History Market Harborough Golf Club was founded by a group of local businessmen, namely William Henry Symington and his two brothers Edward and Robert together with William Horn and Mr Paddison, who met in the Three Swans Public house on 16th August 1898. They passed resolutions to form and name the club, to accept loans from gentlemen interested in ‘advancing’ the game and to confirm land at Oxendon owned by a Mr Frank Underwood as the site of the ‘Links’. It was also apparent that a good deal of the preliminary work had been done prior to that meeting as the founding group

became the committee with Mr Paddison becoming honorary secretary and treasurer. Ladies were allowed from the start and subscriptions were fixed at a guinea for the men and half a guinea for the ladies. The original course was designed by Northampton Golf Club Professional David Duncan. The first President of the club was Sir Humphrey de Trafford (1899 – 1906), he was a very keen sportsman and fox hunter which drew him to the area where he met many like-minded men.

6 | Market Harborough Golf Club

The first AGM was held in September 1899, with membership at 84 men and 45 women, and the first Captain was elected, which was Mr Paddison who also remained the honorary secretary and, at that time, the rental for the course was £5 per year! The club’s first Professional/Greenkeeper, from the Isle of Man, was also employed at this time, however, he only stayed for eight months. Most of the course was maintained by grazing at the time, with the greens fenced off and hand cut and rolled.

Inserts in The Golfing Annual the top one from 1898 and the lower one from the 1909/10 edition

In 1905 two rooms of Flint’s cottage, over the road from the course, were used as the clubhouse at a rental of £5 per year, entry to the course was via an iron Kissing Gate. In 1906 the club employed its second Professional/Greenkeeper but in May 1907 he was sacked for apparently spending too much time golfing and too little on the maintenance of the course. He was replaced by a fulltime Greenkeeper at 18 shillings per week. In 1907 the club acquired its first clubhouse, which consisted of a Men’s

room, Ladies’ room, toilet for each, lockers, tool room and a bicycle shed. This clubhouse survived until 1923 when it was replaced by the one below, which was originally a fever hospital and was purchased for £25.00

The club started playing inter club matches in 1903 against clubs like Uppingham GC, Northampton GC, Stamford and Kibworth although the last two only started in 1905. Currently the club is involved in interclub matches at all levels: A, B, C, Seniors, Ladies and Junior Teams taking part. >>

In 1965 several improvements to the clubhouse were made, particularly the locker rooms and heating system, as well as a septic tank. This clubhouse survived until 1986 when it was replaced by the current one which has undergone several changes to provide improved locker rooms, bar area and restaurant.

History CONTINUED In 1911 the committee relaxed its NO GOLF on Sunday and allowed play after 1pm, much against the wishes of the clergy. Strict conditions applied: no caddies, no visitors unless accompanied by a member, no competitions and no greenkeeper in attendance. The no caddy rule instigated the production of tube bags, known as “Sunday Bags”. During the First World War, all those on Active Service were made Honorary Members and any of the local yeomanry were given free access.

In the years between the wars the course was improved as far as the land permitted but in 1934 a turning point was reached when a new course was designed, which involved an additional field which in total would provide five new greens and 10 – 12 new tees. This new course is virtually identical to the existing front nine. During the Second World War part of the course was used to produce crops, but play continued on the restricted course and was interrupted on occasion by the Luftwaffe, who clearly had no respect for golf, as they strafed a four ball down a fairway, however, they were extremely

relieved that the pilot’s accuracy was not as true as their putting! In 1954 a major change occurred when the affiliation was switched from Northamptonshire to Leicestershire and Rutland Golf Union, where it has remained ever since. During the 1960s a huge treeplanting programme was started with the current stand of poplars on several of the holes being evidence of its success. Ever since its formation Market Harborough Golf Club has rented the land it was built on but, in 1970, things changed with the land being purchased from the

Part of the original gate is in the garden to the right of the path of the club entrance.

Paget family and by good negotiation the payment for the land by instalments was agreed. In 1972 further tree planting was carried out with the conifers between the 4th and 5th fairways still in evidence. In 1980 Ian, the grandson of founder member Howard Symington, took on the role as Club Captain and started a decade of course and clubhouse improvements with the objective of making this club the ”best 9-hole course in the county”. In the middle of the decade the thoughts moved to making the course 18 holes, which was a dream of many past Captains and members.

In 1981 the Juniors section was formed, although historical records show a cup was played for by members under 15 years of age in 1934 to 1937 (Bates Cup). In 1982 the seniors section was formed for players of 60 years and over – later changed to 55 and over. In December 1987 a rehearsal for a dramatic breakout from Gartree Prison was carried out on the course, a helicopter landed on the course, two men alighted and talked to the professional and a club member, the latter giving them a lift into town. Just eight days later a hijacked helicopter was used to help two prisoners

escape from HMP Gartree, dropping them off in Rockingham Road where they stole a car and escaped. From 1988 to 1990 a long and hard negotiation took place resulting in the purchase of the land alongside the original nine holes to form the new nine. In 1991 work started on the “new nine”, which was designed by Howard Swan with an emphasis on the lakes and water courses on the land to be used to enhance the golfing experience and to provide a good golfing challenge. >>

History CONTINUED His press release for the course read: “The breath-taking new holes are laid out around the most beautiful series of lakes, throughout the central valley of the course. This will give Market Harborough one of the finest courses in Leicestershire, with some superb holes in a wonderful landscape”.

The course continued to be improved, with upgrades to the bunkers on the original 9 and an extra put in, as per the Howard Swan design.

In May 1993 200 golfers played in the inaugural competition involving the “new nine”, with the best round of the day being a 2 under par 68.

1998 Centenary Year: To celebrate the Centenary, a new crest was designed based on the Coat of Arms of Market Harborough Urban District Council in 1953. Many events were organised and links were formed and

In 1994 the clubhouse was extended with improvements in the locker rooms and the 19th.

continue to this day, with two other clubs that celebrated their centenaries in the same year; namely Maxstoke Park and Church Stretton. Triangular fixtures are held every year. The next milestone in the club’s history occurred in 2012 when it went from being a Members Club to a Plc run by a voluntary board of Directors. The club continues to improve year on year, with course improvements such as new tees, rebuilt greens, new practice facilities and a 5-hole academy course.

Market Harborough Golf Club | 11

Hole-by-Hole Guide Hole 1 Early Climb Par 4 White Tees 372 Yellow Tees 362 Ladies Tees 327 The first hole is an uphill straight hole that plays longer that it measures, but with little trouble around the green. If your drive reaches over the ridge and avoids the trees on the right, then you are in good shape. Be aware that a drive left onto the practice ground is out of bounds. The second shot will always require more club than the yardage suggests. Providing you keep clear of the trees on either side of the approach and, if you don’t reach the green, you will be left with a relatively easy chip. The green has a deceiving slope from front to back and a five is always a satisfying score.

Hole 2 Two Furlongs Par 4 White Tees 430 Yellow Tees 409 Ladies Tees 421 This hole is a difficult and long hole coming so early in the round. It is regarded as the second hardest hole, so don’t expect a par on a regular basis unless you are a low handicapper. With this in mind set your store out to get a bogey and be delighted if you get a par. The tee shot doesn’t have to be long as most players will need to play their second shot short of the cross bunker, which is 50 yards in front of the green. Assuming you are just short of the cross bunker, a reasonable pitch with a short/ medium iron should leave you with no more than a 25ft putt, which should hopefully mean two putts for a bogey.

12 | Market Harborough Golf Club

Hole 3 Temptation Par 4 White Tees 259 Yellow Tees 253 Ladies Tees 227 The third hole is fairly short uphill par four. The longer drivers can reach the green but if in doubt it’s safer to play short of the three fairway bunkers, leaving a carefully played pitch or chip to a left to right sloping green. The slope and undulation of the green means that no putt, however short, is flat. Hole 4 Vista Par 4 White Tees 374 Yellow Tees 369 Ladies Tees 308 The 4th hole is again fairly short but downhill all the way, including the green. The hole is a very slight dogleg to the right, so typically a drive to the left gives a

better approach to the green, as the trees on the right will result in a chip out. The cross bunkers shouldn’t come into play, but certainly the greenside bunkers are there to catch an errant approach shot. There is out of bounds to the left of the fairway and in the stream beyond the green. Hole 5 Over the Hill Par 5 White Tees 533 Yellow Tees 520 Ladies Tees 458 The fifth is a strong par five where a reasonable tee shot aimed at the right side of the fairway will, due to the natural lie of the land, fall to the left. The second (blind) shot also will tend to roll right to left. The third shot would need to carry the cross

bunker approximately 40yards short of the green if you are to reach the green in regulation. If in doubt it’s best to play short of the cross bunker and chip to centre of the green as the two greenside bunkers will catch any wayward approach shot. Hole 6 Farndon Fields Par 3 White Tees 169 Yellow Tees 157 Ladies Tees 134 The 6th hole is a medium length par 3, flat and straight with out of bounds to the left. Greenside bunkers both left and right will catch any wayward shot and the open aspects and wind will influence your club choice.

Hole 7 Two Spinneys Par 5 White Tees 483 Yellow Tees 468 Ladies Tees 431 This hole is a fairly short par 5 with out of bounds all along the left. If your drive finds the fairway, then a well placed second between the gap in the bushes and short of the fairway cross bunker will leave an uphill approach with a short or medium iron to a green guarded by two bunkers. The green slopes from back to front so it can pay to be short of the pin to have an uphill put.# >>

Market Harborough Golf Club | 13

Hole-by-Hole Guide Hole 8 Postage Stamp Par 3 White Tees 112 Yellow Tees 100 Ladies Tees 101 The eighth hole is the shortest hole on the course but, with the out of bounds close to the left and two bunkers guarding the heavily contoured green, it is no easy birdie. Hole 9 Lily Pond Par 4 White Tees 380 Yellow Tees 367 Ladies Tees 353 The ninth is downhill to a large lake short of the green, with out of bounds to the left all the way. Be aware that the trees on the right will catch any left to right drive, normally requiring a chip out and an automatic dropped shot. A good drive will

Hole 10 Hawthorn Gap Par 4 White Tees 364 Yellow Tees 309 Ladies Tees 271 An uphill par 4 which always plays longer than it is, greets you at the tenth. The drive has to be threaded through the wide gap in the fairway bushes, leaving an uphill shot to a two-tier green with greenside bunkers. You will have to club up considerably to reach the green in two.

For 95% of golfers this hole should be played as a short par 5 by keeping the ball in play, no heroics. The church tower in the distance is a good line for the drive. Unless your drive leaves you in range of the green, the second shot should be played short of the fairway bunker, leaving a mid-iron to the green. However you decide to play this hole, remember it penalises any poor shot heavily, so if you take a 5 or 6 do not be concerned as nearly everyone will do the same.

Hole 11 Church View Par 4 White Tees 450 Yellow Tees 411 Ladies Tees 360 The eleventh hole is a test for any golfer.

Hole 12 Hit or Miss Par 3 White Tees 187 Yellow Tees 147 Ladies Tees 153 The twelfth is interesting, mainly because

leave a medium/long iron to a receptive but large green.

14 | Market Harborough Golf Club

of the varying pin positions that the green shape allows. It is particularly challenging off the men’s white tees as the green is quite narrow and well-guarded by bunkers. The green also lies slightly across the line of play and has some deceptive slopes. Hole 13 Town View Par 4 White Tees 398 Yellow Tees 343 Ladies Tees 307 Hole 13 is a dogleg par four that calls for a good tee shot to find the fairway. Dependent on the drive, your ball position will determine how much of the green you can see. There are well positioned fairway bunkers and trees that will come into pay for the wayward drive. An accurate second

shot is required to find the green and there are severe penalties for being wayward with your approach. Hole 14 The Gorge Par 5 White Tees 489 Yellow Tees 459 Ladies Tees 434 Hole 14 is a par five where a reasonable drive is needed to carry over a dip in the fairway. Once over the carry, two good shots should get you near or on the green. The approach to the green has a well-positioned bunker to the right and the green has two tiers, which is a test of putting.

Hole 15 Badgers Corner Par 3 White Tees 123 Yellow Tees 115 Ladies Tees 107 Although the three short holes on the back nine are all of similar length, all have a different character. The elevated green provides a good view of the fifteenth green but the pin position, coupled with the wind direction, will have a big effect on club choice. If you play your tee shot for the middle of the green you should not be too far away from the pin. However, once you are on the putting surface you still have to consider the slope and line carefully to achieve a par. >>

Hole-by-Hole Guide CONTINUED Hole 16 Devil’s Dyke Par 4 White Tees 430 Yellow Tees 413 Ladies Tees 349 The sixteenth is a really tough test made harder by the recent addition of a drainage ditch positioned laterally across the fairway, which comes into play on your second shot. The tee shot must favour the right-hand side of the fairway as going left could be a lost ball. The second shot most probably will need to be played short of the hidden ditch, leaving just a short pitch onto the receptive green. If you feel confident to go for the green with your second, remember to favour right of the green due to the lay of the land. Just keep

away from the rough and water on the left and bogey or even a par is possible on this tricky hole. Hole 17 Twin Lakes Par 3 White Tees 150 Yellow Tees 135 Ladies Tees 113 With water in front and to the left of the green and bunkers guarding the right, this par 3 demands an accurate tee shot. Again, with the elevated tee position the wind conditions will make club selection difficult to judge, but very satisfying when you make the green.

Hole 18 Homeward Bound Par 4 White Tees 397 Yellow Tees 364 Ladies Tees 322 Finally, the eighteenth, a good finish – a dogleg over water. With a straight tee shot over the right-hand corner of the water, the second shot has to skirt a small pond to the left and two fairway bunkers to the right. The tiered green is best approached from the right-hand side, thus avoiding a well-positioned bunker on the left-hand side. A par on his hole is a good score.

Course Development Since Market Harborough Golf Club became an 18-hole golf course in 1992, the course managers have striven to improve the course year on year. The aim of the team is to provide a course that the designer, Howard Swan, had in his mind all those years ago and I quote: “The breath-taking new holes are laid out around the most beautiful series of lakes, throughout the central valley of the course. This will give Market Harborough one of the finest courses in Leicestershire, with some superb holes in a wonderful landscape.

With the help of volunteer teams putting in flower boarders and restructuring the lakes that play such an important role in the course, the greens staff are able to concentrate on improving the tees, bunkers, drainage and, in some cases, new hazards such as Devil’s Dike; which was added to the 16th in 2013. In 2016 the team re-laid the greens on the 2nd and 5th to improve drainage and have levelled and re-turfed several of the tees.

We are currently also improving our practice area and also the new 5-hole Academy Course. We pride ourselves in our presentation and are always trying to improve our course. The greens team are confident anyone coming to play at Market Harborough Golf Club will enjoy a challenging course in a beautiful landscape.

A junior lesson takes place

Junior Golf Programme Market Harborough Golf Club is dedicated to growing the game of golf and truly believes this starts with introducing as many children as possible into the game. Once we have given them the skills to play, we provide them with access to our academy course and then onto our shortened 9-hole course so they are able to continue their development.

The kids give Foot-Golf a go.

This pathway will allow them to progress into playing golf at club level and, who knows, even county level and onto national level. Ultimately, it is their choice how great a golfer they wish to become. All we aim to do is to provide the support and direction they need.

Our Junior Programme follows the Golf Foundation’s Junior Golf Passport, covering the basics of the game with an emphasis on fun and safety, plus the groups are within two age bands so they can learn with youngsters of their own age: 5 to 9 years and 10 to 16 years.

MHGC Golf Academy The practice facilities at MHGC are second to none. New for the 2017 season is a newly prepared grass range tee, which will complement the pitching green, putting green and 5 Hole short course.

Our new indoor Golf Academy at MHGC allows for year round practice. The academy features the latest state-of-theart video analysis, which is complimented with an incredible array of teaching aids designed to make the learning process both informative and fun.

We use the latest V1 Video capture software from Interactive frontiers. This software allows us to video our pupil’s swings and then replay it to them in slow motion. The ability to save each pupil’s swings then allows us to compare and chart the improvement. The software gives us the ability to send pupil’s swings to them via all the latest social media sites or to their smart phone. Our philosophy ensures all pupils are supplied with a complete package of their lessons, which includes printed material of their swings and the professional’s tips.

How to Find Us Throughout its 100 years-plus history, Market Harborough Golf Club has been recognised as a gem in the countryside of Leicestershire, situated alongside the A508 Northampton to Market Harborough road, our location offers easy access from the motorway network via the A14.

the club remains a highly popular venue for visiting clubs and societies.

The combination of easy access and a lovely parkland course with stunning views over the rolling hills of Northamptonshire and Leicestershire makes Market Harborough Golf Club appeal to individual and corporate members alike. The quality of our course is just another reason that

It is also close to the famous Foxton Locks on the Grand Union Canal as well as within easy reach of Rutland Water and well-known market towns such as Melton Mowbray, Oakham, Market Bosworth (site of the Battle of Bosworth) and Stamford.

The club is 1.5 miles outside the historic market town of Market Harborough with its Saxon church, unique grammar school and traditional high street with a wide selection of shops.

We are situated on the A508 Northampton Road about one mile south of Market Harborough. If you are travelling from the south, we are about a mile after leaving Great Oxendon village on the A508.
