WELCOME Established in 1896, Maidenhead Golf Club is a mature course set in lovely rolling parkland where you can glimpse deer in the early morning and enjoy the peace and tranquility of a round of golf in this picturesque part of Berkshire. The course, measuring 6,338 yards off the championship tees, is a hidden gem in the heart of Maidenhead with watered fairways and excellent greens. While the layout provides an easy walk, it is a good test of golf requiring both course management and skill to complete successfully. As well as offering a challenging yet tranquil course, Maidenhead Golf www.maidenheadgolf.co.uk

Club also has a long history of hosting successful golf societies, private functions, lunches, golf days and events. Our offcourse facilities provide the perfect setting for any special occasion, offering both a spacious and comfortable environment to meet your required needs. We provide everything that a golfer would expect at a well-established club. The Pro Shop is stocked with a full range of equipment and clothing, whilst offering expert tuition, providing you every opportunity to work on your game and lower your scores and handicap. Whether you are a Member or Visitor, you will be welcomed into the

Club by our attentive and friendly staff, ensuring your time with us is memorable, and also somewhere you look forward to returning to! The club’s proximity to the town provides very easy access from the station, which is no more than a five-minute walk away, or by road, with the A4, M4 and M40 all passing nearby. Despite this, once you are on the course, you could be in the middle of rural England. We have an active Membership and welcome both Visitors and Societies come along and see for yourself.

History Maidenhead Golf Club was formed in 1896, with several senior Brigade of Guards Officers and several Naval Officers including the son of the Earl of Orkney being among its founder members. Two Maidonians were also among the torchbearers for golf in the town, Mr T J Wootton and Dr G E Moore. It was the latter’s friendship with Mr W H Grenfell which really got the project off the ground. Mr Grenfell, was the Mayor of Maidenhead in 1895 and 1896 and an extremely wealthy and competent businessman who owned more than 10,000 acres of land around the town.

6 |

So it was that Mr Grenfell offered to lease some of his acreage near to Maidenhead Railway Station, which was to become our home and remains so well into a second century. Mr Grenfell was one of the earliest 63 Members of the club, became its first President and agreed to present “a challenge cup for competition”. This was the fine Grenfell Cup which is still in yearly competition.

golf club had a President who had so many and various achievements. For example, he ran a mile in 4 minutes 37 seconds, rowed for Oxford against Cambridge in the famous dead-heat race of 1877 and stroked a rowing eight across the Channel. To add that he swam across the Niagara River below the Falls and then repeated the feat a second time when someone doubted it, shows he was a man who “did” things.

W H Grenfell, later to become Lord Desborough, was quite a character and an international athlete in cricket, running, rowing, punting, swimming, fencing, tennis and wrestling! No other

The course was opened for play on December 12, 1896, with the Club also hosting a champagne luncheon on the same day to mark the occasion in its fine new clubhouse.

The course was opened for play on December 12, 1896

A separate nine-hole course for ladies only was built in 1897 on the left side of the current first hole, but the ladies did not like it and the area was closed in 1907, losing a valuable acreage from the total available to the Club in later leases. The Club found itself in difficulty in the early years in particular because of the terms of the lease, which stated that the lessor had the power “to take portions of the land that he may require for building…making railways or any other purpose of the kind.”

www.maidenheadgolf.co.uk

Over the years land has been taken from multiple parts of the ‘original’ course, such as; in the early parts of the 20th Century land was taken from the 17th and 18th holes; the original 14th green and 15th tee was forfeited after Members chose not to buy the land, yet they did negotiate a new longer lease to secure the long-term future of the Club. The first Professional at our Club was Alex Simpson, a Scot from Forfar who was extremely skilled in the making of golf clubs. Club minutes record that he was also able to play golf on our newly

created course against the well-known professionals J H Taylor, and James Braid and George Pearson in a golf match on 19 March, 1898. Taylor, a renowned golf course architect, advised on additional bunkers. There were complete ranges of bunkers usually about six feet high above the surface of the fairway on some holes in the 1920s.

cont.

Deciding that this was removing some of the enjoyment from their game, Members then set up a de-bunkering committee to remove some of the hazards, no doubt encouraged by two wealthier Members who used a small biplane to land on the 8th and take off up the 9th hole when they came to play golf!

Our recent history has been focused on improving the course and its facilities for Members. An automatic watering system was updated in 1992 and in November 1994 a borehole dug which can be used for the future irrigation of greens and tees in times of drought. Full fairway irrigation has been in place since 2005.

Noteworthy in our Club’s early history is the election as a Privileged Member of the Consul General of Japan in 1923. This began the pleasing and helpful visiting association of members of the Nippon Club over many years.

The existing clubhouse was showing signs of its age, so this was demolished and a new muchimproved building with greatly improved facilities erected to mark our Centenary Year in 1996.

The Course Our beautiful tree-lined golf course offers an appealing test to golfers of all abilities. At 6,338 yards from the white championship tees, it is perhaps not long by today’s standards, but the fact that the course record stands at just five under the par would suggest that it has stood the test of time remarkably well.

The greens are slightly smaller than is the norm, placing a premium on accuracy with the approach shot or, should you miss the putting surface in regulation, a sharp short game comes in very handy. It is how our course designer intended it when he drew up the course more than a hundred years ago.

Technology may have altered golf equipment drastically, but there is little point in being able to boom a drive 350 yards if you cannot hit it straight as well. Maidenhead penalises the errant shot while those able to hit with accuracy are richly rewarded.

We are always looking at ways to further enhance the golfing experience, with vital improvement work being undertaken each winter. A particular focus most recently has been on installing a new irrigation system to the pit area on the 13th,

www.maidenheadgolf.co.uk

improving a well-used area. Continual work has also gone on to rebuild some greenside bunkers and refurbish some of the fairway sand traps.

Take the Course Tour Prepare for your visit to Maidenhead Golf Club by familiarising yourself with each hole over the coming pages and make the most of your round with our hole-by-hole guide. You can prepare yourself for the challenges that await, as well as pick up some invaluable playing tips from our Club Professional, Steve Geary.

Hole 1, 358 yards, par 4

A gentle 358-yard par 4 to ease you in to your round. A drive finding the fairway will leave you with a shot to the green which is slightly elevated to the rear. Distance control with your approach is important if the pin is located behind the right-hand greenside bunker! 12 |

Hole 2, 351 yards, par 4

The preferred angle to approach this green is middle right in the fairway. The green is upward sloping and tiered to the rear. If attacking a pin position at the back, be careful.

Hole 3, 376 yards, par 4

A fairway sloping from right to left requires an accurate tee shot to avoid the strategically positioned bunker on the left. Your approach shot requires accuracy and control as the green is surrounded by Out of Bounds on the right and a bank to the left.

Hole 4, 474 yards, par 4/5

At 474 yards this was, in earlier years, the maximum length for a par 4 (par 5 for ladies). The fairway, as you approach the hole, slopes gently left to right. With your second shot you must avoid the fairway bunker on the left. The two-tiered green can be very tricky, especially if the flag is on the top tier.

Hole 5, 324 yards, par 4

At 324 yards, this could present a reasonable birdie opportunity for all players. Keep your drive left of centre to give you the best opportunity to get into this two-tiered green. For the longer hitter use of the driver could www.maidenheadgolf.co.uk

The long hitter needs to watch out for the bunker on the left.

offer an eagle opportunity but accuracy is premium!

Hole 6, 195 yards, par 3

Our longest par 3 at 195 yards requires a well struck shot to the green which has a gentle undulating surface. Missing the green to the right will regularly end in disaster.

Hole 7, 371 yards, par 4

At stroke index 5 this hole is a good test for all golfers. A well-positioned drive to the fairway that falls from right to left will give you a good shot to the wellprotected green. The long hitter needs to watch out for the bunker on the left. www.maidenheadgolf.co.uk

Hole 8, 429 yards, par 4

Another fairway that slopes slightly right to left. Your drive needs to be down the right-hand side while missing the fairway bunker. A drive down the left, if you escape the large tree, will leave you an interesting shot across a large dip to the green. Your second shot should be just to the left of the mound by the green and your ball will then roll down the slope towards the hole.

Hole 9, 513 yards, par 5

At 513 yards, this is the longest hole on the course. The copse on the right hand side, 70 yards from the green regularly ruins the score on this hole.

Hole 10, 151 yards, par 3

Five bunkers protect this relatively flat green so an accurate tee shot is required.

Hole 11, 465 yards, par 4/5

A demanding hole of 465 yards should leave you very pleased walking off with a par. There is plenty of room to play down the left thus avoiding the fairway bunkers that await your drive. The goodsized green slopes away from you and has subtle undulations so beware!

Take the Course Tour cont. Hole 12, 303 yards, par 4 This hole offers a birdie opportunity but beware the bunkers that protect this long green. Drive to the right at your peril and it’s out of bounds up the left.

Hole 13, 145 yards, par 3

A deceptive 145-yard par 3 which is all carry. This hole is played over a gully to a well-guarded green. Getting par is a good reward for a straight shot from the tee.

Hole 14, 398 yards, par 4

An accurate tee shot of approximately 235 yards is required to negotiate this www.maidenheadgolf.co.uk

right hand dog leg. The approach to a long, narrow green requires good distance control.

Hole 15, 396 yards, par 4 An attractive looking tree lined hole. Negotiate the fairway bunker at 210 yards from the tee and you will leave a mid to short iron shot to the green which is protected by two forward greenside bunkers.

Hole 16, 182 yards, par 3 Our 2nd longest par 3 with a slightly elevated green protected by 2 greenside bunkers.

Hole 17, 483 yards, par 5

This par 5 has 3 fairway bunkers to negotiate, with a narrow entrance to the green if you intend to run the ball in. Avoid the mounds to the right of the green otherwise a shot or two may be required to recover.

Hole 18, 424 yards, par 4

A tough and demanding final hole of your round. Once the tee shot is completed, the approach to the green requires precision to avoid the 2 greenside bunkers. Club selection and distance control are vital to prevent a shot going long and potentially Out of Bounds. | 15

Practice Facilities Few people would suggest that golf is an easy game to master. Seeing even the best golfers in the world struggle for consistency at times is evidence enough that the casual player must work hard to reach new levels. But it is this continual and never-ending quest for improvement that attracts so many people to the sport.

Maidenhead Golf Club can put you in a position to become as good a player as you wish to be. We have an excellent teaching Professional staff who offer easy-to-follow advice that is proven to work and some fine practice facilities to enable the pupil to work on those newly-learnt techniques so they become second nature and assimilated into his or her game. There is a practice ground in the middle of the course which is 155 yards long where shots can be played to a proper green as good as those on the main course.

www.maidenheadgolf.co.uk

There are flags for targeted practice, a newly refurbished greenside bunker and different areas of rough to work on lob shots and other speciality shots. Another practice ground can be found away from the course which at 280 yards long and around 200 yards wide is perfect for working on the long game. A very nice practice putting green in front of the clubhouse and three practice nets complete our game improvement facilities.

Members’ Golf Men

Anyone joining the Men’s section at Maidenhead Golf Club can look forward to a great deal of competitive golf, both against other clubs and alongside fellow Members in club events. Regular rollups are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at a more sociable time of day, starting around 10am. Within the Club, the major competition is the Peace Cup which is in effect the Club Championship and dates back to 1922. Two Honours Board competitions can be traced all the way back to the late 19th Century and there are nearly 20 trophies played for on an annual basis. 24 |

Monthly Medals – Strokeplay in the summer and Stableford in the winter – take place at weekends and throughout the year during the week there is a Stableford and a Strokeplay medal every month on a Friday. One of the challenges that generates much interest is the Border Trophy, a match between Maidenhead Members who represent the country of their birth in an England v Scotland match. In recent years, this has been a 36-a-side match. No-one wants to be on the losing side in this one, but a very convivial evening follows in the clubhouse. A much more refined competition is

the Chrysanthemum Cup, which is an enjoyable annual fixture that has been played against our Japanese friends the Nippon Club since 1967.

Ladies

The Ladies enjoy 22 friendly matches throughout the year. Playing home and away in alternate years, mostly against Clubs from within Berkshire and with some long-standing fixtures among them. These encounters live up to their name of friendlies, with normally a cup of coffee beforehand and refreshments afterwards. The Ladies enter many of the County’s competitions such as the Division www.maidenheadgolf.co.uk

One of the most sought-after trophies is the Challenge Cup

Spring and Autumn meetings, both one-day stableford events, Fourball League, Angela Uzielli Memorial Trophy, Duncan Trophy, a knockout competition played by five golfers per side and the Inter-Club Shield, a oneday Stableford event held in May for teams of three. Nationally recognised competitions such as the Ping 4BBB, LGU Coronation Foursomes and the Daily Mail Foursomes are always keenly supported. There are well in excess of a dozen Club competitions, as well as Monthly medals and Stablefords and knockout www.maidenheadgolf.co.uk

competitions in the summer for singles and pairs. One of the most sought-after trophies is the Challenge Cup, which is played for over 36 holes on a single day in September by the 16 best players from three specific qualifying medal competitions.

Seniors

Although the qualifying age to be a member of the Seniors at Maidenhead Golf Club is regarded as 60, people in their late 50s are not turned away and no criteria is laid down in matches between ourselves and our neighbours as these are always

friendly and good-spirited affairs where good golf and good company is all that matters. The Seniors enjoy fixtures against 12 other local Clubs home and away each season, running from the beginning of April right through to the end of September. The matches are played in the morning, usually on a Wednesday or Friday if at home. Most often these fixtures feature six pairs a side playing Fourball Betterball, though occasionally as many as eight pairs a side can be involved. A convivial meal generally follows. | 25

Members’ Golf A book is left in the clubhouse detailing all the Senior competitions across the County which Members may wish to enter and it is left to individuals to take part if they so desire. Within the Club itself, there is a Seniors Championship which is an 18hole stableford played in September.

www.maidenheadgolf.co.uk

The Club runs other competitions which Seniors take part in such as Monthly medals or Stablefords, while the Seniors enjoy informal fourball roll-ups on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8am.

cont. Enjoyment is always a key element and several more light-hearted competitions are enjoyed such as Texas Scrambles and a Christmas Stableford. Around twice a year some members of the group enjoy a day out at another Club, playing a round of golf and then enjoying a meal together.

Visitors We would be delighted for you to come and experience the thrill offered by playing on our manicured fairways and true-running greens as you walk round our picturesque parkland layout at Maidenhead that has been enjoyed by thousands since it first opened in 1896. Visitors are welcome to play our historic Members’ course at times when it is not being used by our Members. Even better value is offered with the purchase of a Day Ticket allowing unlimited golf subject to course availability and with special twilight rates often available to those able to play at less busy times later in the day.

30 |

It is preferred that Visitors possess a current handicap and can produce a handicap certificate upon registration at the Professional’s Shop. If a handicap certificate cannot be presented, the Club reserve the right to ask any player or players to leave the course if their lack of ability is likely to be to the detriment of others on the course or they do not adhere to the etiquette as detailed in the Rules of Golf or to the club’s rules and dress code. To check on tee-time availability and to book your round, call 01628 624067.

On Course Dress Code

The issue of a dress code is a sensitive subject at all golf clubs. We would like our Members, guests & visitors to enjoy their experience and respectfully request that golfers wear recognised golf attire. A clean and smart appearance is expected on the course at all times. To avoid unnecessary embarrassment, Maidenhead Golf Club request all Members, guests and visitors to consider their attire against the spirit of the dress code. If you have any doubt in respect of an item of clothing or footwear adhering to the dress code, then please refrain from wearing it. www.maidenheadgolf.co.uk

Clubhouse Dress Code

Members, guests and visitors are required to wear smart casual clothing. Smart jeans and trainers are allowed in all areas of the clubhouse. The following are not acceptable: • Flip flops • T-shirts • Caps or golf hats • Wet, muddy or sweaty clothing including golf waterproofs, replica sports kit (e.g. Rugby or football shirts) Soft spiked golf shoes are permitted in the casual ‘Players’ bar area but are not permitted in the lounge area or restaurant. www.maidenheadgolf.co.uk

Exception: • Ladies may use the main entrance to access the locker room. • If wearing shorts (tailored and knee length) - socks are required both on the patio and in the clubhouse. Socks are not required with deck shoes. Combat, cargo or multi pocket trousers/ shorts are not acceptable. Shirts of all kind must be tucked into trousers.

For dress guidelines for other social functions see publicity notices. In exceptional circumstances, certain elements of the dress code may be relaxed but only with the permission of President, Club Chairman, Club Captain or, in their absence, a Club Official.

After 7pm the only section of the clubhouse where shorts are permitted is in the casual ‘Players’ bar area. For Friday Night Suppers and Sunday Carvery Lunches a jacket is preferred but this is not a requirement. | 31
