The Club Captain As Club Captain, I am very proud of my role. I represent members’ ideas and suggestions, help introduce our newest club members, and support the management, greens staff, bar and catering teams, and the Board.
MHGC is exceptional: it has a hard-earned and well-deserved reputation for being accessible, friendly and easy for both established and new members to enjoy. There is a high regard and respect for the club’s history, its long-serving members and its golfing legends. The simple principles that bring together today’s membership are ageless: camaraderie, team spirit, a welcoming attitude, professional standards and a shared love of golf.
In 2018 we celebrate our 125th anniversary and we are already planning ahead for the challenges and opportunities this represents. Phil Matthews Club Captain

The Ladies’ Captain I am the Lady Captain of 2017. In terms of the golf club, I am really delighted with the way this club, with a long history, has decided to become modern and open to the change that is required, to be able to serve the needs of its members, many of whom lead busy, urban lives.
The change in the attitude towards the Ladies and the Juniors reflect this. Especially the change in the Junior department this year has been remarkable, in terms of its organisation and in terms of numbers. It is happy, it is buzzing. My dream for the future is that our beautiful and ever-improving course will keep attracting new members, who, hopefully, will be seamlessly integrated to the main body of our members, with a warm welcome, good customer care and
a structure that guarantees this, thus making the club ready for the next 125 years of delightful golf near central London. Liisa McDougall Lady Captain

The Chairman I feel very privileged to Chair this fantastic Golf Club There are three main functions as Chairman. 1 To oversee the running of the club through our Board of highly committed directors and the various committees that they in turn lead in combination with our dedicated professional staff. 2 To listen to members thoughts and suggestions and be a sounding board
3 To create an holistic experience for all members of MHGC and to ensure visitors enjoy our course and hospitality. I am very proud of the course, the members and the feedback we get from visitors but my proudest moment is seeing our new Junior section grow with nearly 60 youngsters all learning the game. As we have secured the long-term future of the club through our new 99 year lease, and we have a thriving and increasingly young membership, we need to plan against the backdrop of how the game will evolve.
We have a managed investment programme in place for the course, the clubhouse and the environs. We need to keep investing for the long term and I see the opportunity to build an indoor teaching, practice and fun centre as a goal I would like to see achieved in the next five years. David Edwards, Chairman

The President As the Club President, my main role is to ensure efficient and effective governance of the Club, so that members can derive the best possible benefit and enjoyment from their membership. This involves ensuring that structures, policies and procedures are ‘fit for purpose’ and up to date.
I am honoured to have worked with successive members of the Board and Captains who have supported progressive agendas and taken dynamic decisions to modernise the culture of the Club. It has been a pleasure to be involved with a Club that believes in equality, and in welcoming members of all abilities and backgrounds.
My proudest golfing moment is undoubtedly when I holed out from 50yds on the 20th hole to clinch a memorable win for the scratch team in the Inter-Club Championship. My future ambitions are to play better golf, improve my guitar playing and exhibit my paintings. Irene Riley President

The General Manager I was asked by the Board of Directors at Muswell Hill Golf Club to take on the role of General Manager in May 2015 and I accepted without hesitation. It’s a Club with great ambition, backed by a plan in order to achieve its goals and, more importantly, it has the support from all its members. Quite simply put my role is to ensure that our hard-working team at the Club is pulling in the same direction and is enjoying their work.

The future is looking bright as the Club continues to invest both on and off the golf course but its main strength lies with its people. Friendliness, camaraderie, banter, inclusivity and approachability are words, to name a few, that I associate with Muswell Hill Golf Club. We are all fond of our Club and we can assure you of a warm welcome whether it be on the golf course, in the clubhouse or at a private function.
Hope to see you soon. Seb Frankiss General Manager
The Professional I’m the senior professional at Muswell Hill and have been, boy and man, for the past 30 years. My job is to help improve the standard of play of all our members, whether they are high, medium or low handicappers.
I’ve seen our practice facilities grow to include the latest driving nets, a putting green that is truly representative of the greens on the course, a pitching area, a green-side bunker, and a club fitting service.
My wish is that all our members continue to enjoy the game they love. And I, together with my team of professionals, will help them get the most out of this wonderful golf course which is so close to the centre of London. David Wilton Senior Professional

The Course Manager I am the Course Manager, charged with maintaining and presenting the golf course to agreed and specified levels, and managing the day-to-day agronomic demands for the golf course.

MUSWELL HILL GOLF CLUB
It is a real privilege for me to be the Course Manager at Muswell Hill Golf Club. In terms of what we have achieved in the last couple of years, most importantly greens drainage installed in 12 greens, fairway drainage and new bunker work all show a commitment from the club to invest and improve facilities.
Looking to the future, we aim to improve year on year the playing surfaces, and continue with the investment and development of the course at Muswell Hill Golf Club. Kevin O’Neill Course Manager
Bar Manager Together with a great team I run the bar and restaurant to make sure all our members are well looked after, both before and after their round.
We have a very varied menu, a wide selection of drinks, and a great relaxing area both inside and out in which to enjoy them. Depending on the time of year I am here from dawn to dusk and beyond, with extended hours if there’s sport on the television. And I don’t mind who you support, I’ll still happily serve you!
I’m also responsible for making sure the new halfway house is well stocked, which includes hot and cold snacks, and drinks throughout the year. This is always welcome as a brief stop between the 9th and 10th holes. Magda Nawrocka Bar Manager

The Junior Organiser I’m Martin Hegarty and I’m the Junior Organiser at Muswell Hill.
There are a lot of really great things about being the Organiser, but one that stands out most is being part of a team of dedicated people, including our PGA professionals and club members who volunteer to help young people discover golf and help them develop. There’s so much value for young people in the game of golf. More than any other sport, it builds character, teaches respect for yourself and others, and allows players of all ages and abilities to play competitively against each other. It’s a great game for families – I still play golf regularly with my father who is in his eighties and there’s no other sport where it would be possible to do that.
Muswell Hill Golf Club is very supportive of the Juniors and the Section has grown very quickly. We have three categories of Junior players – Advanced, Intermediate and Beginners which allows us to group juniors more closely by age and playing ability, and accelerate their development. I’m looking forward to seeing our Juniors reach their golfing potential and enjoying the game for the rest of their lives. Martin Hegarty Junior Organiser

The Competitions Committee I joined Muswell Hill Golf Club as a junior in 1968 and am currently Chair of the Competitions Committee which organises and runs all competitions in the club. We are the Club Handicapping Authority and are constantly reviewing and updating competition bye laws to try to cover as many situations as possible in an equitable way.
I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to be part of committees and Boards that have enabled our club to race towards its 125 year anniversary in 2018.

Our club should be rightly proud when firsttime visitors are full of praise for not just our facility, but our warmth of welcome. This is often taken for granted but we should all be aware that these things are hard-earned and easily lost.

Members The Greens Golf Committee CONTINUED I joined Muswell Hill in 2010 and joined the Greens committee two years later taking on the role of chair in 2014. Our committee brings together players of different ages and handicaps across the Men’s and Ladies’ sections. Our aim is simple – to provide our members and guests with the best possible course we can, in a safe and sustainable way that will leave this wonderful course in better shape for future generations to come.
Everything we do is focused on 4 key principles; • Quality of course with an emphasis on greens • Speed of play without reducing penalties for poor shots • Safe environment for golfers and residents
I am immensely proud of everything the Course Manager and his team are accomplishing. The future will be challenging with more demands on our time but we are committed to providing an excellent golfing experience for existing and new members. Martin McLoughlin Greens Chairman

The Social Committee I Chair the Social Committee, which is responsible for creating and implementing social events for the club throughout the year. These include, amongst others, themed gourmet evenings hosted by our in house chef, live music events, comedy nights and the ever-popular biannual quiz. The Committee comprises a general cross section of members to help ensure all interests are catered for and we are constantly considering new ideas and suggestions. I am extremely proud of the events the Committee puts on where the Club is full of members, their friends and family, all having a great time in the informal setting of our clubhouse. Apart from our usual social events, what I am most looking forward to in the next 12 months is the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Club and the events we will be organising to mark this significant milestone in the Club’s history. Facelift 125 The Facelift 125 Committee was set up three years ago to identify and fund projects that would enhance the golf club and its environs in time for our 125th anniversary in 2018.
These projects, which include the Halfway House, practice nets, paths and winter tees, have been funded partly by outside sponsorship but mainly by generous donations from members of our club.
With such a supportive and committed membership, we can only see that the club will go from strength to strength in the future. Jim Milligan and John Brazier Facelift 125 Committee

“ We had a cramped space with a steeply sloping ceiling that we wanted converted into a bathroom. Being upstairs, it was even more important this was done well. Tom gave great advice and was not only able to make a functional bathroom, but a tremendous wet room. The plaster in the room was very bad and uneven, and the floor was in a pretty bad condition too. TCG dealt with all this very well and the final result is tremendous. The room is spacious and light. All done to schedule and with great after sales care. Everyone who sees it says ‘wow’ and anyone who knew how the room used to be can’t believe we made such a spacious room. That includes other tradesmen who we had considered for the job before, thankfully, going with Tom at TCG”

The Vice Captain Our club is terrific in so many ways. We enjoy a tremendous course - a real test for golfers of any standard. And due to our dedicated greens staff, it is maintained in great condition.
Our clubhouse provides a welcoming and convivial gathering place. And our members, in all their diversity, are great company to spend time with to mull over the highs and lows of our game, and life in general. The club has been a great part of my life for almost 40 years. In this special anniversary year, why don’t you come along and see if you might enjoy it too!

Hole 1
Hole 4
The holes, by the members who play them 1 The first tee is always special. And there’s great satisfaction when your drive makes the fairway. Don’t be long on your second shot, if you go through the green you’re amongst bushes with a tricky shot to get back onto the green. Bruce Wilson (22 handicap)
3 A great golf hole. It comes early in the round and needs two good shots, just to get near the green. Play it well, walk off with a 4 or 5 and you think ‘now I can have a good round’. Standing on the tee I’d take a 5 any day. Aiden Duignan (5 handicap)
2 The second shot is the important one. Take at least one club less as you don’t want to miss the green left, right or long. Try and keep your ball below the pin as this should leave you an easier putt on this tricky green. Ines Hellmayr (15 handicap)
4 Most iniquitous hole on the golf course with a green that is deceptive from all directions. Never give a putt in match play. Dave Pordage (12 handicap)
32
MUSWELL HILL GOLF CLUB
5 Either fly the ball all the way there or sneak it down from the right-hand side as the natural contours will gather the ball towards the green. Mark Ridge (14 handicap)
6 This par 5, which used to be stroke index 1, is potentially an eagle or a double or triple bogey. The drive is the make-or-break shot of the round. Favour the right-hand side and put the ditch out of your mind. I think this is the most important hole on the course. Tim Jones (4 handicap) 7 Stroke index 1 which requires a decent drive uphill on the right side of the fairway. A raised green beckons so make sure you don’t leave your second, or third shot on the green’s downslope. Mike Hollis (10 handicap)
Hole 7
8 Aim to clear the bunker which is about 140 yards off the tee, then your ball should run nicely up the green. Take the same club you took on the 5th. Jem Butcher (10 handicap) For me, this plays as one of the toughest holes on the course. The narrow green makes it very difficult to get up and down if you miss it on either side so forces you to play a proper golf shot. A par here sets you up perfectly as you come to a stretch of holes with plenty of birdie chances. Peter Milligan (2 handicap)
Hole 10
9 Usually a strong wind blows from right to left by the green so if you’re sending one in from 100 yards always aim to the right of the flag, wherever it is. James Crowley (15 handicap)
out to the right, hooking back to within inches of the hole for a tap-in 3 (eagle). That incredible shot was an indication to me that Jacklin would go on to be a great player. Phil Richardson (5 handicap)
In 1966 Muswell Hill Golf Club hosted former Club Captain Jack Fitzpatrick’s pro-am in which most of the British Ryder Cup team played.
10 A great hole to start the back 9 after visiting the halfway house. Choose either 5 iron and wedge into the green playing safe, or go for it with a driver or 3 wood depending on the wind. Then back yourself to get up and down for a birdie. Paul Mutton (5 handicap)
I followed Tony Jacklin (a young assistant pro from Potters Bar) and Dave Thomas (runnerup in The Open). On the 9th which is a par 5, Jacklin had driven level with the two oaks and from there he hit a 2 iron way
MUSWELL HILL GOLF CLUB
33
Hole 12
Hole 15
The holes, by the members who play them 11 This hole really suits a left hander best. I’m right handed so I aim for the furthest poplar on the left-hand side. The safer shot is down to the ditch before aiming a seven iron up to the green which has bunkers either side. You don’t want to be too long because this green slopes from back to front and can take any heavy putt back off the green again. Garrett Curran (19 handicap) 12 This is supposed to be the easiest hole on the course – it’s not. Make sure you take an extra club to get over the ditch and land on the green. Mandy Miller (8 handicap)
34
MUSWELL HILL GOLF CLUB
13 Looks like a tight drive off the tee but there is plenty of room on the right, ignore the railway tracks on the left, put them out of your mind. With 12 and 14 this the Amen Corner of Muswell Hill. Adam Farebrother (13 handicap) 14 Try a soft draw over the right-hand bunker onto the green and then you are possibly in 3 putt territory. One of the trickiest greens on the course, which is saying something. But always a pleasure. Makes you think. Charlie Nicholson (11 handicap).
ContinUED
15 A stroke index 2 that should really be stroke index 1. Walking off with a bogey feels like you’ve parred it. This hole has everything, trees, bushes, out of bounds, ditches, more trees, and faithful guarding bunkers. The only thing you won’t see are birdies, unless it’s your day. Mark Butterfield (9 handicap) 16 Widest fairway on the course but important that you hit it. The second shot is to an elevated green. Not a long hole but one that requires your attention, a birdie chance if you play it well, but easy to make bogey. Bill Carey (7 handicap)
Hole 17
17 Teeing off in front of the clubhouse can be a bit scary, unless you get one off down the middle. Then take one club less to get to the front of the green and watch the ball roll left to right. Robert Newell (12 handicap)
Hole 18
18 What a final hole! Out of bounds to the left, trees to the right up until the ditch 70 yards short of the green. Aim your drive slightly left to get a good line into the sloping green where a tricky pin position on the front calls for you to pitch it short. Then look forward to a pint at the 19th. Laurence Blumberg (16 handicap)

Pathway into Golf The Pathway into Golf offers a route for beginners to progress at their own pace towards full membership, designed to make your transition into golf as smooth, flexible and enjoyable as possible. The Pathway is separated into three stages as follows: 1. The initial stage is a twelve-month Academy membership which includes six group tuition sessions and three personalised individual lessons. You will also have 12 free rounds on the Academy course, a unique passport to record your progress, and access to all the practice facilities. The best way to improve is to practise and Muswell Hill has
a new short-game area where pitching and bunker play can be perfected. There is also a 9-hole putting green representative of the greens on the course, plus three nets where you can swing away and warm up before going out. Our professional team are always on hand to give help and advice to those who request it. The David Wilton Golf Academy consists of a team of three PGA qualified professionals who are here to help you play better and enjoy your golf. 2. After successful completion of stage 1, golfers will normally progress onto Lifestyle membership with playing credits for the main course and the flexibility to pay as you play.
Alternatively a 5 day or 5 day plus category of membership may also be an option if you play very regularly. However, if you do not feel ready to convert to Lifestyle membership after 12 months there is the option to continue Academy membership for one further year only, where a revised package of similar benefits will apply, with more focus on course play. 3. The final stage is full playing membership, allowing unlimited access to the course, entry into competitions and the possibility of playing club matches. Once you become a full member you can enjoy reciprocal arrangements at many local courses, and at courses nationwide and worldwide.

Club HistOry Muswell Hill Golf Club was formed on December 1, 1893, following a meeting held at the Green Man Hotel in Muswell Hill by a group of enthusiastic Scotsmen keen on playing the game in England’s capital city. About 100 acres was leased from the Alexandra Palace company, land that had originally been set aside for residential development. An 18-hole course was laid out by Peter Fearnie, who was paid the princely sum of £1 5s for his labour! The club’s first president was Sir Ralph Littler, a well-known local judge and barrister. Sir

Ralph was a formidable man who did not suffer fools gladly. He was once mentioned in Parliament after sentencing a labourer at the Middlesex Sessions to three years’ penal servitude and two years’ police supervision for stealing apples to the value of 1s! The club’s first Professional was a Mr. J.Tickle and the first captain Mr George Carrie. Our first clubhouse was a rather more modest affair than the fine surroundings in which we find ourselves today – it comprised two rooms in the neighbouring Tottenham Wood Farmhouse. It is not known definitely who came up with the original course design, but we do know
that the renowned golf course architect, James Braid, was asked for his thoughts on improving the golfing experience in the early 20th century. Braid, a five-time winner of the Open Championship, readily accepted the commission and major alterations were made, particularly with the addition of a great many bunkers. More than a century or so later we are still grateful to the influence of the man who has the King’s Course and Queen’s Course at Gleneagles and the 1926 remodelling of The Open Championship venue Carnoustie Golf Links on his resume. Braid played several exhibition matches at Muswell Hill with Harry Vardon, a six-time winner of the Open and fellow member,
along with J.H. Taylor, of the trio of preeminent golfers of the time known as the Great Triumverate.
Rhodes Avenue, on part of the club’s original grounds, with other neighbouring land being given as recompense.
Muswell Hill Golf Club has a rich history. Bobby Locke and Ted Ray were among other notable professionals to regularly play challenge matches over the course and entertainer Frank Sinatra often played here while staying at the Savoy.
Indeed, the portico that adorned the entrance to the farmhouse that originally served as our first clubhouse still sits in a corner of the primary school grounds. A Listed structure, it is the only piece of that building that still remains. The club moved to a brand new clubhouse on club land in 1932, but our history was not forgotten as this portico forms the Muswell Hill Golf Club logo.
Situated so near the City of London, it will come as no surprise to learn that covetous glances have been directed towards the prime piece of real estate on which the club sits. A land exchange took place which saw the building of a school, situated in
The club has survived one or two crises over the years. In the very early days a section of the membership broke away from the club to
form another club, partly because Muswell Hill had been given notice to quit (a threat, thankfully, that never materialised) and partly because the church, which owned part of the land at the time, forbade golf on Sundays. More recently, the greenkeepers’ premises and equipment were all lost in an arson attack in June 2007. Undeterred, members formed working parties to help with course maintenance until the equipment could be replaced. Muswell Hill rose like a phoenix from the ashes and, once more restored to our prime and well into our second century of existence, we look forward to continuing to preserve the golfing heritage of our forefathers for many more years to come.
