History
T
he Fulwell Golf Club was formally opened for play on Saturday 19 November 1904 with its first Captain, Mr Harry Tomlinson I.S.O, and first President, Sir Frederick Dixon-Hartland MP (Uxbridge), Bart. Other early Presidents included Viscount Villiers, Rt. Hon. Lord Riddell, Sir Frederick Freake and Lord Saltoun.
The course, previously farmland, leased from the Freake Estate, was compulsory purchased by Middlesex County Council, assisted by the London County Council, Teddington Urban District Council and Twickenham Borough Council, in 1936, to preserve the course as Green Belt Land.
The course was designed by J.H. Taylor on similar lines to his own course at Mid-Surrey, an outer 18 holes’ course and an inner 18 holes for ladies with further course alterations carried out under Colt/ Mackenzie, in 1921.
During the Second World War, the second course was closed and used for agricultural purposes, as in the First World War, and did not open for play after the war ended.
During 1933/34, the club had an opportunity to buy the land that covered the two courses and frontage on Wellington Road from the Freake Estate. Unfortunately, the Committee took too long deciding and the offer was withdrawn.
www.fulwellgolfclub.co.uk
The new landlords, Middlesex County Council and the club had meetings as early as April 1945 to discuss building and re-designing a new course. The course architect was J.S.F. Morrison of Colt, Alison and Morrison.

History CONTINUED Welcome Seven existing holes were used and eleven new holes created, using three further existing greens. The course that we now know was opened for play on 30 August 1958 and has hosted many professional and amateur events through its 112 years.

The History of the Professionals
W
hen The Fulwell Golf Club was formed in November 1904, its first professional was R.G. Hepburn, whose brother J. Hepburn was the professional at neighbouring Home Park Golf Club. He moved from the Royston Golf Club, Herts and stayed at The Fulwell until 1906. P.J. Gaudin, a Jersey man, arrived from Manchester Golf Club to replace Hepburn. He was born in Grouville Common, Jersey on 4 March 1878 and was one of five professional golfing brothers. While at The Fulwell, Gaudin represented England against Scotland in 1906, 1907, 1909, 1912 and 1913. January 1914, after eight years, saw the departure of P.J. Gaudin when he joined the newly formed Camberley Heath Golf Club.
10 / The Fulwell Golf Club
P.E. Taylor of Littlehampton Golf Club was appointed in February 1914. After seven years, Phil Taylor was appointed Professional to the Victoria Golf Club, British Columbia, Canada and sailed from England on February 18 1921. W.G. Oke (Honor Oak Club) was the next to be appointed Professional to The Fulwell in March 1921. In November 1930, George Oke was appointed Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Professional Golfers’ Association before, in June 1932, Oke played for the English team at Princes Club, Kent, which beat Scotland by 13 matches to three.
www.fulwellgolfclub.co.uk
In July 1937, George Oke played for England for the second time in their annual match against Scotland at Carnoustie. England won this match by nine matches to seven. Bill Cox (Wimbledon Park) was also included in the England side. In late September 1946 W. J. (Bill) Cox, the Ryder Cup player, was appointed Professional at The Fulwell to succeed George Oke, who retired a few months earlier, due to illness. Bill Cox (Wimbledon Park) took up his duties on November 1, 1946. In the Queen’s Birthday honours list 1967, Bill Cox was awarded the OBE for services to golf. In 1975, Bill Cox, aged sixty-five years, retired as professional at The Fulwell.
www.fulwellgolfclub.co.uk
David Haslam (Manchester GC) took over from Bill Cox on 1 October 1975 and served for 20 years, retiring in 1995, and is now an honorary member of the golf Club. Nigel Turner was appointed Head Professional following the departure of David Haslam and took over on 1 October 1995, arriving from the Army Golf Club and remains in position today.

About the Course Welcome
T
he parkland course at The Fulwell makes the most of the 130 acres it is set on with every hole on the course varying in length and layout.
Measuring at 6,465, with a standard scratch of 71, visitors can expect a challenge from start to finish. Each hole provides its own challenge, with the tree-lined fairways and subtle borrows on the well-maintained greens adding to this demanding yet delightful test of golf.
www.fulwellgolfclub.co.uk
The course contains four par threes, three par fives and eleven par fours. Each have their own different challenges, while the signature hole is undoubtedly the par three, 163-yard 9th, which demands superb accuracy teeing off over the lake into a narrow green with bunkers guarding the front and side of the green. For more information on the course’s condition and availability please call 0208 977 3844.

Course Tour
I
f you have never played at The Fulwell Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour. Hole 1 - Par 4 - 369 Yards The course starts with a short dogleg right where a good position from the tee is vital. Only a second shot played from the left side of the fairway will give a good opportunity to open up the green. The longer hitters may attempt to drive the ditch situated 270 yards from the tee. The green is guarded by a bunker left and right.
14 / The Fulwell Golf Club
Hole 2 - Par 4 - 417 Yards A good test of length and accuracy awaits on the second with a tee shot up the left hand side of the fairway required. Anywhere right and you will be blocked out for your second shot to the green by the trees. With a bunker left and trouble behind, favour the right hand side of the green with your approach. Hole 3 - Par 4 - 401 Yards A small dogleg left with the fairway pushing you right makes the hole play longer than its yardage, unless you take on the bunker 240 yards out with a gentle right to left shot from the tee. A well-protected green with a bunker left and right requires an accurate approach to give you a chance to score.
www.fulwellgolfclub.co.uk
Hole 4 - Par 4 - 291 Yards Next comes the shortest par four on the course and often considered as the first real birdie opportunity. Some will attempt to drive the green in one whilst others will hit a shorter shot from the tee to allow for a wedge into the green. The left hand side of the fairway is favourable with the green angled from left to right; a testing green awaits. Hole 5 - Par 5 - 470 Yards The first par five on the course and another scoring hole. A wellplaced tee shot will allow for an opportunity to attack the green in two and a birdie opportunity. Be careful of the ditch which is 70 yards short of the green. For those not attacking the green in two, a layup short of the ditch will leave a short iron shot into the long green which is protected by a bunker left and right.
www.fulwellgolfclub.co.uk
Hole 6 - Par 3 - 152 Yards The first of four testing par threes on the course. Four bunkers protect the green that slopes from back to front with an accurate tee shot required through the trees. Hit the green and you will have a good chance to keep your score ticking, however it is not a certainty with subtle burrows when putting across the green. Hole 7 - Par 4 - 397 Yards Two good shots are required here with the approach into a doubletiered green requiring accuracy. Drive down the left hand side of the fairway to avoid the fairway bunker gathering any wayward shot, leaving yourself a mid-range shot into the green. It doesn’t look a tough hole from the tee but walk off with a par and you will be a happy golfer.
The Fulwell Golf Club / 15
Course Tour CONTINUED Hole 8 - Par 4 - 452 Yards This is a long par four and requires two good hits to the green. This is a low stroke index hole and some will play as a par five and not risk a high number. A wide fairway allows you to open your shoulders, which needs to be followed by a lengthy accurate second into a long narrow green. With bunkers left and right, don’t be afraid to lay up short and use your short game skills. Hole 9 - Par 3 - 163 Yards The signature hole of the course and a beautiful view from the tee. A tee shot over the lake and through the trees is required with the green widening towards the back of the green. Three bunkers guard the front of the green with further bunkers on the left and right. Accuracy is the key on this hole.
16 / The Fulwell Golf Club
Hole 10 - Par 4 - 354 Yards A short opening to the back nine but also another test of accuracy. A tee shot from right to left is required avoiding the copse of trees on the left. The approach shot always plays a little longer so always take one more club to avoid the bunker protecting the front of the green; a four is by no means a given on this hole. Hole 11 - Par 5 - 500 Yards A par five which comes to life when you reach the green. A gentle tee shot with space right is followed by a layup avoiding the fairway bunker 100 yards from the green. This hole is all about the approach to a kidney shaped green. Miss the green left or right and you will struggle to make par. The green sloping from back to front and narrowing in the middle is one of the best and most testing you will play as a golfer.
www.fulwellgolfclub.co.uk
Hole 12 - Par 4 - 414 Yards A brilliant par four which requires length, accuracy and course management. With the tee shot there is plenty of room, a drive from left to right is ideal. The approach requires precision with any shot coming up short, rolling back down the slope to the front of the green. If the pin is located in the back right position, play for the centre of the green unless you are willing to gamble. Hole 13 - Par 3 - 198 Yards The longest of the par threes and one that has many shot options. An open front to the green allowing you to run the ball in is arguably the safest option but for those wishing to pitch the green, watch out for the bunkers right and left protecting the pin when it is on either side of the green.
www.fulwellgolfclub.co.uk
Hole 14 - Par 4 - 420 Yards The toughest hole on the course with all of your golfing ability required. Normally playing into wind, this hole can play even longer. A solid drive into an inviting fairway is required followed by a long second shot into a wide green, which is protected by a large bunker across the left side. Hole 15 - Par 4 - 338 Yards With a ditch and out of bounds on the right, this is not a hole to open your shoulders. A tee shot down the left hand side avoiding the fairway bunker is preferable with a green angled from left to right. The approach will be required to fly the whole way onto the raised green, beware of missing left however as the ditch will be awaiting any errant shots.
The Fulwell Golf Club / 17
18 / The Fulwell Golf Club
www.fulwellgolfclub.co.uk
Course Tour CONTINUED Hole 16 - Par 3 - 165 Yards The last of the par threes and proof you do not need bunkers to make a hole tough. A raised green which is narrow but long is testing with any shot coming short filtering away to the front left of the green. Miss the green right or left and you have a challenge on your hands to make par.
Hole 18 - Par 4 - 399 Yards You are nearly home but what a finish this hole provides. A tee shot out to the left side is required followed by a mid-to-long iron into the green. Anything short will fall into the ditch running across the front of the green which slopes from back to front. A four to finish will send you home a happy golfer.
Hole 17 - Par 5 - 565 Yards The last par five and course management is required, you can open your shoulders from the tee and hit to the open fairway. Your second shot is key to success, get past the oak on the left and you’re in a great position to hit the green with your approach. Leave yourself in the wrong section of the green and it will be a tough two putt.
Once complete, enjoy the 19th hole.
