welcome Nestled in the Hertfordshire countryside is the warm and welcoming Mid Herts Golf Club As one of the oldest golf clubs in the country and with a golf course designed by five times Open Champion James Braid, Mid Herts offers a true test and experience for any golfer.

The 18-hole course offers a classic heathland terrain with rippled fairways, fescue grasses and quick greens that are protected with traditional grassy hollows.

Combine this with a relaxed and friendly clubhouse and range of excellent off course facilities, Mid Herts provides golfers with a memorable experience for members, their families and all visitors.

5

Our History Mid Herts Golf Club was first established in 1892 when permission to play golf on Gustard Wood Common had been granted by the Lords of the Manor, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. Less than seven months later the 9-hole course was open for play after the professional from the West Herts Club, Charles Thom, had laid out the links. The greens were made by cutting the natural fescue grasses lower and Horace Rawlins from the Isle of Wight was employed as Groundsman / Professional. The total costs were recorded at less than £17. The Viscount Hampden was the first of

6

many peers to be elected as President of the Club and a clubhouse was constructed in 1897 on the current site at a cost of £107. The course was enlarged to 18 holes in 1923 under the guidance of James Braid which extended beyond The Slype and Kimpton Road. In 1935 the Club purchased the Manorial Rights and became the owners of Gustard Wood Common, although the public retain the rights of ‘fresh air and exercise’ over the land.

By the early 1960’s golf became more difficult on the north of the Common due to increasing road traffic, with picnickers and clients of the bordering public houses encroaching on to the playing areas. The Club then purchased 21 acres of farmland further south to accommodate three new holes and a practice area. The tees and greens on the Common were redesigned and came into play in 1968 and apart from some later modifications, the

125 Year Anniversary In 2017 the club was 125 years old and celebrations were held throughout the year to commemorate this event.

layout then is basically the course we play today. The original wooden clubhouse was replaced by a brick building during the same period, with further extensions in the mid-1970’s.

Since our 100th anniversary in 1992 there has been considerable investment in all aspects of our course, with the clubhouse extensively redeveloped and refurbished back in 2000. The refurbished clubhouse was opened by Sir Terry Wogan, who was an honorary member of the club.

Recent Times In recent times the clubhouse bar and dining area has been completely refurbished together with the ladies’ locker room. Our electricity comes from our own solar panels and investigations are in hand for our course water to be supplied by a borehole. On the course, many of the “humps and hollows” that are typical of the James Braid design have been cleared and restored, with further works planned for the next 18 months. Many of the copses have also been cleared allowing the natural grasses

and heather to re-grow. Our conservation works have been recently recognised, firstly by the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust (H&MWT) and secondly by the BBC’s Countryfile team who filmed our course and the measures undertaken by our ground staff - the programme was broadcast on Sunday 10th January 2016. Here at Mid Herts, we have also adopted a 5-year conservation plan drawn up by the H&MWT to further improve our grasslands and encourage back the natural wildlife to our rare acid heathland course.

The Course Founded in 1892, Mid Herts Golf Club is one of the country’s original golf courses steeped in beauty, style and challenge. Maintaining its original heathland feel combined with a contemporary warm welcome and modern facilities, makes it a favoured and well-loved course for local golfers and visitors alike. Mid Herts Golf Club was fortunate to benefit from the input of renowned golfer and course designer, James Braid, when

8

the course layout was extended to 18 holes in 1923. The result is an established, varied course offering a dynamic and changing round from tee-off till you complete the 18th hole. The course never disappoints with undulations and various natural hazards including encroaching trees and thick rough, combined with designed hazards such as strategically placed greenside and

fairway bunkers. From both the white and yellow tees, Mid Herts Golf Club is Par 69 for men and 72 for ladies. However, don’t think you’re without a challenge when you begin a round here, the heathland course is rife with technical hazards making it a particularly challenging game. All your skills will be put to the test as it plays around 6,000 yards off the white tees with five exciting and varied Par 3’s.

to be c o n t i n u ed

Putting surfaces at Mid Herts Golf Club are well-established and maintained ensuring they are true and quick with intriguing breaks. Three of the holes incorporate two-tier greens designed to challenge even the best. Elsewhere, long hitting will give you the edge over your competition.

Mid Herts is fortunate to be able to place considerable ongoing major investment into the beautiful heathland course ensuring a course both for today and future generations. The heathland has naturally excellent drainage meaning you can enjoy a game whatever the time of year. We are open all year round.

This is a course designed with the aspiring and accomplished golfer in mind, one who likes to be presented with challenges and decisions in order to achieve a low score. Your skill on both long and short recovery shots will be tested and honed.

At Mid Herts Golf Club, you’re very welcome to turn up and play, however when we are running our special events, we do recommend booking a tee time to avoid disappointment. We have up to four different starting points allowing us to maximise

golfer’s choice of times without overcrowding the course. Once you’re done, why not head over to the welcoming Mid Herts Golf clubhouse to rejuvenate yourself with a drink and some delicious food.

Mid Herts Golf Course is a beautiful heathland course and a haven for wildlife. The course is laid out across one of Hertfordshire’s few remaining lowland heathlands and acid grasslands. It is species rich with tracts of heather, grasses and wildflowers as well as a home to a

range of woodland fauna. Over 90 bird boxes have been installed in recent years by the club and red kites, great spotted woodpeckers, tawny owls and nuthatch are regularly seen, as well as bats. Lowland heathland or ecologically similar acid grassland habitats were once widespread across much of southern or mid Hertfordshire. The loss of heathland in Hertfordshire has been dramatic since 1940, with an estimated 97% loss in area, so much so, that today no more than about 20 hectares of open dry and wet heath survives.

Hole Three

For your opening tee shot of the day, you will find plenty of space to play with. Ideally keep your ball up the left half of the fairway as this gives you the best line for your approach shot to this green, which is beautifully framed by the trees. You will be met by alongish green which slopes from left to right, so take care on your first putt of the day.

One of golf’s great pleasures is to play from an elevated tee to a green below. The second hole at Mid Herts offers such a prospect, made all the more interesting by the tree lined tee. Not a long par three, but you need to be pinpoint with your shot as bunkers, mounds and slopes have to be negotiated if you miss the green here.

This tee shot will get your attention! Thread your drive through the funnel of trees and then face a challenging approach to a compact green guarded by a hollow on the left and bunker to the right. Par whether gross or net is very welcome here.

Hole Four

Hole Five

Hole Six

Plenty of space to play with off the tee here, although too far left will find you blocked out. The approach shot plays a little shorter than the yardage suggests, to this tricky left to right sloping green. A good tip here if playing match play, don’t give any putts on this green!

Mid Herts’ signature hole which requires a solid shot to the two-tiered green. The tee is very sheltered here, so take a few moments to look up into the trees and check which way the wind is blowing as it’s easy to get caught out.

This is a good example of a well-designed short par four. Ideally the tee shot will favour the right-hand side, as the fairway runs from right to left. The approach to this green whilst not a long one is thought provoking. There is a tree just left of the green and a pot bunker to the right waiting to snaffle up any shot not perfectly struck to this compact target. Keep your mind and swing positive here!

Hole Nine

This is a demanding par four starting with a tee shot that needs threading between the bunkers on the right and the trees on the left. For your approach to the green be positive, as anything short will be gathered up by the bunker to the right. The shot most handicappers receive here is generally much appreciated!

Depending on the breeze and whether we have a front or back hole location, there can be a two-club difference in your choice. The good news is that the prevailing wind tends to be helping here. See if you can emulate the amazing feat of one of our Lady members who hadhole in ones, two games running!

This left to right dogleg par five offers the longer hitters a chance to get home in two shots. Off the tee decide which side of the fairway tree you want to land. Left of the tree is safer but longer, so guess what is right for you! The two-tier green offers an interesting challenge and two putting from the lower tier is not easy. Still a good chance to pick up a stroke before the back nine.

A super right to left shaped hole, with a pond on the left corner and trees up the right to give your drive focus! The approach shot to this green needs to be guided between the bunkers guarding the target. If your approach shot is from over 175 yards out, consider laying up and giving yourself a nice simple pitch, as missing this green presents all sorts of chipping challenges. A par here is a great way to begin your back nine.

We often use the 11th as a longest drive hole with the straight fairway inviting you to open your shoulders. Nearing the green on this long par four, be mindful of the bunker 40 yards short and the one to the left of the green. It has a nice flat putting surface, just asking to be single putted.

A classic par three to a challenging target. A good tip here is to club up as all the problems are short of the green. Make a three here and give yourself a pat on the back.

Hole Thirteen

Hole Fourteen

Hole Fifteen

Although a generous fairway, there are a couple of strategic bunkers either side to keep you concentrating. The green is surrounded by some tricky mounds and a devilish pot bunker, a real James Braid feature which even a 100 plus years after they were designed will test anyone’s short game.

The 14th is a perfect risk and reward hole. At under 300 yards, it is tempting to clatter a driver as close to the green as you can, or you have the option to lay up and pitch on. I’ll leave that decision to you, just be aware that the fairway becomes narrower the further up you go ….

This hole justifies its position as stroke one on the card. Ideally keep the drive up the left-hand side, to avoid being blocked out with your second shot. A large receptive putting surface will greet you, perfect for getting up and down on as,more often than not, that is what is required here for gross or net pars.

Hole Sixteen

Hole Seventeen

Hole Eighteen

At first glance a fairly innocuous looking par three, however a cunningly placed tree protects the left side of the green. To the right the ground will gather your ball towards the bunker, so like the 12th be bold with your club selection. Statistics tell us this is our most birdied par three, so don’t be shy on your putt!

A fun dog leg hole with accuracy required off the tee between the mounds on the left and the bunker on the right, to give yourself the best line in. I would suggest a fairway wood or hybrid here, although bigger hitters might fancy a big draw with the driver to get close to this punch bowl green. When pitching in here decide whether to run the ball in or take the riskier aerial route.

What a great Par 5 to finish! The drive is through a chute of trees to a fairway that becomes wider the further you go. The second shot needs to favour the right-hand side to give you the best approach to the home green, which has a steep right to left slope. It may be your last hole of the day, but this green is tricky, so final tip is no gimmies here!

Academy Membership In 2019, in an effort to encourage more women to play golf and join our golf club, we launched a Ladies’ Golf Academy. Starting with a course of six lessons in a small group ladies can give golf a try and then at the end of the six week period, they could thenjoin a one or two-year Academy programme designed to get them to reach a standard that would enable them to enjoy full membership of the club.

30

The Academy programme has now been running since February 2019 and has proven more successful than we could have imagined!

The Academy has become a very important part of the club, so much so, that we have also now launched a Men’s Academy.

• We have equipment available to borrow for group lessons and fun competitions, so that ladies can try golf while paying only a small upfront cost. • We hold regular Academy events, including fun competitions and practise sessions where ladies can socialise and get to know one another. • We focus on short sessions, playing between 3 and 6 holes. We often play team formats, which enable ladies of all standards to contribute while building confidence and camaraderie. • We assign an existing lady member as a ‘buddy’. The buddies are a point of contact, giving advice and encouragement. An Academy member starts by playing a few holes with their buddy to help them to get to know the course and demystifythe basics of golf rules and etiquette. • We try to emphasise the social aspects of playing golf and joining a club, by promoting a friendly atmosphere, where ladies are welcome and can play, relax, have a drink and enjoy themselves!

So, if you’ve ever thought about taking up golf, what are you waiting for? Why not give golf a try, get some exercise and make new friends! We look forward to welcoming you very soon!

Visitors Mid Herts Golf Club extends a warm and friendly welcome to all visiting golfers – whether individuals, groups or societies. All visitors can look forward to an excellent round of golf followed by some exceptional Clubhouse facilities.

Our aim is to give you an outstanding golfing experience from the moment you arrive. That way we know you’ll want to come back.

What’s special about Mid Herts?

Is there a strict etiquette for visitors to observe?

We have several starting points on the course and no requirement to book tee times which means the Pro Shop has great flexibility in getting members and visitors onto the course during each day. We always suggest calling ahead in case there is a large competition or Society heading off – but our aim is to maximise our members, guests and visitors’ opportunities to play golf.

We try to strike a relaxed approach at Mid Herts and rely on our members and visitors to enjoy the course and the clubhouse by simply observing a common courtesy to each other. On the course, we encourage everyone – members and visitors alike – to allow players through if a group is a bit slow and to pause

For safety, golfers know to call a warning if their ball strays near someone and on our course, which has some footpaths, we wave ramblers through if passing nearby. For comfort and safety – if not always high fashion – golfers wear standard golf clothing and footwear.

low-key – but if you’re unsure – just ask – there is always a friendly member of staff to chat to.

In the clubhouse we want you to come in, have a drink and a bite to eat and mull over the putt that got away. We have a relaxed dress code with an accent on casual but smart – avoiding wet or muddy clothing in the lounges. It’s very

Who to call?

We like to think that these are the small courtesies that make a good round into an enjoyable one for all.

If you are a Society, then call our Events Manager on 01582 832242 We have a small team dedicated to helping you have a really successful day whatever your requirements.

If you are an individual or a small group, then call our Professional Shop on 01582 839294. They can help you find the best time to play and offer advice on tee times, green fees, bar and food.
