or two on the Kirby Course invaluable if they want to improve their short game. It has often been said that a golfer is not complete until he or she has played the Kirby Course in par.

At 1,417 yards, it is not too daunting for youngsters or beginners but its par 30 over 9 holes can set a stern test for the more experienced golfer. With narrower fairways than the Havers Course and smaller greens, the premium is very much on accuracy.

The greens are cared for with the same attention as on the Havers Course, thereby providing fine putting surfaces. With the fletes coming into play at most holes, the Kirby Course will provide an interesting challenge for golfers of all abilities.

the clubhouse Frinton Golf Club is justifiably proud of its historic clubhouse, with its commanding view over the golf course and surrounding countryside. The club has made considerable improvements to the clubhouse in recent years, so that it now boasts excellent facilities â&#x20AC;&#x201C; changing, refreshment and social areas all having been subject to sympathetic modernisation to improve the overall experience of the club for members, their guests and visitors alike. The history of the club is still, however, much in evidence as the impressive display of trophies and mementoes of former times bear witness. There is nowhere better to relax after a round of golf than in our fine Terrace Bar and on sunny days you can enjoy your drinks outside on the terrace with its fine view of the course and, in particular, the finishing (par 5) 18th hole. On summer evenings the terrace is the ideal location to enjoy a glass of wine or a beer and watch the often spectacular setting sun. Our terrace is said by many to command the finest view in Frinton! The clubhouse boasts a beautiful lounge that is the venue for many club dinners and dances, as well as hosting private parties, weddings and other functions. Our private dining room lends itself particularly well to smaller gatherings and events whilst the Plumpton Room is ideal for meetings. JUNIOR GOLFERS Frinton Golf Club believes strongly that its future will be strengthened by the development and nurture of its junior golfers. The club currently has some 50 junior members and is active, in conjunction with Coastal Golf Academy, in encouraging more young people to play golf. CGA has a continuous programme of bringing school classes to Frinton Golf Club on a regular basis to learn the game, as well as running regular weekend training sessions and competitions for its junior members. Junior golfers from Frinton Golf Club regularly take part in, and win, county-wide golf competitions

– some progressing to achieve national competitive status. In September 2016 Frinton Golf Club became the first golf club in Essex to win the national GolfMark award from England Golf. GolfMark is a national accreditation that has been designed to support all golf clubs, however big or small, to achieve distinct operating standards in four areas of a club’s business activity; • Recruitment & Retention: supporting the club to attract new members and increase the participation of existing members.
