History The History of High Elms can be traced back to the Norman invasion of 1066 when it was part of the huge estates given by William the Conqueror to his brother, Bishop Odo of Bayeux, in recognition of the part he played in helping win the Battle of Hastings. For successive generations afterwards the land the golf course now occupies was given over to farming, while it has also been home to country houses, a granary that can still be seen from the golf course - a mansion, ice wells, a racecourse, an Eton fives court and a cricket pitch. While it has been held and developed by a number of owners throughout its history, it was in 1938 that it was sold to Kent County Council. For many years the land and building were used as a nurses’ training centre before, in 1965, the entire estate was transferred to the London Borough of Bromley and 6 |
the land given over in perpetuity to the public as a Green Belt Open Space. Two years later, the mansion on its grounds tragically burned to the ground, however, the terraces were preserved and can still be seen today to the left of the first fairway. Bromley Borough turned the 150 acres that formally comprised Clockhouse Farm into an 18 hole public golf course, and the golf club that was formed there has grown enormously. Before the convenience of advance booking of tee-times, there was no alternative but to queue - often for several hours - if you wanted to play golf at High Elms. Although the course was relatively new, High Elms became increasingly popular with local golfers in the late 1960s. So much so that a group of dedicated golfers would queue in the
car park from midnight on Friday and Saturday night to make sure of getting a game the following morning. It was during these midnight vigils the decision was made to form High Elms Golfing Society.
Margaret Stewart was the first lady golfer to attend a committee meeting in 1974 and she became the first lady captain with Joan Brown as secretary. Over the next few years, support from the London Borough of Bromley began to grow.
An informal meeting was arranged at a pub in Locksbottom in July 1969 shortly after the new clubhouse was opened where James Worden volunteered to “do the groundwork” and a formal meeting was held on September 2nd to elect officials and decide subscriptions.
The Mayor was invited to become the club’s president and attended the prize giving at the annual dinner dance - a tradition that has continued to the present day.
The first club president (and captain) was James Flynn with James Worden as secretary. John Baker took responsibility for writing the rules and constitution. The “subs” were set at ten shillings and affiliation to the National Association of Public Golf Courses was sought immediately.
During the 70s, High Elms became an active member of the National Association of Public & Proprietary Golf Courses (NAPGC), successfully taking part in several national competitions.

History Continued In 1984 Jean and Keith Andrews took responsibility for membership and men’s handicaps, turning a rather haphazard system into an efficient and up-to-date computerised database which served the club’s 450 members. A membership drive by Daphne Stacey in 1984 attracted a number of new ladies. She arranged group lessons and evening “fun” competitions, which helped introduce them to competitive golf. Another important section of the club was also established - High Elms Seniors. Their number swelled to 120 and a regular programme of competitions and social events was run by the committee. The 90s saw many improvements to our facilities, provided through the London Borough of Bromley. Special club times were allocated, the changing rooms, toilet and shower facilities had all
been completely refurbished and capital expenditure on the course paid handsome dividends. Recent course and clubhouse improvements have been made and ambitious future plans are in the pipeline to make High Elms one of the finest public golf courses in the country and a place of natural beauty to be enjoyed by future generations. There are many individuals who have, in one way or another, contributed to the growth and success of High Elms Golf Course over the years. Only a small number have been mentioned by name but we pay tribute to our founder members, thank all our past and present club officials and remember with affection those members who sadly are no longer here with us.

About the Course A par 71 (SS70) and par 72 (SS72) for ladies, High Elms Golf Course measures 6,221 yards from the white tees and features many tree-lined fairways and strategically placed greenside bunkers which call for accurate driving and well-placed iron shots.
It may only be a 224 yard, par three from the white tees but, with out of bounds to the left and right and over three bunkers to the green, this uphill hole means that although it is stroke index two on the men’s card, many believe it to be the hardest hole on the course.
With its large variety of mature trees and excellent layout, High Elms is a public course of outstanding character and quality.
Of the easier holes, the 2nd, 3rd and 11th should all be par fours for the taking but stray from the straight and narrow and a bogey five or worse will be waiting.
Apart from the normal mental challenges of golf, High Elms Golf Course gives you plenty of other things to think of; uphill and downhill lies, sidehill lies, dog-legs and the 13th, unlucky for many regular players, and once voted Kent’s toughest par three.
Most regular players would agree that if you get a handicap at High Elms Golf Course, you will find other courses seem a lot easier and therefore players seem to play better than their handicap at other courses. Course Tour If you have never played at High Elms Golf Course before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour. Hole 1 - Par 4 - 371 Yards Fairway slopes right-to-left so try to keep your tee shot on the fairway, which will allow you a clear approach shot to the green. Avoid the greenside bunkers and watch out for the slopes at the back of the green. Hole 2 - Par 4 - 304 Yards Above all costs avoid the trees on the right; the very good and very brave can play over the top of the trees and get very near or even on the green. But more balls are lost in the trees than hit the green. Severe dog-leg right, play it simply and a par four can be easily achieved. 12 |
Hole 3 - Par 4 - 284 Yards A simple par four, if played sensibly. Another hole that is driveable with a good tee shot on the right line. If you play short of the big fairway bunker 49 yards short of the green, all you need is a chip up onto the green. Hole 4 - Par 4 - 443 Yards With out of bounds all the way down the left side of the fairway, it would be easy to say hit it right off the tee. But you have to avoid a small copse 150 yards from the tee and then play over a much larger one to approach the green. Five is not a bad score.
Hole 5 - Par 3 - 132 Yards Supposedly the second easiest hole on the course. Miss the green side bunkers and play to the middle of the green. You may have a long putt but that will be better than a long bunker shot. Don’t forget the bunker at the back right of the green, many people do.
Hole 7 - Par 4 - 399 Yards Tight driving hole dog-leg left-to-right, trees left and right. Any tee shot on the fairway close to the marker post gives you a chance to get on in regulation. Left side of the fairway gives better look at the green for your approach shot.
Hole 6 - Par 4 - 441 Yards Stroke index 1; you must avoid trees on the right-hand-side, although this is the tiger line, if you can work it over the trees and back to the fairway, cutting the dog-leg. Plenty of room left, but means a lot longer approach shot to the green.
Hole 8 - Par 3 - 200 Yards Downhill all the way, not much in the way except greenside bunkers. Over the green the ground drops away, making for a delicate chip from rough back onto the green.
| 13
Course Tour Continued Hole 9 - Par 5 - 548 Yards Longest hole on the course. You need to hit the ball up the right side and hope you land on a flat lie so the ball will remain on flat ground. Anything that hits the middle of the fairway will run down left. The longest hitters can reach it in two as the ground runs downhill towards the hole for the last 150 yards. Hole 10 - Par 4 - 367 Yards Fairway runs left-to-right on this hole, so a tee shot up the lefthand-side, avoiding out of bounds, will run back to the middle of the fairway. Trees on the right-hand-side await an errant shot. Avoid all bunkers on this hole and you will be left with a shot between 85 and 107 yards to the green. The two greenside bunkers are very steep and seem to gobble up any ball that is not quite perfect.
14 |
Hole 11 - Par 4 - 267 Yards Reachable par four if you can hit the ball straight, the green is protected by two bunkers and by the ground running away severely left-to-right. The safe shot is to play over the ridge, left side of fairway and a short iron approach to the green. Hole 12 - Par 5 - 477 Yards This hole runs right to left all the way downhill. Get a good drive away and you have a chance to get on for two. Play it safe and a par five should be yours for the taking. Only real trouble is the tee shot, which you must keep in play and out of trees. Hole 13 - Par 3 - 224 Yards Out of bounds left and right, three large bunkers in front of the green and 224 yards all uphill! Known as one of the top ten most difficult par three’s in Kent, play it short; chip up, two putts, take four and walk off happy.
Hole 14 - Par 4 - 426 Yards Huge dog-leg left-to-right, play safe to marker post, which leaves long shot downhill but straight at the green. If you play at the marker post do not go long as the ball will find thick rough. Take a look at the pin position on 18th whilst on the tee. Hole 15 - Par 4 - 302 Yards Uphill all the way, best to play to the right side of fairway to give yourself better angle to approach green. Anything left with your tee shot will leave a very difficult approach to the green and will bring the large greenside bunker and tree into play. Hole 16 - Par 3 - 158 Yards Downhill all the way, green protected by two bunkers, otherwise no real trouble unless you are a long way off-line.
Hole 17 - Par 4 - 400 Yards Tee off through a narrow tunnel of trees to the fairway, anything hit left will end up on the road to Farnborough Village. Safe shot is a left-to-right, making sure to avoid the trees. A good tee shot will reward you with a straight approach to the green and a sense of relief. Hole 18 - Par 5 - 478 Yards Nearly finished, after 17 holes the last thing you want is a long walk uphill, well that’s what you’ve got. Avoid out of bounds all down the left-hand-side, although this only comes into play with the tee shot. The fairway needs to be hit if you want to make the green in three shots.

Custom Fitting There has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess. Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes. The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing. This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics.
Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at High Elms and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of products all available for custom fitting. This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking. Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise. Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores.

FootGolf Exactly as the name implies, FootGolf is a crazy mix of football and golf played over a purpose built course. Incorporating the precision, power and passion found in both sports, FootGolf combines two of the most popular sports in the world to create one amazing playing experience. The object of the game is to get the ball into the hole using only your feet in the fewest number of shots possible. However, the beauty of the game lies in your being able to strategically combine power and precision every time you step onto the course. FootGolf is great fun for everyone that enjoys a game of football or even a competitive bit of fun with mates - you don’t even have to like golf!
Played in groups of up to eight players, it’s great fun for colleagues after a tiring day in the office, something a little different to try with the rest of your football team or even for a children’s birthday party. Balls are provided although you can bring your own if you prefer. FootGolf is available all week from 11am, with the option of playing 9 or 18 holes and, when 12 or more participate, the organiser goes free. You can just turn up and play subject to availability, however, as FootGolf is becoming an increasingly popular sport, booking is advisable. For more information or to book a time please call 01689 858175 or email highelms@mytimeactive.co.uk | 33

High Elms Festival of Golf We know we have something special here at High Elms Golf Course and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before. One of the ways in which we do this is by staging a festival of golf, in conjuntion with Mytime Active, open to members of all clubs. The week starts off with the Seniors stableford for men aged 60 and over, before the Ladies Team take to the course on Thursday for an 18 hole stableford event with teams of three.
The events are open to all those that have a recognised and current handicap and meet the qualifying conditions for each competition. If you would like to take part in any of the competitions, you can download the relevant entry form from our website, www.hegc.org Event dates may vary slightly from year to year, but you will find details of the event formats on our website, together with information about entry costs and what will be provided.
The Men’s Team event, a stableford for teams of four, is held on the Friday before the Mixed Greensomes 18 hole stableford to start the weekend. The week culminates with the Men’s and Women’s Open on the Sunday where the High Elms Cup is fiercely competed for. | 45
