Welcome Hayling Golf Club was founded in 1883 by members of the Sandeman family. The club has a rich history involving many celebrities, wartime activities, and course improvements by well-known course architects. Hayling Golf Club is one of the few true links courses on the South Coast of England and one of the very few with panoramic views of the sea and coastline. From most holes you can see across the Solent to the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower. The windswept fairways and fast greens make it a challenge for even the best golfers but the relatively modest length of just over 6500 yards doesn’t deter any standard of golfer.

The ‘art deco style’ clubhouse was rebuilt in 2002 and is located within yards of the first clubhouse built in 1899. It was positioned with the beautiful curved lines facing the course. The Bar and Restaurant areas taking full advantage of the views with the full-length wrap around balcony on the first floor, offering spectacular views over the course, beach, Solent coastline and Sinah Lake. In addition there is a private function room on the ground floor with views over Sinah Lake available for hire and a viewing platform on the second floor for visitors to enjoy.

History In 1883 South Hayling was described as a ‘parish watering place’, a village with a branch line from Havant, five miles East of Portsmouth. This connection supported investments for developing the island into a salubrious vacation destination for wealthy families, one of these being the Sandeman family, famous for their port and sherry business. One of the Sandeman brothers, Fleetwood Sandeman, had been introduced to golf through his friendship with the Rev J Cumming Macdona, who was a member at Hoylake and Pau in France. Macdona announced in ‘The Field’ magazine that Fleetwood Sandeman intended to form a new golf course on Hayling Island. It was not until 3rd August 1883 that Hayling Island Golfing Club was formally inaugurated at a meeting in Whin Hurst, South Hayling, the home of John Glas Sandeman, and presided over by Macdona who had travelled from Cheshire especially for the

meeting. Fleetwood was elected Captain and his brother John Glas as Treasurer. The committee engaged a professional, ‘The General’ Joe Lloyd, from Hoylake, who won the US Open in 1897: he helped lay out the first 9 holes on Beach Common, to the east of the current club’s location. A year later, in 1884, a full 18 hole course was realised when leases on Sinah Common allowed the course to be extended west. The Club acquired freehold of the land in the 1920’s. At that time the committee also formed Hayling Island Ladies Golf Club and appointed John Glas’s daughters Maud as Lady Captain and Ella as Secretary/ Treasurer. The club negotiated a long lease on Sinah Common in 1897, and it was then decided to build a clubhouse at a cost of £1000. It

was eventually built in 1899 and stayed for over 100 years. In 1902 an exhibition match was held between Harry Vardon and James Braid and soon afterwards in 1905 J H Taylor was commissioned to advise on course alterations for a Fee of £11. The course has evolved over time, with a number of architects being involved in that evolution, including Tom Dunn, JH Taylor and Harry Colt. But it was surely Tom Simpson, the renowned golf course architect, who left his ensuring mark on the

course when his changes in 1932 and after the war in 1946 made the course very much as it is today. In 1938 the secretary Mr A P Patey started a programme of shingle extraction with the Hayling Coal and Transport Co. which created the lake near the clubhouse, provided a steady income stream, and more importantly a new source of water for the course. The course has hosted many competitions over the years in particular the English Ladies Closed Championships in 1936, 1948, and 1966.

Our Course Hayling Golf Club is situated amongst the sandhills of the South Western coast of Hayling Island and is one of the few seaside courses where the sea is in view from most holes. It has played host to many tournaments and championships throughout the club’s history.

At 6,529 yards off the white tees the course is not long but it can be really challenging in the prevailing south-westerly winds.

The SSSI site is home to many varieties of plants and wildlife. The panoramic views of the English Channel, the yachts in the Solent and Langstone Harbour provide relief even during the worst rounds of golf.

Significant investment over the years has maintained a first-class golf experience for members and visitors alike. Our links course is rated among the top 100 courses in England, ranked 60th in 2019, and is highly rated in the list of links courses throughout the British Isles.

The undulating fairways and fast greens drain very rapidly even after the heaviest rainfall allowing golf to be played throughout the year.

Deep bunkers and gorse lined fairways punish those wayward shots but the extra run on the ball on fairways flatters the driving.

Visitors from far and wide come to play the course as it provides such a change from the parkland and heathland courses throughout the UK.

Hole By HoleTour Check-in at our Professional’s Shop then spend a few minutes on either of the two practice greens or on the practice range or nets. Both practice greens are typical of the fast greens on the course.

1st Hole

Trap | Hole 1, 180 yards The 180 yard par 3 1st is usually into the prevailing south-westerly wind, and the deep centrally placed bunker catches anything short so take plenty of club and avoid the gorse on the right and out of bounds left. Seal | Hole 2, 494 yards Follows the same direction but as a 494 yard par 5 is more forgiving. The bunkers at 230 yards right of the fairway push the long hitters into the rough on the left. Deep bunkers guard either side of the green. As you leave the green see the pillbox left after WW2 and watch the massive container vessels heading for Southampton. Broom | Hole 3, 402 yards At 402 yards it is a good par 4 with a 150 yard carry over the dunes. Big hitters beware the gorse left of the fairway. The slight dog-leg right has a sloping green guarded by a deep green side bunker and a steep slope behind.

Butts | Hole 4, 404 yards Back south to the sea with a 404 yards par 4. A slight dog-leg left but long hitters must take care to avoid the fairway bunkers and gorse to the right of the fairway. A deep bunker guards the right side of the green.

7th Hole

Narrows | Hole 5, 165 yards Only 165 yards but aptly named with a long narrow raised green with a deep bunker to the left and gorse right. It needs an accurate shot to stay on the green avoiding the steep slope right. Cutting | Hole 6, 430 yards Stroke 1 for men with good reason. A long par 4 at 430 yards with a wide water-filled cutting 100 yards short of the pin. A bunker right of the fairway catches many, and the long green is bunkered left. If the traffic admits this is the time to cut across to the 15th tee for a short round.

Death or Glory | Hole 7, 500 yards The motto of the 17th Lancers of which Sandeman’s son was a member. A dog-leg left par 5 at 500 yards. Having avoided the bunkers right and left of the fairway the critical shot is to the two-level green. With a slope behind it can be tricky if the pin is on the top level. Crater | Hole 8, 350 yards A par 4 350 yards sounds easy, but the drive must carry over 150 yards of severe rough and is often caught by the well-placed bunker at 214 yards. A blind shot over the dunes to the green in a bowl requires knowledge of the pin position. 8th Hole

Hole By HoleTour Plain | Hole 9, 408 yards A testing 408 yard par 4. A good straight drive over the marker post on top of the dunes avoids two left hand bunkers but too long can catch the gorse right of the fairway. The large green has a bunker front left and is anything but flat.

9th Hole

Pan-Ko-Chai | Hole 10, 269 yards Too many theories to explain the name. At 269 yards it is a driveable risk/reward par 4 which deserves the stroke 18 index. If the wind is southerly the fairway bunker to the left comes into play but the drive to the green is inviting with the rising slope behind. Woolseners | Hole 11, 152 yards Named after the sandbank that can be seen from the green. A short par 3 of 152 yards but into the prevailing south westerly wind can be a real challenge. Deep pot bunkers front and right of the sloping green and a sneaky hidden bunker left make an accurate shot essential. Once on the green you have the full vista of the Solent and Isle of Wight. Desert | Hole 12, 462 yards In early years the hole was extremely sandy but now it is rightly the signature hole. At 462 yards it is a challenging par 4. The second shot to the green requires pinpoint accuracy as the green slopes away to the left-hand twin bunkers and dunes right catch the wayward shot. The stroke index 2 is well-deserved. 11th Hole

Widow I Hole 13, 340 yards Named after the large bunker which was grassed over after a tragic accident. A blind drive to the top of the hill must be straight to avoid steep slopes left and right of the fairway. A gentle shot over the brow of the hill, after you’ve looked at the Langstone Harbour boating scene, should run down to a fast green with a bunker left. Too hard and you’re off the back into the boundary fence.

13th Hole

Farm I Hole 14, 536 yards A tricky par 5 at 536 yards. A good drive towards the distant pole leaves the second shot clear of the water on the left. A wide fairway is bunkered left on the line to the green which is adjacent to more water. The green slopes away to the rear making it difficult to get close to a pin at the front. No gimmies on this green. Jacob’s Ladder I Hole 15, 424 yards Par 4 424 yards. The tee is adjacent to water where egrets and sometimes a kingfisher can be seen. The drive over the cutting can be challenging against a strong easterly wind. The gullyed fairway flatters shots to the green once the bunkers are cleared. Wharram I Hole 16, 180 yards Named after Dr Wharram Lamplough its designer. Tricky 180 yards par 3 with the large green set at angle to a green edge bunker just off the line to the flag. A tee shot left to avoid this bunker can leave a very long putt to a flag at the back.

Hole By HoleTour Sailor’s Grave I Hole 17, 452 yards Rumoured that a sailors body was found when the hole was constructed. 452 yards par 4 with the lake left and two bunkers left of the fairway which force drives right into the semi-rough. The long second shot to the green has to thread between greenside bunkers left and right.

17th Hole

Sinah I Hole 18, 381 yards Named after the land the course is on. At 381 yards not a difficult hole if your drive avoids the gorse either side of the fairway. The large green is bunkered either side and too strong a shot will reach the boundary fence at the rear.

Spare Hole I Hole 14a, 152 yards A spare hole for use when others are on maintenance. At 152 yards over the water and guarded by gorse to the right plus bunkers both sides it is an excellent extra to the course.

Members Golf All classes of members enjoy a very active and competitive programme of golf at Hayling. We have a wide variety of match teams for men, women and juniors. Teams compete in regional and inter-club matches and the Veterans have a very full programme of matches at home and away. As Hayling is an elite club the matches are played on some of the finest courses in the South of England. Saturday trophy and monthly medal competitions are very well supported throughout the year. And regular weekday competitions cater for the five-day members. In short there is social or competitive golf for all ages and abilities. Our annual Pro-Am tournament attracts professional and amateur players from a wide range of clubs around the South of England. We regularly host regional and county championships, along with Open events throughout the year which are always filled quickly. A very active junior section assisted by several dedicated members has produced some extremely good golfers with single figure handicaps, both boys and girls. Teams and individuals regularly represent the club in county, regional, and national events. We now operate a tee booking system, allowing members to plan their golf, knowing they can tee off at a specified time without the need to wait/queue on the tee. We have carefully limited membership numbers to ensure the course is not overloaded and members are able to play flexibly throughout the week. To ensure members have primacy over peak and popular tee times, any bookings for societies are primarily booked on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and matches

are primarily booked after midday and avoid Fridays and Saturdays where possible. However, our best gauge for tee availability is our experienced Professional Shop staff, who are available 7-days a week. Ladies Golf The Hayling Ladies Golf Club, founded in 1884, is a club within a club. Although represented on the main club committee the ladies have their own committee which arranges matches with other clubs, controls the ladies’ handicaps, and manages competitions for lady members. Thursday is Ladies Day at Hayling and is well supported but weekend competitions are also available and open to those who cannot play during the week. The lady members play an active part in the arrangement of the many club tournaments and social activities.

Visitors & Societies The standard and quality of our links course, combined with its location and facilities make it a unique and special golf club, attracting visitors from far afield. As the only true links course between Rye in Kent and Saunton Sands in Devon many golfers from heathland and parkland courses travel significant distances to play it. ‘We never close’ as we are such a fast draining course, ensuring year round playability especially during the winter months.

Regular skin checking will help you get to know your skin and catch anything early, making it easier to treat. Type of skin cancer: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) & squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) These are the most common forms of skin cancer, which arise within the top layer of the skin, appearing anywhere, but mostly on sun exposed sites. BCC: usually slow growing, a pinkish bump that can bleed and scab. SCC: usually quick growing, a thickened scaly, or red ulcerated bump that can be painful and bleed.

Melanoma This is less common, but much more dangerous. If left, the cells can grow deeper into the skin and travel to different areas of the body.

How to perform a skin check: Once a month, examine your skin in a well-lit area, noting all moles, marks and spots, charting the location, appearance, and dimensions of each. Taking pictures can be helpful, as can the help of ‘another’ for those ‘hardto-see’ places: 1.

2. Bend elbows and check forearms, back of upper arms and palms. 3. Check backs of legs, feet, spaces between toes, soles of feet, and nails. 4. Examine back of neck, part hair to check scalp using a mirror or torch. 5. Carefully check your back and buttocks. If you spot anything new and/or changing, whether coloured or not, bleeding, crusty or itchy, contact your GP IMMEDIATELY.

The Clubhouse The Clubhouse was rebuilt in 2002 and is located only yards from the original one-storey clubhouse built over 100 years before. The ‘Art Deco’ style, a refinement of the old clubhouse, is the envy of many clubs. The location, with panoramic views over the course, beach and coastline, is spectacular. The first-floor lounge, restaurant, and bar have large windows through 270 degrees, surrounded by a large wrap around balcony with ample seating which is a delight in sunny weather. There is disabled access throughout with wide doorways and a lift. Clubhouse Facilities Sandeman Bar & Restaurant The bar and restaurant are open 7-days a week. A fully stocked bar is open to members, guests, and visitors. The open licence eliminates the usual club restrictions. Hayling Golf Club is proud of the excellent catering facilities, with early morning golfer’s breakfasts, a full menu throughout the day, daily specials and evening dining events there is a choice for all tastes, all of which is freshly prepared by the dedicated chefs. Sunday lunch is especially popular and we recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment. The kitchen and

Events & Activities Hayling Golf Club has close to 1000 members, both golf and social, with the Club catering for all members, through the numerous golf and social events planned throughout the year for all to enjoy. These activities are very well supported and are open to guests. GOLF 7-Day members enjoy weekly competitions, made up of monthly medal competitions, trophy competitions and club knockouts, played both during the week and at weekends. 5-day and Veteran members enjoy a varied selection of golf competitions throughout the week. Mixed matches against many local clubs are especially popular, and casual golf ensures that the course is used throughout the year.

SOCIAL Regular social events are held throughout the year. Some are formally celebrating dates such as Founders Day and Trafalgar Day but many are simpler occasions to enjoy a great dining experience with some fabulous entertainment, including the themed Summer Ball and New Years Eve Ball, along with Bistro Nights, Gourmet Dining Evenings, Burger Kitchen Nights, BBQ Nights, Posh Fish & Chip Nights, along with the weekly Sunday Lunches which are highly popular. The Professional Shop Hayling Golf Club has its own PGA Professional team. Mark Treleaven, the club head professional, has been attached to Hayling Golf Club for 30 years, first as a junior member, then a full member, and now as the head professional appointed in 2008. He is assisted by Peter Horner and Jon Barnes, both of whom are fully qualified PGA professionals.

The Professional Shop A well-stocked shop offers a wide range of well-known brands of equipment and clothing. As a member of the Foremost golf buying group the prices are competitive. Custom club fitting, repairs, and re-gripping services are all part of the service. Tee bookings for visitors and societies are managed from the Professional Shop and although a formal tee booking system is not in operation visitors are advised when play is available.

Society days are managed from the Professional Shop, with a personalised service on offer. We can provide prizes, nearest the pin and longest drive markers, prepare scorecards, arrange for registration and prize tables as needed, provide space for advertising material on the day, and are happy to accommodate any other requests you may have to make your day memorable.

How to find us DIRECTIONS From the west or east travelling on the A27 make for the junction with a turn onto the A3023 south for Hayling Island. After two miles take the right fork at the roundabout signposted to Ferry Point and Sinah Warren. Follow the road for 1.4 miles to a roundabout by the amusement park and turn right on Sea Front for 0.8 miles to the left turn into Links Lane and the Club.
