Welcome
R
oyal Mid-Surrey occupies an historic area of Royal Parkland in Richmond upon Thames. Founded more than 100 years ago, it shares a bend in the river with the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew.
Where Henry V built a monastery, James IV was laid to rest and George III grazed his sheep, golfers now enjoy the challenge set by two fine courses given their character by the great professional J.H. Taylor. For many decades Taylor - the five-times winner of the Open - was our club professional, a distinction he shared with another future Major winner, Henry Cotton.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
While proud of its past, the club is continually striving to ensure it remains in tune with the present and prepared for the future. For instance, the Outer Course (known as the J.H. Taylor) has seen major investment on a raft of improvements recently which will cement its championship status for many years to come. The clubhouse experience - with its modern facilities and friendly, helpful staff, is equally enjoyable. The catering is very highly regarded with food available throughout the day. The restaurant seats 120, is a wonderful place to dine and offers a fantastic vista over both golf courses, The River Thames and beyond.
Royal Mid-Surrey offers an unequalled combination of golf and hospitality for society or company golf days. The club is only nine miles from the centre of London and is conveniently located for both car and public transport. It is easily accessible from the M25 and is within walking distance of Richmond rail and underground stations. If you like history and tradition, golf courses of exceptional standard and outstanding clubhouse facilities to match, you will find a royal welcome awaits you at Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club.

A Brief History
F
ew clubs have as much right to the Royal prefix as Mid-Surrey. Its historic connections with Royalty go back to Plantagenet times, Henry V built a monastery where the 14th and 15th Outer holes are now played and George III grazed his sheep over the whole of the Old Deer Park.
The steps he used to return to his home in what is now Kew Gardens still exist on the right of the Outer 7th, and the Observatory - on the right of the 14th - was built for him. Queen Elizabeth the First died in a palace which once stood on these historic links.
6 / Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club
Modern Royalty bestowed royal status on the club in 1926 when the then Prince of Wales was captain and it was a cousin of Queen Victoria, the second Duke of Cambridge, who was the club’s first president. Mid-Surrey - so named because it was on the edge of both Middlesex and Surrey - was founded on St Crispin’s Day, October 24, in 1892. At that time the whole stretch of land was so flat that a writer on The Field described the course as having ‘an insufficiency of undulations’ while the Times correspondent Bernard Darwin was rather more outspoken, using the phrase ‘flat as a pancake’.
It was the club’s first famous professional, the five-time Open champion J.H. Taylor, who began making the Outer Course more interesting. He and the greenkeeper Peter Lees, who had been lured from the Royal Burgess club in Edinburgh, led about 100 men recruited from the ranks of unemployed to create the ‘humps and hollows’ which gave the course its distinctive character.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
Mountains of earth were dug out and built up. The professional claimed that many visitors came vast distances to study this aspect of golf course architecture and one distinguished visitor remarked that he could imagine himself on a Scottish links looking towards a backdrop of dunes. Lees left in 1915 for America where he laid out and maintained five courses in New York. Taylor stayed much longer - until 1946 when he handed over to another world-renowned professional. Henry Cotton had won the Championship at Royal St George’s in 1934 when his total of 283 included one round of 65 made famous by Dunlop launching a ball with that figure as a brand name the Dunlop 65. Cotton won again at Carnoustie in 1937 and at Muirfield in 1948.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
The next winner of the Open - at Royal Portrush in 1951 with Royal Mid-Surrey connections was Max Faulkner. He had been an assistant to Cotton and occupied the professional’s job between Cotton’s departure and Jimmy Adams returning from Australia in 1952. Adams was not an Open winner but was second twice - in 1936 and 1938 - and he had an impressive Ryder Cup record. Like many sportsmen, his career was blighted by World War II. He left in 1969 when David Talbot joined from Hollinwell, the Nottingham club. Talbot brought prestige to the club in a different way from his predecessors. He won the PGA championship in 1968 and became its captain in 1979. At the end of his year he became president of the World PGA
Federation. He remained as professional until 1999 when his son Philip took over. In its early days, the course was the scene of several famous tournaments beginning with the old News of the World matchplay championship in 1904 when a crowd of 2,000 watched the final. The English Championship was held there in 1946, the PGA championship in 1961 and 1968 and the Boys’ Championship in 1962 and again in the centenary year of 1992.

A Brief History (continued) In the 1980s it staged the Equity and Law for all the years of that tournament’s existence. The longest lived tournaments, however, have been amateur events and the oldest is the Mothers and Daughters which began in 1932 as an event for Veteran Ladies and their offspring. In 1962 the age limit was removed and the tournament has continued to flourish ever since.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
A year after the Mothers and Daughters began, the Antlers arrived. This was a 36-hole foursomes medal event which has been won by many famous names: Crawley, Micklem, Beharrel, Bonallack, Carr (J.B. and R), Critchley, Hughesdon, Davies (J and P) and not least Michael Lunt who became the club secretary in 1987.
The Royal connection was evident once again in November 2003 when the Duke of York opened the new and much grander clubhouse.
All these people, events and memorabilia were illustrated and commemorated in a wonderful and much admired display of portraits, pictures and trophies in the old clubhouse which was destroyed along with all the contents in a fire in March 2001.

The Courses
T
he Club has two fine 18-hole courses designed by the great J.H. Taylor, five times Open Champion and Club Professional for 47 years. The J.H. Taylor (Outer) Course is the scene for the famous Antlers Open Competition for Amateur Foursomes Medal play; the Pam Barton (Inner) Course is home to the wellknown Mothers and Daughters Open Competition.
only surrenders birdies to very good golf shots. Head Professional Matthew Paget says: “It’s an incredibly tough par-69 golf course.”
The courses have been host to several large amateur competitions and European Tour events previously.
The club is confident that the result will offer an even better golfing experience. There are certainly some different challenges, with water now in play on two holes before the turn.
Both layouts are exceptional and offer something different. The Outer Course is longer and although it is slightly wider off the tee than its sibling it’s a real challenge that generally
10 / Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club
The Outer Course has seen ambitious course renovations and improvements including the construction of 18 new USGA specifications greens, work that was completed in 2014 at a cost of £1.7million.
The hope and expectation is that the modifications will be well received and that the J.H. Taylor will once again be
a popular choice to host championship events, as well as providing a thrilling test for members. All the greens are built to USGA-specification and are freedraining all year round. “The newly-refurbished greens on the J.H. Taylor Course are simply amazing,” Matthew says. “They are 12 months-a-year greens, they are very undulating and have a constant year-round quick pace to them.” Every bunker on the J.H. Taylor Course has been reconstructed in this ambitious project and several new features added to the golf course which has made a great layout even better.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
Measuring a somewhat more forgiving 5,500 yards or so, the Pam Barton Course therefore lends itself more readily to ladies’ golf. Here the premium is not on distance, but on accuracy. With tree-lined fairways anything wayward off the tee will be severely punished and it is equally crucial to be precise with an approach into relatively small, well-protected greens. While the courses are generally fairly flat and perfect for easy walking, they are far from featureless. The humps and hollows – for which J.H. Taylor is famous – play like the dunes of a links course and force the golfer to think carefully before choosing their club.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
Another Taylor feature - bunkers - may be eye-catching but live up to their name of sand “trap”, so ensure you take a lesson from the professionals if you are lacking in confidence as it is a skill that is sure to be called upon at some stage.
The amateur record is held by Royal Mid-Surrey Artisan Member Pat Cunningham who, in the monthly medal of July 1982, shot a gross score of 62.
It is an unusual coincidence that both the professional and amateur course record holders on the Outer Course at Royal Mid-Surrey are left-handed players. The professional record is held jointly by the left-handed New Zealander Bob Charles and Bernard Gallagher who both shot a gross score of 64 on the same day. This was the occasion of the Eccentric Club Pro-Am on 11th July 1979.

TheTaylor J.H. Courses (Outer) Course - Hole by Hole Hole 1, 225/183 yards, par 3
Hole 2, 531 yards, par 5 (pictured)
Hole 3, 370 yards, par 4
A fierce test for the first shot of the day. A long straight shot is needed to avoid the bunkers at both sides. If the pin is placed at the top right of the green a superbly faded stroke or a very lucky slice - will end in the right place.
An equally straight long shot is required to avoid the trouble in the form of J.H. Taylor’s ‘humps and hollows’ which run along both sides of the fairway. A good drive will leave you with a second shot which needs to carry a cross bunker placed at 352 yards and once described by Henry Cotton as the ‘finest example of cross bunkering’. A newly-formed swale on the left and well-placed bunker at the right front guard the green.
A good dog-leg which proves that difficulty is not in length alone. Beware the new bunker on the right off the tee and the prominent mounds. Too long a drive on the left can force the second to be kept low beneath the branches; too long a drive on the right will find another series of shallow humps, followed by rough and trees. Following the reconstruction work in 2014, the undulating green is a real test.
12 / Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club
www.rmsgc.co.uk
Hole 4, 373 yards, par 4
Hole 5, 147 yards, par 3
Hole 6, 406/389 yards, par 4 (pictured)
Another dog-leg but not so sharp and the green is visible. The fairway narrows at the length of a good drive with a bunker guarding the right opposite a small but dense pine copse. Bunkers at both sides of the green; that on the right runs round a good deal of the front.
A ‘wedding cake’ of a hole fronted completely by a bunker which also eats into the left side. Another bunker is on the right. A perfectly judged shot is needed to carry to the green but a shot that runs too far in any direction will land in trouble: a small gully in front of a pine copse at the back; a well-grassed bank lines the gully at the left and the banking for the sixth tee is on the right.
Another hole that demands a well-placed tee shot to offer an approach to a green that has a deep hollow faced by a bunker some thirty yards short of it. More humps and hollows line the beginning of the left fairway and huge trees line the rest of the left and the right fairway. Kew Gardens runs alongside this hole and the next and in the spring displays a wealth of bluebells.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club / 13
TheTaylor J.H. Courses (Outer) Course - Hole by Hole (continued) Hole 7, 344 yards, par 4
Hole 9, 429 yards, par 4
A hole that demands thought more than strength but a long drawn drive will set up a short pitch to an upward sloping green. Too long a drive on the wrong line will end in Kew Gardens or down the slope and at the foot of the railings which line them. A pulled or hooked shot to the other side will need the player to negotiate many maturing trees.
Stroke 1 on the index and well chosen. What appears to be a wide fairway is deceptively narrow at the point where it veers slightly towards the green. A tree on a mound - known as “Coggins’ Nob” to the Members - can affect a pushed drive. Be sure of your strike off the tee to carry the newlyformed water hazard. The huge putting surface is protected by mounds both sides and hitting the green in regulation is no guarantee of par.
Hole 8, 188 yards, par 3 Arguably now the signature hole on the course since the reconstruction work in 2014 with newly-formed wetland protecting the front of the green. There are no bunkers, but beware the J.H. Taylor mounding. A very accurate long iron is required to find the raised green.
14 / Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club
Hole 10, 442 yards, par 4 A classically simple hole that looks deceptively straightforward but it needs to be played down the left to avoid a bunker at 230 yards which covers half the fairway.
Five more traps guard the long green which slopes severely at the front requiring a perfectly-judged lofted approach or a skilfully executed run-up. When the pin is on the immediate top of the slope, club selection is all important.
Hole 11, 153 yards, par 3 (pictured) A hole which punishes any mistake. A huge bunker at the front of the green traps the under-clubbed shot; short of this there is deep grass and shrubs. On the right are a few familiar humps and deep rough; on the left you will be in a small copse or under tall trees. Through the green is a grassy hollow to the left, an impenetrable clump of gorse and on the right a hollow - probably the only area off the green from which you could still make par.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
Hole 12, 458 yards, par 4 The start of a run of typical Mid-Surrey tests. Like the tenth, its perils are obvious and it appears to be a straightforward if long par four. But a sliced shot will place you under the oaks shielding the greenkeeper’s spinney, a wider slice will put you in it and out of bounds. On the left across the road is a line of birches flanking the practice area. The green, like that on the tenth, needs careful club selection and is guarded by wide bunkers.
Hole 13, 318 yards, par 4 This hole offers the chance of a rare birdie on the back nine. But a careless drive can end in a bunker on the right or in the pine woods on the left. Too strong a drive can end in one of
www.rmsgc.co.uk
the two bunkers guarding the narrow entrance to the green and any second stroke, other than a perfectly judged one, will almost certainly finish in sand at the side of the narrow green.
Hole 14, 523/498 yards, par 5 A test of accuracy for the long hitter, a test of patience for the less strong. Bunkers wait on inaccurate drives at 275 yards and 295 yards on the left and at 254 yards on the right. Pass these and the second wave come into play on both sides of the fairway and from 90 yards in. A wickedly undulating green with a pronounced slope from back to front.
Hole 15, 458 yards, par 4 When first laid out this hole was a par five and you can feel happy to walk off with no more. Like the tenth, it is classically simple. A line of poplars wait for the loose shot on the left and two horse chestnuts wait further down on the right. A bunker at 250 yards is beyond the poplars. The fairway narrows as it nears the green and the entrance is made tighter by a shallow bunker guarding the right side.

J.H. Taylor (Outer) Course - Hole by Hole (continued) Hole 16, 209 yards, par 3
Hole 17, 423 yards, par 4
Hole 18, 405 yards, par 4
Humps on the right follow a deep depression which often fills with water in the winter months. An interestingly contoured hump on the left side of the green can throw your ball into the bunker but occasionally a well-struck, slightly offline stroke can run over it to the green. Bunkers protect both sides of the green.
One of the best and most challenging holes on the course features a dog-leg which is not immediately apparent. The drive needs to be angled perfectly to avoid the bunker on the left and the birch trees on the right. Bunkers which cross most of the fairway 95 yards short of the green can trap the really long hitters and bunkers guard the green on both sides.
A truly great finishing hole. Standing on this tee gives you one of the best views on this historic course. The fairway sweeps up the only real gradient on the course to cross bunkers just over the road and with the Kew Gardens pagoda in the distance. Bunkers are placed at 244 yards on the right and 264 yards on the left. There is thirty yards of dead ground beyond the cross bunkers and the attractive gardens and the beautiful Turkey oak attract the eye to the right of the green.

The Courses Pam Barton (Inner) Course - Hole by Hole Hole 1, 303 yards, par 4 (pictured)
Hole 2, 305 yards, par 4
Hole 4, 398 yards, par 4
A straightforward hole with no hidden trouble. Pine copses line both sides after a distance of about 150 yards from the tee where a large group of plane trees waits for the quick, nervous first shot of the day. Bunkers protect both sides of the green.
No place this for a player who pushes or pulls his tee shot. This is one hole that emphasises how ingenious J.H. Taylor was in cramming 36 holes in such a restricted area. A push brings the trees on the eight into play, whilst a pull brings the hazzards of the fourth into play. An overdrawn long drive will find the woods on the left and a series of bunkers are placed along the fairway and around the small green.
A wide open vista but trouble in the form of well-wooded areas lining both fairways and a central bunker at 278 yards. No trouble for a straight approach but bunkers trap on both sides of the upward-sloping green.
Hole 3, 154 yards, par 3 A lofted shot is needed here to carry the bunker at the centre just short of the green. Two small bunkers catch the shots not hit straight. If you hit the green you face a putt on a more undulating green than most on this course.
18 / Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club
Hole 5, 363 yards, par 4 A dog-leg which opens out as you get nearer the green. The only danger is the bunker short left of the green and the one lining the right. Too strong an approach over the green and you are in a deep copse.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
Hole 6, 119 yards, par 3
Hole 8, 343 yards, par 4
Hole 10, 166 yards, par 3 (pictured)
The same length as the famous Postage Stamp at Troon but very different in topography. So simple if you are straight, so irritating if you veer slightly left or right where you can then blast from bunker to bunker across the very narrow green.
A comparatively easy hole which leaves a well-struck drive with an approach to a raised sloping green protected by a chestnut wood on the left and a bunker on the right. Club selection is all important.
This hole had one of the smallest greens of the 36 until it was re-modelled in 1999. Now it has generous proportions but with subtle contours that do not make it an easy par. Bunkers that hug the sides add to its difficulty.
Hole 7, 459 yards, par 4
Hole 9, 317 yards, par 4
Not the longest hole on this course but uphill and narrow for the drive. The dense copse which separates the fifth and sixth holes lines the left of this hole and a group of four silver birches are on the right of the fairway. At good driving length are a couple of bunkers and then another bunker on the left. Another bunker protects the right front of the two-tier green.
A dog-leg which invites a draw round the lone chestnut tree on the left as it turns towards the green. Too strong a draw however will land among a few pines lining the left fairway. Too strong a drive on the other side will end in a wood. A couple of bunkers guard the green on both sides.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club / 19
The Courses Pam Barton (Inner) Course - Hole by Hole (continued) Hole 11, 265 yards, par 4 This hole varies in difficulty depending on where the tee markers are situated. On the left and the huge wood in front of the tee looms large and menacingly magnetic. A ball drawn too much around the magnificent oaks can leave you having to draw again around the smaller fir trees that line the left of the fairway. The safest route is out to the right if you cannot be sure of a straight drive. The green is well protected with front bunkers and too strong a shot will run through the green into another wood.
Hole 12, 353 yards, par 4 Five magnificent Leylandii trees line the left of this hole and the best drive will flirt closely with them. The fairway
20 / Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club
is generous, however, and a shot hit out to the right will give you an easy straight route to the green. A deep bunker protects the left of the green and cross bunkers some forty yards short will catch the poorly-struck second.
Hole 13, 271 yards, par 4 (pictured) A left-to-right dog-leg that will tempt the long hitter to go for the green. A few aces have been scored here - but an easy straight shot will leave you nicely placed in a reasonably wide fairway and an easy route to the green despite the presence of several bunkers. The green is wide rather than deep so make a careful club selection.
Hole 14, 407 yards, par 4 This hole is just a few yards longer than the fourth but it not only looks longer, it plays that way too. A line of London plane trees stretches along the left of the fairway at driving distance and on the opposite side several mature birches make it imperative that you hit the centre of the fairway. You still have a challenging second to make the green which is not generous in size and narrow with a bunker on the left.
Hole 15, 147 yards, par 3 A short hole certainly but usually into the wind and well trapped forward, left and right. It favours the golfer that can hit a high dropping shot to a generous and flat green.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
Hole 16, 410 yards, par 4 (pictured)
Hole 17, 290 yards, par 4
Hole 18, 444 yards, par 4
The walk back to the tee allows you time and opportunity to see what you have to carry from the tee: a mass of wild water-loving plants that can grow to shoulder height. A good drive is needed here to set up a second to a green that reminds the romantic of the famous Road Hole of St Andrews. Like that hole it is best approached from the right, giving you a chance to hit over the right-hand bunker with a run up to the flag. Approaching from the left leaves you with a shot over the greenside bunker to a very narrow green with a road immediately behind.
Not a long hole but one where you need to place your ball accurately to avoid the echelon of bunkers that run diagonally across the fairway from left to right nearing the green. A frustrating green that slopes a little away from you and with bunkers at front left and on the right. Some sixty or seventy yards short of the green is a crater caused by a bomb dropped from a Zeppelin in World War I and marked by a small plaque.
Considered by some members to be the best hole of the 36 and with one of the best greens. An oak wood about 200 yards up on the right will catch the pushed drive and a bunker opposite will trap the pull or hook. A longer slightly pushed shot will reach another bunker at 274 yards. The shot to the green has to avoid well-placed bunkers guarding the entrance and once on the huge surface many contours need some study.

eaford College is one of the few colleges in the country that boasts its own golf course within the grounds. The course was established in 2005 when the college appointed Neil Macfarlane, a full-time resident golf professional. The 9-hole course itself is a real challenge with 7 par 4s, a par 5 and a par 3 making up a par 36 course over 2666 yards in the beautiful surrounds of the South Downs. Also on-site is a driving range with a short play practice area, as well as a synthetic allweather putting green. Gatwick Airport
Seaford College takes part in friendly matches against other schools and colleges and also competes in the ISGA annual knockout and HMC Foursomes competitions. It is also one of the select schools who compete in the annual West Sussex Schools Invitational at West Sussex Golf Club, alongside the elite of top school and college golfers. Golf is offered as an option to pupils as part of the Sports Curriculum with the facilities also available to parents and ‘Friends of Seaford’. Neil Macfarlane, Seaford’s Golf Coach: “I really enjoy coaching the enthusiastic young players here at Seaford. I seem to have a flair to be able to communicate with people and get the best out of their talents.” Seaford College is a small, friendly co-educational College, situated in an unrivalled position near Petworth, West Sussex. “My aim is very simple, I want to enable all pupils to achieve their personal best inside and outside the classroom. Seaford provides an incredibly supportive and inspirational environment where pupils feel confident that they can achieve. I am concerned above all with the achievement of each child’s academic potential. In order to do this, the College has introduced the concept of ‘Challenge Grades’. Every child in Years 7 and 8 and in the Senior School has been set a Challenge Grade in every subject. The grade is, essentially, a measure of potential. It is what we think a child can achieve if they work hard. Challenge Grades are ambitious but realistic and have proved to be a great success. We produce visual reports that parents, students and teachers can instantly access www.rmsgc.co.uk online to track progress. With this individual focus and average class sizes of 15 I believe that every child can reach their academic - John Green, Headmaster personal best.”

In short, whatever your age, if you love your golf and are looking to make new friends on and off the course, then you have come to the right place. Traditional seven-day golf memberships provide unrivalled access to the two magnificent 18-hole championship golf courses and a host of competitive playing opportunities. Members can also chart their continual improvement by gaining an official CONGU handicap, recognised at golf clubs worldwide. Casual golf does not necessitate the need for a tee time whilst competition golf does. Members playing casual/friendly golf simply arrive at the Club and tee off from one of the four recognised starting holes. Competitive golf requires a tee time, and one can be booked in person, on-line or in the Pro Shop.

Members’ Golf
R
oyal Mid-Surrey represents an excellent choice of club for those who enjoy competitive golf. The club can offer inter-club matches for men, women, seniors and juniors, together with a host of honours board competitions and more relaxed social golfing events.
32 / Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club
Royal Mid-Surrey is a proud supporter of the knockout events organised by the Surrey Golf Union such as the Surrey Scratch Inter Club Knockout and the Surrey Fives. We enter two teams in the West section of the Surrey Fives, which begins in April and runs through to September. It has an interesting format: A team must consist of two players with handicaps of between 5 and 12 inclusive and three players with handicaps of between 13 and 18 inclusive. The event is played over 18 holes of matchplay with the winning team progressing to the next round, culminating in the winners of the West section playing the winners of the East section in the overall final.
The ladies are supporters of many of the premier county events run by the Surrey Ladies County Golf Association. These include the Hicks Trophy and the Derry Cup, a scratch knockout competition between representative teams of three players with home and away matches in each round. The Druce Trophy, a one-day foursomes medal handicap eclectic, has a particular significance for our members as Mary Druce, after whom the trophy was named, was a popular member of Royal Mid-Surrey who worked tirelessly on behalf of Ladies’ golf in the county.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
Then there is the Pearson Trophy, a team event played in a group format over the winter followed by a knockout phase with the eventual winners going on to represent Surrey against the champions from Hertfordshire, Kent and Middlesex. Our ladies also enter national competitions such as the Daily Mail Foursomes (as do our men) and some members play in the many Surrey competitions. The Seniors are well catered for too, our over-60s entering a team each year in the Bowman League.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
As well as the regular weekly competitions within the club there are a host of honours board competitions to be fought for, each carrying an accompanying trophy. The Gold Medal (off scratch) for the male golfers and Championship Challenge Cup for the ladies are greatly prized, as are the annual Spring and Autumn meetings for both sections. It is of great sadness to the club that many of its historic trophies were lost in the devastating fire of 2001. Some of the priceless original silverware may have vanished forever, but the history and tradition of these events lives on and members can look to put add their own name to honours boards containing some famous names of the past.

Golfers Elbow? Poor flexibility? Shoulder soreness? Post total knee or hip replacement? Keen to still be playing golf? Book a Physiotherapy Appointment today Local garden and landscape designers, Sally Court and Helen Billetop,
were interviewed recently after winning the prestigious International Award at the Society of Garden Designers 2013 Awards earlier this year.
The International award was for a garden they have been working on over a period of seven years to create an English style of garden for a country Dacha on the outskirts of Moscow. The judges recognised the unique complexities of the scheme commenting: “This impressive garden illustrates the essence of an English garden, with well-defined spaces and beautiful details. The high standard of execution, despite the logistical challenges, sets it apart from the rest and illustrates the best of traditional garden design in an international context.” Recognition by the SGD is just the latest of a string of awards, 6 in total including the “Best Landscape Award” at the New Homes Gardens Awards in the UK for 2013. Sally and Helen have also won many RHS Medals at both Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows. Their style is not always traditional and has been cutting edge when asked by clients to create contemporary garden and urban spaces. “Working in different genres keeps us on our toes, and stimulates our creativity to find new materials and design appropriate planting styles to compliment the clients aspirations and garden maintenance needs.” Sally and Helen’s expertise could benefit your own garden too—they suggest that commissioning a professional landscape designer is an investment that can help clients avoid costly mistakes that turn the dream into a nightmare…..

Members’ Golf (continued) Many new trophies have been acquired to replace those that were lost. Royal Sydney Golf Club, for instance, sent the club a beautiful cut glass bowl as a replacement for the Men’s spring/autumn medal trophy lost in the fire. So whether your favourite format is singles or pairs, strokeplay or matchplay, a one-day event to find the winner or a knockout competition running throughout the season you will find something to appeal at Royal Mid-Surrey. You do not need necessarily to be a scratch golfer, with a good selection of competitions run against handicap, meaning that everyone has a chance to get their hands on some silverware.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
It’s not all serious, however, far from it. There is plenty of social golf on offer, too, both within the club and in a series of challenge matches enjoyed throughout the season. Friendly matches against such clubs or organisations as Roehampton, Portmarnock, the Richmond, St George’s Hill, Rye, Met Police, Surrey Country Golf Union have long been established on the Club calendar.

Juniors
R
oyal Mid-Surrey is a great supporter of junior golf. It is not just a question of tolerating our younger players, we value what they contribute to the club and appreciate that if nurtured and given support, they are the potential core membership of the future.
So many have gone on to contribute at all levels of club life as adults, and we’ve also had more than our share of talented young players. The principal aim of the Junior Section is to provide an environment in which children (both boys and girls) can develop their game of golf and associated values. The Club also seeks to provide a high standard of competitive golf, thereby enabling junior members to have the opportunity of achieving their full golfing potential. It is a delight to see our young golfers prosper and achieve great things. However, we are very much a family club and it
38 / Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club
is equally rewarding to see fathers and sons or mothers and daughters enjoy a social game together. For their part, juniors can learn so much from golf. As well as being a hugely enjoyable (and at times, hugely frustrating!) sport, it teaches so many life skills such as common courtesy, good manners and playing by rules. The maximum junior membership is 120 boys and girls in total, between the ages of 9 and 18. The Club strives to ensure that an appropriate balance across the ages and the sexes is maintained. The juniors have their own dedicated room in the clubhouse.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
The Junior Section does not teach golf to beginners. However, it does provide a structured programme of coaching and development for the junior members to a level which meets the appetite of the individual. Our Junior Academy features three levels, with the youngsters progressing to the next level as their playing skills increase and their confidence grows. Surrounded by like-minded young people it is the perfect environment to hone the skills needed for a lifetime of golfing enjoyment and ensures everyone from the novice and inexperienced player to the elite young golfer is catered for.
www.rmsgc.co.uk
Each school holiday there is a full programme of matches, competitions, medals and fun events which are all well supported and periodically there are sponsored trips to golfing destinations, such as Scotland, and social occasions such as the concert/quiz night.
For more information about junior golf and how to become a member, please check out the extensive details available on the Club website, www.rmsgc.co.uk
From about the age of 13 the established juniors (with a CONGU handicap) are also encouraged to play in the adult competitions, which take place mostly at weekends. Royal Mid-Surrey subscribes to the philosophy that if you’re good enough you’re old enough, and we will never stand in the way of our young golfers achieving their dreams.

Open Competitions
R
oyal Mid-Surrey hosts two famous open competitions - The Antlers, a foursomes medal event played over the Outer Course, and the Mothers and Daughters played on the Inner Course.
48 / Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club
The Mothers and Daughters is a unique event in the amateur ladies golfing calendar. Mothers and daughters come to Royal Mid-Surrey from all over Britain to compete in this prestigious 27-hole foursomes scratch event.
The Antlers is an equally famous and prestigious competition that was first competed for in 1933. It was - and still is - a 36hole foursomes medal event which has been won by many famous names.
When it was first played at Ranelagh in 1932 it was only open to members of the Veterans’ Ladies Golf Association. However, in 1962 the organisers decided the event should go open and Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club has hosted it annually on a Saturday in April ever since. In fact the competition has never looked back and is always over-subscribed. There is no actual handicap limit but places are given to the 64 lowest combined handicaps on the last day of entry.
The Club now also stages the Youth Antlers. This competition is an open amateur scratch medal foursomes competition for boys and girls aged between 10 and 20. Held in August, it is played over 36 holes. Entries is limited to 50 pairs whose combined handicaps do not exceed 18. The club also hosts a Scratch Matchplay Championship and a separate Gold Medal. Social Activities
R
oyal Mid-Surrey is renowned for many things, but two things that set it apart from the average golf club are the quality of its championship layout golf courses and the warmth of the welcome enjoyed by members and guests in the clubhouse.
The club organises a number of social events throughout the year where members can get together and enjoy each other’s company. The social calendar is both varied and fascinating, featuring the likes of a Summer Ball to an Opera/Valentines Night and from jazz evenings to a celebration of Burn’s Night. Jazz is very popular amongst members and on the last Sunday

of every month there is a sit-down lunch with musical accompaniment. The Club also has a very active Bridge section. There has even been a talk on James IV, whose resting place for a time was believed to be in Sheen Priory, the ruins of which are still said to lie under the 14th fairway of our J.H. Taylor Course. Both building and poor James disappeared during the Reformation.
A fine example of this can be seen on Thursday nights when up to 100 members play nine holes of golf in foursomes in the late afternoon and then return to the clubhouse to enjoy dinner together.
In truth, members like nothing more than playing golf, so it is no surprise that their favourite game features highly on their list of preferred ways to unwind.
