HISTORY
T
he John O’Gaunt Golf Club has a long and In 1928, following numerous meetings of about 70 local Towards the end of the war members of the Mid Beds rich history, though its origins are often the townsmen and women, a 9 hole course was laid out at Golf Club became interested in a property known as the south end of Biggleswade Common with frontage to Sutton Park, previously owned by the Burgoyne family topic of debate. Potton Road, and became known as the ‘Mid Beds Golf Club.’ Golf continued to be played on the common until around 1947. During the Second World War, the War Department put three of the holes under the plough, and put ditches on the other six to hinder aircraft from landing.

and originally by John O’Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. It had been requisitioned and used by the Army throughout the war, but was now possibly coming onto the market. The property had been known for its immaculate drives, gardens and lawns but unfortunately, along with the mansion, the estate had suffered great dilapidation.
The park itself was originally designed in the mid-18th century by Humphrey Repton, a contemporary of famous landscape architect Capability Brown. Repton’s designs where renowned for their avenues of lime trees, many of which remain in part today.
Around 1947 the estate was bought in its dilapidated state for the princely sum of ÂŁ5000, with money obtained from all sorts of fund raising activities. Consequently a holding company was formed to arrange finance for Sutton Park and to invite members and others to take out shares, which many did.

HISTORY CONTINUED The Holding Company owned the property consisting of the house and 145 acres. They allowed the club to develop the course and partly repair and alter the house. The first nine holes of the course were designed by a Mr W. G. Groves, a scratch golfer from Leighton Buzzard. The second nine holes were designed by Mr Hawtree, who subsequently designed the Carthagena Course.
In a 1981 paper written by Mr F.C. Levitt, a past Club President of John O`Gaunt Golf Club, he noted that the naming of the club caused some conflict amongst the committee at that time. It was only after much deliberation and argument that the committee decided in view of the John O`Gaunt connections with Sutton Park and the House of Burgoyne, that the club should be named ‘The John O’Gaunt Golf Club.’
Ever since, the course and club has maintained its warm and welcoming environment for all, and now in our 67th year the John O’Gaunt Golf Club are proud to bear the name of the former estate owner and Duke of Lancaster.

About The Course
C
ut through parkland, the John O’Gaunt Golf Club has a wonderfully British feel and design, boasting two full eighteen hole courses – the 6,505 yard John O’Gaunt and the 5,791 yard Carthagena, from the white tees. Each course poses a different challenge; with an abundance of natural streams and hazards all defined by the tree lined parkland setting. We’re sure you’ll come away from John O’Gaunt impressed by the condition of both courses. Certainly, there’s nothing to beat it in the area, ranked as the best golf course in the county by renowned website Top 100 Golf Courses.
Lined with mature trees, the John O’Gaunt stretches out across the gentle undulating Bedfordshire landscape. In fact, the beauty of the course can be deceptive, and many visitors describe the course as a ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’, as it often proves tougher than it looks, ranked at par 71, course SSS off the white tees is 72. Carthagena is the sister course of John O’Gaunt and is a little shorter, but no less challenging, ranked as a par 69. The Carthagena is kept in wonderful condition all year round, and benefits from extremely well drained fairways and greens.
Together the John O’Gaunt and the Carthagena present an excellent venue for golfers of all abilities. Try not to get too distracted by the lush, well-manicured fairways with your shots from the tee, and be prepared to face some well-protected greens often with testing pin positions. And even if your score ends up a little higher than expected, you will walk off the course having enjoyed the peace and tranquillity offered by these unique courses.

Course Tour
I
f you have never played at John O’Gaunt before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait, and how to avoid them, by following our holeby-hole tour – yardage is from the white tees and match the current match scorecards.
The John O’Gaunt Course Hole 1- Par 4 – 288 Yards A straightforward tee shot, with either a long iron or fairway wood, is the best approach to begin your round on The John O’Gaunt. This is a nice gentle opening hole that wanders from left to right, but get out of position from the tee and this short hole can prove troublesome. Hole 2 – Par 4 – 417 Yards On this par 4 long hitters beware. A straight tee shot is needed as the hole has trouble both left and right in the shape of strategically positioned trees and bunkers. The hole doglegs from left to right and has a fall and rise to the fairway from tee to green,
12 | www.johnogauntgolfclub.co.uk
Hole 3 – Par 4 – 368 Yards Players have a number of options from the tee on this hole. A shot played to the top of the hill will leave a longer second shot to a well-guarded green, which is well below the fairway. Longer hitters may try and hit over the hill but can find it tough as this fairway narrows the further you hit from the tee. Hole 4 – Par 3 – 173 Yards First of only three par 3s on the John O’Gaunt course. Judgement of distance is vital on this hole as the wonderful Mackenzie green, with the tier from back to front, can make putting very tricky. The green is slightly
raised and beautifully bunkered, but finding this target is no easy task. Hole 5 – Par 4 – 445 Yards Your tee shot is just the start of a very tough stretch. The tee shot is played from an elevated teeing ground to a tight fairway, so staying slightly right is best. This ensures you avoid the large conifer standing down the left hand side of the fairway, for a clearer second shot.
Hole 6 – Par 4 – 469 Yards Though only a par 4 this is technically the hardest hole on the course. The hole doglegs severely from left to right, but as the dogleg doesn’t begin until you are some 240 yards from the tee, there is no chance of cutting the corner. Hole 7 – Par 4 – 327 Yards The raised tee gives you a look at the very narrow fairway. Length is of no benefit here as missing this fairway can lead to all sorts of trouble. The green is set high above the fairway surrounded by trees and bunkers, a small target to find.
Hole 8 – Par 45 – 380 Yards From the tee, with bunkers to the right and trees to the left, accuracy is paramount. More bunkers protect the green, but the approach shot can be helped by a green that slopes from the left. Hole 9 – Par 5 – 502 Yards The first of only two par 5s on the John O’Gaunt, Hole 9 sweeps from left to right and the approach is all uphill. Longer hitters may reach the oak by the left hand side of the fairway, making the green in range. However, beware the new bunker to catch the long drive on the left.
www.johnogauntgolfclub.co.uk | 13
Course Tour CONTINUED Hole 10 – Par 3 – 188 Yards Signature hole of the course and the second par 3. Plays 188 yards from the back tee, players must ensure enough club is taken as bunkers await any under hit shot. In addition, the right hand side is protected by a large tree. A par here is always welcomed. Hole 11 – Par 4 – 352 Yards Short par 4 that doglegs from right to left. Players can choose to lay up short of the bunkers and leave a longer approach shot. The longer hitters may drive over the bunkers and leave only a short approach.
Hole 12 – Par 4 – 328 Yards With a well-positioned fairway bunker on this narrow fairway, this hole demands accuracy and thought from the tee. The fairway bottlenecks towards a narrow two-tiered green with bunkers ready to welcome anything wayward. Hole 13 – Par 4 –455 Yards With the brook coming into play off both the tee and near the green, the hole has the potential to be a real card wrecker. The ideal line is down the left side as this is the shorter carry over the brook and opens up the green. Trees and the brook protect the elevated green to the right hand side, along with water at the back of the green, so be sure to select the right club.
14 | www.johnogauntgolfclub.co.uk
Hole 14 – Par 4 – 349 Yards Off the tee on this swinging left to right dogleg, make sure you avoid the well-positioned fairway bunker. The green is sloping and approach uphill, so take one club more than you think for your approach to avoid the large bunker guarding the right side of the green. Hole 15 – Par 4 – 427 Yards The tree-lined fairway provides a tough target to hit, and as it sweeps from right to left, longer hitters must shape their tee shots to the left to hit the fairway. At over 420 yards it’s a tough hole: two bunkers protect a long narrow green.
Hole 16 – Par 3 – 153 Yards On this pretty little par 3 only a short iron is required to hit a well-bunkered green. Hit the wrong part of the green, however, and a 3 putt may ensue, as the viciously sloping green offers great protection for this short par 3. Hole 17 – Par 5 – 478 Yards Relatively short par 5 still provides a tough test. The green is surrounded by a dry moat which, if found, provides a testing chip shot onto the green, which itself is one of the most subtle on the course.
Hole 18 – Par 4 – 406 Yards This is a cracking finishing hole which swings from right to left. A solid tee shot is essential to avoid the large plane tree and bunkers on the right, and more trees on the left. The approach to the green is impressive with the clubhouse looking on, but don’t be fooled, as it plays uphill again – so take a club more than you may think. Avoid the bunkers left and right and roll the putt in to finish your round in style! Finish with a gross or nett par here and you will walk off the course happy.
The green is surrounded by a dry moat which, if found, provides a testing chip shot onto the green

Course Tour CONTINUED The Carthagena Course
The Carthagena Course
Hole 1- Par 4 – 389 Yards At nearly 400 yards and usually playing into the prevailing wind, this is a tough opening to the Carthagena. There is out of bounds left and trees right to punish any wayward tee shot. The green is well protected by a couple of large bunkers; a par here is a good start to the round.
Hole 3 – Par 4 – 305 Yards A short par 4 which offers a choice of options. The longer hitter may take on the gorse and bunkers and go for the green, while the more conservative approach would be to take a long iron or fairway wood and leave a straightforward approach.
Hole 2 – Par 3 – 164 Yards With out of bounds on the left, club selection is crucial on the first of five par 3s. The green is well protected by three bunkers to the left, right and short, but once on, the large humpback green provides for an interesting experience on the putting surface.
Hole 4 – Par 4 – 286 Yards Trees left and right funnel in towards the green on another relatively short par 4. Though the green is well-guarded by two large bunkers, this is a good birdie opportunity, but be sure to check the pin position as the approach can be tricky!
16 | www.johnogauntgolfclub.co.uk
Hole 5 – Par 4 – 422 Yards Big hitters relish Hole 5, which at over 400 yards is a challenging hole. The longer hitters may carry the fairway bunker, but are likely to still be punished by a large group of conifers to the right and gorse to the left. The approach is uphill to a very narrow green, again with bunkers left and right, so choose your club wisely. Hole 6 – Par 3 – 154 Yards Though relatively short and well bunkered, with a large putting surface this is a real gem of a par 3. The green slopes sharply from back to front so it’s important not to leave the ball above the hole.
Hole 7 – Par 4 – 460 Yards A popular favourite on the Carthagena, this is a super par 4 which meanders gently from left to right, before descending to a large two tiered green. For any longer hitters who avoid the gorse and the trees, the tricky green and two large bunkers can scupper a par. Hole 8 – Par 3 – 150 Yards The elevated but sheltered tee position can lead to problems with club selection at this deceptive par 3. Get it right and par is guaranteed, but misjudge it and four bunkers lie in wait.
Hole 9 – Par 4 – 378 Yards Tight driving hole, with fairway bunkers and trees in play. If the fairway is successfully negotiated a long narrow green with subtle borrows await, again four bunkers surround the green to penalise any wayward approach.
With out of bounds on the left, club selection is crucial on the first of five par 3s
www.johnogauntgolfclub.co.uk | 17
Course Tour CONTINUED Hole 10 – Par 5 – 479 Yards If you can find the fairway with your tee shot, this first par 5 offers a good chance at a birdie. The hole moves from right to left, and the well-positioned bunker and trees down the left side often catch a drive anything less than perfect. Near the green bunkers left and mounds to the right can make any approach tricky. Hole 11 – Par 3 – 178 Yards A well-struck and accurate tee shot is required here as both approach and green slope towards left hand bunkers. Par here is always well received.
Hole 12 – Par 4 – 338 Yards This is a deceivingly right to left dogleg par 4. The longer hitters may drive over the corner and leave only a short approach. A safer option is to take less club off the tee and leave a longer approach. The green sits at a slight angle which can prove awkward. Hole 13 – Par 3 – 216 Yards The Carthagena’s toughest par 3, plays over 200 yards and mostly downhill. Five bunkers capture anything mishit, and guard a large green that is over 100ft long from front to back. There is a little more room to the right, but don’t be surprised with a bogey here. Often the overconfident end up over par.
18 | www.johnogauntgolfclub.co.uk
Hole 14 – Par 4 – 299 Yards Another short par 4 which is driveable for longer hitters who are happy to take on the left hand trees. Hitting the fairway leaves only a short iron approach and a good birdie chance. But watch out for the slope if the pin is at the back. Hole 15 – Par 4 – 359 Yards While this is the only hole on the course with no bunkers it is still a challenge, with a sweeping right to left dogleg. Large trees guard the left side of the fairway and more to the right to catch any sliced tee shot.
Hole 16 – Par 4 – 399 Yards The signature hole of the course and at nearly four hundred yards, the last thing you want to do is hit an iron off the tee. For the majority of golfers a well-struck shot towards the tree at the end of the fairway is best. From this tree, the hole descends some 170 more yards to a two tiered green, surrounded by trees and bunkers. A truly memorable hole, if sometimes not for the right reasons, it has the potential to be a real card wrecker!
Hole 17 – Par 4 – 336 Yards Another super driving hole, longer hitters may take on the oak on the corner of the dogleg. Shorter hitters should be avoiding the trees right and left setting themselves up for a challenging uphill approach to a viciously sloping green.
Hole 18 – Par 5 – 479 Yards Drawing the Carthagena to a close is a fantastic par 5. The drive is tough, with the hole itself sloping from right to left, so there are occasions when a good drive may end up in the left hand rough. The approach to the green is all uphill to a two-tier green, making club selection crucial. More bunkers surround the green making it a spectacular finish to a deceptively tough course.

The Clubhouse he John O’Gaunt clubhouse offers a warm and welcoming environment for members and visitors, whether you are playing golf or just meeting friends for lunch or coffee.
T
Following a fire in 1825, which destroyed the original mansion house belonging to Sir John Burgoyne, a new mansion house was completed in 1859. This is the very clubhouse used by our members today.
On 17th March 1989 our wonderful Burgoyne Suite was opened for the first time by Club President Cyril Rose. The event, and the Burgoyne Suite itself, represented the culmination of the great efforts of the General Committee.
With panoramic views and a relaxed atmosphere, it is the perfect place to recline and enjoy the ambience.
The aura of antiquity remains and the clubhouse has been tastefully altered and refurbished to provide modern and luxurious facilities.
Work was carried out on alternations to the bar and the sun lounge extension in 1990. This was financed by an interest free loan from the local Greene King brewery, which stipulated that the loan would remain interest free if purchases in the bar consistently exceeded a certain level. This arrangement proved extremely successful and over the five years of repayment, no interest was ever paid.

The Clubhouse CONTINUED In 2006 the late Cyril Rose opened a massive renovation to the existing clubhouse, which cost the club just over a million pounds. The old footprint of the building was extended and the changing rooms were rejuvenated to their current, exceptional condition.
The clubhouse provides a comfortable space to unwind before or after your round, to have a few at the bar, or a more substantial meal in the restaurant. Whatever your plans are, the John O’Gaunt clubhouse has something for everyone.
The clubhouse boasts first class facilities for members as well as those visiting the club for the first time. There are spacious and comfortable changing rooms, a comprehensive Pro Shop, and a spacious sun lounge offering unrivalled views of the John O’ Gaunt Golf course.
In the clubhouse dining areas our chefs serve hot and cold snacks every day of the week, with a Chef ’s specials board updated daily using fresh local produce in a selection of wholesome, home cooked dishes. Most Sundays the club offers a traditional roast lunch. Due to the popularity of the set menus and carveries we advise booking well in advance.
We are fully licensed with a selection of draught and speciality bottled beers, wines, and spirits, alongside an extensive range of soft drinks. Here at John O’Gaunt customer service is paramount to everything we do, and we pride ourselves on ensuring our accommodating staff make your visit to John O’Gaunt a memorable one.
