E Welcome
stablished in 1894, Lansdown Golf Club is a private members club situated on the outskirts of the beautiful Georgian City of Bath.
The superbly conditioned parkland course, originally designed by Harry Colt, is built on the southerly edge of the Cotswold escarpment. The 6,394-yard, par 71 course with a slope rating of 124 has something to challenge golfers of all abilities. Built on a plateau, it is a pleasurable walk with no hills to negotiate and is an ideal venue for visiting golfers and societies large and small. Drainage is excellent so the course stays open and dry all year round. On a fine day there are breath taking views over the Bristol Channel to the Brecon Beacons.
The clubhouse itself offers a 19th bar, a spacious lounge and restaurant and a large patio overlooking the 1st tee. The club is renowned for its friendly, welcoming atmosphere in which golfers, social members, guests and visitors can unwind. Lansdown Golf Club is a “Community Amateur Sports Club” so is run very much for the benefit of its members and the local community. The Club is Safe Golf accredited for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people as well as adults at risk for a safe and positive golf experience. We work hard to ensure we provide everyone with a fantastic service so come and see what makes us special.

G
olf at Lansdown was initially conceived in July 1894 at a meeting chaired by Sir Henry Lawrence, great grandfather of our current President. A few months later it was decided to build a 9 hole links. If successful, the Lawrence family agreed to provide further land for additional holes.
Brockham End, an area now heavily wooded but then treeless and exposed, was the location of a woodman’s cottage; the original clubhouse. However, at that time there was no driveway, thus access required a long walk. 1907 saw the woodman’s replaced with country cottages; one of the two cottages near the 1st tee was provided as a clubhouse. Subscriptions at this time were £1.05 p (1 guinea).
History 6
In 1906 the course was extended to 18 holes with the 11th, 12th and 13th holes being in the valley of Pipley Bottom, while the greens were fenced with barbed wire to prevent damage from livestock.
www.lansdowngolfclub.co.uk
In 1909 the cottage clubhouse was reluctantly given up and a clubhouse was built in a more accessible position on the site of the present clubhouse. This rebuild necessitated an alteration to the links. A considerable amount of the land was leased from the Blathwayt Estate, which gave the opportunity for the course to be lengthened. In 1924 Lansdown Golf Club was able to buy the land upon which the clubhouse still stands along with the gardens and drive for £105.
Since those early days, Lansdown Golf Club has gone from strength to strength and is now established as one of the best members’ clubs in the area. Although our roots go back a long way, Lansdown today is a modern, forward-thinking club where all members enjoy the same rights and freedom to contribute to our continuing success into the future. The club has been affiliated to the Gloucestershire Golf Union since 1961 and, over the years, has been proud to host some of the most prestigious regional and national events.

Club Crest
T
he griffin crest of Lansdown Golf Club stems from the armorial bearing of the Grenville family.
The griffin can be seen on the top of the monument to Sir Bevill Grenville, which stands a few hundred yards from the golf course, on the site of the Battle of Lansdown (1643).
Erected in 1714, the monument was dedicated to Sir Bevill Grenville slain in the battle supporting the Royal cause of Charles 1st. The griffin crest is believed to date back to Richard de Grenville, a distant relative of Sir Bevill Grenville. Richard de Grenville had Dukedoms conferred following his part in the invasion of England in 1066 with William the Conqueror.

I Course Tour
f you have never played Lansdown before you are in for a treat. Although the course is flat and easy for walking, there are plenty of challenges out there. Our hole-by-hole tour will give you an idea of what to expect and help you plan your way around.
Hole 1 - Par 5 - 485 Yards A par five to start that demands a straight tee shot to a tree-lined fairway, with out of bounds to the right. The fairway bunkers are cleverly located to catch slightly errant shots, but a large and fairly flat green provides a gentle introduction to the round.
Hole 2 - Par 4 - 410 Yards A dog-leg right par four with two fairway bunkers down the right to catch the shorter hitter. An accurate approach with a mid to long iron is required to a fairly narrow and closely bunkered green. Hole 3 - Par 4 - 368 Yards This hole requires a straight tee shot with out of bounds to the left and right. An accurate tee shot leaves a short iron approach to a green protected by bunkers left and right. With gorse and shrubs at the rear of the green, long is not a option.
www.lansdowngolfclub.co.uk
11
Course Tour
Hole 4 - Par 4 - 295 Yards
Hole 6 - Par 4 - 471 Yards
A short par four that should provide a good birdie opportunity or an easy par for those who play safe. However, with woods down the left, trees down the right and rough encroaching into a narrow fairway in the landing zone, this hole has wrecked many a scorecard.
The toughest and for some the best hole on the course. The drive is to a fairway that narrows to some 20 yards wide with out of bounds to the left for the first 250 yards. The fairway bends slightly to the right with a bunker 60 yards short of the green that will be difficult to carry for all but the best players. With a deep bunker to the right of an undulating green – five is a good score.
Hole 5 - Par 3 - 141 Yards A short par three which requires you to play from Somerset into Gloucestershire. The tee shot is played over undulating ground for the first 80 yards, a sunken track with steep banks and a wall that partially obscures the green. The putting surface is bordered by fields to the left, right and rear all of which are out of bounds. Hit the green and enjoy the fine view down the valley to your left.
Hole 7 - Par 4 - 328 Yards A slight dog-leg right with trees narrowing the fairway 200 yards out. The green is fairly small and pear shaped with a narrow entrance, a bunker to the right and grass mounds to the left and rear divert a less than accurate approach.

Hole 8 - Par 3 - 195 Yards
Hole 10 - Par 3 - 141 Yards
A beautiful looking par three, with a tree-lined fairway and out of bounds to the left and right. The narrow two-tiered green is well protected with two bunkers in front and two more to the rear, left and right.
A relatively short par three played from a raised tee, to a shaped green guarded by three bunkers. The easiest hole on the course, however, miss the green and your short game will be severely tested.
Hole 9 - Par 5 - 538 Yards
A straight par four with no real trouble apparent from the tee. However, if the wind is from the south west it can bring the practice ground, which is out of bounds, very much into play. A good drive leaves a lengthy approach shot where landing short is better than being long.
Not a bunker in sight, however there is out of bounds to the right for the first 370 yards of this hole. With the wind behind, the longer hitters will be going for the green with their second shot, whilst the average golfer will be hoping for a pitch and one putt to get that birdie. The green is a good size with bunkers front right and back left.
Hole 11 - Par 4 - 394 Yards

Hole 12 - Par 3 - 172 Yards
Hole 14 - Par 3 - 180 Yards
A challenging par three. The main feature is the two tier green, broad at the front and narrow at the back with bunkers to the front and side. The top tier has steep banks at the rear and sides that will severely punish anyone taking on a back flag.
An interesting par three to a sunken, undulating green. Out of bounds to the right makes this a tough hole, especially if the prevailing wind is blowing hard. Enjoy spectacular views of the City of Bristol and the Severn valley, with the Welsh mountains and the Brecon Beacons as a backdrop on a clear day.
Hole 13 - Par 5 - 525 Yards The fairway dog-legs to the right about 190 yards from the tee. The “Tiger” line is across the dog-leg, but get it wrong and you are in the woods and out of bounds. A corpse of trees to the left makes a good drive critical to making par or better.
Hole 15 - Par 5 - 531 Yards Start the journey back towards the clubhouse with a good par five. The beginning of the fairway is quite narrow with bunkers to the left and out of bounds to the right. The large sloping green has a narrow entrance and is guarded by bunkers either side.

Hole 16 - Par 4 - 361 Yards
Hole 18 - Par 4 - 467 Yards
A tight drive with a field to the right and several trees down the left. The fairway bunker will catch a well struck tee shot down the left. A medium sized green guarded by bunkers to the front, left and right means an accurate approach is paramount to create a good birdie chance.
A challenging par four finishing hole with a deceptively wide fairway lined by trees to the left and right. A fairway bunker 130 yards from the green means that any lay up has to be carefully placed with only the longest able to go for the green in two. The green itself is large with bunkers to the left and right. Make par here and the drink in the bar afterwards will taste that much sweeter.
Hole 17 - Par 4 - 392 Yards From the tee you drive across the race course road to a generous fairway with plantations to the left and right. A bunker to the left of the fairway at around 280 yards can catch the longest hitters. The green slopes gently away from the narrow entrance and is well protected with bunkers left and right.
